My cat was bleeding from a rupture on her belly. VCA was the only emergency vet closest to me that could take her. They were kind to both me and my cat Angelina, when they came to get her from my car. They were very busy, and when I called to check in they were once again very kind. Unfortunately I had to make the decision to let her cross over the rainbow bridge. They brought her out so my family could say goodbye and let me come in to be with her as she passed. They gave me plenty of time to say my final farewell. As they took her away the wrapped her in her blanket and treated her with such compassion. Its so hard to say goodbye, but the staff at VCA made it just a little bit easier. Thank you all for your kindness and compassion!
I found a kitty on my backyard. He seemed weak and I didnt want to invite it to my house because I was afraid he might pass on something to my pet. So I called VCA and asked them if I could take it there. They said yes, but they neglected to mention that they had an 8 hours wait list. Upon arrival they took my pet right away before any paperwork. They handed me a form asking me to say that the pet wasnt mine, despite the fact that they reassured me over the phone they were not going to give away the cat to the city and they were going to treat it as mine. I said that I was willing to pay for treatment but that I wanted to take the cat with me. They said (before I signed) that it was all a formality and they gave me a second form for pets that you own. Supposedly, it was all part of a transfer process. But after signing the first form they took the kitty from me. I said I wanted to take it with me and they said they could only transfer it to another clinic after speaking with a veterinarian. So I called another clinic. After that they changed their story and said they were not going to allow that either and that the cat now belonged to Oakland Animal Services. These people are very sketchy. Dont trust them, they can take your pets from you.
My 12 year old Schnauzer mix Mia was diagnosed with a heart murmur back in 2019. The previous cardiologist she had been seeing was no longer taking appointments so I went to Google and found this place. From the initial phone call to make the appointment to the day of my appointment, the customer service was excellent. At the time of my appointment you still had to wait in our vehicle but everything is very streamlined. My dog was see by Dr. Woodrow was absolutely amazing! After she examined Mia she called me and went through her findings step by step. I didnt feel rushed or hurried - you can tell she truly cares about her patients and their families. At the end of my appointment I received a folder with the echocardiogram images, and a detailed summary of everything Dr. Woodrow had went over with me. If I could give this establishment 8 stars I would.
I had such a great experience at VCA Bay Area Vet Specialists. I took my dog here for an echocardiogram to figure out the cause of his heart murmur. They were incredibly organized. Theyre still following COVID-19 protocols and have each parking space numbered and come out to your car to retrieve your pet. When they did this, they gave me a print-out of the heart so that I could follow along when the doctor gave me a call to discuss my dogs condition. They explained things in detail and I left having a really good understanding of the heart condition my dog has and symptoms to look out for. Thank you, VCA!
We had to take a cat to be cremated and the staff were compassionate, gentle and professional despite it being in the middle of the night. They took the best care of both us and the animal and we cannot thank them enough.
Dr. Sylvia Funes is a miracle-worker! After finding our 7 lb. chi, Louie, laying in his own urine and unable to get up, I rushed him to BAVS were, under Dr. Funes care, he was put in an oxygen cage for 3 days. The diagnosis was pulmonary hypertension, which is uncurable and progressive. I could tell when he was finally released that Dr. Funes was hopeful but not completely optimistic, but she said Thank you for brining Louie to us! I really enjoyed him! She put him on two medications for life, and I think she felt like that would be only a few more weeks, maybe a couple of months. Well, that was about 5 months ago... and Louie not only has virtually all of his strength and stamina back (he still insists on walking on his own, but I keep an eye out and carry him when I know he needs a little break), but turned 15 today!Thank you, Dr. Funes, for your kindness, compassion, and competence! Because of you, we get to enjoy our Louie for a bit longer!
Silvia Funes saved mine and my dog’s sanity. I adopted this adorable dog a year ago and since I’ve had her she has had constant, explosive, bloody diarrhea. I think I took her to 3 different vets and she had about one appointment a month. No one could figure out what was wrong with her. Appointment after appointment, test after test, medication after medication. It was so bad. She couldn’t have a blanket or bed to sleep on because she would diarrhea on it and it would get all over her… it was crazy. Her nose got all dry and cracked and her fur was dry and corse from the lack of nutrients. My poor dog… finally one vet recommended I see Silvia and she was a life saver. She totally understood how I felt and sympathize with me and cured my dog! My dog ended up having some type of ulcer(s) and we got her on the right antibiotic and now I have a (semi) healthy dog! It’s still a work in progress because her system has been so damaged but it feels like a night and day difference to me. My little dog can even eat normal dog food now instead of the super expensive specialized food. It’s really amazing. Thank you so much Silvia.-Christina and Tikka
THEY MARKED US AS CHECKED OUT WHEN THEY STILL HAD OUR CAT - 2.5 HOURS OF WAITING AFTER PAYING FOR NOTHING - UNACCEPTABLE
We woke up last week to find that our cat Milo couldnt stand or walk and seemed to be in a lot of pain. Terrified and thinking he broke his spine, we rushed him to VCA on Washington Ave and they brought him straight back. It turns out he had an ATE, a life-threatening blood clot that cut off blood supply to his back legs. Milo received amazing care from the cardiologists, emergency vets, and technicians who worked quickly to manage his pain and begin treatment for his condition. Everybody we interacted with was patient, kind, and compassionate and they took the time to make sure we understood what was happening, what Milos prognosis was, and what our options were moving forward. We were never pressured to make a decision and the doctors were all very honest with us about his odds of survival. Id like to especially thank Philip, who works at the front desk. He talked with us about his rescue animals and was a joy to speak with while we were worried about Milo.Milo was admitted to inpatient care for two nights and we were encouraged to visit him as often as we wanted. Any time we came to visit, they brought him to an exam room where we could sit with him for as long as we wanted. Every night there was a cardiologist on staff, she called us at the end of the day to give us an update on his condition. He came home today and is just starting to walk again. Were hoping for the best!I cannot recommend this hospital highly enough. Whether Milo ultimately survives this ordeal or not, I know he is getting the best chance possible and the very best care here. We will be coming back for any emergency we face in the future.
