Kipa (our kitten) was adopted one week yesterday.. He is such a lovable kitten..The staff was very helpful finding the perfect gift for my daughter...Thank you! For all that you do and continue to do for strays like Kipaπππππ
This location serves as a shelter and animal control too, I believe. The facility is small, the staff quite dedicated. Its a tough job and they are doing everything they can to help these animals. Shelter life is hard on the animals. They are scared in this loud environment. Every dog we saw took treats very gently. These are just a few of them. Sad to see so many Pitties!
Picked up a family pet who was brought in by animal control and the ladies (if youre still allowed to call them that) were super nice and friendly. The dog had a frayed and worn collar and they were kind enough to donate a new collar. They also updated the dog vaccinations and I was only charged $48. For a weeks boarding and vaccines. Super cheap
Our outdoor cat was brought to the shelter after it was found in her neighborhood. We could not have been more impressed by the high level of service from HRA. They called us after she was brought in, checked on her health, gave her a rabies shot and kept her overnight. They have a great tagging machine, so we gave our cat a tag for her collar.
Very friendly totally recommend to anyone whos trying to get DC License for their pet.
2 stars only-Disabled Lives Matter--I saw on the news about their great pet pantry parking lot services. People have to drive over & wait in line for their disabled & home bound relatives who CANNOT GO to the pet pantry. When I called & suggested that they send the litter, food, etc. to these home bound persons with the Meals on Wheels program like they do in Colorado, the man did not like the idea. As he said, we have sooo many volunteers that its not a problem for them to go to the parking lots. I told him that it IS a problem for the home bound pet owners. He did not care. Such is the way of life once YOURE disabled.
After a smooth adoption process with direct and informative staff that was compassionate to the needs of my new friend and myself, I have thoroughly enjoyed the early stages of acclimating my new best friend Patty (formerly Pantene) to our home.Front desk staff and adoption counselor was friendly, and the adoption supervisor(?) took time to call me and follow up with recommendations in regards to resources catered to this dogs needs. The foster parent has also been a great asset and to me that also demonstrates a certain caliber of professionalism on the part of HRA for holding on to such a volunteer. I strongly recommend that anyone who has an interest in adding a fur friend to their family take the time to stop by and meet the wonderful animals ready for a new home and the staff willing to make sure your experience is a positive one.
DONβT GO HERE!!!!!! HORRIBLE ADOPTION STAFF! Unprofessional and disorganized!! I was in the process of adopting and communicating with them and they let someone else adopt the dog I had already had a virtual visit with and they didnβt even tell me. I emailed them several times and sent my phone number regarding meeting the dog. Kieth M. NEVER even replied until AFTER my dog was adopted. Kieth M. is the WORST. See pic- no response from him on 8/17 and 8/21. DONβT GO HERE.
They get one star cause its no business number provided
They are friendly and kind..I came to make a donation of food..because in our home we belive in giving back ..Cant wait to help again
We had a great experience working with Uma and her team. They were responsive, helpful, and thorough in terms of processing our application, arranging a meet-and-greet, and facilitating the actual adoption. Uma was in touch throughout the process, and we deeply appreciate the significant amount of care, training, and medical attention that PRA and the AWESOME foster obviously put into helping our new pup in the time between when she was rescued and when we brought her home. We love our new canine companion, and we are grateful to PRA for connecting us!
I brought in a sick kitten last month. I told them I wanted to adopt him when he was available. They never called me. When I called for an update they said they had already adopted him out. Then I asked for a photo of him at least. They said theyd email me one but never did. How do I know they didnt really put him down after all the lies?!
Everyone here is nice, but when i walked in i wasnβt greeted at all. When me and my friend walked in, we was just standing there for about a minute before someone noticed us & finally asked us what we wanted to adopt. Thatβs the only problem i had but i personally think someone should be at the front desk at all times. but besides that, everyone there is super nice. i definitely recommend adopting from them.
Do to the pandemic adoptions are virtual now. Therefore, I was unable to see any dogs. When I visited their website, I didnt find a dog that I would be willing to adopt. Hopefully, Ill find a dog in the next few weeks.
