Excellent place to eat! My waitress, Ashley, was spot-on with service, delivery, and friendliness! Although this place may look like a Cracker Barrel inside, you can tell the difference in the food right away. Each dish is crafted by hand, and the recipes taste homemade (not like industry food). I HIGHLY RECOMMEND eating here if youre in the area.

I loved my experience here! It’s such a fun place and the food was great! They brought out “fixin’s” which consisted of a bread basket with rolls and sweet bread, coleslaw, and cottage cheese.Potato soup was… amazing!!!They have brunch buffet on the weekend! I can’t wait to go back!

We were super excited to try the Machine Shed. Heard great things about it, lots of great reviews. Waitress was fantastic. It started to get busy while we were there but she handled it like a pro. I asked if the fried chicken was any good and she said if they serve old chicken its not good but fresh was really good. I asked her to check and she said she would make sure I got fresh fried chicken. Our dinner rolls came out and they were in the dry side so we didnt ask for more than the 2 we received. Best friend ordered the BBQ combo platter. When the food arrived, the mashed potatoes on both plates were cold and contained large lumps of undercooked potatoes in it. My coleslaw was probably the best coleslaw I ever had. Chicken was luke warm but tasted great. The corn that came with was bland. I wont even salt or pepper my food, Im a very bland eater and it was even too bland for me. Best friend had me try her food. They use a ton of BBQ sauce so if you like a normal or light amount, you should probably specify. I suspect it is used to drown out the dryness. The combo came with 3 meats, all very dry. Chicken almost tasted boiled. The baked beans werent very tasty and the meat thrown in was dry. We ended up leaving over half our meals and didnt take a to go box. We will definitely not be back. They serve drinks in small Mason like jars and I would suggest they upgrade to the larger Mason sized ones with handles. The waitress has to refill a million times because they arent large and the place is too busy for that. Do the waiter/waitresses a favor and buy larger jars, they will love that. Much less running around.Positives : clean establishment. Friendly staff. Fried chicken, although not hot, was tasty. Best coleslaw ever. Good sized portions. Very nice atmosphere.Negatives: super dry rolls, the 3 meats were dry on the BBQ combo, the meat was dry in the beans. Beans werent great and corn was bland. The food was an extreme disappointment.

Came here with some family and I LOVED it! The gifts area of the building is like Cracker Barrel times 10! I came to Iowa from Buffalo, NY and I was able to get some souvenirs to take back home with me. Breakfast was really good too! I ordered the veggie skillet with hashbrowns and an English muffin and the size of it was huge! Wish we had one here!

We had a great lunch here on Sunday afternoon. One of the best restaurant in Iowa. It is located in Urbandale, IA. Farm fresh foods. They served fresh homemade cottage cheese, coleslaw and bread with butter. It was so delicious 😋. My kids love those cottage cheese. Good customer service. Our waitress talked so nice and kind. Chicken stripes was so crunchy and juicy. The meats were all very soft and tasty. This is one of our favorite restaurant. The place is very clean and neat. We like to come back again. Thank you 😊

Another favorite when traveling through. Good old fashion home cooking, but on a larger scale. You can order things such as pot roast, and unlike many other places, it will taste like grandma made it, and that it had been in the slow cooker since the night before. I’ve never been disappointed with a meal here. Today, I opted for something very different. Instead of brisket, or ribs, or a stuffed pork chop, or even the pot roast, I tried their special, which was cod, potatoes and salad bar for $12.99. The 3 pieces of fish were a good amount and same with the potatoes and gravy. But, they also brought a big roll and 2 pieces of pumpkin bread out to start. From the salad bar, you’ll see I chose cottage cheese, a fruit mix, and a salad consisting of hard boiled egg, fresh grated cheese, hard build egg, real bacon bits, and what appeared to be home made croutons. I was hungry, and wasn’t able to make a 2nd salad bar round by the time I was done, so I didn’t get to try the drunkin apples on the salad bar, which are always good as well. I also took a picture from the shop, as kind of like a Cracker Barrel, they have an entry shop full of fun things to look at and buy. This is a great place to eat.

It was very good. I had a chicken strip dinner that came with Cole slaw, apples, rolls and a piece of ginger bread! I shared it with hubby. The apples were delicious! Hubby had a pork chop sandwich that he enjoyed. If youre in an RV or pulling a trailer get there at an off time so you can find parking. Im not sure if there was more parking behind? It was easy getting into with a street light at the intersection plus its right off of I-35.