I just want to say THANK YOU TO the Dr. And staff that saved my sweet kittens life after having some head trauma. LIL STEVIE 💖 is so precious,
Terrible management of the place. They told me they were available for urgent care with 2-3 hour wait. I go there and tell me it’s actually 4-6. After waiting for ONE AND A HALF HOURS they told me they couldn’t take my pet. I get it’s sometimes unpredictable but that’s just terrible management. They just didn’t seem to care.
My cat was having some issues and they were able to see him right away. Everyone we dealt with was very kind and thorough throughout the time we were there and even after in getting the proper diet for my cat.Their procedures for handling him during COVID were straightforward and reasonable. We drove up, called them to tell them which spot we were in at parking lot, and everything was done mostly over phone from there.
OMG my dog been baited and reap of by a pit bull in 3 places and they keep him for 5 hr for now saying that is not critical still waiting in they r room please help ...
I have no complaints about the quality of service but clearly there are some pricing differentials because we’re in the Bay Area. But, we knew going in what we were getting into and I can bite my tongue on that issue because at the end of the day my dog is getting better and every service in this part of the state is just designed to gouge you. It’s sadly become a fact of life. What I cannot stomach and am quickly getting tired of is how little respect they seem to have for your time. Look, I chose the treatment and I knew it would take time each visit but I am here no less than 2 hours every single time. Even when they say the appt is going to be “quick.” I work 40 hrs a week and while I can take an hour here or there, today I had to call my kid out of school to sit in their parking lot for 2 hrs for an appt that was supposed to take 45 min and now I am risking missing a super important meeting because they are still not out with my dog. Its making me crazy and I have no idea how i am going to balance my life and continue treating my my dog when every appointment sucks away my entire day. The last time I forgot to turn my car off while I was waiting and my car died. There’s literally nothing I can do but take it.
Ive been here a few times before, I used to have a pretty decent experience. Today Ive been waiting 5+ hours just to try to get a diagnosis on my dog. They are not good at communicating whats going on, how long is going to take, even though they have multiple people at the front desk doing who knows what. I understand that this is an ER, but at least should be considering for people that have been waiting 5+ hours . Were doing X ....were waiting on X .... Im still waiting close to the 6 hours mark. My guess...... there is only one doctor. Now Im close to 7 hours waiting.... There is no staff in the front desk .... People are getting angry
I had to wait over 4hours to get my dog back so that I could come the next day to put him to sleep, it is dark now and I didn’t get to take him to his favorite places because they kept him inside for no reason. I wish this place gets more organize and actually care about what these pets mean to people!
I was grateful that the staff at VCA San Leandro were able to treat my alarmingly ill 16 yr old cat who was having major tummy issues. They were caring, courteous, and responsive while we were there for the 4 hours or so. I declined the proposed diagnostic tests but accepted the immediate treatment plan to ease her discomfort and explained to Renee who informed the doctor that being a senior on a fixed income, a bill for $1600 was out of my reach. Renee agreed that my cats regular vet could do the tests at a lower cost. We left with assurances that I could call with further questions or issues. On the next day, some of her symptoms returned so I called but was told everyone was busy, so I sent an email. Later that evening, I called again and was told that I had declined the treatment plan but could return for another 4 hour wait. As of today, two days later, have yet to hear from them. I had expected much better after visit customer service and am very disappointed. $327.00 is not an inconsequential amount.
Kind, patient, and compassionate. They were upfront about the long wait times, the diagnosis and options, and what the costs would be.
We went in today because our kitten moka was acting strange and unresponsive, as well as hissing when her chest was touched I called and we were told to bring her in right away. The person I spoke to met us at the door and got someone to take a look at her even with how hard Covid is hitting businesses they were very kind and perfesional as well as understanding moka ended up being fine as far as they could tell and told us to monitor and not hesitate to come back if anything was wrong. As a frantic cat mom I appreciated the kindness and assurances I got from them. Thank you
They were kind, communicative, competent, and saved my pup’s life. 5 STARS ⭐️
I am overly impressed with the treatment that my pup and forever friend Xeena received. Dr. Soohoo showed so much love and support to me and Xee until her last breath. When I brought my pup in I was looking for a miracle cure but that wasn’t possible for my girl. Normally you dont bring your pup in to a dermatologist to find out that they have lymphoma cancer but that was the case this time. Her wounds (MRSA) were some of the worst I have seen, she was in such pain and I had tried everything presented. I just want to say I would recommend Dr. Soohoo with complete confidence that she will care for your fur baby like it was her own. Thank you for making a horrible day and situation just a smidge better. I miss Xee everyday, this was my only option and the way we were treated was so special.Just a complete thank you,Carla
Do NOT bring your pets here. They are understaffed, expensive, and extremely disorganized and unprofessional. I unfortunately brought my cat on a Friday night, as he was not able to urinate/use the litter box. Otherwise, he was a young, healthy, and full of life. After 3 traumatic and confusing days, I lost my pet. Throughout the process there was no transparency, overly expensive, and understaffed. It concluded with this hospital LOSING my pets ashes and paw print (and giving me a paw print from another pet- dog instead of cat).1. LACK OF TRANSPARENCY. After dropping him off and being examined, I received a call from the vet confirming he indeed had a urinary blockage. They quickly created an invoice and I paid upfront upwards of $1,500. I EXPLICITLY told the front desk once I paid that I REQUESTED THE VET to CALL me immediately to go over exactly what they were planning to do to my cat before they did anything to him. She said I will pass on the request. She NEVER called back. Two hours later they called me to indicate that my cat had gone into cardiac arrest.2. UNDERSTAFFED. Over the following 36 hours, my cat was comatose. I received 2 calls/day from the attending vet, who after her rounds would give me a status of the cat. At every single touchpoint she indicated that there were over 12 other animals, that they were extremely understaffed, but she was trying her best to stay on top of it all. My sense is that she saw my cat only 2-3 times/day for a quick check. I was not able to see him at any point, due to covid.3. DISORGANIZED. With every call, the prognostic would change, and so would the invoiced charges. I cannot stress enough how DISORGANIZED this hospital is. In the morning vet would provide one new invoice and recommended procedure, the other vet would update that.4. DETACHED AND VERY COLD. After about 36 hours, my cat unfortunately stopped breathing on his own. They called me past midnight and indicated that he was about to pass away. I rushed to the hospital to say goodbye. As I stepped in, the vet repeatedly told me, in a very cold way, he is comatose and suffered brain damage, he might not be able to hear you. Seriously, the lack of compassion from this particular vet was APPALLING. They gave me no more than 15 minutes to say goodbye to my pet. They didnt let my sister come in with me (due to the covid restrictions they only allow one pet owner only for euthanasia).5. UNPROFESSIONAL and RUDE. I moved ahead with paying for the paw print and cremation services. After 3 weeks they called me to pick up his ashes. Turns out that the paw print I received WAS CLEARLY NOT MY PET. A woman named Alexa came out to apologize and explain next steps. She had no answers to my questions: Does this mean that my actual pet paw print was given to another customer? How can you guarantee that these are my pet ashes? how can you be sure my pet ashes were not already given away to another pet owner? She indicated she would put me directly in contact with the crematorium. I pushed back indicating that I did not do business with anyone but VCA, no other third party. And that this was THEIR responsibility. No more than 5 minutes later, her supervisor (Christine) came out to reiterate that they would put me in contact directly with the crematorium. She indicated that this was not their responsibility and that they could not help me as they did not work directly on the cremation process. She also indicated that her colleague felt attacked by me and my questions and that she was not able to support me unless I stopped yelling. I want to emphasize I was neither yelling nor attacking anyone. I was asking direct and rational questions because THEY GAVE ME A DOG PAW PRINT WHEN I HAD A CAT and it was clear they were unsure of the location of my pet ashes. They had zero answers. She continued to interrupt me. The manager did not called the following day, we had to call and inquire at the end of the day. They apologized, and identified the correct ashes. At this point, who knows? The issued a refund for my ashes.
