I wasn’t going to write a review but I am very upset about my experience yesterday. I called to speak with a woman who knew my father. My father had 5 birds from this place, and passed away last week. I live in Maryland, but made a promise to my dad to care for these birds! The woman put me on hold for ten min to come back and say I need approval from the woman who surrendered them! What?! So a stranger can adopt them but I have to have approval from someone who gave them up to keep my promise to my dad? I understand I would have had to pay for boarding until I arrived in Arizona, but I was more than willing to do so. My dad had a lot of trust in this place and I am so incredibly saddened and disappointed that this is the outcome.
We rescued Mango and had such a wonderful experience with the director Mandy. We will be back for regular grooming appointments and would highly recommend them for all your exotic bird questions and needs.
It is a wonderful, kind shelter. 10/10 would recommend!
The rescue is small and only a few members are there every day to help take care of the birds that have been surrendered. Some birds were surrendered after living in stressful conditions or having an illness, and the rescue does the best with what they have to help the birds recover and find a new home. All staff are unpaid volunteers, and the owner Mandy is very dedicated to keeping the rescue going every day! Some volunteers may seem to keep to themselves, but they are there to help the birds, not be salesmen.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Adoptions: There are two rooms with birds, one room is a boarding service room and is labeled for staff only. The other room has the birds that are up for adoption, and Murphy, the store mascot.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Products: The rescue has toys and food for sale, the proceeds of course go to supplies and food for the birds at the rescue. There are even hand-made toys to brighten up your birds cage and add some interesting textures and shapes for them to play with.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Grooming: Mandy has been running the rescue for a very long time and is experienced with grooming. Shes careful when trimming nails and beaks, and seems to keep good relationships with the gentlefolk that keep coming back--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------When you enter the store, youll be greeted by Mandy. Shes usually busy making calls for products or general rescue maintenance, but she does the best she can to make sure all questions are answered. She keeps an eye out, in case it looks like someone might want help while they are looking around.
I would give it 0 stars if I could. Lady was extremely rude.
I been seeing that a neighbor just leaves their birds outside in the cold, all night, early morning & been reporting it to police,etc..i was given this places #, a supossed bird rescue, called, told the lady the issue,& she just says,ok,pauses, then says they dont rescue birds, then cause potential $ walks in,she rudely says anyway,as im speaking & asks If she can let me go.i just said fine, guess you & no one else really even cares!how cold & calice!obviously this is not a good place to spend $, cause all they care about is $ & not birds or the welfare if birds!
Ive been coming here for many years. This rescue has evolved over the years to better locations each time. I wasnt sure about this newest location but it keeps evolving for the better each time I come here to purchase things. The rescue is clean, the bird cages are clean, the birds always have clean cages, and food containers. The owners are knowledgeable and care deeply about the birds. The volunteers can be hit or miss at times. It can be heartbreaking to see how people have mistreated some of the birds the rescue has received. I would recommend the bird trimming services for nails and beaks. Ive never been disappointed with the trim services or the advice I have received from this place for the care of my parrots. I buy all of my bird food and toys from here. The prices are good, the advice is good and the services are dependable. I appreciate that this rescue is still around and keeps improving.
Not a good place to find a bird if your with your kids or spouse. They only let 1 person in at a time how do they expect families to pick a bird out if you cant look together.. Ridiculous if you ask me will never come here again
Very happy to see a bird rescue here.We get to visit with Murphy and see that he is well taken care of.Have been in about 4-5 times in the past two years and have spent a long time each visit.the owner was always welcoming and friendly to my children and me.Ive only ever had positive experiences buying supplies, getting wing and beak trims for a donation price.Have overheard the owner being extremely helpful with other customers while checking out the adoptable birds and interacting with volunteers.I dont understand all the negative reviews. Seems like vindictiveness.Dont see any problem with a rescue asking a lot of questions about adopting out abandoned animals.if you have a pet bird you know how sensitive they are. They are intelligent and even get their feelings hurt and become depressed.Im sure shes seen enough mistreatment and is rightfully skeptical about who they go home with.Owner probably is trying to avoid dealing with the occasional inevitable flakes.Dont mind paying a little higher price for toys and food because it goes toward the care and feeding of homeless birds.Im a customer who saw negative reviews while I was checking on the hours of operation this morning.People need to get over themselvesthat taking care of helpless things is Noble.
