Any rescue has a massive uphill battle in front of them. The good, great prices! They want you to bring the entire family plus pets. All shots and surgeries are covered and the 250 deposit is very smart to male sure people get their pets fixed. 2 staff member & one volunteer were friendly. Unfortunately this leads into the bad, other staff and volunteers wouldnt even talk to us and go out of their way to not make eye contact. My youngest daughter said hi to a young lady and got nothing back. Just as a reminder, we are an important part of this process too. Second complaint no phone number, they do get back on email but being able to talk to someone is nice. Last and certainly not least, my pup has kennel cough. Everything else is covered except that... To me that makes it seem like this is normal. I do like this rescue wish I could give it a 3.5 but the volunteers and hopefully not staff, almost made me leave before we found our newest family member.

The dog from the shelter had giardia and kennel cough and came home with bloody diarrhea that was not cured with the dewormer they gave. The staff vet said to contact them if the diarrhea persisted, but gave no number with which to contact them, and they didn’t respond to the emails until weeks later. Their spay and neuter appointments are also 6 months backed up.

This is a very popular shelter and I can tell why, they take care of the animals very well, the staff is very well trained and informative and very kind both to the animals as well as to prospective adopters. Youre required to send in an application first through their website and upon approval youll be able to set up a scheduled appointment to meet a dog, they are very busy and appointment times are booked all the way to December but if you follow their Instagram theyll let you know if walk-ins are available for a particular day. We got lucky and were able to go during a walk-in and were able to add a new member to our family. Special shout out to Madeline who took the time to answer all of our questions and really made us feel welcomed.

I had been looking for a pup since my long-time companion recently passed away. This place rates the tops in responding to inquiries, and listing relevant---and honest---information on their website! They have a good selection of dogs and puppies, as they do take a lot of dogs other places wont. They also get many dogs from the Central Valley, and, I believe, Mexico. The facility in SFs Bayview is great, with a lot of room for exercise etc. They are thorough in explaining what the future should do, and list all shots, future appointments, etc. Im sure several others do the same, but a few I tried to contact were not as prompt in responding, and didnt offer too much information.I got a great young pup! Now Im having fun with paper training, and I hope she doesnt chew my fingers off before I can get some chew toys! So, Id list this place as one of the top three or four places you really should start your search if SF is within your search area.Let me add that Suzi, the mother of the pup I adopted (Cinder, now Mango) is still available as of Jan 18, 2020. I asked to meet her, to get an idea of my pups mothers size, temperament, etc.If I had the time and energy I would ALSO adopt Suzi!! She is about two years old, and one of the friendliest dogs---to a complete stranger---that I have ever met! If you want a mature---but still relatively young--friendly dog, she would seem to be a good fit for families with kids, etc. as well as one-on-one. Im just adding this since she deserves to be adopted by nice people who appreciate a special dog!ERS

Very upsetting and horrible experience. This rescue clearly doesnt care about the dogs. Very unorganized and unreliable. DO NOT GO HERE.I went with my mom for moral support to meet one of their dogs. We knew this dog was in foster so we followed THEIR rules to make an appointment 48 hours in advance. It had the dogs name on the appointment so, as one would, we assumed we were going to meet her. Upon arrival, they told us the dog isnt there because shes in foster... Then, they tell us that they sent us an email TWO HOURS before the appointment saying my mom isnt a good fit because I have a puppy and it wouldnt be a good idea for the dog. Mind you, I (nor my dog) do NOT live with my mom AND this was stated in the application. We also live in Davis so we took the day off from work to meet this dog which was ALSO stated in the application. So, it was very rude and unprofessional to let us know 2 hours before the appointment that my mom isnt a good fit even though they approved the application and sent us some days/times to set an appointment... Very confusing! This dog has also been with the rescue since JULY 2020! Why arent they doing more to actually get this dog adopted?? Hmm...After this, they tell us they have a few dogs they think would be a great fit for my mom which was VERY strange since they didnt truly read her application so I dont know why they think they know which dogs would be a good fit... The two dogs we met were NOT ready for adoption. The first, Lady, was beyond scared and shaking the entire time she was with us. She wouldnt come near us, look at us or even take a treat. Clearly, she needs help and more socialization before getting adopted or even a foster home would be best for Lady. Next, we meet Shirley. They tell us she just had a puppy so shes still nursing !! Umm, why are you trying to get this dog adopted when her puppy is still with her and shes nursing? Also, a horrible recommendation if they think that is okay to do that to a dog. They also tell us that Shirley needs to get spayed and we would be responsible for paying for that. I have never heard of such a thing coming from a rescue. I rescued my puppy and the rescue took care of all costs for her spay. So, clearly, their adoption process is very backwards and poorly managed. They only care to benefit from selling dogs instead of actually helping them. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS RESCUE. They are NOT for helping any dog, only themselves $$$