With a few exceptions, we have only ever had to bring our cats here when they suffered from serious illnesses. However, the staff is friendly and reassuring without fail, the care is good, and our experience has been 100% positive. Theyre good about handling nervous animals, which is always a worry for us.I only wish I could do more than leave a good review; the doctors and techs here have seen our animals (and us) through some difficult cases, and though these often do not end happily, the staff has been a great support. Theyre incredibly patient with us when we show up hoping to visit our hospitalized pet at all hours, as well. :P We havent been here since December, but a good review was long overdue.
(Tl;dr at bottom- ABOVE AND BEYOND SERVICE, read for taxidermy options) I took in my beloved Cosco and did not at all expect to be faced with the decision of 4k-6k up front to save him vs. euthanasia. I knew he was weak, I knew he might be dying, but i still didnt expect to be met with that decision... Alternatively, I couldve taken him home to pass but I could not bear to let my furry child suffer like that. Thousands of dollars with still a chance that he wouldnt make it was something I sadly could not afford.... so made the decision, and God it hurts. All of the vet techs/receptionists were extremely comforting, warm, and empathetic. I felt that they genuinely cared about what I was going through which should always be the standard in this practice. Now, I will say, I felt the Doctor herself did not actually care. I cannot speak for the other doctors and I do not know her name... She was mildly sympathetic, but it seemed to be out of practice and not a genuine response. Her approach was very cold and it wouldve angered me had I not been so overcome with grief. But to be a caring and empathetic vet that also has to be the one to put down pets takes an exceptionally strong person which I think is somewhat rare, which is why I wont ding any stars for that. Also, the crematory they worked with wanted to charge $45 for just a lock of hair when what I wanted was a full shave of his hair, which they did not offer. I called BAVS (my dog was still awaiting pick up) and they said they would try their best to get some hair between patients, but he was in the freezer and had to thaw so they couldnt make any promises. I got a call back not even 2 hours later and they said they managed to get some of his hair. Even if it was just a lock, its still something and they didnt charge me for that. I am eternally grateful for them to extend that courtesy to me in such a painful time.Tl;dr- vet techs/receptionists were extremely caring, empathetic, and warm. Actual Dr. was somewhat cold, but thats to be expected. Vet techs went above and beyond to accommodate me in retrieving a lock of my beloved dogs fur. I feel the vet techs/receptionists here truly care about their patients.EDIT- I decided to get my dogs paws preserved. I goofed and didnt call BAVS to hold his body and the crematory picked him up... I am still getting the rest of his body cremated, so after the taxidermist cut his paws I needed to return the rest of his body to be cremated. The crematory would not allow me to return the body directly to them, Id have to go through BAVS. Thankfully, BAVS is willing to accept his body back so it can be picked up by the crematory. These guys have went above and beyond to accommodate me in these troubling times and I am eternally grateful for their service 🙏
During a difficult and heartbreaking time Phillip was a truly kind and compassionate soul ❤ He is a gem. Thank you
They rob you of your money if you dont pay thay talk about your pet dieing
Though at first they promised a 4 hour wait, it was actually about 2.5 hours when we arrived at 10pm. The service was so friendly and assuring. My dog can be fear aggressive and the vet tech Carl was amazing. My dog was as relaxed as he could be— they said no aggression occurred. Also, when the doctor called, she took lots of time explaining and listening. Her tone was so kind and helpful. It makes a big difference when you’re stressed! They did multiple follow up calls to check on our pup in the following week.I definitely recommend this place for quality service. Thank you, SL VCA.
Been here a few times with my pups and they have always been good to us. Staff explains things clearly and are friendly and helpful (even with my pup who isnt a big fan of strangers). One of the visits was for putting my senior pup down after she started having heart failure and they made the process as easy as possible. They are usually really busy, so there will likely be a wait depending on when you head in, but I always feel like my pups are in good hands here so its usually worth it.
I had to put my dear cat Boo down today and BAVS we incredibly compassionate and kind.
Ive used their services several times for our cats. They are prompt and professional, both front of office and back office. The veterinarians explain everything clearly, and discuss next steps and pricing, and have tried hard to make sure they do what they can with what people can afford. My sister is a good veterinarian and they generally agree with her when I compare, so Im confident in them. They dont mind collaborating with her either, which is another sign of a professional.I have been very happy with their services, and highly recommend them.I especially appreciated their courtesy and empathy when I had to bring my little buddy in for the last time.R.I.P Linus Fuzzybutt 2003-2019 And then his lovely sister, R.I.P. Gypsygirl Babycakes 2003-2020😔
My cat was diagnosed with squamous carcinoma in April. I decided to get her four rounds of radiation. Due to COVID closures, the VCA was my only available option to get the treatment. I had to Lyft there from the city, but it was worth it for the caring we both received. My radiation therapist was terrific and I got regular, realistic feedback from Dr. Andres. Overall this is a professional, warm pet clinic. Would recommend it to anyone.
