Sharon was amazing! So kind and accommodating, a wealth of information. She saved me from spending thousands at Subaru from a misdiagnosis! Her and the mechanics did only what was necessary for the car, and got me in and out efficiently.

The mechanic named Doug got my truck in wonderful shape air conditioning fixed in one day I highly commend this auto service to anyone that lives in Asheville and surrounding areas thank you Doug

It felt very relieved to find a place like Pates automotive. I’ve always been nervous about trying a new places. I’m one of those guys that don’t like change but so glad I did. The owner seems like a very honest person along with his technician. I went in there expecting to hear I needed all this stuff done to my suburban and it turned out to not be that big of a deal. I just got this feeling that this is a good honest business and I know I found my new mechanic shop. I took my wife’s care the next day for an inspection.

I had an appointment at 8:00 AM. At any other shop I’ve ever been to, that means at the very least being addressed at 8:00 AM. They weren’t open or ready at 8, and I walked into the building at 8, stood in the middle of the lobby for 10 minutes while three different older gentleman were setting up in the shop, but apparently no one saw the man standing in the middle of the lobby. After 10 minutes I didn’t fee my business mattered very much, and to top it all off one gentleman walked into the office as I was leaving to aggressively deny that he had seen me. Confused why I would’ve been offered an appointment at a time they weren’t ready to operate.

Brought in my car. Told them to do what ever needed to be done to get it in tip top shape. Didnt give them a budget or anything. They repaired the brakes and the air conditioning.Passed its inspection. Charged us $1000. Within a day the transmission light came back on and it start making bad fan noises. So we took it back in and asked them to check everything again. This time they told us the car is burning oil and would probably not last very long. Did nothing to offer any help after I just have them $1000 the week before. Talked down to my partner (who is known in this town for being overly respectful and treating her people well) saying overly condescending remarks such as im not at your house to check on things for you every day. Offered no solutions, told us we would probably need a new engine but good luck finding one. Today after just a week and half after passing inspection and being tip top the car died and left us stranded in Brevard. We had to get a tow and a ride.I feel like the service at this shop has dropped drastically in the last few years. Do not waste your time or money.

I have used them and referred people to be their customers. Never had disappointed in the work that was done for the service that I got.

The local discount auto parts store looked at me and said... yup... Go see my friend at Pate’s and I am so grateful for that local recommendation. I had been driving around with extreme anxiety about the yellow check engine light on and instead of attaching meaning to it for yet another day I shared my experience of the Van and my “engine light traumas” from the past and Doug helped ease me and give me hope it wasn’t that bad... that hope was enough to help me return when my taxes came back and get my Van fixed up and now less than $200.00 later I am driving around our beautiful mountain town with a whole lot less “baggage in my mind” about the leak in the hose lines! Thanks Doug and Pate’s for aligning my Van and my perspective of auto mechanic interactions!!! Love ya!!!

Based largely on reviews, I called the shop to schedule an appointment for fixing my A/C. They took me right in and fixed the issue within minutes at a very reasonable price. Good enough experience that I brought another vehicle in the next day for the same.The owners are friendly and gracious and the customer care level I received was exceptional. Nice areas inside and outside to wait, though I did very little of that.The entrance to the shop is a little difficult to spot, especially heading north (I passed by the first time and had to turn around) and the parking area is a bit tight for maneuvering about but everything else met or exceeded expectations. I will be back.

If youre looking for superior customer service and great car repair this is your place. The people at Pates are amazing, caring, and helpful. Every time I have visited there Ive been greeted with a smiling face and been treated with respect and kindness. They really go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to customer service. In addition, they get the job done. I would recommend Pates to anyone!

First I took my car to this place for the first time ever and I asked them because I am a single mother working on a budget I asked them to look at my car and call me before making any repairs and give me a price so I made sure I had the money they did not do that I asked them three separate times to do that for me they did not call until after the repairs were done completely and then they charged me twice as much as it should be Ive called three other Auto places after the fact and all three had given me a price that is at least $100 cheaper than what they charged me I got two spark plugs replaced and two coil packs and I was charged $417 thats outrageous the spark plugs themselves at the most cost 8 bucks and the coil packets cost about 60 to $70 at a parts store I was charged 40 bucks for the 2 spark plugs and $189 for two coil packs and then I was charged for two hours worth of work which we all know it dont take 2 hours to change spark plugs. I also asked for my car to be inspection ready and when I pick it up they tell me go drive it around for a day and bring it back and well see if it passes inspection they were very nice people they just werent up to my standards I guess

Honesty, trust worthiness, and fair pricing are hard to find all in one place and Pates is where it is. Dont expect buddy helping you out in your yard prices but compared to other professional shops you will be pleased. My best example was the over $900 in savings I received on my exhaust manifold replacement on my F-150 Triton. Asheville Ford quote $1500 and a few dollars. They did the delicate frustrating job for less than $600. Thanks again guys!!