Thank you so much for what you do!
They dont even provide a phone number for you to call
Dropped off donations
The wait sucks but they did a good job.
Had to put my dog down. This experience was harder than expected. The staff were professional caring and considerate.
I tried to adopt a cat over the span of three weeks from this location to no avail. My criteria was simple: a cat under the age of two years who had no known history of biting or scratching. After signing the forms to adopt the first cat, the medical examiners pushed off the date of her spay surgery for a week and a half before finally determining that the cat was severely ill and needed to be put in foster care to recover. The staff was not responsive to my calls up to the day before I was scheduled to pick up the cat on at least two separate occasions during that week and a half and attempted to shift the blame on to the medical examiners for failing to notify them of the delayed surgery.I then picked out a second cat and received the same poor service for another week and a half. Finally, I came back a third time where I was ignored by at least three staff members for a full 15 minutes straight. Despite the consistent poor service throughout these three weeks, I never once expressed outright anger and remained as patient as I could. Not once did anyone apologize for the poor service I received. As mentioned the blame was merely consistently shifted to the medical examiners. While the medical examiners may be the ones primarily at fault, the adoption staff are still human beings and should show at least a modicum of sympathy to students who have spent three weeks visiting your branch to try to find a cat to adopt. To anyone who has been experiencing something similar, I would highly recommend checking out the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. I was able to find the cutest little kitten there within a few hours, adopt him, and have been loving him lots over the past few months. Donβt waste your time with this rundown, unsanitary place filled with cages and apathetic staff. As a cat owner of 25 years, I have learned my lesson and will never come back to a place like the Humane Rescue Alliance again!
I adopted my dog from New York Avenue almost three years ago. Her name was Versace but my wife began calling her βPreciousβ. I still have Precious and she is like my child now. I lost my spouse a year ago and having Precious around is a loving reminder of my wife who loved her. I am so thankful to the Rescue Alliance because they really do care and the volunteers love what they do. I have fond recollections of my experience with New York Avenue Shelter. I forget the ladyβs name who helped me but let me say that she was wonderful. The shelter is a loving place while animals await a home. They offer so much support. I would suggest that DC residents find their paw mates from no other place. The Rescue Alliance is worthy of our support and patronage!
The Staff seemed very concerned and professional. I brought in a stray cat that had an injured paw and I filled out the intake form. What is the purpose of giving my information if they werent going to call back. I checked (yes) that I wanted to be notified of his condition because my son and I wanted him back. Made the call to find out, hes on the adoption list.
I adopted my cat from this location. The staff was very friendly and the price was not unreasonable. I know there has to be one so that they can maintain the facility, and so I am at peace with that. Please remember to adopt older cats as not only kittens need love. A very friendly place to go and if you just want to visit the cats for a while in the dogs, they certainly are okay with that
Incredibly helpful and caring employees. They go out of the way to help you with the process of adopting an animal and which one would be a good match for you. The people that work here are all, in my experience, genuine animal lovers. They do a lot of events too which is nice!
They have a lot of cats and dogs that needs homes all the cat and dogs lover our animals need luv 2 I really had a loving experience there.
Just Adopted a Adorable 9 month old Fur baby boy cat..hes soo Lovable. Highly trained knowledgeable staff members of every pets background plus situations. Ill Forever be indebted with The staff, they helped us find our New Family member!!
Courteous staff. Slightly difficult to get on grounds by car. Otherwise, very supportive place.
What a great experience! The staff is knowledgeable, caring, friendly yet professional. Brought home a 1 yr. old female purr-machine named Fairy (now Pixie) & she was the perfect adoption for me.
The staff is helpful and friendly. The facility is clean. And they conveniently have a free parking lot for your visit at their facility. My best friend forever adopted a wonderful dog. A great place to adopt a pet and give them a second chance in life. I recommend.
Only went to donate items no longer needed as my pet got her doggy wings. They were very helpful. They take pretty much anything.
Ive used this location to adopt my last two cats, and they always make the process easy. The staff is super helpful and passionate, and Im incredibly appreciative of the work they do!
I looked at some cats and kittens. They were so cute yall. Your heart will explode.