Our 9-year-old Labradoodle woke up on July 3, suddenly in extreme pain. Covid required that we wait outside, and there was pretty long wait, but the staff were courteous, responsive and kind.We returned for additional help 2 weeks later with similarly excellent care, but shorter wait times. We returned 2 weeks after that for a neuro evaluation. We were impressed with the thoroughness, compassionate and detailed care we received.A month later, our dog was up and around, back in his normal character.6 weeks later, while on a 3-week road trip, our dog had an episode. Not as extreme as the first but certainly something. I called VCA at 10pm, asking them to email the medical history to a local vet in Colorado. When we turned up at 8am the next morning, the vet knew the history and was able to provide appropriate care.VCA is wonderful. We appreciate all the work and thoughtfulness.
Friendly knowledabke staff
Good people and docs, outrageous prices, especially for pet drugs. Do not buy your pet prescriptions there. Got some today- 7 pills for almost $50, could have been $14 anywhere else.
The entire staff was caring a supportive during a very difficult time. We lost our beloved Cody after a battle with Lymphoma. Today I received a gift from the staff Another example of the sensitive and caring touch. As painful as losing a pet is, having people around you that are supportive makes it easier. Thank you for your professional and caring care.
We love Dr. Carlson and BAVS staff! Dr. Carlson was the only vet of 4 to accurately diagnose a torn Iliopsoas within 5 minutes of examining my dog. Its been a long road to recovery as the injury was misdiagnosed 1.5 months before meeting Dr. Carlson but Im confident well get there. Will be referring friends and SaR colleagues to BAVS and Dr. Carlson for laparoscopic ovariectomies.
I recommend this place few weeks a come here and ask a question they were very friendly Even the Chico was not a petition here, three weeks later come back and had to do the most hard thing of my life put my baby (puppy)down they were very helpful and very professional all the way. we really appreciate the card they send us back.
COVID Season, what a fun time 😭. Although the initial check in wait took a toll on us, Dr. K, JR & Racquel...(sorry if I get the name wrong ) were so thorough and patient with my 10 month old husky puppy that the afterprocess really went by. You could tell that they were really concerned about my huskys & each animals individual well being for that matter and that each got the time they needed and deserved. The check in during and after the procedure, although lengthy was seemless due to continued check ins to my vehicle (as we had to wait in the car prior to him seeing the actual doctor) . My husky had a corneal ulcer due to damage, which although I figured the same at home, we wouldn’t have had an exact answer and potential solution for the now. So for me, 5 + stars 🙌 thanks team!
Took my injured kitty today. The staff was professional and courteous. A bit pricey but it was an emergency and my regular vet couldn’t see her today so... Dr prescribed antibiotics and pain meds and kitty seems better after the pain med. The facilities were very clean and parking was plentiful. No complaints here!
I can’t give it a full star, unfortunately. 10 days after surgery, my 5 and 1/2 year old dog died... they took ZERO responsibility and kept the 9k... loss of our loved one and broke - slap in the face. Its nice to hear some costumers got a card, especially when the animal fought a disease, mine didnt, just ate grass.
Phillip the Vet tech at the front was amazing. He was kind, helpful, and attentive. Thank you so much for the peace of mind during a stressful time.
I’ve brought my pups here multiple times and the staff is always honest and incredibly friendly. Hope I don’t have to bring them back to the vet but if I do it will be here!
I’ve always had the goal of getting the best health care possible for myself and my pets. I had a marvelous vet but she left the practice before the pandemic. Her new replacement seemed caring. I thought she might be ok. I must say I never met her in person. Unfortunately, ok wasn’t good enough when my little tuxedo boy, Francis, got really sick. By the time the maybe ok vet gave up and referred me to Dr. Funes, I thought he was going to die. He had lost a significant amount of weight and could barely walk. Immediately, Dr. Funes had an idea of what was going on- even though it was uncommon in a young cat who was not overweight. When she called with the test results, she was right. She says she sees this problem once or twice a year. The prognosis would all depend on how he responded to the treatment. I know this is a life long journey.Throughout this journey, Dr. Funes has been an absolute goddess for my cat. I feel totally comfortable with the professional calls she makes for Francis. If she emails to tweak something, I do and this guy with a chronic condition gets better. In all my years, I have never had a medical professional- for me or my cats- to reach out not one but several times to inquire about the patient. This marvelous level of care and dedication is what is so often missing in the human and pet medical systems. Yes, I know I’m thrilled my cat is still alive. And, I think if he passed on, I’d still be thrilled about Dr. Funes and the practice. I think the techs and receptionists are real pros. I have not felt they dropped balls. They get it right. If I was reading this review, I might be thinking San Leandro VCA must charge at least double what other places do. And I find this amazing- I’m paying the same as what I paid at the other place. I never feel like I came out of the previous vet thinking I got my money’s worth. I leave San Leandro VCA - after handing them my credit care- thinking I’m going to go home and write a great review because that place is AWESOME. Dr. Funes is the best vet I’ve ever encountered!
These specialists and all employees were so kind and so thorough in treating our little very sickYorkie . We were so frightened that she would not be home again but after the good and caring treatment she is now home !,Thank you so much ! Our pets become members of the family so we need people like you to help them and us to be happy and know that there are lovely people to reach out to !Blessings to all of youJean
The entire staff was extremely kind and compassionate towards our ill dog and our family. The professional staff explained diagnoses clearly and in simple terms. Thank you!
