Rock Creek Park Horse Center is an oasis within the city. Deep in Rock Creek Park is a property full of stables and fields. There are 57 horses in the stable. Half are private, but the other half are used for the public. They offer riding lessons and on weekends they have pony rides for kids as young as 2.5 years old. If youre hiking by, you can enter the public stables to see the horses and ponies. You cant pet the horses, but the staff are so friendly and will give you the story of each horse. Once you see the horses, I recommend hiking through Rock Creek Park and visit the nearby Capitol Stones.
It was very fun and interesting and my horse September was nice and calm
The closest Ive been to a real live horse! As opposed to the carousel from back when (you can tell Im old) also, not counting the horse on duty at the national mall. They were so knowledgeable about each horse, all the way to the point of if they are friendly or if they bite. Its not too far out so recommending this for kids outing or a very different kind of lunch date.
I didnt get the name of the older gentleman with the beard, but he made our visit very memorable! He took his time in making sure we were enjoying ourselves, and he was extremely patient with our 2 kids (ages 11 & 6). Also, after our pony ride, Lindsey came over and gave us an impressive tour of the barn, so we could meet all of the horses! What a wonderful place! We surely will be coming back!!
I was recently looking for trail rides on a whim of curiosity, and I was so surprised to find this absolute gem in the district. It’s been years since I last rode, but I felt comfortable with a trail ride. The staff were great, the horse was a good gal, it was a lovely ride, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this experience.*book well in advance- their calendar gets filled up fast*
The Rock Creek Horse Center is a beautiful reminder of a past era, comfortable and relaxed. The staff is welcoming and friendly. The surrounding park is a wonderful large natural oasis in a large urban setting.
We regularly take the kids to visit the horse stables. They love to see the horses and watch if someone is out riding. There could be more activities available for kids, however people are open and welcoming to us as we wander around and ask questions. Theres always a part of me that feels like Im intruding despite the all the great smiles and waves we get.
Friendly folks and some nice horses. I found the instruction to be inconsistent in terms of quality (having a plan for the lesson, keeping riders engaged with an appropriate level of challenge) and in terms of changes in instructors. At the same time, the mission of the place is excellent and the low key vibe a very nice change of pace in the DC ares. Check it out.
This is a great place to attend. The most pleasant and dedicated people to work with Ive ever run across. Great horse management, lessons and camp. Serious about the interaction between the riders, horses and teachers, yet laid back and friendly as can be. I recommend it highly.
The animals and humans here are all amazing! I went with a therapy group from Walter Reed, and I was really impressed not just with the way that the people treated us, buy with the obvious love and respect that they have for their horses. It was an incredible over all experience, and I would love to go back one day.
Theyre very nice the only thing I dont like is since those horses are rescued horses you cant make noises because the horses can go out of control. Theres hardly anything to do with little boys that are super active. If its me alone I love it but with two hyperactive boys and a great grandma with dementia is not a good place to visit. Other than that I love the place.
I was excited to take my kids to a pony ride when I first learned about this location. For a 15 minutes ride, never felt pressure to pay $22. It was planned months ahead and the expectation was high. Read reviews, watched pictures with my kids and built a fictitious picture of what it is gonna look. Finally, the day comes and we went there. First, there is nothing fancy like customer service, and second, it is like 7 minute ride for the kids and I walked on their side. So far, everything is fair. The biggest disappointment is the ride was on a horse, not a pony! My daughter was never happy to ride on a back of huge horse.
We brought our daughter for a quick ride. Girls working have us a tour of the stables and lead the horses for a short trail ride.
Really good totally recommend. Employees were a bit rude but the trail rides made you completely forget (hence how amazing they were) Im a horse rider so I completely recommend. They were very determined to help you learn to ride. Grew up riding here.......(everything from above is lies. Ive never been there but I put together everyones idea of it!)
Great place to see and interact with horses in DC, beautiful setting.
Good station with amenities for horseback Riders. There is also a small maze for kids to play in. As expected, its somewhat smelly but Im sure this is not an issue for horseback Riders who are used to it. Make sure to check out the stones from the old Capitol and White House masonry that were disposed off just next to the area.
It was a very nice experience just spending time with my man
Rude, plus raised the price of services and made us pay the difference from the original gift card! ridiculous. dont bother--so sad
The horse riders seem to think this is not a public space, and that everyone should be perfectly quiet around the horses. Also, they were encouraging feral cats in an area with high bird diversity
I took my daughter here for the Pumpkin Pony Ride and it was great and my daughter really loved it. Everyone was very friendly and the place was gorgeous. Definitely recommend.
We liked this place at the beginning, my daughter took lessons here for a couple years, and did horse shows. Her instructor was pretty nice, taught them a lot about horses and basics about riding, the kids have to do all the preparation and clean up for the horses, which can be hard for 9-10 year old. But the horses there are not very good, she fell three times, and Im glad she didnt get hurt. So be aware which horse theyre riding! Im not sure if those horses are rescue horses, if theyre, they should let you know.Unfortunately, the facility there is wearing out, and good instructors are leaving, and they rely a lot on the volunteers. Once shes old enough to do volunteering, theres lots of problems... Their summer CIT program is a joke! The horse camp charges a lot ($525/week), and they use CITs to do most of the work for free. So young CITs ends up have to do heavy physical work (enough for an Adult man), do more rounds without breaks, and some girls there are mean and grouping.... Some CITs there are as young as 12 or 11. They make it sounds good(teaching kids about customer service, etc), but no one care about these kids, because the kids are taught to be responsible, they canNOT take breaks because theres no people...... Well, the horse center are charging the camper for good money, and they overuse these CITs to do the hard work, what kind of logic is that? I guess the staff are overused too, so they dont have the energy to care? Will never send my kids there for volunteering again! Be careful to send your young kids volunteer there, if youre not somewhat related to the horse center they will probably never care!On a good side, their Halloween night can be fun.
Very friendly staff! We like bringing our toddler here occasionally for something a little different. He loves the pony rides!
Great place to take the little ones for a pony ride. Run primarily by volunteers.
Pretty fun, mostly all volunteer workers so they do it for their love for horses.
This is a beautiful park. Great tails and nicely marked mostly.
Very nice place with great staff&volunteers, horses, and you might even see a few mice and mouse snakes if youre lucky! Its hard to believe that its so close to downtown.
Visited Rock Creek Park on a visit home in DC. I grew up in the park, and its still wonderful!
Great trail ride. Our guide was knowledgeable and accommodating. Seriously a great time.
I love riding here! Great people and great horses
My granddaughter takes riding lessons and horse care.
Volunteered here to help with the hay truck, which occurs every saturday. My sister Colleen volunteered here for part of the summer to get some vet school large aninal experience, so thats how I found out about the Saturday hay truck. On her last Saturday I went doen witg my neice and nephew, and we made a day out of helping with the hay, cleaning the stalls etc. It was a great experience!!! And one I will be repeating soon!!:)
Wonderful place for learning about horses, riding and being out in the beautiful property
Great place, friendly staffs and amazing instructors ..
Awesome! The staff are very friendly and helpful.
Súper unwelcoming vibe from the lady with the ice cold eyes.
One of the many hidden gems of Dc!
Not worth it, tons of mice in the horse stalls and some of the employees were just rude. Expected better especially from all the supposed amazing reviews.
They are so nice and the horses are well cared for
Great staff beautiful horses