I surrendered my cats because I started my graduate program and didnt have anyone to help me with them. I had a signed documents stating that I was to be notified if they were to be euthanized. I called on Monday to check to ensure they had my info right and they told me my cats were on medical evaluation. I called again to check on them. They were put to sleep on Monday without notifying me. Turned out it was the vet error. They took something from me. I have had them for 16 years and they stole my opportunity to say good bye. Now I have trust issues because of that.
Crowded, but wonderful people. They were so kind when I hadbto put down my Rusty.
We just surrendered our amazing dog jax here- we just didnβt have time to take care of him the way we knew he deserved- needless to say, it was a very rough and sad experience. 2 men In The front were taking care of us and they were so cold and βmatter of factβ- they didnβt even offer to let us say bye to him! These dogs/ cats/ animals that people are releasing to this place were part of someoneβs family. Theyβre like children. Iβm sure that most of the people who work here probably like animals more than people (hence, why they work there)- but they not only should be kind to the animals, but also the people who have made that hard choice to let a part of their family go. Iβve adopted from here, Iβve put down my childhood dog here, and now Iβve just surrendered my first dog here. Iβve never had treatment like that before and I truly hope no one else ever had to experience the lack of care and empathy that my boyfriend and I just did. Terrible experience. Those 2 men should be ashamed of themselves.
My mom adopted my baby frm here!! Sheβs a domestic cat sheβs Grey and white! She was just a little baby when I first got her!! And now sheβs my fatty! Lol I love her so much and Iβm looking forward to adopting another feline friend to add to the family.
Me and my husband we found a bird on the street broken leg we took bird This place they are very nice people and they take care of birdβ€β€β€π―π€
My gripe isnt with adopting. I have called DC animal control from New York avenue to get two abandoned dogs. I already have 2 dogs. Would be hard to take more in. These were the sweetest dogs ever. Well mannered and friendly towards people. I called a week later to check on both dogs to see if they were adopted. I was told they were put down due to behavioral issues. Im a dog person. I know that was a dam lie. They are looking for reasons to put down dogs. If anybody finds stray or abandoned dogs in DC you are better off giving them away to a Good Samaritan or bringing them to a reputable shelter in Virginia.
These guys are amazing! Not only did they care for our lost dog and help us reconnect to him, but Olivia who works there figured out his unusual breed, which had been a mystery to us. So, so grateful they exist!
I got my black lab mix dog from this location. They rushed me to take her home once I picked her. It was the best experienced I ever had. She was healthy and they were so supportive with my questions. She just passed away after 17 years of a wonderful life. Ty TY TY I always support the humane society and plan on getting another dog or cat once my hearts into it again. Thanks, Paul F
First, Iβm familiar with the adoption process at the Humane Rescue Alliance and applaud the work theyβre doing to find new homes for amazing dogs. Iβve visited both the New York Ave and Oglethorpe locations a couple times each to see the different dogs as my girlfriend and I search for the perfect dog for our family. We see the great work the majority of the staff and volunteers are doing- this review is not a reflection on them. With that said, I had an extremely unpleasant experience when I went to adopt a dog at the New York Ave location. Per the Humane Rescue Alliance website, in order to adopt a dog you must first interact with the dog. Once interacting, you must submit a questionnaire and have a counseling session. I arrived at the Humane Rescue Alliance at 11:55AM to adopt a dog and after signing in to the general visitor log was brought back to meet the dog. I was the first person to meet the dog after the sheltered opened. After a few minutes and telling the worker I wanted to complete the adoption paperwork, another staff member entered and told me that someone else had signed the general visitor log before me stating that theyβd been there since 10AM and had first dibs on the dog. Couple issues here: 1) the sign in log was for overall visitors, not dog interactions. Weβve been to both shelters and interacted with dogs before and know thereβs a separate sign in sheet for meeting dogs. In addition, nowhere does the general visitor log specify which dog you were going to see (and these people were MIA when I was first interacting with the dog). 2) The shelter opened at 12PM, but these visitors had signed it at 10AM? How does that make sense? Whatβs more, they also had completed paperwork- also a little confusing when the shelter had just opened 5 minutes before. Whatβs worse, this dog was a resource guarder with a history of biting when around food and they adopted him to a home with multiple dogs- without ever introducing them pre-adoption. Thatβs a recipe for disaster. Unfortunately, this experience means we do not trust the Humane Rescue Alliance to both follow their adoption protocols or put the wellbeing of the animals first.
