I volunteered for a year at the Good Shepherd Center night shelter a few years ago. I enjoyed it so much! The staff were wonderful the guests were wonderful. I had an awesome experience. I would recommend volunteering at the Good Shepherd to anyone who would like to work with homeless individuals and families.

Unprofessional staff. Absolutely no compassion for the homeless community whatever. They DO NOT help people there and are only out for themselves.Youre better off on the street. The social workers there are obviously untrained and also not helpful to the guests hardly at all.I see the male eating more than helping anyone. They also feel the need to punish the guests often. By taking clothes or priveledg s away . Not sure why. I think its a way of feeling control. Which is pathetic. Again, if you dont love what you do. You shouldnt be in that environment.

They except you as you are, as long as you can maintain. They promote cleanliness, to avoid the spread of diseases. You can switch into fresh clothes every not. Truly a wonderful system. May God continue to bless them.

Let me state that I currently stay here . I’ve lived in other homeless shelters and this one is by far the worse. Almost every rule is meant too dehumanize us and hinder any type of progress . They take your cell phones around 8 o clock, don’t let you do laundry (instead using an exchange system where you give your own personal dirty clothing in exchange for other clothing), don’t let us bring our own water or foods in, and the staff is beyond rude and incompetent. If you have any pride and self-respect, only use this shelter as an absolute last resort.

During a very tough time considering the Covid-19 pandemic I had the very good fortune of having the help of The Good Sheppard Shelter right here in Wilmington. Having pnuemonia at this trying moment I found this organization instumental in overcoming my illness. Not only did they make sure I had safe housing by getting me a motel room, they also made sure there was plenty of foods to eat. Not having the financial resources to obtain these on my own, The Good Sheppard, as well as the Eastersesls Organization, has helped me and many others maintain a clean, safe environment while staying, also clean and sober from drugs and alcohol. I feel tremendously indebted to The Good Sheppard for all of its help and wanted to let the Wilmingto Community know just how essential this organization is and want all of you to know THEY ARE REALLY DOING SOMETHING TO SAVE LIVES AND INSURE. THAT PEOPLE, HOMELESS OR NOT, ARE STAYING SAFE DURING THIS COVID-19 PANDEMIC!Humbly, David Peck

While I was in North Carolina and on the streets homeless these good people took me in, was going to buy me my own personal identification card and ACTUALLY DO THE RIGHT THING AND CARE ABOUT SOMEONE WHILE THEYRE DOWN. Im thinking about moving back up to North Carolina just because of the fact that you have a good chance of making something better out of your life without having to play the satanic games that you must be a part of here where Im at now to even get a good job.... a bunch of wolves in sheeps clothing with smiling faces is what they are where Im at now

Good Shepherd is a wonderful resource to the Wilmington community. They provide a safe and nurturing place for families and individuals to stay while they take the necessary proactive steps to get back into self sustenance and housing. They provide hot, nutritious meals to the community every day. Great, genuinely concerned staff and amazing volunteers, all of whom believe in their guests and are committed to their mission.

I recently volunteered in their Second Helpings Station. I was amazed how the community consistently supports this center. It is a well-oiled machine from administration to facility operation to volunteer support. They serve hot, DELICIOUS meals to anyone hungry in the community. They have clean dormitories, and strict rules are in place to ensure health, respect and dignity for guests, administration and volunteers. The Director, Katrina, has her heart in her job. This center not only provides a safe and comfortable haven for the homeless, but their mission is to permanently end homelessness for their guests (162 individuals housed last year). I am proud to offer my volunteer services to this organization. Every city should hope to have a facility like this for their homeless citizens.

Good Shepherd Center remains a constant source of identifying permanent safe and affordable housing for homeless men, women, and children in the region. I am proud to say that I have never been in a community that is this focused on literally ending homelessness. Keep up the good work Wilmington!

I picked up a gentleman at NHRMC who was homeless and had been in the hospital for several days after being beaten on the street. When I saw him, he had a cast on and several stitches. He said he had lost his official identification in the melee and that no homeless shelter would take him in...except Good Shepherd. I applaud Good Shepherd for stepping up and helping those truly in need. This gentleman could not have stayed on the street in his condition. In talking with him, he was hopeful because of the promise provided by the people at Good Shepherd. Truly inspiring!