Simply outstanding and remarkable! The owner patiently and thoroughly answered all of our questions - and then some! Said to check back anytime, for anything. Apparently no question - and no bird - is too small to receive their highest level of care and attention.
Words cant describe the wonderful service they provide. These are people who have dedicated their lives to taking care of birds, and they are doing an excellent job. Yes, birds cost money to adopt because, spoiler alert, rent isnt free just because youre a nonprofit. Their prices are as good or better than any bird store in town, and they dont support breeders, only owner surrenders and rescues.Anyone wanting to help out should come volunteer! They are wonderful people doing amazing work, and they can use all the help they can get.
Everyone is always sweet and friendly. I lobe Murphy so much!! Great place for food and toys even if you arent looking for a new friend!!
My daughter and I were looking for a bird to fill the hole in my husband’s life after his mom passed . They talked often... every night and had lots of sparky conversations....The day we walked into this rescue was The Day.... little Lucky,a 5 mo Quaker just arrived and he took right to me and then my daughter... home that night and immediately chose my husband as His Buddy....Mandy and the Vet Dr Sarah at Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic got us all to a great start with our first bird.... Lucky has met all the animals, dog, cat, blind bunny, puppy and all is well, Lucky rules our world
Everyone is friendly. I love the atmosphere and just seeing the birds is a treat. Adoption fee prices are reasonable! Honestly I would recommend adopting from here to anyone. :)
I spent an hour and a half there today and the service was fantastic the people that work and volunteers are so dedicated to these birds. We need more people like this in our world. I thank them for introducing me to several fantastic birds and I fell in love with Jr. A Severe Macaw. I’m hoping to be able to adopt him. 😃 thank you for helping me and answering all my questions.
These people have a simply amazing talent with birds! Giving up a pet is never easy, but seeing my broken-hearted little bird respond so positively to their care gave my heart some peace. Im very grateful to AZ Exotic Bird rescue for that.
Sorry no pictures. I was so excited with all the birds did not think of it. Before I start, I want to give a big thank you to AZ Exotic Bird Rescue for what this place does every day and trying their best to not leave a bird homeless. It is very hard, expensive, time consuming, and a lot of patience to take care of one bird or parrot. So just, imagine 10 or more wow! I am glad that there is a place like Az Bird Rescue willing to take homeless birds. Places like this do not make tons of money and most of the time they are pulling from their own pocket. So please please donate what you can. Parrots live for 20+ years and most are not so lucky to have a forever home. Some people buy parrots and not know what they got into until it is too late (too loud do not know how to train). Owners have life issue where they have to give up the bird or get ill and pass away. If it were not for this place, where would these parrots and birds go?My experience: I went to AZ Exotic Birds looking for a certain species of parrot. I go by the adopt before you decide to buy tactic for all animals I take home. I wanted to see their beautiful Yellow ringneck, which by the way is available for adoption. When I got in, they welcomed me right away and asked what they could help me with. They brought out the ringneck for me. What a great bird she still needs some work and more loving but will come around. The employees sorry horrible with remembering names were all awesome very knowledgeable. If you are thinking about getting a bird stop here first and hangout, it will help and maybe you will find your next feathered friend. All the cages were clean and the ones that needed cleaning were getting ready for cleaning while I was there. All the birds I saw were in great condition and happy. They do provide Nail clipping and Boarding if needed. I really recommend people that read this to visit this place even if you do not own a bird and just want something to do. They have baggies with Almonds that you can purchase right there to give to the bird. Remember the birds appreciate the attention also.AZ Exotic Bird Rescue YOU ROCK!! Keep doing what you are doing
Fabulous owner, who went above and beyond for us....thank you, thank you, thank you for all your patience. Cant wait to meet our bird to join our fur-kids.