*This is a review for their night technicians* Dr. Frankel tried to persuade us to keep our pup here for 2 overnight stays at $3,000 for monitoring when in fact all he needed was his vitals checked every 24 hours for 2 days. They were very pushy and guilt tripped us but we insisted on taking him home and bringing him to the testing ourselves. We came back the next day for the kidney check up and their tech, Kristina, was very rude and didn’t seem to know why we were there and tried to tell us they don’t do check ups even though we were instructed to come and had spoken to the front desk over the phone one hour prior. She clearly didn’t bother to check our puppy’s medical records. She took him in and we waited in the lobby while we had to hear our puppy scream crying for 2 hours while in the lobby. Kristina came out and in front of everyone said our dog needed to be muzzled and we should have told them he was violent. I explained to her that he’s been to the same vet hospital at least 12 times for vaccinations in the past 5 months and has always been well behaved. Our 2 groomers also never had any issues with him being violent. I told her he might’ve been scared and traumatized as this was day 2 of blood work and treatments and he was in pain. She rolled her eyes and gave us so much attitude that I was in shock that this woman was allowed to work with animals. She failed to explain to us anything even when we had questions on what to look out for. He had a lump from the fluids they gave him but we didn’t know what it was and had asked her and she said they don’t answer those type of questions and to take him to our vet. THEY CAUSED THE LUMP, why not tell us it was from the fluids so we don’t think our pup has cancer??? Such a terrible place that overcharges, does not communicate with each other or you and that is cold with their 4 legged patients. I will never come back here again nor should you if you love your pet like family. I honestly believe they were rough with our dog as I saw how they behaved in the lobby and can only imagine what happens behind closed doors. I will be going to OakVet animal hospital in Oakland from here on out.
They’re expensive. Pay $110 for an emergency office visit and wait for more than an hour to be evaluated. Why charge $110 for emergency visits if it isn’t treated like an emergency? I should’ve gone to the Berkeley vet instead. An emergency animal hospital that charges fees at emergency rates, but can’t perform the treatments necessary immediately. I had a two hour wait before going into an exam room. Then they couldn’t perform treatment on my dog until maybe 4-5 hours after that because they’re seeing other patients also. Thanks. Because I don’t have to get up and get ready for work at 3:30am working out of the city at 6am.
I cannot speak for the Emergency Hospital, however their Oncology department is top notch! During Christmas time I got the call, my dog had cancer... I was a mess, to say the least. But during my first appointment with their oncology team (I heart Kristen and Dr. Andres!!!) they made me feel so much better. And within months, my baby girl is already on the mend! They are all very sweet and caring, they really do know their stuff, they dont push tests that are not necessary, they are great with the animals and when I had a meltdown and started bawling in their reception area, they helped me through it. I cannot speak highly enough of them. If something befalls your beloved pet, they are in safe, qualified hands here.
Dr.Siedlecki is wonderful, actually the whole Oncology team is a gem, from the front desk to Laura one of the vet techs who was always so cheerful and friendly. When we were first referred to Dr.Siedlecki she had personally returned my call to speak with me about my fur son, Beaus treatment and always returned my calls promptly if I had any further questions. They were all so caring and professional during this extremely difficult time, Beau has been diagnosed with terminal cancer and we are very blessed to have a team of specialist treat us and Beau, a130 pound Mastiff like family.
We were met with two staff and a gurney when we brought our 12 year old, nearly 90lb Yellow Lab mix who had collasped at home and struggled to bear weight. He was taken to a room and as we waited, were immediately impressed by the professionalism and hospitality. Weve had our share of experiences at human Emergency Rooms and were extremely satisfied and at peace he was receiving the same care and attention. Hes home recovering and on the mend, we couldnt be happier.
I am very pleased. My little poodle Bubbles is up in years and the staff is always so kind to her and paying her extra attention which she loves. Her doctor is very knowledgeable and answerd my questions. She never makes me feel like she’s tryong to rush me out, I really believe they understand that our animals are like children to us. Plus I love care club. If you are ona tight budget this works great. You make a monthly payment and itCovers so many things like officeVisits, shots, X-rays, blood work. One plan even covers dental. So when I take her in I don’t have to worryAbout coming up with several hinders dollars for the visit. The office staff is very friendly and helpful
Waited for 4 hours on my first visit and it wasnt very crowded. 730$ later nothing had been resolved. I dont feel my cat got the appropriate care and they started big and worked their way back wards. Second visit went to pick up a medicated and waited almost another hour. Because of course it wasnt ready as promised. I will NEVER go back.
Yesterday I had a very bad experience in this place, I took my puppy because he has a hernia and he cant have a bath and he couldnt have a pee, and decided to take him to this place and to my biggest surprise that they didnt do anything to him neither water nor food They gave my dog ... they only care about the money and the service they charge is very bad. They told me that I need surgery and that the cost would cost me 7k, but they tell you that they dont care about your feelings ... I dont think I was coming back to this place. 👎👎👎👎
I wish there was more stars to give you! David, Afia,Phillip, Kim, Michael, both assistants and Doctors that SAVED my Blue for the second time!! Thank you for being respectful, polite and understanding as it is a very sad and scary situation to walk into the emergency room with an injured pet. Great service, VERY CARING and compassionate people!
Theyll do the very best that they can to help you and your furry family member. Theyll also be completely transparent with you re. the prognosis and costs for tests and treatment. I trust them completely.
Wait...1 1/2 hour to be seen. Wait 1/2 hour in a room for the vet. Told to go home an d wait for 2 to 3 hours for the procedure and recovery (they will call). Four hours later I called and was told they were just starting the procedure. They called back one hour later and said to come 15 minutes later. (I guess recovery times must vary). Went in 20 minutes later. It has been 40 minutes and Im still here. Thanks for ruining my Friday. I wont be back. Unless I need to read a book in a semi quiet place. But, theyll probably charge me for WAITING.
Outstanding care in every way, was there on 12/31;for an emergency. I do not live in the area and have a regular vet, they took care of my pup like she was one of there own, ~45 min wait, Berkeley was 4+hours. The staff & physician provided 2 suggestions - course of treatment was up to us. Pet emergencies are expensive, fees were fair & reasonable, having a pet is a responsability, if an emergency is a hardship it may be best to re-think ownership. I highly recommend.
DR. WOODDRUFF is amazing! She has been a wonderful cardiologist for my dogs DCM. This hospital is very compassionate and caring with a genuine love of their patients.
But I called for help for my animal all they cared about was money $110 for an office visit and then on top of that they want more and all they care about is the money they dont care about our animals
Good experience, certainly better than what I had at the VCA in in San Mateo. Even though this is much farther away from my house, Id rather go to this location (or the one in SF on Alabama street).