VERY hard to get in touch with anyone there. Called and left a message, but no one called me back. This may be because I said we had several coats/jackets to bring. Some are brand new. From their website I learned, however, that they dont need coats. Called again today, no one answered phone, not even a machine! Glad I thought to look at the website further or wed have brought over several packages of things only to be turned away. But if I were bringing garlic salt, Id have been welcomed with open arms.Im sure this is a needed service in our community. I wish it werent. Since you have very successful campaigns for donated things, Id say you were successful.

I worked at Good Shepherd for almost 4 years. Ive seen wonderful things but mainly irrational and vindictive use of force from Programs Manager and Executive Director. Ive seen long term staff fired to save money, staff who has called the board in for a formal complaint have been fired afterwards, staff has been denied the right to look into their employee file, etc. The mission is great but is not properly carried out by those in charge.

I am currently at The Good Shepherd. At a homeless shelter, STAFF HOLDS ALL THE CARDS. Regardless of whatever problem may arise between resident & resident or resident & staff, a person should be able to speak there mind without fear of being kicked into the streets, as long as what you say is done in a respectful manner.TO ME, I feel that I am only allowed to go SO FAR to defend myself. Were I to defend myself, and start to get the better of the debate (i.e. the facts support MY position)...youd rarely hear from the current staff You know, youre right. I didnt realize such-and-such. THEY SURE WOULDNT LIKE BEING WRONG.Being forced to leave the shelter should be a LAST RESORT, and rarely used (if ever). Being a physical threat to others, using or dealing drugs, being UNRULY AND UNREASONABLE....this can and should all be dealt with by local law enforcement. If you are not capable of building basic fundamental relationships, perhaps another line of work would suit you better.A staff member who cant stand a resident who doesnt tow the line is quite frankly in the wrong business, and CERTAINLY shouldnt have the power to boot somebody out over 1st time minor infractions. There should be a RESIDENT ADVOCATE for appeals....not staff. We entered a shelter; we didnt join the Marines. Involuntarily committed MENTAL PATIENTS in N.C. have more rights than most shelter residents.FOR THE RECORD, I HAVE NOT HAD A SINGLE RUN IN WITH STAFF.....Im just a bit worried if I do.............

I came here for lunch and then decided to stay at the overnight shelter. Worst experience ever. Staff is rude and they say they care abiut you but they do not. They take your phone from you at check in. If you want a good bed you have to be there by 430 latest 6. Best thing is the food. They tell you when you can smoke 3 smoking breaks. They check your bags everytime you enter. You can leave your bags there but have to be back by 245 to put them in the hall. Its like a prison. Its horrible. And they can kick you out for any reason. I got kicked out for apparently smoking in the womens restroom some girl said. Ok take some girls word for it. Terrible shelter just go for lunch at 11. Go to salvation army its way better.

They started off nice till they check your background then we was treated like animals from the slavery days. They dont like black people and all cause something that we was arrested for that was later cleared of. It just havent gotten off the record yet but have been since then. They Judge you based on that. After we proved we never been in trouble dont drink nor smoke and never done drugs. we was still judge cause of the lady not wanting us there cause of what my Husband was locked up for. After we proving to her he was cleared of the charges and he didnt do the crime she still went by that. I do have a video of that day it happen cause I was so shocked how we was being treated after years of donating money and clothes there. I will no longer fund it nor send anything there. I will be contacting the owner to show them how their business is being ran and show other business who donates to them how they treating people there. I was able to get confession from people about their experience there and its not good. I use to thought it was a great place but after going to see for myself I was shocked. Im am sorry for all who was treated badly there. I will try to see what I can do to change that. Cause we should be helping people not putting them down or not help them due to race or a rumor or their past cause if we wasnt there nor know what happened how do we know if the crime was really done. They could had been innocence We are not to judge. Just cause you are on a sex offender list doesnt always mean you rape someone sometimes they put people on that list due to losing there kids to DSS and it was agreement you make with them as a win win situation. I know this from working with them. Stop judging till you know the whole story or do your own research. I know they dont care too much cause we was giving rotten food and even food that went bad. I saw how they gave certain people stuff fresh and ones they didnt like bad food gone bad. Like I said I video all of it. I was homeless from Oct till DEC as a project to see what people say is true and I found out its true and we did meet some kind people but as for this place it was the worst of all the shelters we went to. All my fundings will go to other shelters for now on. I will pray for all of you and this place that someone will have a heart to change these people. God Bless you all.
