I have taken various cars to Mike Byer over a period of many years. My experience has been positive each time. I trust this business to do the right thing; Ive never been disappointed. Mike and the employees are quality people who know what theyre doing. On a side note, there is a nice grassy area for customers (and dogs) to wait if they dont want to be inside! I recommend this business to newcomers or long-time Asheville residents.
Easily the best auto repair company I have ever dealt with. The people who work here are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. Their work is top quality. They set realistic expectations for price/time. The turn around has been surprisingly fast. The prices are clear and fair. I have never felt over-charged or ripped off. If youre in the general Asheville area in need of auto repair, this is definitely the place to go!
Highest possible recommendation for Mike Byer’s Auto.We are in Asheville from out of town for an extended stay. The a/c blower motor in our F150 failed. After an email to Mike (to which he responded over a holiday weekend), he followed up with several phone calls and wedged us into what was already a full shop. Mike personally took the time to look over the vehicle and figure out the issue. When he diagnosed the problem and told me what the repair would entail, I started figuring out which friend to call to come and pick me up, and how we’d sort our busy schedule here without a vehicle. I was stunned when, instead, Mike handed me the keys to a loaner car.Our repair was done later that same day at a fair price. Everything about this shop is outstanding. The shop itself is clean enough to host a church picnic. Everyone we encountered was friendly and professional. And they went out of their way to keep our trip on wheels. If I lived in Asheville, this would be my auto shop for sure.
Mikes team has helped keep my vehicles in good working order since 1996. An excellent mechanic--one you can trust to diagnose and fix whats broken and not mess with what isnt--thats a priority for most of us. I appreciate how Mike will actually show me whats broken or leaking or needing replaced; it builds my knowledge and confidence in maintaining my vehicle. But even more--Mike is truly a decent human being. Theres the time I bumped the button and locked my 6-mo-old twins in my car across the street from his shop. Mike was closing up as darkness fell, and it was starting to snow. I dashed over in bit of panic, but he just grabbed the slim jim and opened the door lock. No charge. There was the accident that crushed my front end/radiator etc.; several observers said the car was totaled. Mike volunteered to meet me at the accident site, made some calls and helped me pursue repairs AT ANOTHER SHOP rather than junking the vehicle. No charge. Lots of folks give up on a car after an accident, but the truth is, the right shop can fix almost anything. This was a Honda Odyssey that got us through young twins and family road trips and much more--with lotsa miles left thanks to years of expert care and maintenance at Mike Byer. They dont do body work though, so let me add a pitch for Silvers Auto service...which got its start fixing busted up race cars. Between these two, Ill never need another mechanic. a clean, quiet and comfortable seating area with wifi if you need to wait in his shop. Big book shelf includes kids’ books. This is a class-act operation, people! I recommend Mike Byers shop 1,000%.
No nonsense, clean shop with mechanics that dont try to push sales on you and care for you and your car. 10/10 love you this shop!
My favorite place to take all our vehicles, foreign and domestic.
Very clean shop and knowledgeable techs. Dog friendly big plus.
Very helpful with getting my car in to be looked at right away. I travel all over th country for work, spending about 3-6 months in each location, and find myself in Asheville NC for the Fall. I typically take my car to the dealership so then all records can be accessed no matter where I may be. My car started making rubbing noises this morning. I called the dealer and was told they were scheduled out to next week. Then I started looking around for other repair shops and kept being told the same thing, cant see it until next week. When I called Mikes they said Friday maybe Thursday(2-3 days). I said I would schedule for Thursday to hold my spot but if I found a place ghat could look at it sooner I would call to cancel. As I gave my information and went into greater detail about my problem Doug said he would get it looked at today and they had a loaner I could drive while it was being worked on. So far I am impressed with the service...to be continued...😉Update: they were very timely in getting back with me. My issue had self resolved and they didnt find anything wrong but did find evidence of what had more than likely occurred. Again, very courteous. I was truly blessed to have found Mikes shop. Though I wont be in the area long enough to bring all my auto needs in the future, they will have my business while I am here and hopefully this review will help you to decide to give them a try.
