Was looking for a reliable place to complete basic tasks on my car ie oil changes, tire rotations, brakes, fluids, etc and happened to find Big Al’s. I was very happy with the customer service and Tim was a personable and knowledgeable guy. Very happy with my oil change and tire rotation and will be back if any car problems or needs arise.
They fixed my leaking muffler on my 4runner and double checked the leaking axle seal another shop said was bad. Didnt end up needing the seal and they did a awesome job with my muffler. Great guys and Ill definitely be going back if I need exhaust work or anything they do there.
I have followed Tim to from location to location because he has ALWAYS taken good, honest care of me and my vehicles. I started coming to Big Als three years ago when I needed diagnostics done for a previous vehicle, and I have continued coming here ever since because of the positive experience I had that first time. Tim is always patient, professional, and he helps me to get the work I need done in the most efficient and cost effective way I can. Even when something is incorrect, I know I can bring iy back and have it redone without issue. Every bit of maintenance and brake work that I can done here, I do. I send my friends, coworkers and family members here. Its so rare to find shops and service advisors whom you trust to do a good, honest job at a fair price, and I absolutely trust Tim and his crew to do that here.
Tim and crew were exceptional in their customer service and went above and beyond to make sure my experience with Big Als was second to none.
First time customer but will be a returning customer. Very friendly, quick, and efficient. Thank you guys so much!
Got my oil changed. It was pretty quick and a friendly place. I will definitely go back.
Friendly, professional, fair prices!
Tim, Chris and all the guys there who worked on my 07’ Toyota Camry yesterday afternoon, just want to say thank you so much for everything. My car broke down 350 miles away from home on the Chesapeake bridge after the first tunnel and got my car towed to Big Al’s and Tim and the other guys were fast, honest, kind, and just awesome. They checked my car right away and told me my caliper bolts were loose and one came out in the highway. It was scary but he helped me and fixed it all right away. My entire family and I are so grateful for this place. Closest to the bridge too. He fixed it, tested it and it ran smoothly for the next 350 miles. Thank you so much again. Best mechanic I probably have ever gone to.
Solid, no attempt to upsale, and just good service. I am a repeat customer and would happily drive across town to use big als
Fast,friendly, and fair priced
I was recommended to Tim @ Big Als from Advanced Auto.Tim was very personable and took the time without rushing to explain what my moms car issues were and what it would take to fix it. We left feeling a little more confident, then when we came.
Big Als on Independence staff are very courteous and knowledgeable. I bring all my vehicles here for service; which saves me a lot of money. I recently took one of my vehicles for state inspection at a dealership and the services that the dealership wanted to perform were over $1k. After taking my vehicle to Big Als, I was able to save over $600 compared to dealership prices. I highly recommend this store location for all services repairs and maintenance.
Always take care of me
After being scammed by one place in the area and than having another shop try the same thing, I was not impressed with the area’s auto repair shops. Luckily, I decided to come here. Honestly, the workers are genuine, respectful and have proven themselves to be trustworthy. They also did the work for a reasonable price and fixed everything quickly.
Great customer service . Tim (I think) took time to answer my question about whether I needed a tune up versus fuel induction cleaning. Very informative. I verified on line when I got home. Thank you so much!
How in the hell do you get a estimate of $6800 to fix brakes? Thats the price of a god damn car you crooks. I got home and fixed the car myself for $50. It literally needed pads like I told the manager. He said I needed a whole new system. Even with a whole new brake system, how do you come up $6800??
Got quoted almost $500 for something simple, Tim said it would take 4 to 5 hours labor and was also overcharging me for a part. Called around a few other places and got quoted with another big als and with Mazda for $200. Other places said that takes 2 hours labor max. This place is a rip off, if you’re a female expect to get ripped off bad.
I have come here dozens of times with GREAT service and honesty every time. They will take the special attention and look into every concern.
I needed a new alternator for my vehicle.Griff,Cj and Tim were so awesome. They were very helpful and professional.I would recommend anyone to this place.
Great shop knowledgeable tecks good value for work done.
