I have been here 3 times and each experience has been a highly professional, patient, and empathetic one. While no one wants to have to go to the ER with a pet, if you have to go anywhere in greater Boston, this is the place to go. My most recent visit was yesterday with my senior Pit/Boxer mix (11+ years old) who was suddenly struggling to walk and stay upright. From the moment we walked in the door, we were treated so well. The waiting area was comfortable and felt safe during COVID. They have water for people and pets, and staff came to apologize for the wait (which wasn’t bad at all at a place like that). The neurologist intern, Dr. Chris Masterson was amazing. He took time to explain to us what was going on in an even and reassuring way. He gave us all our options and made sure we felt like we knew what choices we had for diagnosis and treatment. Through interacting with him, it is clear he deeply cares about his patients and their people. His bedside manner was exceptional. We are so thankful for him and MVRH. I only wish we could make this our regular vet! This place is a gift to have close by!
My cat received a very comprehensive examination to determine their illness. The Drs kept communicating with me to learn more about my cat, symptoms, behaviors, etc., and clearly explained their plan of action, findings, and next steps. All the staff were very professional and treated my pet with compassion and love. I will highly recommend this Hospital for any pet parent having a health emergency with their pet.
We were referred to Mass Vet by our family veterinarian after our 3 year old boxer collapsed at home and his X-rays showed multiple large masses in his lungs. Only after he was grossly misdiagnosed for several months, he was put through a biopsy surgery at the most advanced stages of his disease, suffered complications from undergoing surgery in such a frail state, and died in the ICU where he had stayed for 10 days after that surgery, from Disseminated Pulmonary Blastomycosis. For months, in and out of appointments with Internal Medicine we were told that his masses were due to inhaled ash from the fireplace that happened to be lit at the time of his collapse. Over those months I raised questions and concerns with our specialist when things didn’t add up. I asked if he considered that the smoke from the fireplace could have been coincidence, since our dog had been around campfires before with no issue. I asked why it was taking so long for his symptoms to resolve, despite being sent home after each recheck with prednisone and no thought to change his treatment course or suggestions for further diagnostics. Once the vet decided it was this ash problem (which he also mentioned no clinical precedence could be referred to for it), he stopped looking for the actual problem. I let him know that at least to us, our dog didn’t look great or healthy at all, and that he was losing weight and acting lethargic. I also objected to waiting so long in between rechecks, often pressing for the doctor and client care specialists to see him sooner, especially when his symptoms started worsening. I even touched base with our family veterinarian, because the hospital wasn’t very good at keeping him looped in. Time and time again, my concerns were dismissed by this specialist and he encouraged me to stay the course:The fireplace incident had to be the cause. He just needed more time to respond to the medication. He looks fine despite his X-rays, and he’s still eating and drinking. The FNA results and negative blood fungal titer meant it was not a fungal infection. Blastomycosis doesn’t happen around here. This is the best approach for treatment, and it is also the least risky. “If it were my dog, this is what I would do.”We now know that the fireplace had nothing to do with his first symptom of collapsing on the floor in the living room, and that collapse has been observed as a symptom of pulmonary blastomycosis, as is initial response to steroids, lethargy, and weight loss.Even though is X-rays were terrifying “he looks good” became the pause on the alarm. The steroids had side effects of increased thirst and hunger, which explains why he was eating and drinking regularly.Muscle loss also happens with steroids, which was the assumed cause of him losing weight. FNA results are only useful if something is found, and if nothing is found, it should not be interpreted as truly negative for anything tested. Blood titers are commonly negative, and a urine test would’ve been more sensitive, with 93% accuracy in detecting low levels of fungal infection. We were never offered this simple test, despite precedence of it being used within that hospital network.Although uncommon, blasto can happen outside of endemic areas, and is often misdiagnosed as primary lung cancer. His X-rays mirrored many of those from dogs who had been diagnosed with blastomycosis.Had I been informed of the risks that go along with waiting to treat a possible fungal infection, I would have asked immediately for the biopsy surgery as the most logical and least risky next step. Because for pulmonary fungal infections (blastomycosis especially), immunosuppressants such as corticosteroids are the last thing you want a patient to take, and any delay in appropriate treatment can be fatal. $26,000.00 paid. The love of our life, lost. Still waiting on an apology for the vet being so catastrophically wrong and for not taking our dog’s condition as seriously as it should’ve been. Critical Care Doctors were fantastic, this review is not aimed at them.
I can’t say enough good things about the staff at Massachusetts veterinary referral hospital. My little man was a frequent visitor to the emergency department and the oncology department for the better part of a year. Everyone was kind and compassionate, and despite the fact that he was there for chemo, my dog looked forward to his visits, trotted in happily, and I felt completely comfortable knowing he was in the best hands. A big thank you to Dr. Kaye & Jenna. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.
I would not recommend taking any animal here unless you are absolutely desperate. They are extremely aggressive when it comes to payments and seems as though it is all they care about. My cat was receiving chemotherapy there every week for a month and a half. I paid them every single week, anywhere from $300-$800, depending on the treatments. Now, I am full aware things need to paid for, and I am not against paying. But during this extremely difficult time they were completely unsympathetic and told me my cat wasn’t to be picked up until I paid for his visit. I had already spoken to the front desk receptionist and told her that I would call as soon as I got home as my bag was left at my house. Now remember, I have been taking my cat there weekly for about a month and a half prior to this visit. I paid every single time, never ever not paid. This woman then continued to call me THREE times for a payment after already telling her I would call back with a card. They don’t care about your pets, unfortunately. They care only about money. I will never be returning to this awful place.
Our experience with Mass Vet Hospital was outstanding when our pet recently had to be brought to the emergency room for a particularly severe case of gastroenteritis. Our pup had to spend 4 nights in the hospital during which we received morning and evening updates and consultations. The doctors were knowledgeable, caring, and empathetic. Our pup is now home and recovering nicely. A big thank you to the MVRH team!
Awful. My dog was very sick and bleeding. They were too busy to help... you are in the business to help animals. Not turn them away.. shame on you. And your so called vets. Did not want to give you any starsReally???. Who determines how critical a dog or cat are, without seeing them.? And you dont believe bleeding is critical??. The outcome, could have been a lot different, if we were not seen by another emergency room..
Look, I dont expect miracle workers. The hospital cannot save every animal that comes in but I expect accountability and compassion. We dropped off our cat for what should have been a simple procedure. We were thrilled when they said we could pick her up after a few tests were done. When we picked her up, she was lethargic and smelled like a homeless dog. She was also soaked in urine. They had told us that she had eaten but she refused to go near her food. After a couple of phone calls with a late response from the vet on call, she had to be brought back two days later because she had a pulmonary embolism and was close to death. Why the embolism? because the techs ignored her for 24 hours and did not check her when she pulled her IV out. She would have been fine if they had bothered noticing she had a blood clot due to pulling the IV out. $5,000 later, we had to take her there to be euthanized. We had a scheduled appointment, the front desk forgot that we were there taking walk ups while I stood there. Then they said they could not find employee in charge of arrangements for euthanized pets so we waited an agonizing 45 minutes to spend the last five minutes with our beloved cat. Dr. Caudal is the best doctor they have and he did everything right but a couple others are uncaring and will not properly diagnose your animal. The employees we encountered are too busy cackling and eating to do their job. When we spoke to a manager, she told us that the employees are stressed out and just letting off steam. Guess what? The pet owners who entrust their animals with proper veterinary care are stressed out too and the last thing they want to hear when a doctor is telling them that their pet is going to die is unprofessional employees laughing in the background. NEVER AGAIN.
The staff is incredibly considerate and honest and were so grateful for the care they took to answer all our questions.