5 stars says it all!
My fiance went here with his car and they treated him and it really well. They were upfront and honest, and they didnt make up problems on the car just to get more money out of us. Everyone there called and communicated really well.
Best service with honest recommendations. I drive for 30 minutes passing other repair places and would never go anywhere else.
They were very honest with me .
Mike and his team took on a very time and labor intensive job on my 4wd truck. Transmission, transfer case, exhaust, suspension etc. had to be removed and they did an amazing job!I normally dont trust anyone to work on my vehicles but didnt want to take this job on. Mike and his team renewed my faith in mechanics and theyve earned my trust.
Great place for car repairs. Great service. Just dont take your own parts as they only use their own inventory. Nice waiting area!
I have had very good experiences here. Each time I have brought in my old Jetta the work was done professionally and in a reasonable amount of time. Prices were reasonable and the guys at the front desk took the time to explain the repairs, options, etc. This is a very well run shop, Im happy to have found them.
I towed my car to Mike and his staff at 4:15pm on a Monday, distressed with a Honda Civic that wouldnt start (broken starter). As I later found out, this job calls for 2.4 hours of labor as its not an easy fix for an 09 Civic. Mikes shop was busy servicing other vehicles and closed within the hour during which I arrived. Mike really helped me by staying late that night to work on my car, giving me a nice loaner car to drive in the meantime, and coming in early the next morning to finish the job for me. They had it all finished up for me by mid-morning the next day--all for a reasonable price. Mike and his staff are as nice and helpful as they come.
Been going to Mike and his crew for about 10 years now. These people are honest and skillful. Their service has never been anything less than excellent.
I cannot recommend this place enough! Everyone I spoke with was so helpful. The people that work here are obviously very caring people. On multiple occasions they have done what was best for me as a person, rather than what would have made them the most money. They took the time to explain to me what they current problem was with my car, but also what they saw for potential problems down the road so I could be prepared. They never pressured me into letting them fix it, but rather equipped me with information. I am so relieved to have found my new mechanic! I could go on and on about all the little things they did to make my car breaking down as positive of an experience as it could be. Thank you Mike Byer for having an outstanding business!
Honest. Thorough. Detailed. Fair. Fixed an issue other shops attempted to fix but failed, handled all the paperwork needed to get a NAPA parts replacement from the previous shop. Nice waiting area, dog friendly. I hope I never have to come back to see them for complex issues with my vehicle, but if I do, I know theyll take care of me!
If I had to push my car to these guys, I would. The absolute best around!
I was looking for my next Asheville area Independent, as the former German MotorWerks crew had retired/moved on... Mr Byers operation is located in the former facility of German AutoWerks, and it is even improved, facility-wise, if that was possible.Made appt, took in my 19 yr old 2001 X5 for tire install, oil/filter and brake fluid flush: Entire staff is friendly, courteous, professional. Mike Byer gave me a personal tour. Technician Lukes work was Flawless: my new tires were mounted/balanced without a scratch and I am a bit OCD as the 19 style oe 132s wheels were pristine, and they still are after the tire R&R.I have been dragging my cars into shops for 56+ years, (for stuff I couldnt do way back then/dont feel like doing now at 73 yrs old), and I highly recommend Mike Byer Auto & Truck Repair. If you have a BMW, out of warranty, this is ThePlace to go in western NC, imo and in my experience. If you have another brand of car, this is ThePlace to go to... Thank You to Mr Byer and his staff! Two Thumbs Up! 👍👍
Started off nice, saying yeah I can swap an engine in a Mercedes. The fact a guy had started taking a few parts off then quit (went to jail) turned into no I cant if someone else touched it. All I can say is karma.I could probably YouTube how to put the few parts back on lol. Ive changed the cam position sensor, crank position censor, and 4 of the 6 ignition coils myself. Car still ran but none of those fixed the issue. Because I finally figured out there was zero compression in the second cylinder, unsure if its a ring or valve but at the expense of fixing that, itd be better to just replace the entire engine. Unfortunately since a few parts off the top of the engine have been removed, they cant touch it. 🤷♀️Bottom line: if someone else has touched your car, they wont take it. Even if its taking the rest of a trashed engine out (a little less work on Mikes end) and put the new one in.
