First off the room was clean and the place has a nice vintage quaintness. The location is great and in the think of things. That said expect noise of revelers enjoying the area. My review has nothing to do with the neighborhood noise because when you stay in the thick of things you have to expect some of that. My review centers on the noise created by the staff and the poor door on the balcony.I stayed in room 214 with a fireplace and balcony opening into an interior courtyard. Hopefully I can load pictures to show this but the door lacked weather stripping and offered nearly an inch opening to the outside world. This allows not only noise, but various smells to fill your room. On the noise front, the worst was the staff cleaning the courtyard very early on Saturday morning. Despite being one floor up, I could hear the swish of broom followed by the clunk of her dustpan. A dustpan that squeaked when it swiveled and this noise went on for well over an hour. I realize every place needs up keep and cleaning but when a place is rowdy and noise until after 2 AM it is a poor choice to then start cleaning in such a manner before 7 am and keep that up for over an hour.Again of the rooms balcony door had a bit of weather sealing it would have gone a long way to cut the noise and smells drifting in. The ice maker on our floor also did not work and given the price of the stay these things should be remedied.
Really liked the room. Spacious and clean. Felt boutique. Very cool elevator and courtyard. Great location. Was here for a business trip at the convention center.
The hotel is certainly historic and very cute but it’s some what rundown. We stayed in a suite with a hide-a-bed. The king bed had acceptable comfort but they DO NOT have high end bedding or mattresses. Be forewarned. The hide-a-bed was a nightmare. The furniture is mixed. Some good quality reproductions and some that are scratched up, older, and low quality. The room was very clean but the carpets were old and had that I-better-not-walk-barefoot feeling. Great fireplaces and the location is super walkable! Very charming. If you’re sensitive, have a sleeping disorder or a light sleeper, and someone who appreciates the finer things in life this may not be the best place for you. However, if you can put up with a few imperfections and like old-world some what Disneyland-ish charm - you’ll love it!
Great stay for a convention. I was in a king balcony room, and it was so nice to be able to drink my morning coffee outside. The hotel is 10 minute walk to the convention center and parks, and super convenient to restaurants and Ralphs. The hotel has retained a lot of historic charm, including mixing in antique furniture. The staff was very helpful and attentive. I was here Monday to Thursday, and Wednesday night there was street noise, but the first 2 nights were peaceful. I assume weekends have more noise, but it was great for weekdays
My experience was great. It was a short stay, only one night. We drove and arrived around 5:45 pm or so. The plan was to see a Padre game that evening and then stay the night at Horton Grand so we didnt have to worry about driving back late that night. The valet took care of the parking, check-in was quick and our room was clean. The whole hotel was clean and I loved the old antique style everything. From pictures on the walls throughout the property, the Palace Bar, the antique furniture, etc. Check- out the next morning after having breakfast at Salt & Whiskey on the lobby floor was also painless. Well be back!
This is a beautiful Hotel .. The ambience of keeping with the original decor Wonderful. Loved our balcony room, and sitting outside to the wee hours of the morning. Air conditioning is extremely quiet, and the romance of having a fireplace in our room as well. Must say also staff was Awesome and very helpful. Tim was great in getting me the great smoke free balcony room!! Ill be back for sure.
Absolutely Gorgeous!!We really loved the Antique Decor. Lots of great spots to take photos. But we especially enjoyed the Salt & Whisky Bar. The Massive wall of all types of whiskies!! The food was delicious!!!Thank you for making our stay very relaxing and enjoyable! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
We reserved a room for the night of 9/24 for four adults. two of the adults in the bedroom on a king bed and the other two adults in the living room on a queen sofa. well, the queen sofa had a placard inside saying it was broken! the front desk said to us that other rooms like ours also had broken sofa sleepers and that they could supply us with two twin roll away beds. we checked out an hour after arriving and just drove the 7 hours back to Arizona. they charged us full price for the night even though we told them we couldnt stay under the circumstances. i took pics of the room before we left. very outdated, broken sink basin, shabby furniture, dirty carpet, etc....
Spacious room, central to gas lamp district. Many quality restaurants in the area in walking distance. Walking distance to Petco Park.