Pet Pantry is so awesome! Hope program referred me, thank you! Thank you amazing volunteers coming out and holding up the fort against the wind gusts!
(My rate is a 5 and a half)This place is very nice and the people who work their are very nice but my only problem is that they dont really have alot of small. Dogs.
!dopted a kitten on Clear the Shelters day and donated after the death of two of our dogs. They do great work that should be supported.
This is such a great shelter. We got two cats from here in the past 2 years. They have a pretty large facility, with lots of space for the animals. It really seems like everyone here loves the animals they work with.
Some of the staff members here are not animal lovers at all. It shouldnβt be forbidden to look at or play with kitties just because they are adopted. If you really love animals then you have to know they are all about being loved and keeping them in their cages with no attention until their new owner comes is not a humane way to take care of them at all. You should be ashamed of yourselves, I pitty those animals if you also treat them like you treat your customers trying to give some love to your adopted ones. A staff member literally shouted at us as if we just committed a crime. these pathetic human beings trying to justify their antisocial lifestyles at animal rescue shelters must be nowhere near animals.
For a group thats over capacity, these guys sure are quick to turn their noses up at good potential adopters.Reply to response: Ive already done that and you guys ignored me. You are swamped with dogs and cats because you are lazy, arrogant jerks.
The staff is friendly and helpful. There is a variety of cats and dogs to choose from. Its clean and the animals are care for. I will be getting my dog there in the future.
Because I adopted both my cats from the my Jimi Hendrix who we call Hendricks for short was returned twice was getting ready to walk the green mile and I also adopted Bob Dylan which we call Dylan for short was a kitten he was the runt of the litter and the mother cat left him in SE.This past week my cat Hendrix got out by accident and was missing for 5 days. When you adopt a cat or a dog from the Humane Society they neuter the animal give it give them their shots and they put a chip inside them when Hendrix went missing they are very good about posting him on the missing list we just had to send the picture and they put him on the missing the list which means it went viral so if youre thinking about adopting a cat or a dog the cost is very minimal considering what you get for that amount of money I paid $80 for both cats combined.
When my Dancerβs health declined because of cancer, he was clearly suffering. We said goodbye here in a place where I was able to tell him how much I loved him and how much I would miss him. The staff was very kind to us.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The shelter is fairly large, but most of the kennels are full. Im planning on rescuing one soon.
This organization took care of some kittens left in an alley behind my place in NE DCπ I called, gave a description & they came & rescued themπAwesome work & thank U a 1000 times overπΊπΊπΊ
I got me a puppy at 3 month old pitbull mixed I believe its mixed with some type of retriever very big paws beautiful puppy unique experience though had to pay right then and there for the puppy which was $265 but overall Im satisfied
Great society with helpful staff. We spent several weeks visiting mobile sites and New York Ave. We learned about lots of dogs, their temperaments, and how we would adapt with them through training.I recommend going through them for pet adoptions. However, be patient and get the right pet for you.
Very polite staff. I had to wait for the neutering but adopting my new partner in crime was easy and painless. I firmly believe in adopting instead of shopping and The dog I found was made for me.
I like this place a lot. Very clean areas for the cats and dogs. I will say that the staff was not very friendly to me at all. No one greeted me when I came in or anything. I had to stop an employee in their tracks to ask a question. Anyway, this was the best center I have ever been to.
All the people who I interacted with had genuine concern for the animals and that I get correct info and advice on the right pet. High marks for their level of caring
I adopted my buddy (Java) here about a little over a year ago. Cant say enough about how these folks care for abandoned animals. Go give them your money and bring home a new friend
Staff are very bright and attentive. They quickly handled my cat food donations and provided tax form.