The team at Mike Byers are wonderful - honest, straightforward, and earnest. It is very obvious that they are empathetic and transparent about their work. Prices are reasonable and service is personal. Cant praise them enough! Highly recommend
Have used Mike Byers for over a decade and have had nothing but great experience. Professional, clear, on time, gives options where appropriate, never pushy.
I had the clutch & flywheel replaced on my MINI-COOPER. MINI COOPERS are not cheap to work on but I was treated fairly, received quality work, and a quick turn around. The appearance of the garage is neat and orderly and the staff is honest and up front. A good place to go for your European Car needs in my opinion They work on all cars as well.
I appreciate the timely repairs with fair, honest estimates. Especially helpful in the time of Covid!
We were from out of town and really worried about driving back home because our car was making a noise that didnt sound good, it was closing time for them and they still put our car up on the lift just to look to make sure nothing was major and we would not have a problem getting home. Thank you so much to them!!! Such friendly people and so helpful!! Very much appreciated!
Friendly owner and staff. Excellent repairs at a very reasonable cost.
I love this place, the service, the kindness... and how HAPPY all the employees seem to be. TRUST. Its everywhere.
Too busy, couldnt see my car. I would have had to wait a week for them to diagnose my car problems
I took my 2008 Mercedes-Benz here for a diagnosis on a turbo under-boost problem. They were able to narrow it down and found the issue. They were honest and communicated with me through the process. The price was fair, and that is all I could ask for. Thanks Mike and team for your help.
As a 1st time, but not last, customer I was totally satisfied. It was great getting good service and not feeling you were ripped off.It was a pleasure dealing with Doug. See you next time.
Honest and very fair pricing
An excellent example of a solid local and trusted shop. Ive gone there several times and driven away feeling that what I asked for was done properly and at a reasonable cost. Reliability is worth a lot to me and Ive not been let down.
Prompt service, great prices, flexible scheduling. I would definitely recommend using their services!
Great service friendly people.fast service.
I have used these folks twice now and each time they gave me clear reports of what they found and options for each including if/when/how to approach each. Their prices are great and things were done when promised. Great folks to work with.
I love these guys. Never had a mechanic be quite so personal, patient and reasonable. They work quickly and efficiently, and dont try to scam you in to anything you dont need. I go out of my way to make sure these are the guys who take care of my car. Absolutely recommend them.