Make sure to use ʜᴏᴛᴇʟʙᴜʟʟʏ.ᴄᴏᴍ when booking a place. This site will compare thousands of booking web sites and usually will have rooms much cheaper than others! Thank me later! This hotel is one of my favorites in the area. I have been coming here for a long time. If you stay for a few nights you wont be let down.I loved it ! I was so surprised at how beautiful the property was. The staff nice and helpful. The hotel is located right in the night life, and easy acces yo water front.
My visit was good and my stay was comfortable. The live music at the Salt and Whiskey was great. The bartender was fantastic, friendly, and super knowledgeable. The only bad thing was the parking situation. I feel bad for more mature adults who are older and traveling because parking for guests isnt guaranteed and navigating a new place was difficult for me. The valet was very helpful and did what they could but parking should be an automatic accommodation for guests traveling from out of town/out of state.
This is a beautifully restored hotel! It was a great hotel to stay at in downtown San Diego for the affordable price, but I won’t stay again due to the extremely loud nightlife and lack of extra amenities. It’s a beautiful old building, but you get what you’re pay for. Rooms and bathrooms definitely show age. I would’ve ordered breakfast one morning, but didn’t see anyone taking orders or anyone else eating, so we went elsewhere.Valet parking is pricey, but it was very convenient and we walked or rode the electric scooters while downtown. All the staff were very friendly and helpful!
The valet staff were super helpful. I really think theyre the best and so friendly. The hotel staff was great too. We were able to check in a cpl hours before regular check-in time. The street noise is horrendous!! The hotel could use some updates. The door handle was broke on the closet door. No bathroom lock on door. The sofa sleeper was broken. They gave us a roll away though. Our sink bowl was cracked too. Another trash can would be helpful as well.
What a great hotel right near the gaslamp with easy walking distance to the convention center. The staff were wonderful, the only complaint I had was the TV was acting like it couldnt pull the signal in so I was getting fuzzy. And one night as I was watching a movie the movie just went blank and the channel couldnt be brought back the next morning the same thing happened as I was listening to the news its as if they forgot to pay the internet bill because theyre streaming the TV signal I believe. Other than that though it was fantastic and Im sure it was just a glitch. I would definitely frequent this hotel again.
The room, in and of itself, was nice....but the location of the room was just not good. We shared a wall with the laundry room and then, we thought we saw that the hotel had a complimentary breakfast, but nope. After paying as much as we did for a room we kinda figured that they would. The only reason Im giving as many stars as I am is because Tod, the valet man who settled us in around noon was a star. He was so informative, so friendly.
Positives:- Location was great. Walking distance to many restaurants, convention center, and harbor.- Staff was friendly.- Price was affordable for downtown San Diego.Negatives:- Place gave off some major haunted house vibes. Especially those old time displays as you’re going up the rickety elevator.- Room was not cleaned during the entirety of my stay.- Several mosquitos and flies were in my room the entire time.- Bathroom, TV, and furniture were outdated
Very nice hotel extremely extremely easy to get around to enjoy a surrounding restaurants.
How can anyone give it more than one star. They did not say you have to pay for parking it was 48 dollars a night. The king bed have 5 little pillows very small. The menu for breakfast and dinner had only 5 or 6 items. They dont clean your room until you leave, you have to ask for towels and have your trash empty. They will give you sheets, but you have to make your own bed.. I will never come again.
The hotel has such old charm and with that comes outdated rooms. I requested someone come to the room to have what looked like bugs in the vent removed and this never happened so who knows what was up there. The hotel is loud as you are downtown but it’s nice for walking distance to attractions and downtown. The sink was dirty upon my arrival, blood/grass on one of the towels, asked for a vacuum which never arrived and had to ask again for one, to the person on day shift. Sheet had a hole in it, remote was filthy. There’s a lot more but it wasn’t awful. I ended up cleaning the room myself. Would I stay again? Probably for the location. Outside of that, Ken is the best front desk person there. He provided exceptional front desk service and was super kind. He is a local and familiar with the area and was helpful in finding restaurants. He is extremely prompt with his service.