I would not recommend this practice at all. When I booked a neurology appointment for my cat Luna, they took all my information and told me it would be $300 for the office visit. I thought this was a little steep, but not terribly unreasonable, since specialty vet care can be expensive. A week later, on the morning of the appointment, they called me to say they were having trouble getting her old MRI records, and if they didnt receive them in the next hour, wed have to cancel the appointment. I was a little annoyed that they waited until the last minute to let me know, but I agreed and said Id call the previous vet and get them sent over right away. That was when the lady on the phone let me know that by the way, instead of this visit costing $300, it would actually cost $650 more, because thats how much it costs to have their neurologist look at the report for an MRI that Luna had gotten done almost a year ago. I was confused... why would it cost so much to look at an old MRI report? She explained the neurologist likes to look at the MRI herself in case they missed anything, so that $650 is to get a second opinion on her old MRI. I explained I felt confident in that MRI, it correctly diagnosed her condition, it was now a year old, and I simply didnt want a second opinion. She said I HAD to get the second opinion. After a lot of back and forth, I even asked if we could just forget about the MRI, pretend shes never had one and just have a neurology consult. She said this would not be possible, and that we would have to cancel the appointment. I am beyond frustrated that they (1) charge $650 for the vet to look at the MRI (thats 50% of what the procedure had cost!), (2) absolutely refused to see me unless I paid them $950 for a simple neurology consult, and (3) communicated all of this on the morning of the appointment! Because of my cats health issues, Ive worked with multiple vets, and I have never met such an inflexible, uncaring, and expensive practice. I have no doubt that if I did bring my cat here, they would continue to push expensive treatment and leave little room for other options.Fortunately, this turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as I was able to get an appointment the next day at another practice 30 mins away. I had a wonderful experience there, their neurologist happily looked over Lunas MRI before the appointment, and the visit cost a grand total of $186.25.I would absolutely explore other neurologists in the area before going to Mass Vet. Not everythings about money, but I would much rather go to a practice that looks out for the best interests of me and my pet than one that clearly has other interests at heart.
We are in different times so when people go to Mass Vet or any vet you need to remember that. The wait is long but I was told that in advance so expectation was set properly.I was greeted by Jen (or Jess sorry cant remember exactly) who took my Golden in to building. She was extremely professional, listened to my concerns and had empathy. We had an appointment with Dr Haber and didnt know what was wrong with my poor boy. We were chasing ghosts. She made me completely aware of her thoughts for exploratory diagnosis and costs. Yes its expensive but again transparent so I dont get the surprise mentioned by some reviewers.Bottom line is we found out was was wrong and unfortunately he was not treatable so we lost my buddy that day there. The staff was amazingly comforting and empathetic. I am sad we lost my boy but comforted in the care he received to the end
My kitten bit into one of my medications when I accidentally dropped it at 12 am. I found this hospital on google. They were very thorough, compassionate and up front of cost of care. They gave multiple options and price points. I definitely think this place is an essential service.
TLDR: they will make sure your money clears and then the patient love stops. My dog had 2 blown out knees and needed pretty much immediate surgery in order to walk again. We got an appointment pretty quickly to see the doctor and we were told both knees needed surgery. So we did the first one for above $4,000. After the surgery it was obvious that the surgically repaired knee was not working correctly. We went back for 4 follow ups, which we were charged $200 each time. Essentially we were told “these things happen”..... our dog is now handicapped for the rest of her life. And the knee that was not operated on, healed and works fine now. The only thing this organization does worse than surgery is customer service. In order to get the dog the pain medicine she needs to live on now for the rest of her life, we need them to respond to chewy order request or our voicemail. They do that when they “have time”.Choose your doctors wisely. I would not trust this place with any animals I own in the future. If I could give it 0 stars I would.
I am really shocked to see any negative reviews. I am an anxious person by nature and my pets are my family. With that being said I have nothing but positive things to say. Over the years, I have had to come here several times for different reasons with different animals. I have always been treated with concern and compassion. Yes, sometimes there is a wait. Its a hospital! Cases are prioritized. I trust their professionalism.Yesterday I couldnt get in to see my regular vet at all, not even a sick call, until November!! I was more than happy to wait a few hours in the parking lot to have my dog seen, even if we got bumped a few times for more serious cases. I actually find that comforting. We might (hopefully not) need that response one day too. I have 100% faith in this hospital and the staff. Thank you for taking such great care of us!
I brought my cat to Mass Vet for an emergency visit last week. As with any emergency, it was unexpected and I was very anxious about the entire process. They saw my cat very quickly and called with an update within a few minutes of my cat being seen (COVID protocols kept me in the car during the visit -- which was also hard but given the quick response and the communication, I was put at ease). All of the vets and staff took great care of him, not to mention they were very honest about my cats health, and they were very understanding of what we were going through and the stress of having a sick pet. I was very appreciative for their patience and openness with all of my questions. Very high quality of care and highly recommend for emergencies.
I had a wonderful experience today bringing my cat Woodrow in for a Neurology consult with Dr. Silver. Check in process was easy, Tech came out quickly to bring him inside and soon after he went in I received my phone call from the Dr. As a Certified Veterinary Technician myself, handing over my pet into another hospitals care even for a consult was difficult for me but I got nothing but positive vibes from start to finish. Dr. Silver patiently answered all my questions and gave me confidence going forward with my cats condition. I have no problem admitting I am an intense/anxious pet owner (It’s why I become a Tech in the first place) and I would recommend this hospital to friends/family/coworkers easily.
My dog was misdiagnosed at another emergency hospital weeks previous after running many tests. The doctor here saw what she thought it might be immediately. She ended up being correct. The doctor was wonderful; she was able to connect with me and explain what she thought was going on. During the healing process the hospital was there for me if I had concerns/questions. Best place ... it’s a long drive but way worth it. They are awesome.
For anyone who is looking to bring their animal here, please do NOT! The neglect of your loved animal, who you think you’re putting in good hands, is in jeopardy! I wouldn’t normally go out of my way to write a review BUT what that being said, there was a very sad and unfortunate situation that ended in death that DIDNT HAVE TO! Long LONG and sad story short, I would go elsewhere!!
Very pleased with quality of care and communication. Cost aside (all vet surgery is expensive), we are very pleased with the care our dog has received. I was prepared to be underwhelmed but was impressed by the level of professionalism and communication. In my case every person I spoke with seemed sincere and answered all my questions without being rushed - bottom line- Zeus is doing great and that’s what matters most. This is a busy place and they did their best to move things along. I had to make 2 emergency visits, one very late on a snowy night and both went well - I would certainly use them again.
. Not confident they gave me the right medication because they said they had to fix it. They didn’t even clean her earsWaited 4.5 hours for an ear infection. The last 45 minutes were to wait to pay. They would not let me use the bathroom. I understand we are in a pandemic but I would guarantee they have all been vaccinated. Extremely unprofessional and pricey.
Took our dog here after he ate something he shouldn’t have, the staff was amazing and very responsive. Pulled up to what looks like a normal ER entrance and the intake was very quick so as to render aid immediately. Can’t thank these guys enough for their help!
PLEASE GET PET INSURANCE BEFORE GOING HERE!! Once your dog is diagnosed, the insurance can no longer cover it. It will save you a lot of money. I wish one of the nurses was kind enough to let me know, seeing I’m a teenager and probably don’t work a full time job yet. The services here are great, the doctors are very kind and I felt comfortable allowing them with my dog. Only downside is the pet insurance.
I would not recommend bring any pet here if it can be helped. You can’t go inside with your animal and you have to wait in the parking lot for hours and hours with no updates. I spent three and half hours there tonight and left with no answers.
The entire staff at Mass Veterinary Referral Hospital provided absolutely amazing emergency care for our dog Frank. Dr. Eisenberg was incredibly thorough, compassionate, and professional. She was in frequent communication about Franks test results and treatment options. We could not be more thankful for her help during a stressful time. Thank you so much!