Mike Byer September 3, 2014Mike Byer Automotive135 Coxe Ave.Asheville, NC 28801RE: AppreciationMr. Byer;Just a quick note to let you know that the urgency you demonstrated in repairing my friends Honda was greatly appreciated by all. I realize that the first morning after a holiday, with cars and trucks being towed in, your schedule was quite hectic. The fact that you and your team were able to assist a forlorn college freshman and get her car operative in short order will not soon be forgotten. I’m hoping that neither of my cars ever need repair but in the event they do I would not hesitate to have them delivered to your facility. I will, with confidence, recommend your services to anyone who might need anything from windshield wiper fluid to a complete overhaul. In closing, thank you and your team again for your integrity, honesty, professionalism and for your years of service to those who have relied on your talent.Best regards,
I have been a customer for nearly six years, and I have always been very pleased with the service I received at Mike Byer Auto. Things I particularly like: 1) I can trust them. Early on, I sought second opinions from family and friends who possess auto mechanic expertise, and they always said that what Mike Byer Auto recommended, or the service they performed, made very good sense, and that they clearly did not try to pad the profits by recommending unnecessary services. 2) They cost less than competitors. I also got estimates from other auto mechanic shops in Asheville for some of the problems I was having with my car, and Mike Beyer Auto always had the lowest prices. 3) They usually have a loaner car available, especially when I would schedule an appointment. 4) They worked doggedly to figure out causes of complicated problems, often charging less than they could, considering the number of hours they put in. They like solving problems and wont give up until they determine a solution! 5) At the same time, they will promptly acknowledge if a problem is outside their scope of experience and expertise, and recommend a specialist. 6) The staff are universally polite, courteous, and informative. 7) They dont offer some of the glitzy, fancy schmancy look and feel you see at some of the car dealers, but then again, they charge *much less* than the dealers. If you want to be treated like you walk on water, then go to a dealers glitzy auto shop and pay a lot more. If you want a good old fashion auto mechanic shop, where the staff are smart and work hard, but are also easy-going and down-to-earth, I highly recommend Mike Byer Auto & Truck Repair.
Have been a customer of Mikes since 2008 and have had nothing but consistently successful experiences with him and his staff. In the automotive field, its rare to find a trusted and highly experienced group of personnel who accurately troubleshoot the full variety of automotive issues, and who keep the customers best interests a priority. His facility provides a personalized and comfortable atmosphere where the customer can feel confident in making a well informed purchasing decision. He and his associate, Sumpter, both have a way of reporting diagnostic results in a language that any customer can easily understand. In short, I would recommend anyone to Mike Byer Autoworks.
Josh(?) the taller guy with longer hair working the desk when I came in was very matter-of-fact and helpful. They were able to give me a loaner car so I could get to work while my car was there. They replaced my eVAP system and figured out the reason it was exponentially worse after taking it to Precision Tune Auto on Biltmore was *they left a clamp in my car blocking a key ventilation tube*SOO... yeah either skeevy practices going on there or gross incompetence.Mike Byers guys went above and beyond it seems, and I felt like I was charged appropriately. Either way, this shop has a customer for life.
By far the most honest car repair shop i have ever gone too!❤
Mike Byers us the epitome of professional and reliable!
Mike is the best. Friendly, attentive service that always includes the attention to detail and honesty one requires from a mechanic.
Need your car repaired? Bring it to MBA. They do a great job.
I hope to take my car soon this place was suggested for hybird cars
Mr. Mike Byers and his team appeared to be stand up people. Very personable and friendly. Unfortunately, Ive not had good experiences with them.October 2016, they did about $340. worth of work on the front end. All seemed fine when I picked it up except that the steering wheel was about 25 degrees off. They couldnt understand how that happened but the mechanic told me no problem its a simple adjustment and to bring it in. It would take 5 minutes to adjust, no charge. When I brought it in, the kid out front told me they would have to do an alignment at about $100s. Since I had just had that done, I didnt agree. I left feeling not too happy.February 2017. The rear end on my van was making noise. After reading some reviews and considering that Mike Byers got a lot of good ones, I went to them to repair the problem. $784.00 later, I had new axles and bearings. They told me the ring and pinion was a bit loose and could make some noise but would not be a problem. I left there thinking all was well. I can deal with a little noise.A couple months later the rear ends noise started getting