We had the BEST experience at The Horton Grand Hotel. The man who checked us in was nice, patient, and gave us a wonderful room on the top floor with a king bed and fireplace. He also told us that our reservation came with a free bottle of wine which was a wonderful surprise! The location of the hotel is PERFECT! We walked all around the Gaslamp during our stay. We were able to find free street parking only a few blocks away, too.The room was spotless, bed was extremely comfortable, and there were 5 pillows which was awesome. I loved the cool vintage feel of the lobby, the elevator, and the lounge areas.All-in-all, we couldnt recommend this place enough and look forward to coming back!
Beautiful old historic hotel. Great venue for weddings or just to stop in and look at the old photographs and have a drink at the bar
Great location within walking distance of Petco Park and lots of dining options. Hotel personnel very helpful. Parking can be a challenge when the Padres are playing so we used the hotels valet parking option. Our room was nice, a minor quibble being lack of counter space in the bathroom. Stay here for the location, but dont expect it to be quiet.
The property is beautiful but the walls are thin. You can hear the ghost tours going on outside until after 1am. The food was horrible. You can hear everyone on the same floor as you. The elevators take at least 15 minutes to make it to your floor. There is so much street noise from the tiny alley-like street at the front of the property. I would not stay here ever again.
No refrigerator. No free breakfast. No free parking. Parking is 50$ a night. Emergency alarm went off on a Saturday night at 3am and didnt let us sleep. At 300$ a night you expect better. I would not recommend this hotel.
Woah! Cant wait to come back again! Booked this place for a excellent rate at ʜᴏᴛᴇʟʙᴜʟʟʏ.ᴄᴏᴍ I like this hotel and Im so happy I stayed at my favorite place cheaper than what I usually spend.Very clean hotel, smack downtown. Not noisy, and off the main street a bit. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.
Spacious bedroom and bathroom along with friendly staff, located pretty close to the Gaslamp Quarter. My only gripe are the pillows, which were too fluffy for me personally and made sleeping kinda difficult. Overall, still great value at this hotel.
The room is nice but there is not enough towels and we asked for a bottle of water and they sent us to 7/11 at 1030pm. We are not happy w service at all. Daniel was great at check in but we expected more for what we payed for. I will never stay here again!
Hotel needs to clean the carpets! Carl at Sunday brunch was one of the most nasty, officious people we have encountered on three continents! Why taint a lovely stay in a beautiful setting with this ungracious man!! Taking away our chairs! No coffee! we are a very friendly group and were not demanding, but common courtesy a fundamental rule of hospitality.
My wife and I stayed here one night. It’s only 1 block over from the main street of the Gaslamp Quarter, so there is lots to do. It’s also a relatively short walk to the waterfront, Petco Park, and Seaport Village. There is a bar on the bottom floor of the hotel that does a really good brunch on Sundays. The room decor is all antique, and there is a fireplace in every room. The windows (at-least in our room) were original to the building and were very thin so we could hear people walking around the street below (we were on the 4th floor) pretty clearly. It didn’t bother us too much though since we had earplugs.Overall we had a good time, and will probably stay there again on our next visit.
Staff is very nice, bed was insanely comfortable, and the rooms are very beautiful. Seems like a very unique experience to get in SD
Stayed here three nights. The rooms are nice, friendly staff and great room rates. My issues were, the shower water was running cold. I called the front desk and they got it taken care of right away. Now here is my big problem. I was in the shower and the maintenance guy just walked in without knocking while I was in the shower. Yeah, he walked into the bathroom. Im a guy by the way. It did freak me out because I saw the door slowly open. He was like oh sorry and walked out. He could have knocked. Had it been a woman, he may have had a different issue. Because the staff is great and the rooms are nice, I would stay here again.
This hotel is comfortable and has a lot of character. The building has a lot of Victorian-era architectural details and pieces of antique furniture. Both times Ive stayed here, my room had a small gas fireplace and a small balcony overlooking an interior courtyard with a small forest of ficus trees. This isnt the fanciest hotel Ive been to. It is certainly not the newest. However, I have liked it enough to come back for a 2nd visit.
