Rented a car ahead of schedule and it was very easy to check in because there was no one there. An Avis customer service rep helped me complete the rental pickup, but gave me the wrong car number to pick up. Nonetheless, the situation was resolved at the exit gate, and I was able to keep the car I was in. However, upon return, I accidentally left my phone in the car (it was pouring rain and the shuttle to the airport was waiting) and have submitted two lost item claims and no response. All the pics of my grandchildren are on that phone and I really need it back. I am lost without it and keep hoping I will receive an email that it was found and I can have it mailed to me. Price was decent and the car was comfortable.

The car itself was very good and the cost was reasonable. But there were 3 major problems. First, during the procedure to rent (handled by an AVIS staff member) the computer crashed 3 times, so he had to restart from scratch and It took a long tome to complete it! Second, there was no instruction manual in the car. Getting it from internet was impossible. I am not familiar with hybrid cars, so that caused me serious difficulties, and at any rate I feel the it should be forbidden not to put a manual in a rental car. Third, after two weeks we did not need the car anymore, so we called to check if it would be possible to shorten the rental period and get a discount. Incredibly, your employee could not provide this simple information and asked us to go to the rental place. So we had to drive all the way from Santa Fe to Albuquerque, just to learn that it was not possible to terminate the rental. Overall, your performances were very poor. On the positive side, the two employees in charge of delivering the car and returning it were extremely efficient: they deserve to work for a better company!.

Battery died while on interstate on hold for 20 minutes. A cop finally jumped me before payless answered. The car then died again when we got to hotel I called Payless again waited on hold 25 minutes. Woman finally answered and says do you need a jump. I said no I need a battery. Her response we don’t do that let me transfer you. Then she disconnected me

Great price. But person for Payless left early. Only one poor guy to manage rentals for Budget, Avis and Payless. Waited in line for at least an hour. A second guy (older, Asian dude) showed up to help, but was soooo slow, it really wasnt that helpful. We ended up getting a much nicer, bigger vehicle- which was fine for the type of trip.

I’ve rented hundreds of cars and never have I had a worse experience. To begin the sad saga that was my recent rental. My flight was delayed and unbeknownst to me Payless cancels your rental reservation if you don’t pick up your rental by COB. I had prepaid for a week long rental so I was rather surprised when I showed up the next morning and the associate told me my prepaid week long rent was canceled, nonrefundable and I’d need to rebook at a price 40% higher than my original rate. After some discussion this was eventually rectified and an hour later I was on my way. Car was fine and the rest of the trip was rather uneventful. When I returned the vehicle the associate checking me in gave us the all clear and I thought that was the end but oh no. 2 weeks later than receive a lettering the mail stating that I would be charged an additional $450 for “excessive dirt”. I imagine this was because they had failed to include floor mats with the vehicle. There was a small amount of dirt and sand but nothing a quick vacuum wouldn’t address and certainly nothing excessive. Needless to say after wasting hours of my life trying to address these attempts at extortion I will never be renting another car from this company and I will certainly be disputing this charge and the other random $50 BS charge for changing my reservation & I just discovered an additional $5 charge that was not authorized and never explained. Absurd. Am I unknowingly on the car rental version of punked? I’ve rented cars from shady companies in multiple third world countries and rarely have I dealt with anything approaching this.

Hard to find the right building even when given directions. Even when you have more than enough on a debit card they still insist on putting a large hold amount on your credit card.

I have NEVER had a rental car that was so dirty inside (cup holders had caked on dirt/mud), the drivers seat had a cigarette hole in it, the rear passenger seat had some kind of white stain, there were all kinds of scratches and obvious marks to the outside. I was extremely disappointed. The vehicle itself wanted to turn off at stops the idle was too low. The passenger seat was loose and would make all kinds of noise heading down the road.

I am absolutely appalled by the way this company runs its business. I rented a car for three days, when I got in the car it was riddled in stains but unfortunately I didn’t have time to go back inside and address it (the line was incredibly long and I had already waited an hour as they only had one person working and she also took her lunch break right as me and 20 other people arrived) as I needed to get to the hospital as this trip was booked because a family member is dying. 18 days later I get a $450 cleaning charge for the stains that were there from the moment I first laid my eyes on that vehicle! Shame on this company. Do yourself a favor and rent from enterprise or hertz and steer clear of this company.

If I could rate 0 I would. The counter lady was INCREDIBLY rude. Had an 8 am reservation, got there at 755am. The car wasn’t ready until 845am. But I’m sure if I dropped the car off 45 minutes late there would be extra fees and charges. WHAT A JOKE!!! If you rent from them be ready to deal with RUDE associates and lateness.