I took a tiny stray kitten (maybe about 2-3 weeks old) to VCA on October 8th for care. The kitten had been abandoned but he was doing very well, but had some small problems with opening his eyes. I took care of the kitten for about 24 hours before VCA was recommended, so I took him there because I was told he would be in good hands. However, when I called back on October 11th to check on the kitten I was given the wrong inventory number and the misinformation that the kitten had been transferred to Oakland Animal Services (OAS). When I checked with OAS, they informed that there was no kitten with that inventory number, so I called back to VCA and they again told me that it was the correct number that I had been given. When I finally went back to VCA on October 20th to deal with this matter in person, the clerk told me that she was the person that gave me the wrong inventory number, and that number was actually for a dog! After waiting about 10 minutes, the clerk had tears in her eyes when she told me that they had euthanized the kitten because he allegedly had maggots on his legs and they helped him pass away! This is COMPLETE LIE. This kitten was doing well and could have been cleaned up and saved, if there were any so-called maggots at all. There were NO signs of irrigation or infection on this kitten. It is obvious that VCA had no interest in caring for this small kitten, and euthanization was the cruel and quick way to get rid of this kitten. Beware!
The excellent quality of medical care and the expressions of concern and compassion from EVERYONE I interacted with was outstanding. I cannot say enough about the professionalism of the surgeon, the internal medicine and critical care vets, the anesthesiology tech, the staff who handled my appointments and billing and even the front desk staff member who provided me with training on their lobby coffee machine. I think VCA BVAS hires outstanding, dedicated and incredibly kind veterinarians and staff, and I am deeply grateful for their collective care and attention to my beloved cat, who used to have a full 9 lives, and now I think may have only 4 or 5 to go....I will take this cat and all future cats to BVAS for care, no second thoughts about it. Thank you again.
They are all about making money, immediately recommend X-rays, blood, quote $1500
Amelia my Shepherd had a cancerous grouth on her side. After diagnosis and lab work, she was operated, ugly tumor removed and went back home a happy dog 🐶. It was not cheap, bit for the size of this clinic, I can understand their prices.
I came through the doors in a frantic state freaking out about my pit bulls condition after he ate something toxic. The staff was more than comforting and helpful. They helped me with a payment option and really went out of their way to keep my dude alive. Hes home now and I couldnt be happier with my experience here. And 24 hours is crucial. Thank you so much.
Dr. Woodruff and Alyse ( I thought she pronounced it Lisa but I see it written as Alyse. Sorry for not being accurate) were really nice. Front desk staff were friendly too.Dr. Woodruff was really helpful and took excellent time to explain everything to me about my cat and I was so thankful for the written version of everything she said as well. I was pretty impressed with how quickly they came up with the notes (not sure how long the ultrasound took versus the note taking while I waited, but still) I love that that probably meant they had some pre-set note template at the ready since they cared to give this information to me; I really appreciate it.:( I could tell she cared and hoped my cat had nothing just as much as I did. Also thanks for noticing my face I guess when I had a I think I have a question face! Aha. Sorry I had to cry. :( I just worry and I love my cat lots and I wish she was perfectly healthy. I do want to get acquainted with the Dublin SAGE Cardiologist just because theyre literally walking distance from where I live (just booked months out...!) instead of a 20 minute Lyft ride (as my husband and I share one car and juggle work schedules), but I do want to see Dr. Woodruff again so I am torn. But thank you so much for todays visit.
I took my dog in with puncture wounds in his neck. They took us in right away. knowledgeable and price was fair for everything they had to do. I would recommend this place to all my family and friends.
I will never forget the day they almost killed my cat...when people say this place is only concerned about money ITS NOT A LIE. I took my cat here because it was after hours and he had been very sick they gave me to options for treatment prior to even diagnosis. No recommendations...more like pick a package to save your cats life good luck. I choose to give treatment for a illness that was not diagnosed...my fault for not asking more question my cat got worse after medication. I took him home and he went into shock. We went back in they recommended we put him to sleep. His body look life less...I had called another vet and they recommended pedialit because he has been vomiting. He may be really dehydrated. Spoke to the supervisor we were upset that the medication made my cat worse. We asked him why a proper diagnosis wasnt done prior to recommendations. We wanted to know why they offered this medication before finding the problem. He said well you guys dont have the money so it shouldnt matter anyway. Wow we couldnt believe that was his response. I believe when they convinced me to sign papers to put my cat down they thought it was another cat...they said hes not gonna make it and I ask to see him right before they almost convinced me to put him down (for free?.. they wouldnt charge me????l) they bring him in the room and hes very much alive meows at me ....so I ask the lady o thought you said he wasnt responding. She said oh I got confused that was another cat....THIS IS THE WORST PLACE YOU CAN TAKE YOUR BELOVED PET.. THEY ARE THE ONLY LOCAL PLACE WITH A SURGEON IF YOU CAN TAKE THE LONGER DRIVE DONT COME HERE THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY NOT YOIR FAMILY PET...THIS IS SO SAD!
My 7 year old Chessie became very sick on March 10, 2016. She wasnt eating, was lethargic and I knew she had a fever. I took her down that night and the staff was fabulous. They took her in the back right away and told me her vitals we good but that she was running a fever. Dr. Kristen Danielson came in to see me and was wonderful. We ran blood and did x-rays and everything looked good. They suggested I keep her overnight so she could receive fluids and antibiotics. The next morning I received a call saying her fever had broken early that morning. Dr. Kristin Manning was going to do an ultra sound to make sure there wasnt anything else going on. Later that afternoon, Dr. Manning called to say everything looked good-her fever was still down and she was eating and looking more like herself. The tests are expensive but you have to do them in order to rule everything out. Both doctors were great at explaining everything to me.
Dr. Carlson did knee surgery on my 7yr old Labrador (a sports injury). She gave more attention to us than either my dog or I deserved. And the pooch made a 100% recovery and has many great years ahead of him.
Ridiculous place. Staffs were nice and polite, area seems clean and welcoming, but here comes the fact: If you bring your dog in for emergency, dont expect to get him/her out within a hour or two or three. ITS GOING TO TAKE SEVERAL HOURS. Thats the answer I get every time I call to check on my dog. It seems like the vet like to work on the expensive cases first and if your dog is not bleeding to death they will just leave it in the kennel and let you wait. Oh yes, of course you have to PAY FIRST. And you still have to wait.
We had to take our Rotty here after a subpar pet hospital released him with no instructions. We had to put him down but the staff here was exceptional. They supported us and gave us options.
Caring staff makes it easy to do business
I first came to the VCA on a recommendation because our cat was diagnosed with a severe heart condition. Doctor Woodruff was kind And to the point with our medical and financial need. Unfortunately we had to come back Saturday evening for emergency because our cat was in distress. It was apparent he had thrown a blood clot and his time was short. The entire staff on the night of December 22nd was amazing.I especially want to give my gratitude to Rachel who is there with him the entire time and comforted me when I had to make the final decision to let him go. She made the transition of having to say good bye less painful.Your compassion and care will be forever engrained in my heart.
Thank you all so much for taking great care of Santana yesterday. It never ceases to amaze and alarm me how the young take over for the old. Sometimes even in our view of violence. Santana is doing well and the young one is (to me anyway) hasnt left her side since she arrived home last night. Remorse maybe. We can only guess.
Love love love these folks. Very caring. They helped me with three dogs over the last two years: one bee sting in a nose, one ruptured disk in a back, one pup with Panosteitis and one cremation for a lost soul. The team is always sensitive and prompt in their service. Kind, smart people. One needs to improve area is information management. They lack a central VCA info repository and also lack a client portal to access your pets records. (The various VCAs cant see each other records - was travelling and we needed treatment in Sacramento).
This was a really tough review to make, because the oncology department was so very nice to my dog and I. We came in for a second opinion on a mass my dog has and we had a wonderful consultation that ended in a diagnostic plan and a treatment plan.Unfortunately, when it came to the surgical estimate, they were unwilling to budge at all. I had an invoice from my normal vet for him to do the same procedure and I knew that a procedure here would be quite a bit more because the surgeons here are trained specifically in these types of procedures. I went over the invoice they gave me and noticed a lot of nice to have type of treatment. (Staying for a day and a half after the surgery and the costs that not only come with the stay cost but with the meds and fluids for the whole time, CRI infusion, and the more expensive versions of pain medications, antibiotics, etc). I spoke to them and they refused to go with any of the more budget friendly of any of these options, with the excuse that it is more expensive because she is board certified. I saw the part of the invoice that was for the surgeons time and I was fine with that added cost, what I wasnt fine with was the platinum additions when I can only afford budget or silver additions.I would love if they would actually work with me on this, but so far they are refusing to concede a single recommendation. Can this stop being about getting more money out of us and instead be about helping my dog for just a little less than they are asking for? Im only trying to get 10-20% off of the price by reducing the nice to have items down to what is actually NEEDED.
Like many of the reviews here, it is a bit expensive but like the name says, its a Veterinary Specialist and Emergency Hospital open twenty four seven . The service means top notch vet professionals on site to handle your pet, family member, in a crisis situation. How would we feel if the low cost option ment BAVS didnt exist, then no price is too great to pay. When we carry our best friend in at 3 AM, be glad the door opens to provide the critical service needed. I am.
Having multiple dogs and running a dog rescue group, I am frequently here. They have great specialists and emergency care. I highly recommend this place.
I found a cat in the street in Oakland near my house he was struggling because he got hit by a car back legs was not working as he cried out for me I could only stop my busy life and help they took the cat in treated the cat and put out alerts that the cat was hurt and missing they are awesome and they rock I will be donating to them as this is a place that do what they say care😎❤️
Im taking care of my friends Boston Terrier, Peanut, this week. Peanut had an allergic reaction (possibly a bee sting) and I took her in to BAVS in San Leandro. We had the good fortune to see Dr. Emily Kupprion, who was caring and skillful. I was grateful for the good care we received here. I thought the charges were reasonable. The front desk staff and the vet techs were excellent, too.
These people are a class act, kind, compassionate, and skilled. They made the whole process of emergency uthinasia for my dog as smooth as it could be. Highly recomemded!!!
They took great care of my cat! They were able to pinpoint exactly what was wrong with him. Staff was very nice and the doctor explaind everythin completely! And the reason they have the brochures out is because they dont want you to write your pet off because of funds. They want to help you and give you the option of payments.
I am very disappointed in Staff Veterinarian Koko Shishida, and do not recommend her.I took my maltase Chihuahua to VCA Hospital to examine her eardrum, which I believed had a foxtail inside. After examining my pup, Dr. Shishida agreed that she also believed there was a foxtail insider my pups ear and recommended that she go under general anesthesia to have it removed. During this procedure, Dr. Shishida was not able to remove the foxtail, but rather ruptured my dogs eardrum. She (what seemed to be authentically at the time) apologized and said she felt really bad that she ultimately left us with an unsuccessful and worse outcome. She gave my dog antibiotics and pain medicine and ensured us that if my dog continued to have problems wither her ear, she would do the procedure again, once the swelling had gone down, free of charge.A few weeks later, I called VCA Hospital to schedule an appointment to try the procedure once again. My pup has since had two follow-up appointments with her normal vet to make sure the ear is healing correctly. At the second appointment to our normal vet, our vet agreed that it was time to put my pup under general anesthesia once again to remove what looks like a foxtail surrounded by lots of ear wax and dark excess. I explained what Koko Shishida had said about doing the follow-up procedure free of charge, so went on to call VCA.However, even though the VCA Hospital staff member on the phone confirmed from my pups medical record that Staff Veterinarian Koko Shishida promised to perform the procedure again free of charge - when the staff member went in the back room to ask her, Shishida informed them that it has been too long and she will no longer do it free of charge. This is extremely frustrating: 1) If this were the case, I would have had my normal vet take care of it. 2) Koko Shishida has wasted my time, and created false expectations of how she would/can support my puppys recovery. Maybe the other reviews are right, and VCA is just concerned about money.
Took my dog in, test came out negative twice but they still diagnose Parvo. The nurse that explained the home treatment was more helpful then the actual emergency vet. They are very expensive the care for my puppy to stay would be 5,231 and to care for him at home with the meds and IV cost 1,034. I now know the local SPCA would of been cheaper and keep my pup there for a lower cost. I was told they would run test on his blood and they would call me with results. I called twice and was told someone would call me back. I called the third time and was told they did not do any test.