Its hard to not be skeptical of car repair shops with poor reputations. After residing in the Chicks Beach/Bayside area and passing Big Als for 15 years I had my first service with them and is was surprisingly good.Whats most important to understand is that they do much more than specialize in Muffler & Brake work. As a matter of fact they added Big Als Mufflers & Brakes (& more) onto their name. However the store sign is void of this which should be corrected. The location is great off North Independence and the signage exceptional. The shop sits just off the road so they have excellent exposure to the road. The lot was clean. The garage doors were open when I pulled in. The stalls are dirty with a lot of mufflers etc around. It looks very worked in. Just dont expect a spic and span dealer garage look.I arranged my Honda repair with manager Tim. I immediately knew from talking over the phone he would be phenomenal. Tim was professional from quote to pick up. He has run the shop over a year and treats customers like family. He told me I will only recommend repairs that need completed atv the time.My own original diagnosis with a machine that I own at home identified an issue with the alternator. However, once in the shop Tim identified the starter as the problem. The price for a starter replacement was affordable and beat other area shops.I would absolutely return to Big Als. They do pretty much everything except oil changes and state inspections on all models of cars. They are a local franchised garage. Scheduling was easily done the next day. My Honda is running great and was returned with a clean interior. Thank you Tim and Big Als. Im so glad I gave you my business.
Went in with a altima educated me on the repair great place
Nice quick easy very professional great pricing highly recommended s/o to my guys Griff and CJ
I don’t normal write reviews but theses guys at this location, always do an awesome job on my cars, will only take my cars at this location, they take pride in the work they do and always make sure you are satisfied before you leave if I could give 100 stars I would highly recommend this location for your car needs
Theyre always polite with great service. They do good work on my car for a good price. Highly recommend.
Griff and CJ treated me like family always love coming to them for help and car advice
Always come by this shop to get work done and always leave with top notch work at an amazing price. Brought my Jeep Patriot into the shop to get some brakes done since some other shop( not gunna drop names) didnt assemble my brakes right. Griff and the guys down here took care of the problem within no time. 110% recommend this place for any auto needs.
Thanks to Griff and CJ for taking care of my needs..offered fair prices..wonderful customer service experience..
Customer service was horrible
I am a regular customer at this Big Als at 1613 Independence Blvd., Va. Beach, 23455. Always excellent service. Great customer service!! Jim Sills, Manager, has always treated me well. In and out and great prices. Service Techs are awesome with lots of knowledge and experience. I can always rely on the repairs of my vehicle. I highly, highly recommend customers to stop in to experience the great service provided by this Big Als! Thank you Jim and your team of techs!!
There to get a oil change in and out within an hour Griff was professional and very courteous first time at this store will definitely come back. Rhod Beckles..
Mike & Cory are awesome! So happy I decided to bring my car here today. If your looking for a place for yourcar they will take care of you!
Our Toyota Camry failed a state inspection administered at a different auto service center and I therefore came to Big Als to make the vehicle compliant again. The service was outstanding to say the least. The gentleman at the counter, Jim, was very friendly, helpful, polite, personable and made me feel confident that I wasnt going to be taken for a ride. My vehicle was looked at and repaired quicker than what I had anticipated and the price that I was quoted was considerably lower than if I had done the same repair at the dealer. Thanks for being an honest, fair, and high quality repair shop; theres not many!
Big Al’s has such great staff and very timely. Highly recommended!!
Love the guys who work there. Very honest and fair.
I got my muffler and my brakes and a water pump fixed best money spent
I took my car to the shop thinking I needed brake pads. The mechanic, Cory, inspected my brakes, told me there was nothing wrong with them and even asked me to take a ride around the block with him to point out any concerns. I REALLY appreciated his honesty. I am a federal employee (currently furloughed) and didnt want to postpone a potential problem only to end up with a major problem (without funds) due to waiting. This made my day. 😊
People are great, work is superb, had a little miscommunication but it was easily settled.
I was in desperate need of new brakes/rotors and the desk guy Tim or Jim(sorry) was really friendly and straight to the point. Wasnt the fastest service Ive ever experienced but it was one of the very few experiences taking my car somewhere where I havent felt like Im being taken advantage of by trying to get a bunch of unnecessary work done. Check em out!
Last week we had took my daughters Ford Explorer to the Big Als on Independence. Short version, they stated they replaced the alternator and a battery. Which was purchased from Ford in 3/2018. So, we went to pick up the car. We had to jump start the car. Then, as we were driving down Independence blvd the lights on the car and the dashboard shut off. So we turned around and parked the truck back at Big Als. When we spoke to the owner, he stated it was something else. Then, the truck still wasnt running. Next, the owner told us we need to take the vehicle to Ford. Well received a call, today. Guess what we need, and alternator. I will never recommend this place to absolutely anyone.