I did not appreciate being charged an additional $40 for gas when I fill up the tank just prior to returning the car. Either the car or scanner must have malfunctioned. I called to notify Payless of the issue and and asked them to recheck the gas gauge. They said there was nothing they could do because they were not at the rental car location. I will be sending the receipt for the gas I purchased and will report the unauthorized charge to my credit card company. I did not understand how something like this could happen.

He told me that my total would be approximately $211 and when I got my bill it was for $400. They charged me $99 for insurance I did not once but they went to a paperless system and she told me to just press okay three times so I think she lied to me and happy press the okay. I rent approximately 220 days a year with national and Enterprise so I am no stranger to the questions asked. I specifically said no extra insurance because my insurance company and company I work for both carry Riders on me.

I at first gave them 5 stars but after this treatment 1 is not even good enough. I have rented from Payless many times even less than a month ago. But this time today no one was here. I have a reservation for 0700 and no one is here. I they were more than 15 minutes late when they showed up!!!!! Never go here!

When picking up vehicle i waited 1 hour and 15 minutes. The rep was not friendly and rushed me to take all insurance coverage not accepting my personal insurance. Do not rent from Payless! They are thieves!

Easy getting a car and the service was real friendly, but they dont tell you up front they put a $300 hold on your debit card Just in case of incidentals. When I call back to talk to the gentleman about it they just kept hanging up on me? 🤷

I also appreciate that you provide hybrid vehicles, because the gas mileage savings was truly unbelievable!!! Absolutely THE WORST EXPERIENCE Ive had with any service. First, I waited over an hour for my rental car. They literally did not have enough cars, although I reserved the car several days prior. Second, they overcharged us significantly, claiming that I turned the car in the day AFTER I actually turned it in. When I returned the car, there was no one there to check me in, but there was a sign stating no one was available, and to leave the keys on the dash. I did that. Then they claimed that I did not turn in the car until 6:30 the next morning. We are disputing this with their customer service, but thus far they have been very unhelpful. Not surprising, given the overall experience. Do NOT rent from these people.

Worst experience ever! I was told I would receive an emailed receipt after returning the car to the specific Payless rental return area.The receipt never came and after contacting Payless two different times I learned the rental contract was still open and they had no record I had returned the car! After several days of emails and phone calls and having to provide Payless a copy of my boarding pass I finally received an email copy of my receipt only to find out I was charged $25 a day for optional insurance that I specifically stated I did not want at the time of picking up the rental.Such a headache!! Definitely not worth the few extra dollars I saved in the lower daily rate.

The agent that helped us was very attentive and gave a lot of tips about things to know. He suggested to upgrade to a stronger car due to high driving elevation. The rental car building is nice and easy to use. Fast and effective shuttle to the airport

The representative who help with the initial rental was terrible! She was not willing to help, very condescending, and confrontational. She does not need to be helping customers, she said she has been there “15” years and you can tell she is stuck in her role and is frustrated with life. She made the whole experience horrible.

Payless sucks. I travel constantly and thought I’d give them a try. They charged me just shy of $800 for 3 day rental. Rental agent told me if I brought back early I’d just get charged the daily rate but I was charged for the entire week. I’m not one to call, prefer to simply call it a lesson learned and vote with my pocket book. See ya!

I have filed a complaint with customer service and am waiting to hear from Payless. I experienced a terrifying tire blow out in the middle of nowhere. And when I called road side and customer service, I was told there was nothing they could do other than to tell me to try to get back to their location in Albuquerque.

I am not the type of person to leave reviews but the lack of customer service the manager in this location is troublesome. I had a bad experience with this location last year, it took for me to call several times, different days to get a hold of the manager, her customer service was disappointing. After a year, I decided to give them a second change. My experience was getting a flat in the first hour of receiving the vehicle and then being charged for the roadside service without approval or notice. I rent vehicles often and had two flats before and never received a bill. After calling several times to get this resolved, I have lost hope. If you like poor customer service this is the car rental for you!

I would give them no stars if possible. Do not rent from this company! When picking up the car it was dirty inside and out. I was given a late fee when I returned it the same day in the evening after hours but at scheduled time and no one to provide me with a receipt. After seeing the extra charge, I returned to the ticket counter and they said that they had no way in their system to change it so gave me a customer service number to call. After calling customer service they said they were doing a system update and I needed to ask the ticket office where I got it from to change it. I then asked to speak to a manager and was placed on hold and no one ever answered. Took over half an hour with service person at main Payless desk calling through to customer service. Still not sure if late fee was credited back.