louder. Assuming it was the ring and pinion, I decided to maybe have a limited slip differential put in and that would also take care of the ring and pinion noise. For that, I went to a different mechanic who I trusted. When he opened up the rear end, he discovered that the axles and bearings were shot. My thoughts: Were they not installed properly?Time to call Mike. Mike says Bring it in. He says I should have brought it to him in the first place. Had I known it was the axles he just put in, I would have. He refused to tow it to his shop. He said it was my reponsiblility to get it there. So I had the mechanic who took the rear end apart, put it back together. He charged me $200.Drove it to Mike and his guys replace the axles and bearings with better, top quality ones. No charge. My thoughts: Does Mike use cheap/inferior parts on his repairs? Hmmm... Well, Mike did right by fixing the problem at no charge. But, what about the $200s I incured at the other shop? He repeated that I should have brought it to him. I repeated that I most certainly would have, had I known that it was the axles he installed that failed. Based on what he had told me before, I would think it safe to assume it was a failing ring and pinion, not the axles. We discussed it for a bit longer and agreed he would take it off on the next job.I needed a leaky intake manifold gasket replaced. He had told me earlier that repair would cost $350 to $450.Oct 9th 2017.I bring my van in for the gasket repair. Bill comes in at just under $500.00. They said it took all day but didnt say why. I agree to the higher bill but what about the $200s we agreed to take off this bill. Mike says he never said that! But I remember well our discussion. He mentioned that perhaps the parts supplier would cover it. Rather than getting into an argument, I suggest splitting it. He agrees angrily. I pay Mike $400. Mike tells me never to bring my van there again! Never wants to see me again! So, I leave thinking Why is he mad at me? Im the one having a hard time getting these repairs done correctly. No worries Mike, I have no desire to see you again either.I drive away. Van seems fine. Gas peddle noticably more responsive. I like that. But, new noises?Pinging? Kinda sounds a little diesel-ish. Stopped at the store. Got back in, start it up. Engine throbs a bit but settles down. Driving home something goes Bang! Pull over. Look all around. Cant see anything out of place. Continue on home. Service engine light comes on. Every once in a while I smell gasoline and coolant. The electrical mirror adjustment controls on the engine cover no longer work.So this is thrice now that his repairs were not complete. Do I go back to Mike? I dont really want to. Not much trust there and bad blood. So Im going to pay someone else to fix what Mike Byers didnt? Therefore, I do not recommend Mike Byers.
Far price good service
Been going to these guys for 3 years now and always seem pretty honest with pricing.
Took my car in due to a squeaking noise from the back tire. Was told I needed to completely overhaul the front and back brakes for $1000. Explained $1000 was out of my price range and asked if they could fix what was most urgent and I could bring it back for the remainder, they refused to do anything less than the $1000 repair quoted. Told them I needed a second opinion, then they charged me FORTY DOLLARS for the brake inspection before they would release my car. Subarus R Us in Swannanoa quoted the same repair for half the price. The Mobile Mechanic quoted a third of the price and will come to my house to make the repair. Do not use this guy.
Great service. Very kind and reliable.
Nice space! Very helpful and accommodating!
Told me my truck was to rusty didnt work on it
Really disappointed. Saw their ad in the Mountain Express advertising that they work on Priuses, so I called and set up an appointment. After researching the problem with my car fairly extensively, I was almost 100% sure I knew what the problem was before I went in (the display unit needed to be replaced). They seemed significantly less knowledgeable than I was, and said, Well, the guy that works on Priuses is on vacation. Okay, first red flag: why on earth would you schedule me for a day when the Prius guy is on vacation, when I told you I drive a Prius? Next, they proceeded to inspect the car--apparently testing the connections and batteries--without informing me how much they would be charging me to do so...just a surprise $40 bill at the end. All I got out of the visit was them telling me I needed to replace the part I already knew was broken. I asked if they could give me the part number or an estimate of the cost to fix it, and they were completely unable to do so. Nor did they offer to have me return when the Prius guy came back. Shoddy business practices to say the least. Im quite disappointed, because I was really hoping to have a place to take my car to other than to the dealership. Ill keep looking.
Ive gotten to know owner Mike Byer through the IATN auto community, and Ive always been impressed with his integrity and desire to do a good job. If youre looking for general car repair in Asheville this place is one of the ones Id have on my short list
Have had nothing but exceptional service with Mike Byer Auto and Truck Repair. The provide great service and stand by their work.