Peaceful, clean, friendly environment, safe for people traveling alone.Follow covid-19 standards.I give it 5 stars.
I had my wedding here and everything was absolutely lovely. The staff were communicative and professional. BTS Catering is the best in the bizz. We kept getting compliments on how good the food was, the entire process was easeful and fun and the Chef came out personally to shake my hand and make sure all the food was to our liking. Everyone was so kind and willing to make this day so special for my husband and I. I highly recommend the courtyard for your ceremony and/or reception. Beautiful, light, airy and never too hot. Thank you for helping us put together the wedding of our dreams!!
One of my favorite spots to have visited. I was in awe of the hotel which is famous for my favorite western movie, Tombstone
I loved it ! I was so surprised at how beautiful the property was. The staff nice and helpful. The hotel is located right in the night life, and easy acces yo water front.
Positive: It¿s within walking distance of gaslamp quick Uber from everything else Negative: While they were very nice I felt the valet staff was short staffed
Rooms were clean and perfect as well as exceptional service with the staff. Plenty of towels and extras inside of the room! Only issue i had was on their website it is not clear that there isnt a parking lot with the hotel and you have to pay either $38 for Valet or walk a few blocks with your luggage which was a huge inconvenience since there valet isnt 24/7 and we had pay for parking and walk a few blocks.
Please, consider another place for your stay. Its the worst place from 10 other places weve stayed. Service is pretty bad, but the most terrible part is your room. Its super small and theres no noise blocking / sound proof. You will hear your neighbors, stuff talking by radio, police on the street. We werent lucky, so we had a hamsters above us ( they were loud late evening and early morning), the hotel stuff bothered us at 10am to remind about check out (even with do not disturb sign and check out at 12pm). Of course, we werent asked about accommodation opinion during check out and other small things:) Overall, Im disappointed by this place, will never stay here or recommend to anyone, one the worst places in US in my list.
Positive: Great location! Very quiet with super comfy beds.
So Beautiful. Like going back to the past. Staff are friendly, rooms are clean and I absolutely love the patio. Well worth the money. Cant wait to see if it is Haunted. Lol
Noisy, had to wait for elevators for 10 minutes with no help from the front desk (apparently they consider it normal), no breakfast and no reataurant AT the hotel (what they advertise on the web is Sunday launcheon run by a restaurant that happen to be next door and has nothing to do with this hotel and on week days has just “small European style breakfast” (I am from Europe and have never had such terrible breakfast, long wait, and unfriendly servers anywhere in Europe). Unfortunately, except for the location, I cannot say anything good about this place. Will not stay again.
Positive: The hotel is nice and very cool. The bed was comfortable and the room clean. Negative: No mini fridge. Wish I could have kept my beers cold.
Great place to stay, plenty of places to go within walking distance. Every staff member from the valet to the main desk attendant and the bartender, were beyond courteous and helpful. I will be using this hotel again in the future.
Great Historic Hotel. Beautiful will stay here again
Its just not a good value for the price. Said there was valet parking but it was full. The staff looked lost, confused and overwhelmed. The room was nice enough and the location was good it just wasnt worth the price.
Positive: We loved the uniqueness and history of this beautiful historical hotel ! The fact that it is so well preserved is a wonder in itself, my husband and I loved the history behind this beautiful establishment! Negative: No ... the suite we stayed in had everything we wanted and needed !
Just got here today.Ive heard interesting things, looking forward to spending the night🥰
Hotel is cute. Staff is nice. Chose another option for brunch though. Food was ok.over priced and server service was below par
The pictures dont lie, this hotel is striking as you enter and the rooms are nice and clean. The staff was very courteous and knew the area well. Close to many attractions and restaurants in the Gaslight District.
The bathroom door doesnt lock, the service is pretty good though. Dont know why there was a painting of a sink above the toilet in our room but that is a thing.
Beautiful, great hotel. Daniel was amazing and helped us checked in safely and comfortably.Would definitely come back and recommend.
The hotel itself was... okay. The building is nice and the staff are friendly, but good luck getting some rest. Bring ear plugs and extra blankets, they dont provide any extras if youre cold. There were people screaming, engines and radios roaring, and it went on all night. We had to go two floors down to find an ice machine that worked. Be prepared to pay an extra $50 each night for parking. Cleaning never came by our room to empty trash etc. One night there was a guy passed out on the sidewalk until his friends dragged him away. Cop cars right outside our room blaring their sirens at 2 am, but they didnt do anything about the crackheads on the sidewalk.
When I was first in SD I stayed there a lot while I waited for our home to close escrow. Nice staff, nice rooms, nice breakfast.
The stay was pleasant and the hotel is very old and had some modern twist inside the rooms it’s very clean and has a cool historical vibe happening due to the decor and the age of the building itself. The staff was friendly the only complaint I have is the don’t provide parking and you have to find a paid lot but I suppose when this place was constructed cars weren’t a thing.
It was cool but the chair started rocking back and forth and it wasnt even a rocking chair, but it at least stopped when the fireplace spontaneously combusted into flames and the TV started playing infomercials from 1996. All in all Id say its worth the price especially if youre into the supernatural.
First I stayed in 224 very humble sized rooms, not huge, ions better the. Any motel 6 or travel Lodge. 4 certain. But then what gained this place a golden buzzer,Their upgrade from that room maybe 20 bucks more went from 211sqf to 600sqfoot.Its is stunning . Im sorry I didnt think to take pics. Urgh sorry. I will next time.
Valet parking wrecked the experience. The hotel was nice, but even with the service requested sign hung on the door of the room, 2 days in a row, we were never provided with fresh towels & had to go track the down along with coffee each morning. On the last day the valet attendant & front desk clerk could not be found for 35 mins so that we could get our car. Even calling the hotel’s number just rang & rang, the hand held radios that were used by staff were not answered either as there were 2 of them at the front desk which I tried to use to find someone so that we could get our car. Then when someone did show up they handed us our keys & told us we would have to go get our own car & pointed us to the public parking garage around the corner & instructed us to call the number at the garage entrance to gain access to our car. More delay was caused just trying to get car out of garage. When it was said & done we ended up missing out flight, even though we allowed an hour & 1/2 time prior to flight with a 10min drive to car rental return. All this & I’m not even getting started on the double booking at the hotel charged one card at check in while we booked through Expedia & was charged through them on another card.
Beautiful hotel, in a great area. I have to give a huge thank you to Daniel at the front desk he was a god send and helped make our stay amazing
Very disappointed!I booked the hotel because I trusted what they said on their website and I trusted the reviews! Was wrong 1st the front desk person was not friendly and was rude when I called, and they didn’t have a parking! Like they said on their website! And when I got there after 8 hours of flight I called asking for their parking he’s got the nerve to tell me oh we don’t have a parking find parking on the street or find a lot whatever ! And it’s freaking downtown they want me go wonder around for an hours looking for a parking or pay for freaking parking than walk all the way to the hotel! Why ? They not that good and he will tell me it is what is we can do anything in very rude way ! I travel a lot I have stayed in a lot of hotels but I have never experience such disappointment WOW !
Positive: The room was spotless and the front desk was so friendly and helpful.
Rooms are nice, the TVs have wifi to connect your phone to. Customer service is phenomenal, I have to hand it to Daniel, he went above and beyond to help me out during my stay.
Excellent service & staff, lots of history very clean great value for being down town.
If I could give no stars I would. I cant believe the audacity of the front staff. I simply asked for help being directed to my friends room and they lied to my face saying they didnt have a room when they 100% did. Im outraged at the discrimination towards people that look different. Im truly disgusted and will never stay here and I would reccomend no other lgbtq+ folks to as well.
Beautiful hotel rooms were emaculate the staff was great couldnt have asked for a better stay
Positive: The charm and history Negative: The bar closed early due to covid hours, but thats not the hotels fault.
No parking. Youre on your own to find overnight public parking. Website doesnt reflect this.
Treat yourself to this lovely place & walk to the game !! You deserve it...
Very pleasant Hotel with very nice rooms and a very nice staff. Very good value for a little over a 100 bucks it is a real value..
Really close to Petco Padres stadium.nice andConveniently to seeBaseball game.
Very clean nice polite staff . Restaurant is not fully open . Parking charge is outrageous. Bath is too small no room for a ladys cosmedic case nor shaving kit.
A very nice place to stay, and close to downtown
Is pretty, old and noisy, if you can deal with that, ok. Valet parking took forever
Beautiful classic hotel. Perfect.
Very nice people who are available to help others.
This place is bad a** we stayed here for the weekend to see the Dodgers vs the Padres had a great time with our balcony and only 8 minute walk to the stadium. There is a lot of detail in this hotel reminds me of the haunted mansion at Disneyland lol your right in the middle of gas lamp plenty of bars and restaurants in walking distance i highly recommend staying here!!
Old dirty rooms... need updating! Could of stayed at the Omni right next to Chase Field FOR THE SAME PRICE!
Room was clean and hotel is nearby many bars m, restaurants and a short walk to Petco Park. Youll have to park in a public parking area overnight which cost $30. Nearest parking was a short block away.
The room was super clean and quiet. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Would definitely stay again!
Great experience and great services
Stopped by to view...nice older looking building/style, but modern. Quiet street. Trees, birds, peace.
Beautiful hotel and friendly staff. But the sheets are not very comfortable and the pillows are very small.
Negative: Rooms are very out of date.
Old made you pay 50.00 anight to park no microwave had to ask for towels wont go there
If anybody is trying to find good deals for hotels visit RoomBully. com booked a hotel on there and they had the best rates anywhere! This hotel is a diamond in the rough! Historic hotel in the midst of a modern city. Beautiful touches including ceiling fans and fireplaces in the bed rooms. Old world charm with all the modern amenities. Loved it
Love this historic hotel!
Awesome brunch and music was mellow...
Location exceptional within Gaslamp area. Couple blocks from water. Great staging area. Airport close. Take a bus for $2.50 to downtown area and walk to hotel with luggage from drop off point. Parking is $25 a day I believeHotel had a very distinct and eclectic feel. Very cool actually. Cozy and clean. Furniture in bedroom was a bit 80s/90s, but it was of no concern because balcony and bed were great. Lobby was also a nice touch. Would stay again since price is decent in this area for a 3 StarBe aware walls are very thin. You will almost always hear people opening and closing their room doors no matter how quiet they try to be. With that said we slept great on the comfy beds. Water pressure and water temp could be a bit funky at times, but loved San Diego area so much and I’m not about to pick apart a 3 Star hotel over minor things. Hopefully get the chance to stay again. Recommend if you want a unique hotel
This hotel is a diamond in the rough! Historic hotel in the midst of a modern city. Beautiful touches including ceiling fans and fireplaces in the bed rooms. Old world charm with all the modern amenities. Loved it
Its a nice hotel. Lots of history stuck in downtown San Diego where all the other hotels are huge and modern. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Comfy, clean room. Would definitely stay again!
No parking in the building, we had to park 1 block away from the hotel at the ABM parking
The overall look reminds you of New Orleans...with a great courtyard which numerous rooms face. These rooms have cute little balconies with a couple chairs to sit and enjoy being outside and enjoy the view of the historic hotel and the trees in the courtyard. The history of the hotel is also REALLY interesting.... That people saw the value of the original hotels and to keep the deconstructed properties for the combined hotels to be rebuilt into one...really cool. The room that we had was a king, with a fireplace and faced the courtyard. Comfortable bed, the bathroom was fine and had plenty of space to stay for a couple of days. The hotel also has a bar on-site, and is conveniently located in the Gaslamp district. As a side note, totally disappointed that the haunted room #309 was being worked on was not available for the dates I was there. Would definitely stay there if in the area again.
Beautiful rooms, very friendly staff. Perfect location for exploring down town - short walking distance from the convention center. Was a bit loud on Saturday night because of the nearby night club.
Always super clean and comfy. Reasonably price for the quality you get. Parking is pricy at $48 a night. My go too every time I am in San Diego
Very nice room with a beautiful balcony. I experienced a nice stay. It was a bit noisy at night because of the nightclub across the street, but it didn’t keep me awake.
Haunted hotel, part of our tour