Have enjoyed stops here before, so treated my parents and son for dinner last night. The bread (including pumpkin bread bites) served at the start of our visit were delicious. My wife and I shared a bowl of Loaded Potato soup, followed by the Heartland Combo of 3 different award-winning pork chop recipes (see photo). All were very good...it was hard to pick a favorite.Vegetables, cottage cheese and cole slaw were all served family style and were good - especially liked the light yet creamy cole slaw. I ordered a sweet potato and if you order that, be sure to get some of their cinnamon butter for topping.Great stop for your elderly, rural visitors - with all of the historical farm pictures and equipment along with the bib overalls-clad waitresses. If you found this review helpful, please click on Like.

We ordered carryout online to enjoy with a guest from out east, who had never eaten here. The ordering process on the website was straightforward, the charges were clear, and the order was packaged and ready when we arrived. Though we had to drive almost an hour before eating, the food was still delicious! For those dining in, the restaurant is a pleasant atmosphere. Its not too loud, the wait staff is attentive, and there is a good gift shop in which to shop for Iowa- and rural-themed items. Some may say that the servers outfits are a bit much, but their overalls are a fun touch in keeping with the restaurants theme.Weve brought several friends from other states here, and everyone has enjoyed their meals. If its operating when the weather is nice, take the hayrack ride, too.

Machine Shed is an apparent Iowa institution, though unfamiliar to me.Presents a country/farming motif emphasizing wholesome Americana. It’s the kind of place where I’d be shocked to hear a cuss word.Lots of branded merchandise (reminiscent of Cracker Barrel) which I suspect sells well. A steady, quiet stream of country music can be heard overhead.I arrived at the changeover from breakfast to the lunch menu, but they were flexible enough to serve me breakfast. For 3 eggs, hash browns, links, toast, juice and coffee I was charged $16.12, which seems to be right in the Perkins/IHOP ballpark.Food was fine aside from the toast, which was cold.Food 4/5Service 5/5Cleanliness 5/5Location 5/5

This restaurant came highly recommended from a friend. We arrived at 10:40 AM and were forced into the lunch menu. Just as we were being seated the folks behind us were being served breakfast. The salad bar was not even setup at this time. I mentioned to the wait staff that we came for breakfast, she shrugged her shoulders and said oh, we quit serving breakfast at 10:45, but you could come back on Sunday for our brunch. We tried to make the best of it. I went with the potato soup and quit eating it after I hit some sandy grit. My daughter had the brisket sandwich and it was dry, chewy, too thick of slices for a sandwich, and obviously not fresh cooked...nothing like leftovers, ick. There was some type of a bar on my plate but since it wasnt listed on the menu and the wait staff didnt tell me what it was, it was not eaten. The flies buzzing around our heads was just gross. I wont be going back and I wont recommend this place to anyone.

Long service intervals difficult for adults not to mention a child. The$240.00 check (including $40 tip) was reasonable for the amount of food. A restaurant everyone should experience at least once. I found your soft hustle during breakfast on 7/17 to be disingenuous. We ordered the French toast. The waitress responded by saying Do you want bacon or sausage? I tried to resolve this privately, but my Facebook message went unanswered.Food tasty and server friendly otherwise. But the hustle isnt appreciated.

There was 7 in our group and none of us were thrilled with the food.First time most of us have been here in probably 5 or so years and the quality of the food has gone down. All of our memories were of this amazing food and large generous portions - those remain. I think all of us had take home boxes.Mother in law had the meatloaf and it was bland. Two had the general hamburger and both said b-bops was better. Birthday boy had fried chicken and said that Pizza Ranch was tastier. It was fried but little to no seasoning.Wifes pot roast was tender but also lacked flavor. We went to Machine Shed based on all of ours positive memories of what it once was. We love Machine Sheds weekend brunch. The Des Moines location is right next to the Living History Farms off of Hickman Road in Urbandale. There is no better setting for this restaurant than being next to an attraction that celebrates the farm life. Be warned though, the line can get quite long on the weekends. Fortunately, there is a sizable gift shop in the area to buy all sort of farm related knick knacks. The food itself is your typical hardy all-American farm food consisting of eggs, meats, and plenty of desserts for after the meal. The restaurant does offer a regular menu as well, and serving portion are plentiful. One of their most famous items is the cinnamon rolls. Its about the equivalent of 4 of your standard rolls, and it costs about 4 times the price too. There are plenty of parking available and the service is friendly. Highly recommend visiting this place for weekend brunch when in the area.