Questionable business practices, bordering on unethical.Ilsa and Marisa were unprofessional and lacking compassion. The other people working here I found to be pleasant. This rescue is overwhelmed and they need to work on their operations.I have been here 4 times, the first in September. An appointment via the website took months.Their prices are exorbitant compared other rescues and shelters, others are cleaner and more organized and set you and the dog up for greater success. Unfortunately, the poor animals are getting the brunt of their lack of professionalism. They received a dog on WED 12/2/2020. I saw her on THU 12/3/2020 and I knew I wanted to meet her and most likely adopt. I came back on 12/4/2020 and did that. I took said puppy to get rabies shot. Four days later, I suspected something was not right, she had Parvo.Below are a number of other shelters as an alternative to this one. Family Dog Rescues prices are high, it is too bad they do not seem to put that back into animal care.PETS IN NEEDCoopers DreamPetfinderDogma Animal RescueBAD RAPROCKET DOGHearts for PawsSPCA East BaySPCA SFACCDogma Animal RescueCA Pitbull RescueNorCal Bully Breed RescueTwice the same woman reached on and sent her experience with Family Dog Rescue.12/21/2020, from Mary F.Hi there, Just saw your review of Family Dog. They are super unethical. May I ask what happened to your dog? Im guessing you emailed them and they said theyd take the dog back - that is their usual response? Im hoping you didnt return the dog (I hope the dog made it out ok). I know in the past they have chosen to kill dogs rather than spend money on vet treatment. Parvo can be treated, but they have killed entire litters of puppies who had it (who could be saved according to their vet) rather than try to treat it and pull them through. Theyre a terrible, terrible rescue. Sorry you had that experience. They need to be shut down. She wrote me again on 12/29/2020 from Mary F.Hi Janine, wow, I am so so so sorry about what happened to you. This is horrific. I dont think they do proper protocol when dogs come in, most rescues would do a quarantine so that theyd know if there were any parvo symptoms. This is not the first puppy theyve adopted out with parvo either. They were actually notified by a vet that one of their recently adopted puppies had tested positive for parvo and that they should do a shelter overhaul and they did not. I dont have proof that that happened, but someone I know who used to work there told me, and I believe them. I also know that they often choose to euthanize parvo dogs rather than pay to get them treated. Its not a death sentence. I hope your pup is ok. I dont know Marisa, she very well may be on the spectrum, but in general a lot of the people who work there are really not good wiht people. I am not surprised that you had a bad experience. The animals are 100% getting the short end of the stick. It feels like a money grab situation. When I was involved with them, I was new to the rescue world and thought their practices were normal. They are not at all. They are a bad rescue, imo and totally unethical. So so sorry they treated you this way.

We showed up for our scheduled appointment time only to wait about half an hour, then after waiting we were told we couldn’t meet our dog until every member of our household was there. Our roommate showed up so we could continue the appointment only to wait another 45 minutes. After adopting our dog, he came home sick with kennel cough and had mucus dripping from his nose for days. We were also misinformed about our dog’s behavior. His paperwork said he was friendly and quiet, and his description on their website said he was ready for a family household. Come to find out, he is extremely aggressive and territorial. Of course, they have paperwork saying they aren’t liable for any of this. We have no issues putting in work to train him, it just would have been nice to know that beforehand so we could plan his training from the start.

Really shocked to see these comments about being well organized in the reviews, because my experience was the exact opposite.I emailed the day before my appointment (that I had already booked 3 months earlier) to reiterate which 3 dogs I wanted to see during my appointment the following day (as some that I had originally applied for had been adopted since I applied). I received a response about 15 minutes later verifying that all of the dog fosters that I had listed had been contacted and that they would bring in those specific dogs for me to meet during my appointment at 4pm the following day. Great!I arrive for my appointment the next day at 4pm. After signing in and being told to wait, I take a seat in the waiting area. After about 5 minutes, one of the dog fosters gets there, and I meet 1 dog. I spend about 15 minutes talking to the foster, and realize that I had already been there almost 20 minutes for my 30 minute appointment - I still wanted to meet the other two pups I was interested in before making a decision. The worker/volunteer that was helping me then asks the fosters to leave the room so that I can spend 1:1 time with the pup, which was totally fine. The fosters end up leaving me in the room with the first pup, and the worker/volunteer grabbed the dogs file and we discussed the pup even more. I then mention that Id like to quickly see the other two pups that I was there for as well, and Im told oh. I wish I wouldve known that you wanted to see other dogs before I told the fosters to go home. What? Why would you tell the fosters to just leave the dog behind when I hadnt even said I was going to adopt them?So I have to awkwardly stumble over why I still wanted to see other dogs, as I realize that this dog was basically left behind and stressed, and soon start to feel like this dog (who was great! dont get me wrong) was basically being pushed on me by the worker/volunteer. I mention that I emailed yesterday and was told that the other dogs who were also in foster were supposed to be here as well, and was told Neither are here today. Theyre in fosterI have an email saying that the fosters had been contacted so that I could meet them during this appointment?I didnt look at your fileuh.. okEventually I find out that neither of the other two dogs that I wanted to see were there/ever even contacted, so I ask her for a recommendation of a dog (that is actually there) for me to see before my appointment ends. She leaves for a few minutes, and Im still in the room with the first, now-abandoned pup, trying to comfort them as theyre getting even more stressed with the confusion. While still waiting, I see a dog out the window who I saw online and was also interested in meeting, and eventually the worker/volunteer comes back into the room. I point out the dog, who was a large pup. She says I dont think youll be able to see that dog because you need big-dog experience.I have over 23 years of big dog experience. Ive literally only ever had dogs 135lbs and up.i didnt read your fileAfter this I just... gave up. I made sure the fosters had been contacted to come back and get the poor dog that had been left behind, and I just left. I only met 1 dog after 45 minutes, for a 30 minute appointment. I was misled over email that I would be able to see the dogs that I was most interested in, and I felt that one dog was basically being pushed on me. The foster parents that I met were absolutely wonderful, but the rescue workers themselves were SO insanely unorganized and unprofessional that the appointment itself was a train wreck. I waited 3 months, and was so looking forward to this appointment.I feel bad for the pups here - such an unorganized, confusing environment - making it so much harder to get them rescued than it ever needs to be. Be better for the dogs.

