Kumon has been a wonderful academic enrichment program for our daughter for the past three years. I truly believe the confidence, skills, and academic commitment she has stems from Kumon. It was the best thing we ever did for her academically. She has far exceeded our expectations and now she has developed a love for math and science because she grasps the concepts so quickly. Thank you to Vanessa and her excellent staff for their encouragement and support for the students!
My 3 boys have been attending Kumon now for several years. I trek from Mill Valley to take my kids to San Rafael twice per week, despite crazy schedules, as a testament to how much this is a priority in our family. What I love about Kumon is that it is the perfect complement to the Common Core curriculum that is practiced at the public schools. They learn math from an entirely different approach, which makes them very strong, confident, fast math learners. They also are exposed to reading topics that they would normally not choose to read, but then learn to appreciate. They have actually asked me to check out the full novel from the library after reading short passages from their Kumon pages. Worksheets are timed, and they learn to not only answer accurately, but quickly. What I also love about Kumon, is that it teaches my kids time management. They have learned to expect that they have to finish their work EVERY DAY, despite sports, schoolwork, etc., so they now independently do their work in between their other commitments. This is an important life skill that I do not feel can be easily taught. The Kumon method is a time-honored approach to learning math and reading, that was started by a teacher in Japan. It is highly successful, but requires a strong commitment. If the kids are not engaged (and supported at home) 100%, then they will not gain any of the benefits of this program. I can honestly say that my children are more confident and smarter learners, directly because of their Kumon experience.
My boys have done the Kumon program for over four years now and it has been a crucial part of their education. It is a great way to help them learn to manage their time on a daily basis. The confidence they have gained in math and reading has been invaluable in their school work. It is a very big commitment, and requires a great deal of support at home, but the rewards are many.
Our son has gone to the San Rafael Kumon for 4 years, the staff is fantastic! Our sons love of math, grades at school and test scores have all increased dramatically. In fact, we told him he could end his programs this year as he is older and he told us HE wanted to continue, he likes the edge it gives him
We worked with Kumon for about six months last year and felt that it was not a good investment. Although my review is unfavorable, I am not writing this to slam them. They were generally nice to deal with, but the Kumon program has a few flaws that I wish I had known earlier. The program is a bit of a black box. You take your kid, your kid disappears into their class area, your kid does whatever they have your kid do, your kid reemerges. You have little to no contact with anyone working with your kid. You are not updated on progress. We went there with the hope of getting our daughter some additional help to keep from falling behind with the concepts that were being taught in class. The Kumon program operates in a parallel universe, so what she was having trouble with in class was not addressed there. So, while less expensive than tutoring in the short run, you are forced to buy into a program that will be more expensive in the long run.Again, people were fairly nice there, but this program was not a good use of time or money for us.
I am very disappointed in the level of service we received from this center. We had heard wonderful reviews of the Kumon program in the East Bay, so decided to try this center. We found the director incompetent at best. When we tried to schedule the orientation, she gave us the wrong date. When we signed up for a placement test and orientation and she failed to show up. When we notified her, instead of apologizing, she blamed us for not receiving the call that it had been rescheduled. and, we were not alone. There were other families, who had arrived for the placement and orientation, who left just as dissatisfied as we were. What a shame...
Our daughter is in 5th grade and has been attending Kumon since the end of Kindergarten. She achieved the G by 4 designation earlier this year and is so proud of her accomplishment (as are we). Not only is she way ahead of her classmates in Math but Kumon has given her amazing confidence and has helped her ability to problem solve. Vanessa and the team in San Rafael are amazing with the students. Thanks Kumon for all you do.
The Kumon math program was an incredibly valuable education for my daughters. What was intended to be a supplemental math program to what they were learning in school, became their primary and most influential math education. The success of the Kumon math program is evidenced by their honed proficiency, efficiency and competency, as well as their ongoing, deep interest in math. Kumon utilizes strategic organization and presentation of math concepts - with increasing difficulty - measured perfectly with sequenced, new concepts and challenges. As a previous math teacher, I fully believe in the Kumon math program. The math confidence that comes as a result of the Kumon program is extraordinary. We love Kumon of San Rafael and Vanessa’s wonderful leadership. We are so grateful for the entire experience.”Kirsten Brockman, Kentfield
Its pretty good not bad
My daughter and son had joined Kumon San Rafael for 5 years. The PROS:1. Self discipline (perseverance, grit, hard work)2. Time management (daily commitment and weekly class attendance, on top of school and extra-curricular activities)3. Self reward (reading comprehension and advancement in writing skills, empowering students to understand a lot more reading materials than their peers)4. Staff members of Kumon San Rafael were all very supportive of the school, Kumon, and after-school life balance. Mrs. Urbanski has bailed our family many times when our kids were struggling to get things done on time due to many reasons, including frequent traveling. I can not count how many times I apologized for missing work or forgetting classes, since we started our tenure at her center. The CONS:IF parents and children expect Kumon San Rafael to help them with advancement in reading and math, but not put the actual effort to manage time and self responsibility, this program will not work. It is not easy to handle the daily chore of reading and writing, when the future reward is invincible. I mean, how can you quantify the ability to read and write skillfully, unless you can understand complex reading materials and able to explain the materials to other people in good writing? But, believe me, time will tell, and you will see it!Our personal experience:Both children did not always love Kumon program like I do, because every time they arrived at the new higher level (e.g. from C to D, or from I to J), they had to struggle in the beginning to learn the new reading skills (e.g. from just reading and extracting information to criticizing the text without prompts). But after 2 months working meticulously and patiently, they always got to understand better why it was difficult in the beginning, and the love was there again. I found it very cute that after the love was back, both kids started making Kumon worksheets for their stuffed toys; and gave the toys advice on how to handle their feelings. I have seen them patting the backs of their toys while their toys pretended to cry for not being able to quickly work on assignments. In conclusion, I think this center is a gem in your childrens learning journey. S/he will learn important and useful skills for their future success in life!
Havent been. looks greet
Bad attendance!!!