Ive had occasion to use this office for specialized doctors over the years, so I wasnt a new client, but in an emergency, you feel so out of sorts. MVR takes away any stress and worry when taking care of your animal during an emergency. You and your pets are treated like you are the only patient they have. You feel secure, after seeing how gentle they are with your pet. If end-of-life services are needed, you wont find a more compassionate staff. Ive had one nurse shed tears with me, seeing my children cry. They truly care for the pet and want everything to be peaceful and pain free. Even during covid, when the restrictions were in full force, you never feel left out or put off the loop. I will always use their emergency services when needed, because I know my animals deserve the very best.
Harry M.on BirdEye★★★★★★★★★★19 days agoI brought my 11 year old dog to Mass Vet on 11/28/20 as he was in distress. He hadnt been eating and had trouble pooping for about four or five days. Louie was lethargic and just not himself. When I carried him out of our home, I didnt realize it would be for the last time! So heartbreaking. Louie was in the care of Dr. Susanne Szekely who was WONDERFUL! She ran tests that showed Louie had a cancerous mass in his stomach which was restricting his bowels. Dr. Szekely stated he was also anemic and Surgery wouldnt guaranty that Louie would survive it. She recommended putting him down and we painfully agreed. My wife, son and I came back that afternoon to say our Goodbyes and tell Louie how much we loved him. I know we did the right thing, as hard as that was and still is 3 days later. Susanne was with us all the way and let us hold Louie as he was leaving this world for a better place. Thank you Dr. Szekely for your professionalism and caring manner. We are hurting still but thinking of how you handled our situation eases some of the pain we are feeling. God Bless you Susanne and the staff at Mass Vet.Harry, Suzanne and Michael McCarthy
I have to say I am in appreciation because my dog is alive ad well, I brought her in on a holiday weekend, and it was very busy, and the vet did what she thought was needed. So after coming up with thousands of dollars for a retainer she had an emergency spay done. After the procedure, we were told all went well, but funny enough she did not need the spay, because she did not have what they originally diagnosed her with. Really all she actually needed was antibiotics.. which cool, I get it, they did what they thought was right, and again my dog is alive we were grateful. We were told that they would try to cut costs where they can because they were prepared for a more riskier spay, it would still be pricier than going to a non-emergency setting though. I cannot fault them for doing their job.but this is where I was most disappointed.I called them four days before our two-week post-op appointment with some concerns in regards to the spay site (My puppy is well a puppy and was not living her best sedentary life) so I was concerned she messed herself up because she had fluid like sacks on both sides of the site. I was told to take some pictures of the area send it to them and a doctor would check it out. We were told the site itself looks good, but its hard to tell in the photo about the concern I had, so they left it as they will check it out on her scheduled recheck in four days, but for now they are not overly concerned.Friday comes day of recheck, I get there checkin and was told that they cancelled my appointment (obviously I did not get the message). They decided from my photos all was well, even after I had called concerned about soft lumps inside her surgery site. So, after paying them almost 5 grand, they could not even be bothered to do her post-op recheck, even after concerns were made, and this appointment meant peace of mind after a pretty traumatic event.** Update, 2/5/21 a member of the team did follow up on this review, and truly helped rectify the situation. Hearing an apology, and having our experience met with understanding was deeply appreciated, and noble.
We waited for over 4 hours for emergency on Sunday. They did not call or text us constantly for update but kept us for waiting for hours. Also they told us to wait in the parking lot if someone came to pick our pet. But we just waited forever without getting any information. I strongly not recommend this place if your emergency level is not high. Therefore, the hospital should provide the most updated information about the waiting time or other related information in 30 or 45 minute intervals. So that customers can behave accordingly.
Our dog was recently diagnosed with multiple forms of cancer. Mass Vet has been monitoring her on an out patient basis, always prompt, cheery, and understanding staff. Costs have been average or less than what we have paid in the past for emergency procedures at different emergency clinics. Very pleased and would recommend to family and friends.
My babies get great care here!this is the place to go when your 10 lb poodle somehow opens a drawer, takes out a bag of Hershey kisses, opens the bag of kisses, and then unwraps and eats half the bag of kisses, while somehow not eating any of the wrapper and finishing all the chocolate.this also is the place to go when you arent sure (but you kind of are sure) which of your two poodles did such a deed, so then the both of them have to have their stomachs pumped.
I am still devastated over the loss of my 7yo pup. I brought him in due to loss of appetite, and he had just started vomiting and urinating blood less than an hour before bringing him in. They would not let me wait with him due to covid and it was a couple hours before I got a call that they looked at him. I asked them to run a full blood workup and they did the lesser option, which the vet later apologized for, but then put him back in the cage for another couple hours where he had a stroke and went into liver failure and I had to put him down. He was there for over 8 hours and they never ran the full blood workup that I asked for. If it was an infection, perhaps more expedited treatment for a severely sick pup would have resulted in antibiotics to bring his fever down, or maybe if they let me be with him he wouldnt have been left unconscious in a crate for who knows how long. Angry and upset doesnt even begin to describe my feelings. I will never bring another pet here again.Oh yeah, on top of losing my best friend, I have a bill for almost $2,000 that Im very reluctant to pay for this horrible treatment.
I am very grateful my pup was able to be seen here today. His normal vet was fully booked and Dobby was suddenly having trouble walking. The staff was accommodating, even with the Covid restrictions. They were upfront about wait times, costs, and made me feel comfortable asking multiple questions. Luckily Dobby is home resting after a great visit to this hospital.Thank you!
First I must say, we had to wait almost all day for our puppo to be looked at....which is 100% reasonable and fine because we didn’t have an appointment and it’s basically an emergency room. But we have now used Mass Vet Referral hospital for multiple surgeries and urgent visits for our two dogs. They have always been accurate, respectful, honest and taken great care of our pups. They are costly within reason, but again it’s a hospital open 24/7 so I think that’s fair. This is our top choice Animal Hospital!
I’ve had good experiences with the specialists there, however, the ER is horrible. My 10 yr old bulldog was in the ER today with, what I knew before taking her there was pneumonia. The vet kept trying to “ sell” me on extra tests that were not necessary. In addition, they play the “ tug at your heartstrings” game trying to guilt you into consenting to them. Now with COVID, you have no direct communication with the staff or your pet. You’re at their mercy by phone and texts.Gone is the patient care. The Ethos corporation is all about the money.
I wish I had read the other 1 star reviews here. At 3:45 today, I took my cat in because he was experiencing breathing problems. My vet said to take him there ASAP. It took 6 HOURS to get my cat back after waiting all that time in the parking lot, in my car! . All he got a routine exam, vet consultation, X-rays, another vet consult, and I was supposed to get liquid steroids to take home with me. When I got my cat back, no steroids were supplied. I asked where are they? The tech ran back in and said “oh the compounding pharmacy is closed. You have to come back tomorrow.”This place is so awful. They could have suggested that I go home and they will call. I only live a half hour away; I wasted 6 hours for what my regular vet could have done in less than an hour.To the owner of this place, please do not give me any of the rhetoric that you replied to the other unhappy patients’ parents about being busier than normal, your staff care deeply...how you are doing your best in the COVID crisis. ... it’s all blah blah blah to me. I know the scripted words because I had been taught to say them to my unhappy customers when I was working. If your staff are overwhelmed, for god’s sake, hire more staff. With all the talk of joblessness, I’m sure there are vets and vet techs out there looking for work! Have better communication with pet parents; I could have gone home instead of sitting in my car for 6 hours. For what my cat needed, 2 hours max would have been sufficient time. You, as an owner, need to make some major improvements, here. I have read where some pets have died while waiting for care here. I will never come back except to pick up my cat’s script tomorrow.I have been in the customer service industry for over 40 years, these past 20 years at a 4 star Boston hotel so I know what good customer service is. If could have given your “emergency “ hospital ZERO STARS, I would have given It NONE!This was a terrible, terrible experience that I would never wish for anyone else to have.