I have been renting cars for almost 15 years because my brother is a concert promoter. When we picked up the three Vans they where all still a little dirty. Upon returning the vehicles the guy checking in the vehicle had poor customer service and seemed like he was mad that he had to come to work today. Then when returning home and looking at my credit card statement I was charged twice. I asked for my money back and was told that they would start a complain ticket and in 72 hours and someone would contact me. They barely sent me an email back four days later just to tell me they are looking into it. This companys unprofessionalism is what will make me never rent from them again and I suggest no one does either.

I wish I could give this company ZERO stars!! The Payless Co. charged me an extra $24.99 per day for insurance I didn’t request. I explicitly told them I did not want the insurance. They then refused to reimburse me. There was never anyone at their customer counter at Albuquerque NM and when we got our car it smelled of marijuana. I will never use them again and will tell others to use a legitimate company like Avis or Budget. Don’t waste your money at Payless.

I rented a vehicle from the San Diego airport location and was completely unhappy with the rental and customer service. The vehicle was in horrible condition both mechanically and aesthetically. It was filthy and stained throughout the interior. Also, the sales rep at the counter was just that, a slimy sales rep trying to up-sell every possible product available with no concern for my actual needs. I thought I was going to save $10 a day on the rental but ended up costing me more than using a reputable company like Dollar or National. Lastly, 12 days after my rental an additional charge of $55.56 was charged to my card for no reason. DO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY!

I wish I could give zero stars. Was so disappointed with this company and there customer service and how they handle situations. I left a bag in the trunk of my car and went back the next day to get it for them to tell me it’s no where to be found, therefore someone in the company had to have taken the bag, then I’m told by the lady at the front desk that “that will teach you not to leave stuff in places now”. Then when I called customer service they told me the exact same thing and that there’s nothing they can do. NEVER AGAIN.

Payless could do SO much better, but they wont. After arriving almost 2 hours late to ABQ, I was 7th in line just before midnight with only 1 representative working. He was very aware of how long the line was and wasnt interested in making it quicker for any of us. Each customer approached his counter to hear the exact same thing. Oh I see youve rented an economy car... AND youre headed to Santa Fe?? Oh my, that wont work. There are twists and turns every where and youll gain 1,700 feet in elevation trying to get there. A 4-cylinder just wont make that.Seriously.Every. Single. Customer. in front of me fell for it. They upgraded. And with a cheesy smile on his face, sent them on their way.He attempted the same with me. I replied, Yep, got it. 1,700 ft elevation gain. Im from CO, you cant talk to me about elevation. Please give me my reserved 4-cylinder, no insurance and let me be on my way. He insisted, Oh youll remember me, youre going to want to trade this in. You can do that once you are in Santa Fe. I hope you make it.Really guy?PAYLESS!!!! This is NOT okay. His little talk lasted 10-15 minutes per person, and then all those people were in line at the exit gate. We had to wait an average of 8-12 minutes there too just so that another person could check my ID and rental contract again, then write something down manually. I appreciate you employed someone with disabilities but the overall system created the third 1 hour + delay that day. I got to my hotel after 2am.I will spend more money next time to not deal with this, gladly.

DO NOT RENT A CAR FROM PAYLESS! We rented a brand new Mazda SUV and drove it from Albuquerque, NM to Santa Cruz, NM, a 1 1/2 hour drive. Upon arrival, the SUV was smoking. We checked the oil and it was low. Upon calling Payless, we were told our only option was to have a tow pick us up and for us to drive with the tow all the way back to Albuquerque, were they would then give us a replacement rental. This is our vacation and spending what would amount to a half a day for replacement, was not appealing. Payless said we could fill it with oil and they would reimburse us for the cost of the oil. We drove another 250 miles and the vehicle is smoking again. We called Payless and were told the same thing! Payless should bring us a replacement vehicle. We should not have to waste our vacation driving to replace a rental! Please DO NOT RENT from Payless!

My rental broke down midway through my trip and was replaced with a lesser class, smaller vehicle. I was still charged the rate for a full size truck for the duration of my rental. I also paid my rental in advance and was then charged an extra $100 at the counter when I picked it up initially. After my rental was turned in, they could not process my return and then, get this- I was then charged another $60 nor could they provide me a receipt for my rental. Horrible experience....

Would give less if I could! Two of the vehicles they offered me were dirty inside including a massive hairball in the door. Returned the vehicle full of fuel and they charged me for filling with fuel at $9.99 a gallon. I will never rent from them again. Stay away from these scammers.