Worked at family dog for 6 months before I was forced to resign. The lack of cleanliness / safety protocols is a huge health hazard to staff and dogs. The number of dogs that they euthanize (who’s issues aren’t serious enough for euthanasia) or who die because their health issues aren’t prioritized when staff tell the owner is heartbreaking. I often fall asleep thinking about the many dogs I met and loved there who needlessly died or got very sick and didn’t go to the vet for weeks or months. Be careful when donating to fundraisers for vet bills and health related things... it doesn’t always go where you think.

DO NOT GO HERE. I could literally write a book of reasons. I would not have any notes of kennel cough if my husband didnt see her cough up mucus. I was assured it was safe to take my new dog, Millie(snickerdoodle in their files), home without keeping her quarantined from my dog, Ziggy, because they claimed she was no longer contagious since she had been on her 3rd day of antibiotics. I called at least a dozen different places to find out more information about everything I could and spent nights researching. They were wrong about the quarantine and when I spoke to the founder about it, she brushed it off as not that serious. I get that by why should Ziggy and I have to go through the hassle of shoving pills down his mouth when we can prevent it? His health should not have been compromised to push a family to adopt. It compromise the health of Millie because if we dont find out about her history, we cannot do anything. We took her to two vets and they found her dental disease and 3 to 4 out of 6 heart murmur almost immediately. it has only been 4 days and we are already looking at at least 3k. We do not even know what else is wrong or needs to be done yet.The first dog we looked at, Hermione, was almost completely blind, basically completely deaf, and her fur was matted completely to her skin. Staff happened not to take note of her increasing blindness or bother to take her to a groomer.Millie may have two microchips. The staff didnt read her files with her chip number from another shelter so the staff member tried to just scan for one and he couldnt find it. He then injected the second incorrectly (she bled more than normal). The second vet she saw could not scan for either chips with the chip reader. They have a poster board with the dogs pictures and things you should know, there was nothing listed on Millie or Hermiones cards at the establishment or on the websites they were being advertised on. When I asked about health issues, staff said I dont know then brought out a file containing health information when I asked. There are much better rescues who really try to find out more about the dogs history and health so they can truly inform you as much as they can. I know there are rescues who are more careful about contagious sicknesses, behavior problems, and keeping up with their dogs. They will also be able to provide you with many more resources.I could keep going, but I think you get it. only reason to go here is to rescue the dogs from this rescue and have plenty of money to keep up Millie IS the sweetest and we were lucky because she was easy to warm up, house broken, good in car rides, and seems to be a good counterpart for Ziggy BUT her health is pretty terrible and very expensive. I hope that if we invest in her she can live as long as a normal Chihuahua, we should be finding out soon.DISCLAIMER- I know I signed a contract saying there was no guarantees about the dogs health but that same one I signed said they disclose everything that they know about the dog, knowing that a dog is on meds and not telling me until I point it out isnt full disclosure. There also has been so much negligence from Bakersfield Animal Care and Family Dog Rescue, its simply not okay.

My daughters and I have been volunteering at Family Dog Rescue for almost a year, and we have nothing but praise for them! Its very obvious that the welfare of the dogs is their number one concern, and its really touching that they take in dogs who, otherwise, would be euthanized. Theres a special place in our hearts for the blind, deaf, disabled and otherwise hard-to-adopt dogs, but there are plenty of lower-needs dogs available for adoption, too! They really take the time to interview potential adoptees to make sure that theyre well-informed about the kind of responsibility it takes to care for a pet, because youd be surprised at how many people come in without fully understanding the commitment theyre taking on. No one is happy when one of the precious pups is returned, so the adoption agents do their best to help people find a dog thats a good fit for their family, in the first place.I also have to praise them for allowing volunteers, like my daughters and me, come in to love on the dogs! Its obvious from the snuggles piled upon us that dogs need more than basic necessities, and Family Dog is smart to tap into the valuable resource of regular people who have a lot of doggie love to give!We will always treasure the gift that Family Dog has given us in being able to make a difference in the lives of these dogs, and encourage anyone looking for a new addition to their family to visit to see if your perfect buddy is there, waiting for you!
