I hope youre sitting down. This is a long review. First of all I am going to try and remain respectful, but they way things are done here makes me wonder. However, maybe the owner will read this too and change things. I would have loved to have had a business relationship with them as they are close and James seems like a nice guy, but due to his decisions I cant.I have to give you a bit of a backstory so you know where I am coming from.I have a trust fund. It takes care of my car. I do not handle payments for repairs, the bank does. So anyone that works on the car deals with the bank directly. I have been using Pinegar since I bought the car, but wanted to work with someone local and closer. So I asked the bank to make contact with this company. The bank setup payment arrangements then I called James to setup a time to take the car in.I told James what was wrong, crankshaft sensor and shifter needed to be fixed. I also mentioned it needed an oil change. James asked me how I knew it needed a crank sensor and I told him I took it to Autozone and had them run a test. He said, Oh well test it ourselves to make sure theres nothing else. I agreed that was a good idea. I then setup a time for it to get worked on. I took the car in on the appointment date and waited. In the meantime I verified with my bank that the payment would be mailed as soon as the car was fixed.Fast forward a few days. I called the mechanics to check on the car. No work had been done! Their excuse was they wanted payment UP FRONT before work could be done! So I called the bank and told them to go ahead and send a check. They did, but it took a week to get there. I wound up having to go get my car back before it was worked on because I had to take care of a personal emergency. I asked James to call me as soon as the check got in so I could take the car back. He said he would.Another week went by and the bank said the check should have arrived. So I called James back on a Tuesday. He said the check got there YESTERDAY (Monday). Yet, he didnt bother to call. So he then said I could take it up there Thursday. I did. When I got there he didnt even have the part ordered! What were you doing that whole time you had my money James?I will say that I had asked the bank to stop payment on the check so I could go elsewhere, but they said to hold off. So I did. Already felt 2 weeks was long enough for an hours worth of work as thats about how long it took for them to do the job. Oh and guess what? The cars check engine light is STILL on and still runs bad, albeit not as bad, but there are still issues. I wont be going back and you should think twice before you use them too.Key point to remember:1. They said they do the diagnostics themselves.2. They wanted payment up front. If he was really concerned about not getting paid as he said, he has the power of a mechanics lien. He could have also verified my account with the local Hawthorn bank.3. He never called and made me wait more than a fair amount of time. He should have stated from the start he wasnt going to work on it before getting paid and he then should have called as soon as he got the check. Funny thing is had he done the work to immediately my bank would have overnighted the check, but because he didnt they snail mailed it instead.4. Despite telling them what was wrong and promising to do their own diagnoses they totally skipped the shifter issue. When I brought that up James denied I ever said anything.5. It took 16 days for them to finally start the process to fix the car yet only took an hour when the work began! From June 4th to June 20th.AVOID!

I will never go anywhere else again. Theres something that just feels great when you go to a business, (especially one such as a mechanic shop), and they do what they say they will for you, and they do it right! Ive been coming here for damn near close to 5 years! During that time the boys at preferred auto repair have taken the time to make sure my vehicles were fixed, and running good, and they never broke the bank. Being a mechanic isnt easy, and they could easily charge 4x what they do, but its a great value with the level of care those guys do. Dont waste your time going anywhere else, do what I do and make Preferred, your preffered shop!