Ive been to Pates several times and will not go anywhere else in Asheville for car maintenance. Sharon is very friendly and helpful. They will work you in last minute. They are thorough and they do the job right. Just had great service to replace my brakes. Ive had suspension work, oil changes, tires and brakes done at Pates. Highly recommend them to anyone looking for great mechanics.

I went to Pates today and I am so impressed by the honesty from Mike. I had taken my car somewhere else and wasnt treated right. I will never go anywhere else besides Pates from now on. I have been looking for an honest mechanic here in Asheville to work on several of my vehicles. I called around 15 mechanics, and narrowed down 5 I decided to meet in person. Pates was by far the best and most HONEST mechanic I spoke to and i dont believe I will take me vehicles anywhere else. I hope to place more positive feedback in the future.

My 1997 explorer was taken in for inspection. The engine light was on. They said it was O2 sensor and replaced it but other issues and would not pass it. When I went back to get it and pay the 400 dollars the windshield was broken. Took it to another machanic and sensor had not been changed. My daughter took her vehicle in with similar results. DO NOT THINK IT WONT HAPPEN TO ME!!! IT CAN..The lady in office is nice.

Came to Pates because of the great reviews and made an apt to get the damage on my car checked out for an estimate. They call me a few hours later with the estimate and then try to tell me that theres a $40 release fee. Apparently its what they charge to look at your vehicle. I wasnt told of this fee when I made the apt or when I dropped my car off, only when I wanted to pick it up, convenient timing huh? I flat out refused and the lady finally just said okay your car is ready to be picked up then and I did without incident. If Id been told about this fee beforehand, I would never have considered them. But because they tried to pull this sneaky crap I will NEVER use this place for anything. Good going Pates, you lost a customer AND didnt even get your bullsh* fee. Stupid.

As a vendor in, and a resident of Asheville, Ive been in the unique position of doing business with most places around town where weve both taken turns being the customer to one another, and as most people would expect, most places treat you much differently when they are the customer than they do when you come in with your family. Ive heard that character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you. So with that being said, I had been to Pates several times as a vendor and was very impressed with the friendliness of the owners and mechanics at this location, so impressed that I was sure that if I needed any mechanic work done that this is the place I would go. Having a couple older vehicles it wasnt long before I had the tow truck haul one in to their shop. Same friendliness, didnt change at all. They had my vehicle fixed right and called me the next day. Again not long after that another vehicle needed work and they fixed it promptly and had me back on the road. My girlfriends car needed calipers and a master cylinder and we took it to them and it was done right. They are so thorough and up front about every detail of the process that it removes any doubts and answers any questions. Their lot is also fenced and gated so my investment is safe even though its not in my possession. Most recently this week they fixed my Jeep and knew what was wrong with it in nanoseconds as I described the symptoms. I usually dont leave reviews but Im just so impressed with these guys and lady that Ive got to spread the word. Theres no reason to have to wonder if youre being lied to or ripped off and/or talked down to like youre a moron by your mechanic (which has happened to me at another location) when theres a place like this in town thats so professional, Im very pleased with every single one of my experiences with Pates. Highly recommended.

Pates auto was a lifesaver! Our pacifica suddenly started giving us exhaust problems. Pates auto was the only mechanic that was able to take care of it right away- when every other mechanic said they couldnt until late in the following week. They replaced the egr valve and gasket and made sure it was driving great. And when it was all finished, it was less than the estimated quote the gave us!!! Thank you so much, Pates Auto!