Horrible curbside service. Took over an hour to get my dog back after we had a pick up time and checked in. Medicines given in the bag but no info on paperwork. No info whatsoever what they did for medications while my dog was there until an email over and hour later that I had to disifere and my dog has a very scheduled medicine time. Hopefully the doctor will call when they are back on shift but for now its a guess cause even the dose on a pill bottle was different then what the paperwork said. Huge mess and treat pets like numbers and mine is like my child! Do not reccomend and will never bring my dog back to have them overdose him and have to reverse it. Sickening!
Brought my almost 10 yr old girl dog there on a very busy evening after spending half my day waiting in my car at a different ED close my house. I was initially hesitant to drive the hour to Mass vet as I wasn’t sure if would make a difference since we anticipated a grim prognosis. I’m so glad we did! The entire staff there is amazing! Compassionate, professional and transparent. They took the time to listen as well as clearly explaining the treatment plan, procedures, and potential costs moving forward. Their communication was top notch and they kept me updated throughout my girls overnight stay. She ended up being followed by Oncology and Dr Kaye was so thorough, clear and informative! I just wish I would’ve/ could’ve made the trip there first!
I don’t ever take the time to write reviews, but felt I needed to after my experience at Mass Vet today. My cat Lily has a few medical issues and unfortunately I lost some trust with my regular vet. I brought her to Dr. Palladio to evaluate her, and this man was absolutely wonderful to me and Lily. He did a thorough assessment, necessary testing, and took the time to explain things to me in detail (calling multiple times). He was compassionate, thorough, and just all around wonderful. At the end he told me that we were a team and this meant the word to me. I highly recommend Mass Vet, and especially Dr. Kenneth Palladino. He treated this crazy cat lady with respect and Lily like she was his own. I’ll forever be grateful.
I would never recommend this hospital. I showed up with my Chinchilla who was lethargic in my sons arms, labored breathing, and passing away. When we went to check in the nurse said they only see cats and dogs and for us to step to the side. It was pouring rain, we had taken an Uber to get there and no one would help us. As we stood in the rain my son asked if we could at least stand in the hall, at which point we were told to stand in the corner out of the way of the emergencies coming in. Not one nurse looked our way to even ask what was going on. Patients pulling up with their pets were asking us if we needed anything. I had never felt so helpless. We were pushed to the side like trash on the street. After speaking with the practice manager who was very kind, she stated that our little girl should have been seen and helped. I have never met such I humane people as I did that night. To walk by us as my pet is dying in my sons arms. My little girl did end up passing away that night after the Angell West Hospital took exemplary care of her. If you have any other pet besides a cat or a dog don’t bother going to this hospital you will end up the same way we did.
Context: Brought my 11 year old French Bulldog through the ER last night for what I suspected was an infection in her ear from a recent surgery. She has a history of seizures that we have been managing with our Vet for over 5 years, but when she is in distress, she tends to have them regardless of medications. I explained that she had been showing signs that her ear was bothering her and that she had a cluster of seizures and was panting a lot. Suggested there might be an infection and that I thought she may be in pain, which could be causing her episodes...based on 5+ years of experience with her condition.First call -Them: We can admit her and perform many diagnostic tests for her seizures. Cost; $2,000-$6,000+Me: I am not comfortable with admitting and testing for seizures...What about her ear and the infection?Them: I will have neurology call you later today.Second call -Neurologist: We can admit her and perform many diagnostic tests for her seizures. Cost - $2,000-$6,000+Me: I am not comfortable with admitting and testing for seizures...What about her ear and the infection?Neurologist: Did a check of her face and felt some swelling, do not believe she is in pain.Me: Please treat her for an infection; you can run any test that would identify whether or not she has infection and how to treat it.Neurologist: Said they would put her on antibioticsNo further calls from medical professional...Discharge Instructions arrive via email - Little mention of the infection beyond that she received a prescription for antibiotics...Content was otherwise about managing seizures and that tests are needed.Admin Call for pick up...Pick Up -Bully: The side of her head was grossly swollen. (It was heart-wrenching) Me: She is in worse shape than when I brought her to the ER. Why is her face so swollen...no one mentioned this to me.Tech: Hmmm...not sure, I hadnt noticed it until right now. I will take her back in and ask the doctor...Tech returns several minutes later...Tech: We did in fact know about the swelling, its because she has an infection we gave her antibiotics and pain meds in the bag.Me: Ok great!Get home -Bully: I am in painMe: Let me grab those meds...there are no pain medsBully: *Seizure* and back to where we started before taking her to the ER.I took a video of the seizure and sent a message to the sender of my discharge notes letting them know that I needed some additional help. There was no response until this afternoon when a tech emailed and informed me that if Bully needed to be treated for an infection that I would need to bring her to the ER because, as they carefully explained, neurology would not treat an infection. I reminded the tech that I had indeed brought her to the ER just the day previous and that no one listened to me about the infection. Instead neurology treated her without regard to my reason for bringing her. The young professional then took the time to explain to me how specialties and departments work and assured me that the ER was the best place to take her for an infection....It was really quite easy to get pain meds for my poor bulldog once normal business hours hit. The point is, I was willing to bring her in to the ER at 3am because she needed help with this infection. What I received instead is the feeling that as soon as it was obvious I was not going to shell out $6k, my bulldog was stuffed in a crate and not considered again until I came to get her.Be warned and be suspicious that at Mass Veterinary Referral Hospital, cost may outweigh benefit by design.
I am so incredibly disappointed with every single interaction I have had with this hospital over the last 7 days. The lack of communication between staff is so bad that I wouldnt ever trust that my dog is safe there again .Im not going to write up every single interaction that resulted in this feeling but a few moments to highlight are: I checked in and waited for 30 minutes for my dog to be brought out to me, only to have someone call me telling me i was late picking up my dog and asking me when I would arrive. It took me talking to 4 different people, all telling me they were sending over my final invoice right now, only to finally have the 5th person send it over. And possibly the worst part was that no one went over our discharge instructions with me. Everyone I spoke with told me this next person will go over them with you, and no one did. I finally had to call late at night asking PLEASE PLEASE could someone go over them with me!Sadly, now my dog has busted open his wound and I cant get ahold of them to see next steps!
Brought my dog there due to LYMPNONA to start. had a relationship with many on staff for a year and 1 1/2.They are terriffic
The staff is tremendous. When your pet is in need, they will do their best. Everyone was so kind and compassionate as well as professional. They were very flexible about us wanting to care for our elderly cat at home since we knew the stress of hospitalization might be too much for her when she was very ill. They did everything they could to help us take our baby home while still receiving top-notch care. I highly recommend them.
Worst care I have ever received. Incredible miscommunication, wouldn’t recommend this hospital to anyone. For example- after I paid they took 2 hours to find a tech to bring my dog out but had plenty of time to bring in the dominos pizza delivery service.
AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!! I brought my 6 month old kitten here to have his eye looked at. They are not allowing anyone into the building so we waited in the car for 2 HOURS for them just to take him in. Then they told us it would be hours before he was discharged. We got a call about 40 minutes later that he would be ready to go in about 30-45 minutes. I have now been sitting in my car for an hour and a half and they still have not brought him out. DO NOT GO HERE!!!!
We brought our cat to see Dr. Cronin for an inoperable cancer. The entire staff at Mass Vet was compassionate, very friendly, and talked us through various options. It was a relief to get high-quality care that wasnt going to bankrupt us, and I am so grateful for everything Dr. Cronin and the techs have done for our fur baby.