This is not a true rescue but a store, where the birds receive poor care and are stressed. Water dishes unfilled, dirty, and lack of vet care. Do not bring your birds here as it is not a true rescue. There are much better places. This appears to be a money driven enterprise, under the guise of a rescue. If you do get a bird from this place, please realize that you will be in fact rescuing the bird from this so-called rescue.
Called this place. The lady mandy who answered the phone was very rude. Very short. Was telling me what to do. And cant do. Like i was a child. We have a great family any animal is blessed with us. Too bad for the bird.
First visit today (4/8/2015) - what a wonderful facility! Took my birdies for grooming. Tyler was very gentle and caring. Although they dont charge for grooming, a donation is certainly appreciated. The staff were very friendly and helpful - gave a tour and explained the different areas. The rescue birds appear to be very well taken care of - designated areas for them to be out of their cages, clean, volunteers to socialize with them - very impressive. It was a great experience...please consider using them for boarding or grooming - all proceeds go towards the care of the rescue birds.
We were researching exotic birds for a pet and called the rescue. They said to come up and learn! We did and for the next year we spent time learning about the birds and helping out where we could. Weve never seen such dedication to an animal as these guys showed to all the birds that came through their doors. GO. If you have questions. GO see them. They are all about educating the public on what it truly means to have a feathered family member. You wont be sorry for having spent time up there. If you are already a bird family, go up there to buy your supplies. Their prices are MUCH cheaper than anywhere else. They have all different types of food, toys, cages, etc. They have an education area where you can watch dvds and read books/articles on birds. They host lots of events where you can ask questions of experts. They do grooming up there. So much there at their new, larger facility. You wont be sorry you went. :)
We went there with the intentions of possibly rescuing a small parrot. At first we were happy with the staff and we hoping to be a part of the rescue efforts they seemed so dedicated to. We were shown a Quaker who was a sweetheart but not quite what we were looking for. When questioning the staff about other possible adoption options it seemed as if their attitudes changed and we started seeing a different side of them. Every question we asked was returned with an answer or look making us feel stupid. When asking about a bird we liked and if we could take it out of its cage, one staff member refused to help, stating she doesnt want to deal with this particular breed and to go talk to some one else. When finally given the okay to interact with the ring neck, another staff member stated, in a snooty voice, that these birds are mean and walked away. We could not believe what she said, there was no attempt to explain the birds demeanor and what it would need as far as care and rehab. As we started walking out, the staff member who previously refused to help told us she refuses to handle the ring necks because she they bite.Im sorry but if you truly are dedicated to these birds, then you run the risk of being bitten and accept those risks. To discourage a customer who was interested in adopting a particular bird does not seem to fit with the stores goals.
This facility is beyond atrocious. The owner, Mandy, is quite rude, and when we brought our bird in for boarding, along with the food we wanted him to be given, Mandy accused my mother of stealing the food when there was only half in the bag and she realized it was not even sold in the store. That should have been a red flag but we disregarded it. I picked my bird up after a week, and found that his feet were quite sore after the grooming we had requested. We had had our bird groomed in other places before, and this never happened, but now my bird topples over and cant stand from pain, with his feet being warm from inflammation. In addition, his beak is agitated, and again, weve had his beak groomed at other facilities before with no issues, and now he is constantly favoring it. This place has no business calling itself a bird rescue with its horrid treatment of both people and birds.