Very helpful, patient and understanding staff. We ultimately lost our pet during the examination process but the staff was very informative and caring.
Many friendly pets. I love go there because I want to see those pets. Many abandoned pets live there. It is very sad but those pet will make you happy to see them.
I dropped off a donation to them. When I called 9n the phone. They were very helpful telling about their hours and. Where to drop off my donation. Everyone was very polite and helpful
Went to drop off beds and the nice staff allowed us to see the animals, we really liked Lily Pad, shes ready to be adopted
Sad that we need these places at all, but this one was clean and the animals were well taken care of which was nice.
Ive talk to several employees there they very unprofessional and very disrespectful on 9 11 2020 i ve call several times about someone coming out to my office building to retrieve this animal and call again the next day and one has call or shown up see u wouldnt have the type of problem from a animal rescue in va,or md only in dc where people are very lazy and dont want to do there job.
I have been suffering with really bad anxiety. So one day I was determined to get a dog. Never have I been to an animal shelter but they have made my first time amazing. More so the staff in the back. Royalty at the time looked sad, so right then and there I knew we needed each other. My biggest regret was not taking her brother also (even though he was adopted out).
Unfortunately for these animals, this agency puts bureaucracy above personal discussions with potentially great fosters or adopters. How many times can they throw forms and documents in peoples faces before they even discuss the condition of a poor pet who is sitting miserably in one of their cages. Unreal!!
The staff is great and very caring for the animals there. The adoption process was very easy and was able to save a very sweet poodle mix. Was surprised to see turtles and roosters there.
I surrendered my dog last week due to med school so I wanted to find a new home for her. They went out of their way to tell me I would be notified if she wasnβt an adoption candidate and would be euthanized so that I could try and find another home myself. They also went out of their way to say that they would not euthanize her without me being there. I call today to find out they euthanized her. She was such a shy girl and so so loveable. They claimed she started showing aggressions and trying to bite staff...she has never even bitten another dog that attacked her which has happened multiple times. There is NOTHING humane about this supposed humane rescue facility. They stole something you just donβt steal from someone. They saw how distraught I was that I had to say good bye to my baby girl and knew that I would do everything to keep her from being euthanized and if it had to be done I would never let her go through that without me. They promised me that moment then stole it right back. Do yourself a favor and find ANY other rescue shelter if you ever need to surrender a pet. And any representative that feels the need to respond to this...DONβT!! Iβd rather you not add salt to the wound you intentially left.
We adopted our wonderful dog named Champion from the shelter. We renamed his Kolby. He definitely was a handful. The first day we had him, we thought we had made a mistake and took him back. One day later we adopted him again and loved him sooooo much. He got sick and was in pain so we had to put him to sleep to ease his suffering. We loved that dog so much!!! We had him just about 4 years. Just gotta say how much we loved him and now miss him so much. So glad we had him as a part of our lives! Adoption is so incredibly important. Please give these guys/gals a chance!
Great place to rescue pitt bulls from or any other dog. Staff is friendly and they love what they do. Ive adopted two pitt bulls from here. Perfection both times.
The staff and volunteers here are trying their best to make sure all dogs, cats and other animals are cared for and will get great homes. Why would you go anywhere but a shelter?
Great place! Inviting employees or people just helping out! The animals are well taken care of also!
Great, friendly staff! I love it that they have a free pet food etc. box for whoever needs. Only place Ill take my donations!
I truly needed help with my German Shepard this alliance has helped since December 2017. When I first asked 71 Olgletgorpe st put me on the list to help with care, than hope program helped with love and compassionate as the human alliance at 1201 New York Ave NE. My baby had cancer.Thank you human alliance for concern love and compassion for my babyJacquelyne Johnson
Great pets that need you and me πΆπ±π°πΉπ±ππ’πππ π©π©
I had to put down my beloved Ginger last week! The staff was very compassionate and kind! Such great people!#
Great customer service and I adopted my dog 3 years ago and they still follow up
Dr. Hathaway is the best vet Ive ever met or seen. Amazing at her job and cares more than I could have imagined possible!
Animals were being kept with love and responsibility.