If I could put zero I would. So I have been a loyal customer for almost 7 years and through out the years when dealing with either finding out one of the mechanics broke something in my car without telling me, changing of prices within a week or unauthorized checks of my car leading to more damage I have received the worse customer service. A week ago I went in for my exhaust to be fixed, they did an engine check letting me know where the hole was and how much it was going to cost(great visit with someone else).Today I came back to get it fixed only for Mike and the mechanic to check my vehicle again which was unauthorized to tell me my car would fail inspection if I didnt get another part put on that will also keep me from getting warranty on the exhaust part. So I asked what was the difference from a week ago that now I need this other part? Because a week ago everything was good I guess because my inspection is due knowing I need everything fixed they try to get more money so i will be taking my money elsewhere because nobody should be taken advantage of. Its happened too many times and it pathetic the company have to take trust from a loyal customer in order to make money. Big als no need to respond yall are crooks if you dealing with females or people that you think dont know much about their car but this female do. Dated 07/24/2019. I would only recommend Big Als to someone that wants a quick fix with the knowledge of something else breaking and poor work. I can understand a mistake but with this establishment its 5050 chance when it should be 95 knowing they should all be certified.
Big Al’s at 1613 Independence Blvd has become my “go to” place for car repair. I bring my vehicles in for regular maintenance and any time I have car trouble. I recently stopped in to have my clutch looked at. After inspecting it and seeing that it was okay, and tightening a battery terminal connection for me, Jim handed me the keys and told me that everything is good to go, at no charge. This isn’t the first time that he has taken care of me.This place is one of those rare finds that is staffed by honest, hard working people that know your name and do a great job at a good price. I highly recommend trying out this establishment. You will become a regular customer too!
I brought my Xterra in for a cracked manifold, found out it was both the manifold and catalytic converter; which is an expensive fix with labor. Before I could ask what the cost would be, I was told to take it to the dealership to have it fixed as both parts are covered under a Federal Warranty. These guys couldve easily not said anything about it and gotten a high priced ticket, instead they chose to be honest and saved me a lot of money. Ive taken my vehicle to another Big Als in the past and received the same type of honest work and treatment. The gentlemen that work for this company are top notch guys who truly put the customers best interest first. Highly recommend them for business.
Definitely would recommend. I had an oil change, tires rotated, fluids topped off, and checked the battery, hoses, and belt that took only just over an hour. They showed me what had been done. Friendly, personable, and will be seeing them again for my next oil change.
Chris is very helpful I got my brakes pads changed great price. Thank you
My faith has been restored in Big Als. Charles - The General Manager stepped in and price adjusted my tail pipes. I will continue to do business with them.
Had an exhaust leak and cracked brake pads. Dropped the car off late in a Friday night and they said they may be able to do it that same night. They did and I was happy when I found out it would only cost me $150. I got an appraisal at another shop and they said just the brakes would cost me $500. I will tell my friends about this place and cant wait to do business here in the future!
I have used this Big Als for many years without a problem. I trusted everyone there. I was told that I needed motor mounts and a friend had access to new ones at a very good price, so I got them. I took my car in to have the motor mounts put on. They put on 2 of the 3, said they couldnt put the 3rd on as it would be too difficult. 10 days later the motor blew up (no compression, they said). Anyway, the had told me that they put the remaining motor mount in my car. But it was never in there. There is a opinion of several mechanic friends that they must have damaged something for the motor to blow up like that. So besides not having a car that runs, they deny that they have the motor mount ($100), so I am out that as well. I would not recommend Big Als to anyone for anything any more!
I’m so disappointed with Big Als. They gave me a bill for $900 telling me I needed new brakes and rotors however I took the same car to RK Chevy and I passed my inspection..Big als means big Scammers
Great place to take your car. They do good work.
I put headers on my 64 ford falcon. These guys really took their time and did an amazing job.