Adopted Bird yeah. We love him much Maddie was knowledgeable and very helpful. We as new bird owners new to parrots learned a lot from Mandy. And now on a beautiful Mexican redhead Amazon. The previous post from Bill Aarons was untrue and I was currently in the store at the time. Mandy was helping me when he was interrupted. He was in an area that was posted for staff only. Were other birds are boarded. He was a very violent man. Raising his voice and storming out when his questions were answered as quickly as he was interrupting.
I don’t get why people are giving this place so much hate. They just wanna help birds! Also they have murphy there for entertainment!! He’s nice and is being treated just fine!! C’mon people!!😡
I adopted squeek and Cisco and I love them both have to work with Cisco on biting but Im glad I was able to adopt instead of buying I will be adopting from here from now on and the staff was great
I agree with Rocky Bird,... This is not a true rescue but a store, where the birds receive poor care and are stressed. Its dirty & overpriced. Be careful when you just walk in, youll be asked all kind of questions by fat woman & youll be watched every step you walk in there like a thief, bad people. When i was looking around, there was a lady who just walked in to give beautiful cockatiel away so that I showed I was interested in the bird. The fat woman came in front of me and asked if I want the cockatiel that will be $100 dollars. I told fat woman that I would give $100 dollars for that lady, not you. You dont even touch the bird yet, why would I pay you $100 bucks then walked out. Bad place, bad people here!
Im not sure why they are still advertising that they are at the Scottsdale Road location. I went past there the other day and the place was cleared out yet they are still advertising birds for adoption. I had some dealings with them some years ago. They were OK, trimmed my parrots claws and I got there too late to pick up my parrot before they closed. I was frantic but I picked her up the next day when they opened and there she was having a good old time with all the parrots. I think. Anyway I did get yelled at for not being there on time (although I tried to explain it was an emergency but they didnt seem to care). I dont know....I always felt like there was something strange going on there although I could never really put my finger on any one thing. Prob me just being over cautious. Anyway when they WERE open and at that location, it was clean, well lit, the birds seemed well fed and werent forced to stay in their cages all day. Maybe this review is a mute point since they are obviously no longer at that location anyway.
The staff were so friendly and were very helpful with getting new toys and items for our bird. We had such a great time talking with the staff and seeing all the birds.
We have been to the AZ Exotic Bird Rescue many times and it is amazing. They have a new location and wow is it great, huge selection of anything you could possibly need for your feathered friends. They have low prices on food and toys for any birds needs. They also do free grooming and offer a variety of classes. The customer service and knowledge of the employees has always been helpful. They now have a bird club and it meets once a month. I learned many things I didnt know at the last one.
We didnt go home with a bird but might soon. The lady we spoke with was very helpful unlike some of the other places we have. Even took the time to sit us down and tell us the positives and the risks involved. Very impressed.
This place is Fantastic!! Tyler is awesome and everyone who works there is a volunteer, and loves these animals so much! Every dollar you spend on food, toys, etc. in the store goes back into care for the birds that are being rehabilitated, or waiting on new homes! And the prices are the absolute lowest in town. So if you need food or toys for your birds, this is the place to shop!! And I was amazed at so many different brands of food that they offer. You need to check this out for your family birds and maybe consider a new member as well!! I know that I have three parrots as I am not allowed 4 but if I was in the market for a rescue, this is the place that I would go!! Clean, Clean, Clean!!Check this store out! Elaine Litke
I have 2 parakeets that have to stay together. I am looking for a good home for them.
I adopted a Macaw from AZ Exotic Bird Rescue and I continue to purchase my bird toys from AZ Exotic Bird Rescue. I love that my money goes towards helping more birds find homes; my three birds love getting new toys to destroy. The Macaw I adopted is my little wood chipper. If anyone needs kindling for their fire, I can help!
They take the time for people to learn the individual bird and for the bird to pick them. I work at a bird rescue and most of the birds from owners that arent compatible or werent able properly take care of an exotic bird. This is going to happen at a bird store.