Even though the reason that I was there was not the best circumstances, the workers were very understanding and helpful. They explained what was going to happen next with the pet I was dropping off and the possible options. I called back later and was able to check on the dogπΆ.
I was sick of being put on a wild goose chase. First I was told to come there and turn in my money order for my dogs pet license. When I got there they told me that there was nobody on staff at that particular time and I had to come back earlier before 5.I came before 5 the next time and they told me they could not accept the money order they told me to bring the first time.I also went to the one on Oglethorpe and they told me they were closed and couldnt take it.I already made a mistake on the money order and it was too large and had to go back and change it in. They wanted me to do it again. Then they tried to claim when we first got there they didnt know it was a money order, and they thought it was a check yet they ASKED US to please finish filling out the MONEY ORDER.When we told them about a stray dog that had been coming into our yard we were trying to catch and we had called several times as recently as two hours before we had gotten there, they asked us why didnt we call them as if we didnt just say we had called them two hours ago the very last time before we got there. We even told them how neighbors were feeding the dog and they said maybe we should call and have someone come out there. So its kind of hard to talk to people who dont listen to anything you say. It is no fun to just keep repeating yourself over and over again.I am not Velma from Scooby-Doo I dont find it funny. If they think youve done anything wrong and they feel in the mood to do something they will come after you hard.If you ask them for help because somebody has done something wrong, or some animal needs help, they become The Gang That Couldnt Shoot Straight.
I got a dog named coco who is a loveable dog but they spayed her without my permission before purchasing her now she can never have children.
I called for assistance with my puppy Draco that bit me. I had a dogcatcher ask me to sign to have my dog euthanized which I thought was harsh. But because I was so emotional I signed without reading what paperwork stated. I went to see shelter to see how I could retrieve his ashes. But found out they had my dog in surgery for neutering and that he was going up for adoption the next day. I called and representative on phone was very rude to me and said most likely I could apply but they may not let me adopt him since I surrendered him. I called Channel 7 news up there where I was waiting on lot when representative called police on me. I think they are outright stealing peoples animals for a profit. My dog name was listed as Drako on the website as if I wouldnt know it was my dog. They need to be shut down for misleading people for financial gains. The worst animal humane society I have ever came in contact with. But if you have adopted my dog Drako I want him back. I am willing to pay you for him. Thanks.
There is a black gentleman there (that claims he its his place and he run things) he is BEYONDDDDDDD RUDE!!!!! I have gone there on two occasions and he has been rude and disrespectful both times....And quick to tell you that you can leaveIf it wasnt for the great work that they do for the animals I would never step foot in that place again!! Well actually I dont plan on stepping foot in that place again I rather go to a vet that charges me full prices.
This place is great- people who dont understand what workers at the shelter deal with and see on a regular basis will be quick to judge and draw hilariously wrong assumptions. To respond to someone before my post, the euth requested which obviously meant it was going to be euthanized is completely incorrect - it is more likely the dog was surrendered by a former OWNER of the animal who did not have the finances to euthanize their sick or suffering animal- this is something WHS would consider if the owner was otherwise going to abandon it. As for the dog in the cage behind the desk- that was likely a new intake/surrender who was about to undergo behavioral testing and a work up before being assigned a kennel- also standard AND temporary. The people here love animals and, like some of the animals they care for, sometimes come to trust people less which is very understandable when you see people abusing their pets or leaving them on the street without food and then managing to take them back.
Get place to go snuggle with the animals of your choosing. The staff members are super friendly and helpful. Everyone there just wants to make sure that both you and your pet will be happy together.
I got my dog from there and get good stuff from the free box to help with things she needs and more
I had to take a alley cat that had a stroke and have him put down I feed the alley cats in NE they were very good and let me stay with him until he went to heaven. Mo you will be dearly missed love you always.
Amazing staff. Great place to volunteer, foster or adopt.
The people were awesome and very knowledgeable about the dogs. IF you were thinking about stooping by DO IT. lol You might just find your new best friend i know I did =)
Even thought it was more like a shelter, people were much more inviting and helpful when trying to describe the animals behavior. The place was clean and they even have a separate building for more animals.