We were referred to MVRH by our veterinarian for our 15 year old Pomeranian Heidi. She was not eating and her bloodwork was concerning. We were very fortunate that they had a cancellation and were able to see Heidi today. We took the one and half hour drive to be greeted on the phone with a friendly and professional voice. The tech Katie came and got Heidi after asking questions about her condition. Heidi was seen by Dr. Rachel Cooper. After Heidi’s examination and abdominal ultrasound she called and explained in detail Heidi’s condition. Further bloodwork was taken to further diagnose Heidi. We were there for 12:00 and done by 2:00. MVRH tech Katie and Dr Cooper were knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, professional, and did not rush to explain Heidi’s medical condition or answer any of our questions. We highly recommend MVRH for emergencies or appointments with specialists. Heidi wants to thank you for the care she received. Moms, Mary and Deb would like to thank you for putting us more at ease and explaining Heidi’s complicated medical condition.Sincerely,Mary, Deb, and Heidi
Received very poor communication and misinformation from the start. Brought my 14 year old dog in on August 6th for what appeared to be arthritis. When I made the appointment by phone, I asked if we could see Doctor Pastor briefly before the examination because I wanted to indicate to her exactly where on his body my dog exhibits signs of arthritis before the exam. I hadnt heard back so the day before our visit, I called again and was told that the doctor agreed to come out to the parking lot prior to the exam. Instead a vet tech came out to get my dog and so I asked to wait for Dr. Pastor to come out as she had agreed. When she did come out, she was clearly irked saying that she was very busy with surgeries. The exam itself was extremely overpriced, especially for what what was done (or not done) by the doctor and the time she spent with my dog. No real diagnosis was given, except that my dog could have arthritis or a soft tissue injury. Was told it could require an x-ray or ultrasound, even though it was evident that it is arthritis. The doctor said that blood tests for kidney and liver function were necessary in order to prescribe the arthritis medication. I agreed to those tests but instead I was charged $203.42 for a full chemistry scan of blood tests on my perfectly healthy (other than arthritic) dog. They then sold me a very expensive 15-day prescription for Rimadyl. When I ordered the refill on Chewy.com to save some money, the Doctor did not respond to repeated requests from Chewy.com for the approval needed until 6 days after it was needed during which time my dog suffered without the relief that the medication provided.I brought my dog to a local veterinary clinic on August 28th to try to get an accurate diagnosis and Rimadyl for him. The doctor and staff there were excellent, caring, and thorough. I was provided with a detailed assessment of exactly how the doctor physically examined my dog and and what she found. We immediately received a diagnosis of arthritis and paid for a Rimadyl prescription at far less of a cost than the Mass Vet Referral Hospital charged. I could go on, but all in all an awful experience, would never recommend this veterinary hospital to anyone. It seemed their only interest is in treating pet patients that require surgery.I spoke with a manager on August 29th, to talk about adjusting my $480 bill in consideration of the unnecessary additional blood tests, incomplete exam, the prescription refill issue, and the fact that I had to go to and pay a different veterinary clinic for an accurate diagnosis and his medication refill. The manager Rebecca responded that she didnt feel comfortable adjusting my bill I didnt expect and wish I had known that this is how Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital operates, and that I had read other similar reviews beforehand. I never would have brought my dog here. I hope this review helps someone else inSusan VieraPosting publiclyLearn more
Brought our pug in for a visit because he was limping and rolling around trying to scratch. They said nothing was wrong with him. They did no tests but did manage to charge us over $200. Got him home and he was worse. We called them back and they asked us to the the video and send it to them. We took a video and sent it to them. They never responded or called us back. Very unreliable.
They were very kind hearted with us and our two cat on different occasion but unfortunately they both had to be pit down.
I took my dog here twice so far and I must say this is an amazing emergency hospital for animals!! I was referred here by my primary vets and I’m so ecstatic to have found mass vets! Very professional, organized and friendly over the phone. Even during the Covid-19 pandemic which are difficult times for everyone, you guys work harder than ever to care for animals and it shows!! I will be taking my dogs here from now on! Thank you mass vets!
While we were out of town one of our dogs fell ill. After going to 2 other ER vets we brought her here. From the time we dropped her off the evening nurse was quick to develop a plan for her, was in contact with us and offered possible options for treatment in the future. When Dr Lynn took over in the am he had to give the unfortunate news about her situation and remained calm and professional while we asked multiple hard questions which would decide her future. The staff was calm and professional with us when we arrived to see our girl in her final moments. It was not an easy time for us but with the understanding and care it was a little easier. We are very grateful for this.
If you are in the state of Massachusetts DO NOT and I cannot stress this enough. DO NOT go to Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn. Zeus went in for stitches on the 28th of February for a laceration on his paw pad. He pulled 2 of the wraps off and had a following re wrap that Sunday. They saw his paw a total of 5 time over the course of 2 weeks. This morning I took him back to get his stitches out and they said his foot looks great and that he just needs to be slow on it for a few days. We took him to the park to take a few pictures and walk around on our way home from the vet. When we started taking pictures we noticed he was biting his dew claw and when we got close enough to see it this is all we saw. Where he has cut his paw pad was NO WHERE close to where his dew claw is. We then rush him back to the vet to find out they have KNOWN about this and still sent him home. When we asked why we’re not informed the lady who came outside said she didn’t know. The smell that is coming off of him was awful. This wound smells like it was there longer than a week. They then refused to tell me who worked with my dog, stitches, re wraps, ect and said she was not allowed to give out that information, ITS MY DOG AND I PAY FOR ALL OF THIS. Said there was nothing that she could do and to soak it in Epson salt. Then continued to tell me that it’s normal for dew paws to fall off and grow back, at that point I told her I was no longer doing business with them and walked away. This woman wouldn’t even take him into a room she made me take the boot off out side to show her. I am so absolutely disgusted with this facility and now have a puppy that hasn’t been able to run around and be normal for two weeks JUST to come home and have to wait until this heals.
They are terrible!! They refused to see my dog without conducting a flu screening on us and we were not even going in or near the building. I had just visited 4 weeks prior with no issues and this checkup was important since my dog is not improving. Also on the first visit they said a pharmacy would call me with prescription info. After 5 days went by, I called this hospital to tell them I never got a call. They looked and saw the request was never actually sent. How is that ensuring my pet is safe and cared for?? I would be terrified if he was there overnight. If you love your pets, dont take them here. There are other options in the area where they treat your pet like their own and put them first!
I had an emergency issue with 7 month old puppy today and was referred to Ma Vet. Their check in process was easy and fairly prompt. The communication with the staff inside was amazing and often always keeping me updated. Dr Ulmer was so amazing! She was sweet, informative and patient with me when I was indecisive about what I wanted to do for my puppy. I dont know what to compare for cost, but I honestly thought the cost would be more. Thankfully all is better with my pup and we were able to bring her home tonight. The check out process was fairly easy and quick also. Thank you to all the staff from check in to check out and everything in between. You made a super stressful day a lot easier for me. Thanks for making sure we got to take Tella home with us!
Very good experience there. One of my house cats went missing overnight and miraculously came back home in the morning, but over next few days strated feeling sick. I called 5 clinics and nobody could take her in right away, everybody was booked for days and weeks ahead. Mass Vet Referral Hospital took her in! We had a bit of a wait (about 4 hrs between coming in and being back home) as hospital had critical emergency and were quite busy in the evening, but the stuff was very warm, caring and nice, and communicated well. Also, hospital has to follow their Covid protocol, so it is understandable that pet parents are not allowed to come inside. Our adventurous kitty ended up having fever and was given antibiotics and pain medicine. Doctor communicated treatment plan clearly and explained our treatment options well and didnt push for unnecessary testing or medications. Two days later and our cat is feeling well, eating, drinking and playing again. I found prices being reasonable and discharge process very easy. I would go there again if needed. Many thanks to doctors and all stuff for taking care of our furry baby!
The best, they save our dog’s life! Forever grateful!
I brought my cat in to get his eyes checked as both of his third eyelids were protruding. The tech came out and tried to look at him in the cage. Told me they retracted despite it being dark out and my cat moving around in the crate. They then sent us home without checking him out. We asked her a few questions regarding the issue. She didn’t know how to answer them at all and followed with a bunch of maybes. Then send us home without being fully checked. We get home and both of his third eyelids are still protruding. I am not happy at all. I get it that you guys are busy. But my poor cat’s eyes still look horrible and we got turned away after driving 40 minutes. I never have had an issue with you guys ever this is a first. To say I am saddened and disappointed is understatement.
Our primary vet referred us here, over places that were closer to home. It was well worth the hour drive. My husband and I are medical professionals; while I know little about veterinary medicine, I have nothing but praise for the teams we dealt with at MVRH, even despite the outcome. We were referred to internal medicine and made an appointment. But when the doc reviewed Rubys chart the next day, she thought we should see neurology. They called to change our appointment, which saved us time and money. I spoke to Derek and Betsy on the phone. They were both very personable and made the stressful process of vet referral very easy. We did not have pet insurance, but MVRH was up front about both necessary and potential costs. Specialized vet care is expensive, but the cost was less than I anticipated for a full workup (same-day MRI) and an 8hr ICU/neuro visit. We even ended up with a refund. At her neuro consult, Ruby had a thorough workup: exam, MRI, spinal tap, labs. Dr. Troxel was optimistic, but honest about her prognosis. He told us what he saw in a way we could understand, said he would follow up when all the results came back, and gave us a plan for the meantime. He even apologized about being on vacation over the weekend, adding that anyone on the team could answer if we called. The next morning, Ruby randomly declined. My husband called MVRH and they recommended she be admitted. She was seen quickly thru the ER and neuro was expecting her. We were informed of the plan for admission, and Dr. Kim was honest about the prognosis. Around 5pm, Dr. Kim called with an update before she left for the day. She told me the ICU vet would be watching Ruby overnight and that we would get another update in the morning. She was very apologetic and explained things well. A few hours later, we got a call from Dr. Stone. She was kind, and slowly explained what had transpired so that we could understand. She was apologetic too. She explained that Ruby had stopped breathing a few times, and that despite their efforts, she was now braindead. I confirmed the DNR, and she offered her condolences. Dr. Stone encouraged us to make whatever decision felt right regarding her after-care (ie viewing her body/cremation), adding theres no judgement here. She apologized again, and told me someone would be in touch regarding cremation, but not to worry about it right away. She was extremely compassionate, which is something you cant fake over the phone.I wouldnt change a thing about the care Ruby received here. The neuro and ICU teams at MVRH were top notch throughout the whole heart-breaking ordeal, and handled it extremely well. Im thankful we chose to make the trek from NH.
Kirara had been experiencing some respiratory issues (coughing, sneezing) when I brought her in on emergency. She is a feline herpes carrier so she sometimes gets flareups but almost never this bad. The new COVID-19 precautions include a dropoff so no humans are in the facility, but Dr. Mense and her team were very responsive in communicating over the phone. Very professional and concise in explaining the issues. Asked permission before performing procedures like xrays which can be a price point for some. They are very courteous over the phone as well when youre calling in from home about questions, etc. Thanks so much to Dr. Mense and staff for a great experience and great treatment. Kirara is on the mend for sure because of you.
BEWARE OF THIS PLACE. Ive honestly have never received such worse care than this place! My family came rushing with our dying cat and this vet made us wait for life-saving surgery until we had the available funds. Not only is this place overpriced, but it lacks the human decency and morality to ACTUALLY care about our pet. Whats even worse is that as my family was trying to find the means to pay an overprice 8000 dollar surgery, they would have people come into our room and harass us every 5 minutes. In fact, whats even worse is the fact that at some point our poor cat couldnt take it any longer. After hours of the clinic refusing to give this cat surgery and work with us, they suggested that we put it down. We refused, but moments later our cat had endured so much pain and sickness that it couldnt persist anymore. So, to their pleasure, we had to put our cat down. After that we got billed approximately 2000 dollars to basically argue with them and later kill our own cat. So, if you really care about the health of your pets, GO ANYWHERE ELSE THAT HAS AN OUNCE OF HUMANITY. This place clearly doesnt! Whats more shocking is the fact that we later got a call from one of the workers in which they tried to coerce us into erasing our post because we were simply wrong. If youre reading this you should really take into account the rating in this page as this place calls former customers and tries to convince them to erase bad reviews.
Brought my moaning cat at the Sunday morning. We were checked in immediately and received all attention, care and professional services by nurses and doctor. They had informed me about every step in processing and requested and received my agreement prior to applying it. Very comfortable waiting area and delicious coffee too
Initially going to this hospital I was skeptical based on the reviews, but we had nowhere else to go and needed to try it to give our dog a chance. I am pleased to say we had an excellent experience at this hospital, and I would like to especially thank Dr.Silver and her neurology team for their phenomenal care of my 8 year old dog. She and her team quickly took my paralyzed dog in for an MRI, then prepared him for surgery to fix his slipped disk immediately after. Their communication was great, and their speedy care for my dog no doubt saved his neurological function and is the reason he is back to normal today. I am so grateful for their knowledge and professional care, and cant thank them enough for helping my dog in a time of great need. The price for the MRI, surgery and hospital stay is quite expensive, but it is specialty care and I feel is justified for their expertise. Thank you Dr. Silver and Mass Vet for making my dog walk again!
I brought my cat in for a wound in her chest... I waited in the car for more than 5 hours. The vet called saying she had taken care of her wound and that she would be released soon, so 2 hours went by and nothing! it took several complains from me for them to finally release my cat. They have no sense of respect for the owners or our pets they are simply the worst.DON’T RECOMMENDP.s avoid this place! your pet will deeply appreciate!
They were awesome and very compassionate.
They killed my cat without trying to fix him. they’re holding my other cat hostage. and they ordered dominos. good workers.update it’s been hours and hours, and my cat is still being held hostage. i keep asking for my cat, but i certainly don’t have him back yet. but hey, they have free water. good workers.
Needed hospital overnight care for the first of three scheduled heartworm injections. Consult with cardiologist, Dr. Sosa, was insightful and reassuring. Communication and care with him and his Team was excellent. Scheduled appointments had hardly any wait time. Pup seems well cared for and not overly agitated by the experience. Meds were ready and packaged upon discharge and I was even given a refund of several hundred dollars from my total bill. Now the real challenge, to keep her on restricted activity until her next appointment. I feel so much better having her receive this specialized care. Thank you, again - until next month.....
Our dog Spike became a patient of Dr. Kholers and we feel lucky enough to say that we believe he saved his life. Spike was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (a cancerous mass growing on his front upper jaw. Dr. Kholer performed a maxellectomy to remove the area of his upper jaw and the margins around the cancerous growth. The surgery was successful and although his nose is droopy now in the aftermath of him missing that area of bone, he is a very happy and healthy 7 year old puppy at heart! Thank you to Dr. Kholer and the kind staff at Mass Vet who are very empathetic, kind and respectful, we appreciated all of your efforts and are so grateful to have many more wonderful years to enjoy with our little guy!
First experience was not so good here a year ago but was there recently to put down my cat and they were beyond amazing at every step and they had decent prices too.
Simply put, they saved my sweet boy Romeo! Very thankful to the veterinarians and techs who reacted swiftly to his emergency and nursed him back to health over the course of several days. They updated me daily with his condition and were always kind, patient and informative about all aspects of his care. The staff that checked me in and out were also very nice and professional and took care of connecting with my pet insurance Trupanion for direct payment at the end of his stay there. Thank you for the work you do!
Excellent care. Staff and doctors are very responsive and kind to my dog and me!