Amazing little place they always need help there is more birds then volunteers here! Rehoming fee for each bird is not cheap, but this place has to support all of its residence here, expected to pay half of the price that you would from breeder or pet store! An amazing nonprofit place this place is ran by volunteers so dont expect to walk into big Business bird store every dollar spent here goes back to the birds
Lady scolded me once and my daughter once and we were just asking bird questions!.. rude ownerNice to have a exotic bird store close .. but she can go with her mom!.. not me!:)
Nice place. Great prices on toys and accessories. I love that they are helping birds that need homes find a place to live. Only negative was the staff. I have never met Tyler who everyone says in awesome. Too bad because the person I encountered was kind of arrogant, detached and un-helpful.
Went to this place looking for a bird that i would bond with and this staff is not professional and not helpful, they dont know there birds. There scared to even handle certain ones. Highly suggest The Arizona Bird Store, they helped my find the perfect bird for me and my family!
This place is wonderful. Everyone who works here is a volunteer, and loves these animals so much! Every dollar you spend on food, toys, etc. in the store goes back into care for the birds that are being rehabilitated, or waiting on new homes! I adopted my sun conure there, and she is my baby! When you adopt a bird, you get the cage, toys, and the bird who has been cared for for as long as it took until YOU showed up! For the person who said the cost was too high in his review, obviously doesnt know what it takes to be owned and loved by a parrot!!! Please take a moment to check out the store and say hi to some of the beautiful birds there!
Wow. You can just tell this place knows what they are doing. Everyone was so knowledge and you can tell they take amazing care of these poor birds. If you are looking for a bird come here!
I have been doing business with AZ Exotic Bird Rescue for over five years. Their friendly staff go out of their way to answer any questions about how to care for your bird. If they dont know the answer they will do their best to find it. They carry a large line of food, toys, and accessories for your feathered friends and their prices are much lower than regular retail.A few days ago my Indian Ringneck Parrot had an accident and needed emergency care. I didnt know what to do or where to go so I took my little pal to the AZ Exotic Bird Rescue. Tyler immediately dropped what he was doing and referred me to a fantastic avian veterinarian but he also called the Doctor and told him that I was on my way and would probably arrive after hours. Additionallty, Tyler assisted me in finding financing for the emergency procedures and medications without which my little buddy probably wouldnt have survived.I highly recommend AZ Exotic Bird Rescue to anyone who loves birds. They deserve many more than five stars.
It really not a 5 star or a one star place. First of all there are good people who work there and some of the birds are saved from horrendous conditions and rehabilitated. The original place could get very dirty, some of the staff/volunteers are pretty rude, some healthy birds are adopted immediately without any vetting. The money you pay for the adoption fee is absolutely not for profit but everything else is technically for beak cause and the money goes into the owners pocket which is fair for a business and not hidden although many reviewers seemed confused. Some of the profits possibly go back into bird care but not all. I volunteered there for a year and a half (~200 hours) scrubbing the floors and changing paper and water as well as donated some and felt like Tyler and Randall appreciated the help but the owner absolutely did not. The new place is much cleaner and possibly better ran. Watch out for long expired food though.
Mandy runs a place where birds can heal & find new love. She is their savior!
Hi Everyone,To Everyone who hasnt been here in about 3 years. We have moved to 2724 N Scottsdale Rd in Scottsdale. We are between Oak and Thomas and next door to Boston Market. Our hours of operation are 10am - 6pm, 7 days a week. Holidays vary so please call in. We would hate to have you make the trip to find us closed. You can also see updated birds and hours on our Facebook page Az Exotic Bird Rescue. So sorry for all the confusion. We Are Open with all the things you remember best. I hope to see you all soon.