Brought in to get brakes repaired... replaced front brakes as suggested... $330... when I left brakes started squealing... never squealed previously... so I called... they told me new brakes take time... so I drove it a week... came back... they are now blaming it on back brakes... didnt squeal before I brought it in... spent $330... and now it does rough... should have looked at 3.7 rating before I brought it... it tells the tale
I was revfered by my car dealer at Marlin Motors (Jeff Fox) for an oil change. I was greatest by the owner, Jim Sills. I was pleased to find a great neighborhood car shop with good mechanics and great service. Like I said I went for a n oil change, but when they got my Nissan Altama on the rack the Mechanic did an under car inspection and found some problems that needed my attention. They didnt just tell me the bad news, they invited me into the shop to show me and give me suggestions be time I went back in the office Jim had made a few calls and told me about the part and costs. I was able to get the oil change serpentine belt and catalytic converter done in a couple of hours. I am delighted to find this shop and to start a new relationship to maintain my 2005 Nissan(which is a ever after car Im 65 and this will be the last car I buyIts good to hav e a shop I can trust Kenny Sherwood, Notfolk
They charged me over $1000 to replace the catalytic converter, muffler, exhaust, and tailpipe. It has been 17 months since it was done and I have has several mechanics look at it (due to a CEL) and they all say it looks like it wasnt even replaced. Some may say its because of the Northeast winters, but it was barely driven last winter and then I moved to Texas. The check engine light has been on since February indicating the converter needed to be replaced. So I was out $1000 for nothing. They werent very helpful when I called, in fact they were downright rude to me. Given my situation, I am not able to bring it back to them for them to check it and they had no helpful suggestions towards finding a place that would cover the warranty. I would NOT recommend them to anyone. Just trying to help anyone in the future.
Has forever earned my trust as a customer! Another company told me I needed rear brakes and the manager joe had my truck checked out and advised me Im good for another six months. Ill be a returning customer always!
They were fast to repair my car... they were also honest about the estimates. A bit expensive, but I was willing to bend a bit on price.
Great prices, good quality work, extremely honest staff. Just not quick
Customer service was great. Jim is a very nice man.
BIG ALs couldnt do my car today like promise..and say because a certain machinic that debated with me wont there!? And my car stopped working right after! Some genuine folks helped out though..out of the Road! Therefore I blame Big Als unprofessionalize dealing with money and car problems on these Big Ps I have now..smh Jim said any day..bring it on down..
I came to Big Al s with a coupon they were offering 69.oo serpentine belt service 3 hours wait till my car was taking into the building. The Manager Jim came and ask me somebody else tried working on my car. The manager Jim said another quote of 429.00 to replace a another called tension lever. Stay away waste of time
Dont do business with this company. They are the worst. They will scan you. Do not spend your money with them. They will be nice until they get your money, then they will quickly become rude and inconsiderate.
Tried to charge me $75 for a part that I got for $25 and the part wasnt the problem, it was only the seal. Also, if you are a women they will try and take advantage of you!!!!!
This place is direct, up front, and honest. Fixed my problem for $65 and didnt try to bs me and say I needed a whole new exhaust system. Thanks guys!!
Great service! Took great care of my truck!
As a student thats going to automotive mechanic and high performance im picky with who services my vehicles. i have had some bad experiences with other shops in the past so after reading reviews i decided to go to Als on Independance and Pleasure House Rd for an oil change. the waiting area is clean and neat. Jim the manager was courteous and a great multitasker, was on the phone while doing my order in which i did not mind one bit after all i know how busy a shop can be. John did my oil change and i have to say while yes its just a simple oil change he was very nice to the point that he came in the waiting are and showed me the dip stick as proof that the oil was changed and filled to the line. no where i have been in the past have they ever done this so i was very surprised and very impressed at the way they treated me. customer service was great and so was the service they did. i will HIGHLY recommend this shop to anyone and compared to other around the area to me they have pretty good prices and thats always a plus in my pocket. so if your looking to get your car serviced i say give Big Als a shot...will be seeing them for all my work from now on.2010 Chevy Impala
Quality service every time that I come here. Thanks to Jim and the crew.
Quick and affordable service.
Awful experience! Dropped car off for possible muffler/catalytic converter problem and within half hour radiator mysteriously broken. Gave estimate of $4,300. Must have thought I was a rich and stupid old lady. Took elsewhere and had fixed for $400 including new radiator.
Excellent service. Great helpful staff.
My car needed new brake pad on the rear, they not only gave me the cheapest rate of the the 3 places I went to, but stayed past their hours of operation to help me get my car back same day.
Always ask them to show the old parts from the car repairs because will charge for work they didnt do.
They take care of their customers with lots of support and honesty!!
Great work and great pricing.
Love them!
Great job and affordable price
Worst and I mean worst experience ever brought my truck there and they lied and said they would do an inspection before repairing and they didn’t they changed my battery that I just purchased from Ford in March without my permission picked my truck up and it was in the same condition I brought it they admitted they don’t test drive after the repair which led me to bring it back not once but twice and they refuse to give me my old battery back nor a refund STAY AWAY!
Brought my car for a scheduled oil change. It took all of 5 minutes so I was skeptical that it was even done. I pointedly asked the tech if he was Sure he performed the service. Less than a couple months later the car sensor is alerting me that I need to change/check the oil.
Where I always go for a muffler
Had what I needed