I took my puppy of 3 months in today. The receptionist was extremely rude and unwelcoming. They had me wait outside the emergency room for service after about an hour he was allowed in we were checked into a room. The vet barely took a glance on him and said he didnt know what my pup could have and he hadnt seen a dog w anything similar. After about another 30 mins we had a tech come in w a estimate of the total care which was extremely over priced. We finally paid and left the facility with the same concerns. My pup wasnt treated nor given proper care. I wouldnt reccommend at all waited for about 3 hrs for nothing.
Exorbitant and Unreasonable Pre-Payments - Highway Robbery!I just called up to let the VCA know I was bringing in my cat who has not eaten well in several days, and as if to deter me from giving timely care to my animal they immediately informed me that I would be responsible for forking out a $600 pre-payment based on the doctors determination at the time of a $110 exam that my cat was in critical condition, so she could be stabilized. When I questioned how they could determine over the phone if my animal would need as much as $600 worth of treatment - even at twice the cost of a normal veterinarian, which is an expected mark-up for an emergency clinic - and asked if I would be charged a flat $600 cost for ANY amount of treatment necessary, the uncooperative and argumentative receptionist would not waiver the $600 pre-payment cost to treat my cat if determined she was in critical condition. As I told her, demanding that kind of payment up front for what might be only $200 or $300 worth of actual costs is larceny. I will travel to the South Bay or out of my way to avoid this once wonderful but clearly quickly declining facility.
Dr. Kristin Manning is wonderful! She saved my 14 year old dogs life and diagnosed him with cushings disease. Hes now doing great and back to playing fetch at the age of 14! Special thanks to the internal medicine team at BAVS!
My dog had blood in his stool. The service here was courteous and friendly. I was given choices for treatment plans. I felt the pricing was fair. No pressure to do anything. Would come here again.
They are so nice and professional!!! They make a difficult experience with a pet easier to handle. Thank you!!!
Staff was very compassionate & forthcoming during a difficult time. Thank you!!
If you want your pet to live do not bring it to this place. Dr. Noknurmura pushed so heavily to euthanize our beloved pet, and did not try to attempt to save her. Which we were referred by Banfield San Leandro which is another terrible clinic for your pet. Neither had the bests interest for the owner nor pet. The staff was nice however, you will be pulling out of pocket to save a dog in which the Vets are pushing euthanizing so readily.
👍🏼excellent care.thank you very for try to save my Chico & for the cards & concern, I would recommend you to anyone looking for a pet hospital !
I like it here they help alot with my dog with cancer. She past way already but they help me alot on my hard moments ty.
My Beloved Brownee died at my house and I went here at 1am. Two nurses came out with all their gear on to see if there was anything else they could do. I said she had passed hours earlier. Now, this is the first time I had a doggie so this was the first time I dealt with a death. The nurses were very comforting and then came out with a gurney and strapped her in it and took her in the building. I didnt know but they have private cremation services you could pay for etc... We were taken in to the consult room after to view all the items they have in the cabinet. The lady said you could pick out anything in the cabinet you want. The price was very reasonable, $267.00. It covered the cremation, the urn, the plaque with the writing and the pick up and delivery and I emailed the photo I wanted on the urn of my beloved Brownee. Everyone was so caring and comforting that I wish they would be like this for humans. A lot of my coworkers never knew about this place for the passing of their animals. I have been telling everyone that when the time comes for your animal to go to that big park in the sky. When Brownee was brought back to VCA they called us and we went down to pick her up. After more paperwork to confirm the pick up they brought out the urn in a beautiful velvet bag. They again said their sincere apologies and we sat out in the car to review everything. We got a certificate with the urn, almost like a death certificate. It was so overwhelming we sat in the car and had a private service right there. It was so emotional and perfect, it couldnt get any better then that. It has been a couple weeks now and I recently received a lovely sympathy card from the entire staff including the Doctors which just added that special touch. It has made the healing process very special and shows that they truly care. My Brownee was well taken care of professionally and with sincere regrets from the staff. I will always remember how they handled her and our feelings during the weakest and saddest time of our lives. Thank you VCA for making this closure very special. My MooMoo Brownee Oct. 2002- April 2015. U will alwayz be remembered & missed.
Very unprofessional. I did not like the atmosphere or the emphasis on money over all. First off I find it offensive that brochures for payment plans are displayed very visibly. I also resent that the doctor I spoke with (on a referral from Alameda Pet Hospital who are super) insulted my intelligence and basically lied and fed me misinformation. She insisted on referring to my dogs tumor as the cancer. She did this over and over again even after I pointed out the misuse of terminology. To clarify a benign tumor is just a tumor. Growth or polyp are often used terminology. A malignant tumor which spreads or metastasizes is a cancer. Such as lung cancer, breast cancer, etc.At this point in my dogs treatment, the prior vets opinion was that it has not spread and is not cancer, but a large benign tumor that is beyond his ability to surgically remove. Xrays confirmed this. The VCA people wanted to do sonograms then surgery then chemotherapy just in case there is any cancer we cant see. I paid $150 for the privilege of being talked to like I am an idiot.I have several family members that I saw through to the endstages of their cancer illness. I also have had several pets that have gone through the same. So I know of what I speak. They may act like they care about your animal, but all they care about is your money. Go anyplace else. This place will milk you for whatever you are worth than offer a payment plan (credit approval required of course). There is a special place in hell for those that profit from misery and prey on sympathy.I would like to point out that had I know I was being referred to a VCA franchise I would never have followed through with an appointment. I have had prior negatve experiences with VCA in other locations. They are all profit driven and merciless. Former employees have told me shocking stories. I think it is telling that they call themselves Bay Area Veterinary Specialists and de-emphasize the VCA part of their name now. They are well aware of the bad rep they have.
Provide care for sick or injured animals.
YOUR STAFF NATASHA IS RUDE.
Great hospital unfortunately if you dont have money or good credit theres no real reason to bring your animal here I understand that most people are broke with bad credit so they probably have to draw the line but no real compassion unless you are a paying customer not that being broke is excuse but emergencies happen
