Like others who have posted reviews here, I was in Worcester visiting family for the weekend and hoping to find a bjj gym to train at. I also have an 8yr old daughter who trains and a young nephew who is interested in checking it out. I came in for an adult class on a Saturday morning and brought the kids along. The instructors are legit, very thorough and clear in breaking down techniques, and everyone seemed humble and welcoming. Overall there’s a great team atmosphere and classes seem well structured. Class size was large with a variety of experience levels and body types to roll with but also plenty of space to move around since the gym itself is sizable. It’s also worth noting how clean and airy the gym is.On top of all this, Dan came out and personally instructed the kids even though there were no kids classes scheduled! Needless to say this was much appreciated.I’d highly recommend this school and will definitely be back the next time I’m in the area!
While I was back home in Worcester for the month, I started training here with very little prior BJJ experience. I found it to be a really nice learning environment. All the coaches were amazing teachers, and it felt like they went out of their way to help and give instructions for a beginner like myself. To go along with that, the other students were all very friendly and welcoming. Ill definitely be coming back here to train the next time Im in town.
Love this place! The coaches and teammates make you feel like family! Everyone is very humble and always willing to teach you anything you ask!
I stopped in for a few classes about a month ago while traveling for work and it was way more welcoming than I could have ever expected. The owner showed me the remodeling they were working on and it looks like it will truly be a great gym space. The instructors were knowledgeable, helpful, inclusive, and because of the class structure you get partnered with multiple different people so you dont get left out and its great for more experience for training as well. Really hoping to get sent back out near the area to be able to stop out again!
This is an awesome place to get in shape and learn valuable self defense skills. The coaches and higher belts are very skilled and patient. Ive felt great vibes and lots of encouragement every time I go. Theres a lot of sparring so you really can measure your progress and feel the energy of a fight without the beef. Coach Dan has high standards and the level of talent at this gym shows that. This is amongst the best of decisions Ive made in my adult life.
I spent a few days rolling here while I was back for Xmas break. I was thoroughly impressed with the skill level of the members and the instructors. The members and instructors of the gym were friendly and welcoming. Max and Dan are highly technical black belts and I could tell care a lot about helping their students learn. I would highly recommend this gym for anyone in the New England area and I will definitely be dropping in again when Im back visiting family in Central MA.
Worcester MMA is the real deal! I previously trained BJJ for two years in Illinois and lived in Worcester, MA for five months of training at work. When looking in the area for a good gym, I did not look any further than here due to the welcoming atmosphere and high-level talent on the mats. Coach Dan is an outstanding person that truly cares about the advancement of his students on and off the mats. There are a variety of students here with different skill sets from beginner white belts to advanced brown and black belts that are all willing to help you learn. Also, a great part of this school is the amount of live rolling you are able to do after each class. If I lived in Central Massachusetts all year round, this would be my school of choice!
Came here for my first class today, I live in New York and train at a gym out there but i’m often in Worcester. Everyone here was crazy welcoming and the gym has some real experienced fighters who will work with you. The space is big and clean and the coaches take time to show individual attention to everyone to make sure you’re getting all the details right. 100% recommend this gym to anyone who lives in or around Worcester or to anyone who is just stopping by and looking for a place to train for a day or two. I’ll be at this gym every time i’m in Worcester now.
Great competition focused gym. Head coach Dan teaches solid fundamentals and advanced techniques. The vibe of the gym is friendly. The intensity of rolling is up to you, with no pressure if you want to sit out a roll.Their is a big student base with lots of different rolling partners. I always leave feeling exhausted but good. Lastly, the facility is big and clean.
WMMA/Team Abusado is hands down the best place to train and has everything you will need to thrive as a martial artist and as a person. The coaches are friendly, skilled teachers, and amazingly talented Jiu Jitsukas. The head-coach/master-sensei, Dan Simmler, is always available, supportive, a seemingly endless source of knowledge, and works hard to create an empowering environment for all of his students. Beyond an amazing crew of coaches, the WMMA community is equally outstanding. People from all walks of life can be found flourishing, together, in this Dojo. Put whatever preconceptions or worries you might have about martial arts and MMA dojos aside, and visit WMMA/Team Abusado. You will see that it is a friendly, welcoming environment, and you will transform with this community if you put in the time. From the children’s classes that typically have between 8-15 students and multiple coaches to keep the kids moving/growing, to women only seminars, to private lessons to help get you over that stubborn plateau, I cannot overemphasize how great this community is. Whether you are looking for competition, self-defense, mental-physical self-cultivation, a place where your kid can learn discipline and burn off that extra energy, Worcester MMA/Team Abusado is what you are looking for.