First, I will say that I never write reviews, but felt that I had to for MassVet. This weekend my dog got ahold of my albuterol medicine which caused his heart to race like crazy, along with other symptoms. When I got there I will say, it was packed, but staff informed me when I checked in that there would be a wait given the amount of pets that needed to be seen. They take pets by order of urgency, so I waited my turn, being relieved that they didn’t consider my dog’s condition to be extremely critical! When it was time for them to see my dog, I informed them that he was quite the yappy dog when it came to strangers (he’s a yorkie). They asked if he has ever been muzzled and I said it didn’t work in the past, I recommended transferring him over to them by using a blanket and stated that I had one with me. The vet tech said “let me just try my chances” with a laugh, which immediately reduced my anxiety around the whole thing. My first cause of anxiety was his condition of course, but I’m sure anyone who owns a VOCAL pet knows, my other cause of anxiety was the fact that he just does not stop barking around strangers. The vet tech met me at the front with a blanket and the transfer was smooth, my dog instantly calmed down, I was shocked. The vet tech didn’t seem annoyed at all about the barking, she was understanding and calm, which I think even my dog picked up on!Once he was inside, it took some more time to be updated, which again, I have all the patience in the world, just wanted to know he was safe. Dr. Vicente ended up calling me and updating me in detail what was going on with him, what she suggested, and costs. She was extremely caring and answered all the questions I had. She was also very patient and loving with my very fidgety dog. She strongly recommended having Theo stay over night and was extremely transparent with the price range. The price was definitely on the higher side, but honestly, I was expecting it to be even more. She understood that it was a lot, but reassured me that she in heart felt like it was the best option to have his heart and electrolytes monitored overnight to be safe, so I listened to her advice. She was amazingggg and even updated me later that night on his status. I felt relieved waking up first thing and hearing that he was doing fine. I wish I could have Dr. Vicente as Theo’s regular vet, she was that great!Overall, yes there will be wait. They’re in there saving pets lives, but you will be seen! And if they thought the condition of your pet was a life or death situation, they would take them in, no questions asked. I am extremely thankful for everyone at massvet that got my puppy back to his normal self and calmed his little heart down. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I cant share enough good things about the experience I had here. Yesterday, both of my dogs were having digestive issues and with increased regulations and their normal veterinarian we were unable to get an appointment despite it being considered an emergency. They went above and beyond in treatment, diagnosis, and being fully transparent for the entire 12 hours they were in this hospitals care. I am even considering switching over to this location for normal veterinary appointments. Kudos!
The doctors & all of the staff are so honest and caring, Molly ( 70 lb puppy )has been with with for 10 + years then fell ill, we brought Molly to mvrh, they imeadiatly figured out what was her health problem was, and professionally gave us an honest and heart felt results, my wife Sheri & I were devastated . We are very grateful & we know Molly was in best of care @ mvrh in Woburn, thank you to all the staff ! 10+
Everything about this place is mediocre. I would not bring any member of your fluffy family to this slaughterhouse. They provide terrible care to the animals they treat. The staffers are rude and lack any skill to communicate in any appropriate manner. We truly are experiencing unique times under Covid 19; we have seen grocery store employees, restaurant employees, public health employees shine and organize so that we still experience the very same service we are accustomed too. Woburn emergency Vet Clinic has folded under pressure and cannot service our four-legged friends in need. They need to be closed until further notice until they adapt and organize a proper service which does not include a 4 hour discharge time at the very minimum.
I took my dog Boo to Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital because he was having minor respiratory distress. Our other dog recently came down and got over a case of kennel cough. We were monitoring Boo for the day and noticed his cough getting deeper, and overall distress level rise. He wasn’t eating, he was very lethargic, and he was coughing up white foam more and more frequently.I called ahead at 8:18PM to alert the emergency room I was coming. I filled out a pre-registration form online ahead of time. The clinic was very busy but they spoke to me right away and let me know what the protocol would be. I waiting in my car with my dog, they called him in, took some vitals, then brought him right back to me. The vet called me and gave me a plan of action and prescribed antibiotics. For a emergency room visit of any kind, it was relatively swift, especially for COVID.
My dog was viscously attacked by a larger dog. We were referred here because he had a substantial eye injury and they have an ophthalmologist on staff. They determined his eye needed to be removed and he required numerous xrays and scopes to make sure he didn’t have puncture wounds to his trachea or esophagus. They made sure to explain everything very clearly to me. They were all super knowledgeable and always made sure to call me at least 2x a day w updates, even if they weren’t significant. He’s adjusting well. His chest is still very bruised and swollen. He’s in good spirits tho! It’ll be a long recovery, but I’m thankful he’s alive and home and expected to make a full recovery in a few months. We are to grateful to the knowledgeable staff and their dedication to their profession. 10/10 recommend!
We brought our dog whom seemed very sick, was lethargic, not eating or walking. Overall everything was amazing, PUTTING ASIDE having to deal with Dr. Marisa Stone. She was incredibly arrogant and rude, spoke in a condensing manner, and never truly broke down the actually issue with our dog. We are not medical specialists, and she explained everything to us like we were. Eventually we were unsure about what to go doing forward, and called in one of the vet technicians to better explain which she did a wonderful job doing. Dr.Stone has no patience and its incredibly discouraging as we already were trying to hold it together for our pet.. When we were called for an update during the day Dr. Danielle Thomas was incredible, attentive and caring. She carefully explained everything and answered any questions. She also helped us stay within out budget. All other staff was amazing, from business office to the secretary. Aside from dealing with Dr. Stone, We thank all of the wonderful staffers and team at Mass Vet for helping our dog. Also, to keep in mind, this place can be pricey, 2k-5k if you need the ER. But, its worth it for our pets!!!!
This place is an unmitigated disaster. Having spent 5 hours here it’s clear whatever they’re doing is wrong. From the customer service to the call back to even waiting 1.5 hours to pay. This place is a joke and needs to be shut down. The parking lot is filled with hundreds of people thinking the same thing. Go out of business already.
I cannot say enough good things about how me and my golden retriever pup were treated. Of course I had to wait in the car due to covid so I didnt see first hand but the vet was so kind and helpful on the phone and put my mind at ease. Didnt pressure me I to decions. And helped me feel good about having brought her in. She swallowed a large stick whole. And I was beside myself. Thank you to everyone on the team. I am very pleased either her treatment and she is in tip top condition again! And she got up the stjck!
I was referred to this hospital by sister emergency location to just drop my dog overnight. I dropped him quickly and then waited for more hour for nothing. This place is really not responding in time.
Took my cat in and after 2300.00 dollars for a mild case two nights stay I took my cat home and hand fed him back to health and I spent two hours at the hospital had feeding him before I took him home the next day. I was told they did not force feed them and they would put a feeding tube instead. I took him home the next day and he is in very good health I hand feed him food and water. For what we paid for I would of expect better care. when I got there that night he had dried up wet food on a plastic cover. I have been coming to this place for years and will never come back again. If I left him there they would of put a feeding tube and charged me even more money then what I spent. I called to talk to a manger and never got a call back. The doctor never even call to check on him. They just took there money. I am on the phone now 40min waiting to talk to a manager.
Always been very helpful in a time of need.
If I could give a zero I would! I don’t recommend working here, I was offered an offer letter and then they took my employment away. I understand they had protocols about the references but they are suppose to clear that first before offering employment.
Let me start by saying that all the staff were kind and competent and this is not a comment on any of them as individuals. However, taking our sick pup here on Saturday was bottom line the worst possible experience. We waited for over 2 hours for our baby to get in and were told that the doc would be evaluating him within 10 minutes of being admitted. 3 hours later.. we hadn’t heard one word about what was going on. When I finally got a call, the doc explained that he had no information for me on what was causing my pups condition but would want to get him on fluids and do an xray - though that would take several more hours. I was horrified that my dog had not received any fluids yet since he was already very dehydrated when we got there and he had been there for 7 hours. So after an agonizing day, I asked that my pup be discharged because they had done absolutely nothing for him other than finally administer some fluids after a 7 hour wait. Absolutely shocking lack of communication and care for my pup. Unless your dog is on death’s doorstep, go somewhere else.