I found AZ Exotic Bird Rescue through an internet search. I have been rescuing and rehabilitating birds for over 20 years. I recently rescued one from a bad situation and after 5 months, I realized my own bird was developing behavioral issues due to the rescue needing more attention. It was a tough decision but I knew the rescue needed to find another home. I called the Exotic Bird Rescue and they agreed to help me out with finding this birdie a new home. I was very impressed when I came into the building and met with Mandy and Curt. They made me feel so comfortable with the decision I had made to bring the bird in. Ive since been back to the rescue several times and met with Tyler and some of the volunteers. The facility is very well put together and its a comforting feeling to know that the birds are well cared for by the staff and volunteers. I would definitely recommend The Az. Exotic Bird Rescue.
We found a 20 yr old cockatiel which was so adorable and affectionate that we had to bring him home. Great place to get a rescue.
Honestly.. Should be shut down for animal abuse or peta should be contacted. Birds look extremely unhealthy and while I was there, I saw a sight worth digging my eyes out over.. These birds cages have not been cleaned in months (atleast thats what it looked like), they are infested with roaches. These poor baby birds are being exposed to diseases that roaches carry and you call yourself a rescue? Disgusting. As well as the lady just sits on her butt and tries to tell you how to take care of your birds.. Honestly lady, youre money hungry and shouldnt be allowed to handle birds. Never bringing my kids back here or myself. Ive seen better treatment to animals done by stupid chain stores like petsmart. Do yourself a favor, close down your shop and give those poor babbies to someone who can actually care for them.
Theyre such amazing people such great things and thees birds have been rehabilitated from bad homes and its just suchas good cause
I recently looked at a scarlet macaw that I plan to purchase. My husband found this place online and we thought that maybe adopting a rescue bird would be a better option, so we stopped in today. When we arrived we were told to go in and take a look. The owner choose to sit in her chair the whole time and every time we asked a question she responded with a negative comment....she was rude and unprofessional. I think I will stick with purchasing a feather baby. I would not recommend this place to any one. I also suggest the owner take customer service classes. Its really sad because we could have given one of these feather babies a good and happy forever home. If your of another race ( hispanic) she will not even acknowledge you.
I got my Cockatiel today and the staff working there were friendly,This place was very affordable compared to pet stores. We will continue to get our bird supplies here!
The birds were very beautiful but you could tell they were really stressed. I was very disappointed with the lady who owns the store she was very disrespectful and rude with very bad customer service.
Really like this place, Im in there over an hour sometimes LOL
The people were rode. The fat white lady
DIRTY & OVERPRICED, if you go in with the intention of adopting prepare to be questioned/interrogated by a rude lady that will stare you up & down! The 🐦 birds look SAD & when you show interests theres a lady here that will tell you off really in a passive aggressive way like she doesnt really want you to ADOPT, kind of like complaining about what you need to do in order to get a bird, it was a really weird experience!!!
MURPHY’S A PRETTY BIRD
Horrible customer service. Lady working there was extreamly rude. I would never adopt from them due to the fact i wouldnt want to deal with the associates!!! If i were able to rate 0 stars i would
WARNING: VERY RUDE owner and not friendly at all. AVIOID. Birds seem pretty stressed out. Not worth entering this place.
Dont have cuttlebones
BEWARE!!!!!!! These people are careless and unprofessional. I am shocked they are still in business! Do yourself a favor and avoid at all cost.
The best place to shop and talk.about birds
Dont shop here they dont care about the birds they are only in it for the money.
SCREW THESE PEOPLE CHANGING PRICES U GUYS SUCK I HATE THIS STORE FORGET YOU!!!!
I went there to adopt a bird, they told its 800 to adopt, but how i should pay if to buy a knew one, the old lady there try to make money while she suppose to make home for the bird .
JAIDENNNN
Awesome people!!!!!
ZERO CUSTOMER SKILLS by the lady that I encountered upon entering. I would never purchase anything from this business as a result of this vile individual. Most of birds appeared to be extremely stressed. This place needs to be inspected by animal control. It appears that they had more birds being boarded than available for adoption. Unfortunately I cant give this place zero stars to match the l personality of the owner.