They fixed my car up correctly. Too bad, even though they knew how tight I was on money, that they chose to charge me $20 more than they had just quoted. And that was after they went back and forth on how much they charge per hour as if it was an answer they wouldnt readily know.. Ill probably look elsewhere next time I need work on my car done.UPDATE: I shouldve known better because of my experience years before so I almost didnt leave a review of what recently happened..My husband & I inherited a 2007 car that, though, it was not the least expensive or easiest job, we liked the vehicle & wanted to get it tip top.We took it to our regular awesome West Asheville mechanics & they fixed the parts they specialize in & then recommended Pates for the remaining.I explained the situation to the receptionist/wife, Sharon, over the phone not listing a budget & only asking for it to be made tip top. She clearly didnt listen to me because they fixed a list of items, giving it a clean bill of health & passing its inspection= $1000.They ordered parts we needed to repair the A/C & we brought it back the following week but asked that they take another look because it was still making a scraping, clanking sound= $500. This time however when I went to pay for this part of the repair Sharon called in her husband, Mike, where both of them aggressively were abusive to me (rather than come up with a reasonable middle ground solution to their mistake). He now said that the car wouldnt last long & that he couldnt be at my house everyday to check the oil or that I shouldnt drive it far out of town without a new engine. & good luck finding one! & they even went as far as mocking me for wearing my mask (which is technically the law).Sure enough, a week later the car died & we had to have it towed back to our house where it now sits dead= $130.The reason I bring any of this up at all after I should known better from my first experience with them years ago is because a week later I was getting an inspection for my Nissan at a different mechanics shop I overheard a customer there describing their recent abusive experience at the hands of Sharon & Mike. Another man in the building said that was the third bad story hed heard about Pates Automotive recently.So my conclusion is that despite the fact that I would never normally speak poorly of a small local business (especially during a pandemic) & them having so many past glowing reviews, that if other locals are also suffering at their hands then I have to speak up.Clearly their professionallism & quality of work have taken a nose dive.Dont get ripped off or let someone talk to you like youre a bratty dumb woman. Simply the best mechanic around! I moved here from CA and was in desperate need to find a mechanic who actually knew about carburetors (I own a a classic 1989 Jeep Grand Wagoneer), and I found the Master of Carbs and mechanics at Pates Automotive! I called several other mechanics in the area and they all recommended I go to Pates- they literally said he was the best. His lovely and sweet wife runs the Front Office and has great communication with you, keeping you updated on everything, and what your options are once her husband takes a look at your vehicle. The prices are VERY fair, and he even gave me deals on the parts (I checked out the part prices online, and he was always cheaper!) He wont charge you for work that doesnt need to get done, and is always upfront, trustworthy, and dependable. I have been there several times for multiple different fixes, and they always deliver top quality service and expertise. They even fixed the low hanging door on my jeep (they didnt even tell me- they just did it for free :) when I brought it in for a carburetor adjustment. I havent had to bring any of my other vehicles to him as yet, but you can be assured that I will be bringing them to him when the need arises. They also have several cars for sale outside the shop, and my wife and I have already discussed that it will most likely be the place to buy from when we need another vehicle. Pates has everything and more that you can ask for in a automotive shop, so stop reading reviews and wondering where to go- just do yourself a favor and go to Pates!

Wow!! I have found my new car place!!! Hands down my best experience with car repair in my life! I had been having some issues with my SUV and needed to take it somewhere right away. I had tire work done at Allied Wheel in West Asheville, I called them and asked who they would recommend for auto repair work and they told me to call Pates. I called and she told me to come in right away and they would see what they could do to get me back on the road. I walked in the waiting room and right away they took my keys and with in 15 minutes were able to tell me what was wrong with my car. Turns out I needed some kind of switch for my ignition (see how much I know about cars?) Good news it wasnt crazy expensive to replace, bad news it was on back order and not available for 7-10 days! Long story short I reserved a rental car and they even gave me a ride to the rental car place to pick it up. Super nice and willing to help with what ever they could. She said she would call around to see if anyone had the part available early and would let me know ASAP if so that way I could return my rental car early. Well low and behold she called 3 days later to tell me she had found the part and my car was ready to go! I was just so grateful to find a place that didnt take advantage of my obvious lack of car knowledge. I tell everyone that needs anything done to their car, take it to Pates! I went to Pates on July 2nd, I was in need of a quick mechanic right before the 4th of July, and I had stopped at many shops around town, some giving me really high prices and ALL not being able to help me until the week after the 4th. I decided to stop at Pate’s after it was recommended to me; I spoke to Sharon (best receptionist I’ve ever met!!) and told her my situation and how I needed my car fixed before the 7th, she let me know they were going to be closed on the 4th but if I brought the car in by 8am they would work on it and have it fixed for me before the 4th. I got my car back around 3pm on July 3rd with enough time to get all my paperwork done, I really have to say they care about their customers. Definitely recommended it to anyone who needs a good mechanic in Asheville. Thank You Pates Automotive (:
