In late May 2021, we enjoyed our first sushi dinner since the beginning of the pandemic at Live Sushi. We were impressed by the fresh quality of the fish served here, the good service, and reasonable prices. An East Coast guest loved it too and promised to dine here on her next visit to San Francisco.
A fantastic option for sushi delivery! Started out with a beautiful poke salad and some simple but well executed rolls. The fried crab was still crispy and delicious. The ribs were perfectly cooked and still tender. The highlight was the hamachi kama. A big beautiful piece of fish done really well. Price wise, it’s what to be expected but worth it. Two sushi’s up 🍣🍣
Great textures and fresh fish with different hand rolls and apps. Service is very attentive and good sake selections
This place is actually really bomb. The fish was super fresh, and the Ramen was just such great quality. I am writing it four stars though because they put literally like three teeny tiny pieces of chicken in it.
Waitress are super nice and they are very prompt! Food is fresh.
Fantastic food, fantastic prices. Extremely fast service. You will not get sushi and nigiri of this quality in the Mission.Udon here is also top notch, full of flavor and not water down like many Japanese restaurants in the US
Quality food for cheaper. Get the seasonal chirashi for a good deal.
Good vegetarian options - more than just your typical veggie roll! Bento lunch combos are great too
Our waiter was weird and unfriendly. Food was way too expensive for the portions and quality you’re given. Not a horrible place but not one I would send my money on. Go to a different place, it’s not worth it.
We stumbled upon this sushi restaurant after completing a brewery tour at Anchor Steam and were so happy that we did! Live Sushi Bar offers a variety of classic rolls and dishes, but also had some more interesting & unique options (like live search urchent) for the adventurous eaters in our group. I personally was thrilled to see the Bento Box options on the menu as I always love getting variety when dining out.
A charming Sushi place which is great for lunch! We went with a large group and this place was quick in service. They took our orders fast and the food came out quick. The lunch Bento boxes provide a good amount of food with plenty of options which caters to almost everyone. Every I ate was delicious, especially the vegetable Gyoza. Would recommend and will come back here again!
Some of the items are simply exquisite. Tonight I ordered the Live Sushi, which is a combination omakase light, sashimi and a spicy tuna roll. The server asked if I wanted to upgrade to the seasonal fresh fish, and the 8$ was a bargain. The nigiri was just melt in your mouth perfection. The hamachi and butterfish were two of the outstanding pieces. The sashimi turned out to be more white fish so it was great. The spicy tuna roll was also very good. Rock star perfect in my book. We also got some Nabeyaki udon which was just ok. The bento box with chicken teriyaki and tempura was very good, the chicken moist and flavorful and the tempura was light and crunchy, not greasy. Really tasty. We also grabbed a dragon roll and spider roll, both very tasty. Overall a great experience and will be back for more.
They have some interesting menu items like the “scallop mini burger” but overall my experience here was mixed. The spider roll portion was tiny for the price and it was put together with an unusual combination of terrible ingredients. The nigiri is also very expensive for the portion size and the quality was only adequate, for that price I’d expect better. Finally, the second time I ordered delivery the order wasn’t ready when promised, and the delivery person had to wait 30 minutes at the restaurant until it was ready. I will not be ordering from here again.
Quality fish, and a mix of classic and modern dishes. The Bento boxes are fantastic value and always yummy!
Good Japanese staples with solid service in a cute space.
Ordered food for take-out. Great sushi and decent proportions.
After eating sushi for many years I would categorize sushi restaurants into 3 main categories. 1) very high end - $200/person or more, 2) nice $70-200/person, 1) budget
Great place for 🍣
Consistently excellent food. Youre missing out if you dont order some things that arent sushi. I always get the hamachi kama.
Pro: service is goodCon: Worst sushi I’ve had in SF unfortunately
The sushi was amazing and the service was very good. We ordered six rolls. Our favorite by far was the spider roll. The way they seasoned the soft shelled crab set this roll on top. We will definitely be back next time ordering two of the spider rolls! The price was about average for sushi by the roll.
Affordable, fresh, and delicious! Servings were a bit small but I shared three rolls with one other person and it was just right!
This place does a very good job.
Pretty good restaurant considering how centrally located it is in a tourist destination. Brought my visiting family here to visit Pier 39 and enjoy some fresh seafood. The dining experience is absolutely superb. Not to mention the wonderful views with their huge windows looking out to the San Francisco water front. My family was so happy with the food and the ambiance.
Not fresh, not tasty. Bad experience for almost $200 worth of dinner and not ever going back to this place. Not reccomended. Not one sushi roll stood out and made us want to come back
They were soooo No sour cream ;>)
I cant even begin to describe the sushi I experienced here. Definitely high quality with unique combinations. Cant wait to come back with my girlfriend. We at the Toro sushi and it was mind blowing. There service was also very good and they accommodated our party of 5 very well on a busy Friday night.
The staff is consistent and always checks up on our or make rounds. Definitely feel remembered and not forgotten. Not only is the food impressive, but so is the service. I tried a chef special oyster, and it was definitely one of the better ones Ive ever had.
Such great food! We sat at the sushi bar and our chef Johnny was excellent. Really enjoyed the crab Napoleon appetizer, the sushi was fresh and the rolls were a nice balance of precision and artistry. An intimate place with great staff and attention detail. Any time were in Potrero Hill were going to Live Sushi.
The best sushi in town for the bucks. Friendly staff and fresh seasonal fish. Get the seasonal upgrade to the live sushi combo, it’s well worth it.
Great spot to get something when in a hurry. The service is swift, pricing is convenient, awesome character. I highly recommend this spot.
Attendant minute order still waiting half hour later. Weird attitude and no estimated time on it being readying
Unpretentious Potrero Hill sushi spot with solidly good sushi and booze at reasonable prices. Probably one of my favorite spots for value and taste.
Fantastic place to go with a small group. The food is delicious and they offer a variety of terms that can be shared very easily. We got a seafood combination with a selection of Japanese fish, it was well worth it to have my sushi repertoire expanded.
They do have great taste of sushi but their cashier rudest lady
I come here regularly.Food: awesome, fresh sushi always. Decent prices.Service: consistent good service. I love that you can make reservations.Parking: generally easy to find parking nearby.Decor: dim lighting. Good for dates and small groups
This place doesn’t look much from the street but the quality of their sushi is beyond amazing. I love their scallop slider and the sushi combo plate. Wait staff are attentive and friendly. Highly recommend this place for good quality sushi.
Ive dined here many times and have always had good quality fish, sushi, and service. Theres a large selection of rolls - more American than traditional style. The menu has a good selection of other more traditional dishes as well. A more casual place and I always feel the bathrooms could use a clean. Overall solid restaurant that has become one of my go-tos for good sushi at a reasonable price.
Ok so this is for the new just opened incarnation of Big Rec and its pretty damn awesome.Great revamp of the interior, nice fresh but chill vibe. Delicious burgers for under $10 (sweet)... soft serve ice-cream for the treats. Every beer you probably want... and great guys running the joint. Go there. Its what the block totally needed... a local for locals. Nice one.
One of my preferred spots to eat. fantastic location, well kept, and excellent service. I highly recommend them!
Fish was good and a pretty good value. I had the dinner bento box and the chef’s fish selection was excellent. Sushi chefs were also somewhat entertaining when people were buying them sake. Fun night.
Delicious rolls, reasonable prices, private and ambient atmosphere, friendly staff, and quick service. Whats more to want?
Yummy food
Was surprisingly disappointed in this sushi. The fish was great quality (Friday night) but the rice was falling apart and grainy. Also the imitation crab ruined the roll. Also the sea bass was rubbery. Really upset that this place was not better.
Love the bento box options here. Really awesome service too.Edit:Changed my rating from a 5 star to a 3 star because the service seems to be getting worse and worse. I had a reservation for three, got sat probably 10 minutes after our reservation (no worries, it was a busy night and they needed to buss the table). However, when we were sat, it took probably another 15 minutes for anyone to help us. When our server showed up, she seemed really overwhelmed and really surprised to have been sat another table. Another waitress was helping her out, and she was very short with us and overall rude despite us being understanding and polite about the wait. The hostess was very nice and tried helping us out as well. Food was great as usual.
Just outside of hipster mayhem, this place continues to serve reliably solid sushi at fair prices. No streaming Anime, no music. Nearly always nearly full, but not lines out of the door. The mackeral eaten raw, then deep fried skeleton for part two is a cool signature.
I sat down and was handed a menu that looked like it had been chewed up and spit out (literal chunks ripped off the menu stained with a multitude of god knows what in colors). It was covered in old food and that was enough to get up and leave. I had tried this place once before and the selection was hard to choose from as it was mostly sauce heavy or deep fried selections. The prices are way higher than they should be for this menu and quality. This place needs to clean itself up before Id be willing to go back. Its filthy.
One of the few affordable sushi places in SF. I have no idea if its good; my palette might as well be a sock.
Quality soosh, decent service, usually no wait, and prices are reasonable enough. The Chef Roll (with that wagyu) is pretty pricey, but very good. Definitely worth trying.
I went there last night and had the Sapporo Ramen: it was the most delicious in the whole city. So tasteful and the broth is unbelievable . The stuff there is very friendly and the food came out fast.I highly recommend this place for any Japanese food lovers
Had the bento lunch box with California and Tuna rolls. Its so good!!! Love this place and its super close to where I work which is so nice.
Fast service
Nice place
Live Sushi has been a staple of Potrero Hill. They have amazing sushi and carry a lot of great fish from Japan including Japanese Uni (which was silky and sweet!).Tonight I also ordered their ocean trout nigiri and it was so refreshing. The chef prepared it with a small slice of lime and topped it with tobiko which made give it a great blend of salt and acidity. Also, must try the scallop burger (not actually a burger) which is two slices of hotate (raw scallop) sandwiching crispy salmon skin and a slice of cucumber!
This place has some of the freshest sushi in the city. They take pride in their work and they have a lot of fresh fish they get from Japan each day! Try the oysters with uni! Go for the sake flight/sampler! Sit at the bar and hang out with the chefs
Awesome place..almost forgot about it. Used to go there in the past plenty of time. Very good food and friendly staff.
Loved the SFPD roll! Service was fast and friendly and excellent.
Amazing sushi. This place has some of the freshest and most delicious sushi Ive ever had. Its a little pricy, a good meal per person is about $35-50. The service is good and theres a very lively mood there.
Wait is very long without reservation. Theyre usually crowded. The food is decent, but very over priced for what they offer, especially compared to other places in the city. Limited street parking.Service was incredibly slow.Doesnt leave me wanting to go back. But - highly recommend for take out or delivery.
Cindy is the best!Food and drinks too!
Always Fresh & Delicious... One of my if not my favorite sushi restaurants in the city... SF Native, been frequenting since they opened l and will always continue to visit.
Food was good. I didnt really like the beef in the udon though. Kind of dry
Great local sushi place with tons of options. I particularly enjoyed the Romeo & Juliet and a Spicy Tuna roll. Great service and always busy, so everything is super fresh!
Great service. My friend hosted a wine tasting there and they were very generous with helping us.
I’ve enjoyed and frequently recommended Live Sushi as a great neighborhood spot with high quality food. Unfortunately the service has gone precipitously downhill and makes the restaurant no longer worth visiting. On our most recent visit we made a reservation for a Saturday night; on arriving on time we were told by the hostess our reservation would not be honored because we made it “in the last couple hours.” Asking for clarification we were only told “it’s Saturday” -- yes, which is why we made a reservation.Live Sushi: Managing reservations is amongst the most basic things a restaurant does - flat out refusing to honor reservations made is maliciously disrespectful to anyone, let alone your frequently returning customers and advocates. The hostess’s rudeness & unwillingness to help in the situation was icing on the cake; we won’t be returning and we’ll recommend others do the same.
Best sushi that doesnt hurt your budget. Fishes are so fresh, most of them doesnt even need any dressing or sauce.
Good beef and cha shu soup. The portions and size of sushi has shrunk over the years I have visited. The restaurant is very noisy when nearing capacity, so conduct sensitive business elsewhere. In general, very good service and a satisfying dining experience overall
Good food quick service. I work in the area so this is one of the regular spots for me. Prices are on par with other sushi places.
One of our neighborhood go-tos
Average sushi restaurant with a cozy feel and reasonable prices. I ordered the three-item bento box which was decent and the spicy tuna rolls were really good however the mixed tempura could have come out a little crispier. The service was really slow and they forgot my drink order so not one of my top choices but I would go back if someone else initiated.
Went here late at night because nothing was open. Got some ramen and it was pretty good but nothing id say is too special. Definitely a great late night food place though. good service too.
Great spot for lunch. Fast and friendly service. Sushi is fresh and delicious! Ramen is pretty good as well.
Tasty and delicious! The service was great, food was on point and the prices were ok. Solid sushi spot, well be back for sure.
Fantastically fresh sushi that is sure to please even the pickiest raw fish eaters
TL;DR - Every dish was delivered ~20 mins apart and portions so small that we left hungry and finished our dinner at Whole Foods. +1 star because it tasted fine, and +1 star because they compd some items after we expressed our upset. Wont be back, ever.We ordered 4 rolls, 1 order of Ankimo, and 1 order of sashimi and it took 1.5 hrs to be served. Each roll averaged $12-14 and had ~6 pieces. Thats $2.50 per bite! The food tasted fine but definitely not worth this much! Between 3 people at any other comparable sushi restaurant, this amount of food would be a satisfactory dinner (give or take a roll). The most infuriating thing was the wait between each dish being delivered. LUCKILY we were sharing everything! If not, I can imagine that the 3rd persons order wouldve taken nearly an hour into the meal. At the portion size, we literally left hungry. Wed actually ordered an extra double-hamachi roll part-way into the meal after seeing how small the earlier portions were. It didnt arrive until another 30 minutes.By that point we were absolutely fed up and had already vocalized to the waitress in an honest and respectful way. When it arrived, we told them to take it off the bill because we wanted to GTFO of there and not give them another penny. Funny enough, this roll she brought was almost twice the portion of the first roll we ordered of the same type. Appears theyll only deliver value if you complain? When we refused this roll, they were kind enough to remove 2 items from the bill of items we did consume. Giving them a star for that, but not enough to make me ever want to come back here to potentially experience this again.
A great place for quick sushi with friendly service. Its not the best sushi youve ever had, but its definitely better than average. The best part is that there is always ample room and there is a welcoming atmosphere. One of my main gripes is that this place needs more lamps, it is DARK in there!
This was much better than I expected. Miraculously found parking outside the front door. Ate several appetizers and especially loved the miso glazed grilled black cod. wow. Excellent staff and service.
Fresh fish. Reasonable prices, especially for the lunch bento box. Friendly and responsive staff too.
Sushi selection was wonderful! Wouldve received 5 stars if they had better customer service. They seemed short staffed.
This was my go to place for Japanese food when I lived in Potrero hill. The prices are reasonable and the food is always great. I never had a disappointing experience coming here.
Super yummy!! Unfortunately not as many wild caught options for fishes but really good regardless and fairly priced
I use to get take out regularly from this place when I was working nearby. I like their dinner bentos a lot. The sushi is also very fresh. The service is excellent. Unfortunately street parking is tough to find in this area or I would come here more often.
If you like typical American sushi where the chef is too generous with sauces and dressing, this (or most places in the suburbs) is for you. If you like good sushi and you’ve found your way here, you’re only about a 10 minute walk from either Umi or Okane, which are both far superior to this place. But the noodles are OK and the staff is nice, so 3 stars is fair.