Great school, Dan is a very personable and knowledgeable teacher. World class athlete, but knows how to relate to a novice such as myself when I was just getting started in the sport. Trained there for about a year and a half. He teaches just about every class and is very good at breaking down the moves/submissions/position step by step. Gym itself it good, mats are always clean and the encouragement from other students makes for a great atmosphere, which is a reflection of the respect that Dan shows all of his students. Highly recommended.
I can’t say enough good things about this place. The only thing I regret is not joining up sooner. The coaches are awesome, are always more than willing to explain and go the extra step to make you better. Not only the coaches but it seems as though everyone that trains there wants to get better and wants everyone else to get better. A true team environment and I am so happy to be a part of it!
My son started about 3 years ago and I wanted to help him practice at home, so I decided to join. Well I got hooked. Since then my wife and youngest son has joined the family of Team Abusado. Coach Dan and Coach Max and all the other coaches are incredible instructors. What I like about this academy is the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The higher belts are always helping the lower belts. When you roll against a higher belt they roll so that you can learn, not so they can crush you. I would recommend this academy for anyone who wants to get fit, learn self-defense or wants to compete.
We have spend countless hours developing curriculum for all our programs, consultations with sports psychologists on the best ways to create the best environment for learning and growth. Out facility is clean and our classes (4-6/day) always start on time.It is very hard for new students to know what they are getting...they assume because they walk into a nice facility it must be nice all around but it is important to check out all aspects of many schools so you know what you are getting. There is a reason out blue belts beat and submit our competitions purple and brown belts. There is a reason we win team titles with less than ten competitors and the other teams have 80-100+. Our curriculum are designed for fast advancement and really learning your craft. Whether you are here for competition, to lose weight (the record so far is 138lbs!!!) or to fight MMA we have classes for you. Our kids program is the only one of its kind in the USA. We have developed it over 6 years and from consulting dozens of educational professionals and specialists in order to create the best training environment for your son or daughter. If you are considering martial arts for either yourself, your children or the whole family you to check us out! You will not be disappointed! W have adults ages 18-64, a huge teen program and have structured classes for kids ages 3 and older!
I’m in town for the week and dropped in at Coach Dan’s academy tonight. Everyone was super welcoming and the training was top notch. I can’t recommend this gym enough. Thanks Coach, OSS!
I was able to train here for about a week while visiting family in the area. What an amazing place to train! Excellent instructors, great vibe, and everyone is super friendly.
Everything about SBJJ/WMMA is incredible. The coaches knowledge the the team are unmatched.I came to the gym with very limited experience, and the whole team and coaches were very supportive while I fumbled through my first class. Each class I went to everyone was very helpful and would take time during drills to make sure I was doing everything right. The higher belts were great about letting the lower belts set the tone, and would make sure all the rolls were competitive and everyone was getting better. I tried out a few other gyms before going here, and no one else was even close.
Outstanding coaches and team atmosphere!Coach Dan is awesome and amazing and by far the best experience I have had learning and developing skills not only on the mats but in life!
I was in town on a work trip and wanted to get in some Jiu Jitsu while on the road. I found Worcester MMA near my hotel and dropped in for a no gi class. Coach Dan Simmler and his students were welcoming and treated me like it was my home gym. The gym had a ton of Matt space and plenty of great students to work with. I walked out with a few new moves I was excited to try out at my home gym. I definitely will stop in again the next time I am in Worcester, and I would recommend Worcester MMA to anyone looking for a top notch Jiu Jitsu gym in the Worcester area!
If your are looking to learn a martial art, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the way to go and Worcester mixed martial arts is the place to go. Top ranked instructors and amazing workouts. This place is always open seven days a week with great schedule. Truly a five star Academy.