They are veryy helpful and friendly. They keep in close contact when my animal was hospitalized
I called before coming to make sure there was an ophthalmologist on staff and if i had made the trip to the er if my dog would be able to see the ophthalmologist, i was told yes there was one and if i made the er before 3 pm that my dog would be able to see the ophthalmologist. I then drove over an hour to this establishment for these services, when i arrived i had to wait a bit like expected, no big deal, the tech came and got my dog i then explained that i was told hed be able to see the ophthalmologist and she said that he would be able to be seen by the ophthalmologist. They took my dog at 2:20 pm and called me at 3:44 asking what was happening and to get symptoms again and saying they were going to examine, i also said i came for the ophthalmologist i want him to see the ophthalmologist. They called me at almost 6 telling me he couldnt see the ophthalmologist and that his eye was anterior uveitis and what they could do etc. Everything but the services i requested and was told i would receive. Now i had an appointment for the following day at a primary vet which i had told them about to begin with, which i only canceled and decided i come here solely for an ophthalmologist!!! Which i did not get.Mind you i have an extremely anxious fearful scared dog.. almost 7 hours later and i still dont have my dog back...
We took our dog to this hospital yesterday (6/12/20) at the referral of our primary vet. Our dog had been bitten in the leg by another dog so we wanted her to be seen as soon possible. When we got there, someone came out to greet us for emergency services and they told us they would call us when ready. It took an hour and a half to be called (for emergency services mind you ) while we just had to sit in the parking lot. When they finally called us to bring her in, we met a technician at the door to drop off our dog. And then we did not hear a thing for hours - no update, nothing. After waiting 2 hours we called the number and got placed on hold for a half hour. When we finally spoke to someone they were not able to give us any update other than that our dog has her vitals taken and she would be seen by the doctor “soon”. Then another hour went by so we called again and again after being on hold no one could give us an update. Finally after waiting about 3 hours in the parking lot, the vet called and told us what she had done to our dog. We had been told from outset they would call before doing anything and give us a run down of costs. That did not happen. When I asked the vet if our dog has been at least given water in the time she was locked up in there, the vet responded “no I don’t think so - the animals don’t usually like drinking water here”. I asked her how long she would still need to be at hospital and again, no straight answer. The vet ended up rushing me off the phone. Another 2 hours went by and after a few more calls of trying to get information, they let us know we can pay (the person we spoke to couldn’t even give us an itemized list over the phone) and told us our dog would be in the que for discharge, which took another half hour. From start to finding, we waited for 6 (SIX) hours. I get that your staff was busy and I was understanding of the fact that different protocols are in place right now during the pandemic. But to not communicate with us AT ALL. And when we called to be put on hold and get no straight answers or even an apology for how long we’ve waited? That is completely unacceptable. Also, if they were that so far behind, why wasn’t any one transparent with us that was the case ? We had receptionists tell us we would get updates “shortly” or “10-15 min” and would hear absolutelt nothing. And honestly if the doctor was not ready to see our dog and her vitals were determined to be stable/not in serious condition, she should have been able to stay with us rather than locked in a cage with no water. The front desk woman working late afternoon shift was rude and told me at one point she couldn’t give me an update because “she had 3 other updates to get” . There were quite a few people in parking lot angry and waiting for an update. I also witnessed a woman trying to tell your front desk woman that her dog was having a stroke and they had been waiting in parking lot for an hour. The check-in person told this clearly distressed woman that if she wants they can have their dog monitored. Why wasn’t that dog already being monitored ? This woman and her dog ended up leaving, and rightfully so. We will never bring our dog to your organization again. Your terrible customer service, disorganization, lack of communication, from start to finish was unacceptable and made us worry for 6 hours about what we had given our dog over to. We will also be calling our primary vet and letting them know they should stop referring patients to your location.
They have a very skilled and caring staff. It is a busy emergency veterinarian hospital. All calls go to a call center and calling for updates on your pet can be difficult at times. The staff is wonderful.
My dog DANIKA ripped her dew claw last might so I brought her to Mass Ref hospital this morning and they took her in and took care of her promptly and gave her a Cone of Shame for a few days. Thank you so much for taking care of our girl🐶❤️Kris and John Gerhartz Wilmington MA
Need I say more. My 10 week old puppy has been here for51/2 hours and I was told he was being readied for discharge an hour and a half ago. Im waiting to see if the price we were told 2 hours ago is going to be the same when we get him.I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. Maybe some regulatory agency needs to come down here and see whats going on.
We took our samoyed, Ivan, to Dr. Riggs for focal seizures. Dr. Riggs and all staff were supportive, helpful, and knowledgeable. If he needs anything further, I know where well be taking him!
Do not bring your animals to this vet. I took my dog Mac to this vet on May 19th because my normal vet was closed. My poor dog was vomiting and they did x-rays and said that he had blockages in his intestines. And told me in order to save him I had to come up with $5500. I raised the money and approved he surgery they said the surgery went great and they feed him regular dry dog food right after his surgery. I am no vet but having surgery on your intestines and then being feed dry dog food 2 hours after a major suregy does not seem right to me. They sent my boy home on Sunday and gave me pain meds and told me to come back in 14 days to have the staples removed. No follow up visit to see how he was doing. I had to call the vet several times during the week to send them pictures of the incision PICTURES! They told me it looks fine continue to do what I was doing. I woke up Friday morning the 25th of May to find him bleeding from his staples I rushed him into the vet asap when I got there they told me it was just a pocket of fluid behind the staples this vet was so cold and had no bedside manner at all they took mac out back and asked me to leave him and go to work. This was 6am I went to work and still heard nothing until 11am because I called and the receptionist told me that the vet was going to call me back an hour later I get a call from the vet stating the surgical site inside his body broke down. And he will need more surgery which would be another $6500. I left work to go to the vets office when I got there Dr Klaus Stated that his was septic and that his intestines had broke down and his intestinal fluids were draining into his stomach and abdomin. Then she says well you have a care credit see what you have left and we can go from there. The vet said there is a 50% chance this surgery will work but then he would need to stay at the hospital for 2 weeks after surgery and this would be additional cost not included in the $6500 they quoted. In the end we had to put Mac down because he was not going to make it regardless. When we made the decision to put him down the vet said it’s your decision this vet was very cold and made myself and my friend feel horrible saying he was too young to put down. When they finally brought him into the room he was so medicated that he could bearly stand they walked in left him leaning against the couch and left the room. I had to pick him up and carry him into the middle of the room and lay him on the freezing floor no blanket nothing. Then the vet finally came back in and gave him he shot to put him to sleep when he finally passed nothing but blood came out of his rectum. When my mother said this the vet was just very cold heart and said yea that happens and she threw a bunch of tissues on it and left the room. They charged us an additional $800 and left me sitting in the room with my dog no one came back in to take him away this place is horrible the only thing they care about is money and that is it they have no care for your animals just their paychecks stay away from this place at all cost.
I just came home from unexpectedly putting my 16 y/o cat down. Of course I am devastated, but I wanted to write a review commending this practice—from their responsiveness when I called at almost 11pm to their kindness when I was a total mess trying to say goodbye to Smudge, they were a class act. I am not from Massachusetts and am only here for a travel nursing assignment. Being away from our home vet and anything familiar made this even more difficult, but my cat passed peacefully in my arms as, in spite of the COVID situation, I was allowed to be with her. Thank you so much to the reassuring veterinarian (whose name I cannot remember—I’m so sorry), and all of the staff. This could’ve gone a lot of ways, and I was afraid to bring her in because I was afraid of the experience we’d have but, for what it had to be, it couldn’t have been better. Thank you. 💜
I had to bring my dog to the emergency room. We were instantly greeted by the nicest person in the entire world who made it his mission to make sure my dog and I were both comfortable. My dog who is generally shy around men, took to him immediately especially when he offered her a treat. We were put in a room right away, and had to wait minimal time before a vet tech came in. A short while later, the vet came in and diagnosed my dog, prescribed some medication and we were out the door in under 2 hours with a bill for a third of what I feel like we should have paid. They checked in with me a day or two later on my dogs progress. All in all, great experience here despite the circumstances.
Entire staff were excellent, handled a very difficult situation for us in such a compassionate, professional manner. Extra thanks to Dr. Kim Smith for your expertise, compassion and time in the midst of what was clearly a busy and hectic day for you all! Highly recommend this hospital.
