Great way to spend an afternoon! We did the tour where they drop you off a few lakes up and you paddle back to the rental shop. It was fun reading the maps, occasionally felt lost-but in a good way, and got some much needed sun.
Took the Packrafting 2 class with Jim and Mary and had a great time! Learned a whole lot while having fun. I feel much more prepared to go paddle rivers on my own and how to deal with it when things go wrong. Thanks for a great weekend!
Our instructor was super friendly and we went out on the river the same day we signed up for our class. We did white water kayaking and what an experience that was.
My wife and I took the kayaking 101 class and it was a great experience. We learned a lot of good basic techniques. Randy made sure we all learned those basic techniques and it was a lot of fun.
Rented two paddle boards, spent a great hour with son. Nice boards, Jim was very helpful.
I booked a trip 2 months in advance and 10 days before my trip I got an email from Jim canceling it saying they have no instructor and no boats. Im not sure how this happens with a trip planned so far in advanced.I wont give them a second chance.
I am late in posting this, but I wanted others that are considering the trip to know that this will most likely be the BEST thing you do in Alaska. The Big Ice Trip is day that can be tailored to your individual needs. We wanted to go with a small group and get as close to the glaciers as we could be while being guided by an experienced and knowledgeable guide. We are experienced kayakers, but never in these areas. I booked for three of us. We were guaranteed to go, and he said that if a few others wanted to join the group he would add them to our trip and it would reduce our cost. We scheduled the trip, and a few weeks before our flying to Anchorage they called to confirm. They also called the hotel the day before to confirm meeting time and location. They arrived at our Anchorage hotel with a Van towing the kayaks. We stopped and picked up one more for our group and a stop to select our sack lunches. As we drove toward Whittier we were given a great guided narration of the area. Careful planning put us at the tunnel at the correct time. We were thru the tunnel and pulled up to the dock to load the kayaks on the water taxi. We were able to help with this transfer to speed up the trip and get us to the kayak area faster. The taxi took us out to a beautiful area we off loaded on to the shore. Here we received some safety instructions all the gear to keep us safe and dry. (We are from Arizona and I get cold very easily). At no time during the trip was I wet or cold. We kayaked at a very reasonable pace and reached the first glacier. It was absolutely amazing. We found a great shoreline to use as our picnic spot, a very short walk to a stunning waterfall. After eating our lunches and a short rest, we got back in the Kayaks and paddled amazingly close to the glacier. At no time did the Mom in me ever worry about safety. This group knows what they are doing. We then head out to our second glacier. During this time we truly experienced the Big Ice. Giant floating bergs that we often larger than a small car. Our group consisted of myself, a 50 year old who is in ok shape, my husband who is also in fair shape, but is Blind, and our 20 something daughter who is in very good shape. We were joined by a very nice teacher from Idaho who was a very experienced kayaker. If I could only do one thing during my next trip to Alaska, it would be the Big Ice trip with the Kayak Center.
Friendly staff and reasonably-priced equipment.
They have paddle boards available by the hour and by the day, place is also in town,no need for a long trips