Best in New England
Ive been training at WocesterMMA for a little over two years. Coaches and facility are excellent. Curriculum is geared towards your experience level. Im always welcomed warmly. There is a good amount of live rolling at every class and you see vast improvements across the board with students. Attention to detail is always present. Higher belts take an active role in joining lower belt beginner classes to assist in the progression of lower belts. The academy is active on the tournament circuit. Head instructor is active on the tournament circuit as well. New building is currently being renovated and built out. I strongly encourage anyone interested in BJJ looking for classes in the Worcester area to stop by and check a few out. Ive lost 40+lbs and gained a few friends in the process. Oss
Great coaches and teammates!
Joining the team was one of the best choices I ever made. Jiu jitsu has changed my life!
One of the few Jiu Jitsu classes where you get to start from the feet, which in my opinion is pretty important... especially if you intend to take up jiu jitsu for self defens!. All instructors here go through courses to become certified to teach, to make sure that all of the students feel welcomed in a seemingly foreign environment, not to mention so they learn proven techniques. I would recommend anyone opened to the idea, to at least try out brazilian jiu jitsu, but should make sure that their local bjj school has qualified instructors such as worcester mma.
Absolutely AMAZING! I was scared to start training jiujitsu, but they team and coaches are so friendly and patient. I dont mind training with the boys but I was so happy to come to class is see 14 girls in my first session. Being from NY I was eager to meet new people and make new friends. Worcester MMA and Jiu-Jitsu has become like a second family to me and I can honestly say its been one of the best decisions I have made in a long time! I looked into ever school in the area and the instruction and reputation here spoke for itself. Seeing so many women in class was icing on the cake for me. Come take a class Ill try not to choke you :)
Wow, the business practices this place employs is HORRIBLE... I trained there for a short time and the training was fine. Then, I lost my job and cancelled my membership. They then sue me with no regard to my situation. I wouldnt send my worst enemy here and would avoid this place like it was the plague. My guess is they learn their business practice from Bernie Madolf.
Ive been training at WMMA for over two years now, and I cant praise coach Dan Simmler enough. Hes incredibly dedicated to helping each and every one of his students - no matter what their goals are, losing weight, learning something new while having fun, or being a competitor. All based on a second to none technical foundation of BJJ. Ive trained at other gyms in the past and what stands out the most to me about this team is how positive of an environment Dan has created. He occasionally throws charity tournaments, bbqs, special team trips (training on the beach!) - it truly will become your second family!
I dont know who wrote the single negative review below but I do think its a very narrow opinion. Coach Dan Simmler is a great Jiu-Jitsu teacher and a great person to work with and puts a ton of time into this school. Not only that he has progressively put a lot of effort into this school since it began and I would ask anyone to find a better looking or equipped facility nearby.Coach Dan competes widely and actively encourages this if it is something your looking for, he is fanatical about the martial arts he practices and seeks to learn from the best wherever possible; this means you get some good quality teaching. If you just want to work out this is a great place to come also.I trained at this school in the past and recently plan to train here again. I also plan to have my child train here also.Great guy, good people, outstanding facility and 1st class material being taught!
I train at wmma nd they are great teach well people are friendly and u learn alot of take downs nd more!
I needed to get in shape and didnt want to go the traditional gym route. After hearing a radio personality talk about BJJ and how it helped him get in shape I decided to give it a try. I searched for BJJ gyms in Worcester County. I visited and took an intro class at each. I was immediately hooked. I ended up enrolling at Serra New England/Team Simmler and have been training a year now. I am in the best shape of my adult life and I owe it to SBJJ. The community at academy is supportive and the training is top-notch. I highly recommend SBJJ if you are considering training bjj in the Worcester area.
I started training at SimmlerBJJ in March 2010 and have lost over 40 lbs. and competed numerous times at local tournaments. Having studied different Martial Arts through out my life I can say SimmlerBJJ is by far the best studio I have ever trained at and have become a life time student of BJJ because of this...I did the research and asked the questions and I am impressed everyday I train at the skill and commitment shown by the instructors along with their willingness to work with you until you get it right. Dan Simmler and his instructors are legit and respectful, I highly recommend this school for all your training in BJJ and MMA.
