My son has really been struggling with some of the core fundamentals and I have seen a dramatic improvement in just a few weeks. Ms. Kay and the staff are great at communicating and have taken extra time to answer any questions I had and give me tips for helping at home. I cant say enough about the value their years of experience bring and highly recommend this Sylvan.

Ms. Kay is very knowledgeable and able to identify weakness and strengths of each child. Provides clear directions during instruction which enables the child to pay closer attention and keep them focused. Commends each child with positive feedback while being able to encourage participation and she is very patient, Joel is the 3rd child from his family that has attended Sylvan Learning Center under Ms. Kays direction. His other two siblings are currently doing well in separate colleges. I would highly recommend Sylvan to any parent seeking enhanced learning skills for their child. You will definitely be satisfied.

My son and my daughter have been placed in this class since last year. Their progress has been tremendously encouraging and the method that this particular facility uses is very good because they were kind and hand with the school to make sure that the correct of them that it is being given is being followed by the tutors as well. I’m very appreciative and what Miss Kay has done for my children. And I see progress and hopefully they will exceed and their skill set.The most important thing in a child’s education is the foundation of education if you put him on the right path then they will exceed through on out. And I think that this facility has the ambition to do so

I will be forever grateful to Kay Stanson and the Sylvan Learning Center. My daughter came to Sylvan near the end of her 6th grade year, reading on a third grade level and struggling in math. Six months later, she was in 7th grade, reading on grade level and improving in math. The skills she learned under Kay Stanson transformed her into a stellar student. Today, she is a senior in high school with all As and one B -- and a 97 in pre-calculus. Thank you! -- Judy R.

There are no words to adequately thank Ms. Kay and Sylvan for everything they have done for our child and for us.Ms. Kay has been instrumental in helping him and us understand and manage his academic challenges. She and her staff have been able to reach and teach him when his teachers (and parents) couldnt. We credit them with his learning and success. He has always felt safe, confident, and able to learn in Sylvan classes. Their knowledge and caring have made it possible for him to get an education and a diploma. We will be forever grateful.

My grandchildren have been tutored at Sylvan for almost a year now and the experience has been remarkable. Their grades have improved, also their self confidence is great. They love going. One grandchild has now been accepted to attend early college while in high school. I cannot say enough about how truly glad I am for the Sylvan tutors, and the director Ms. Kay. I would recommend them to anyone.

The summer of 2014 is the second year that my eldest grandson attended Sylvan of Woodlake. He is 9 y/o and will be entering the third grade in the Fall. He was diagnosed as dyslexic and b/c of the sad state of TX public schools, lost a years worth of education...he repeated second grade last year after moving out of state. I had no idea where to turn last summer until I spoke with the staff at Sylvan. My grandson learned how to compensate for his dyslexia by the different learning methods and tools taught him at Sylvan. He made progress with reading by learning more phonics and used color to distinguish different letters in blends and words. He still has a way to go; however, he lives in Montana and only attends Sylvan when with me in the summer. Needless to say, b/c of the attention, teaching methods, and consistency displayed by the tutors at Sylvan, I will continue to bring him each summer. This summer, I also introduced his little 5 y/o brother to Sylvan. He will enter Kindergarten in the Fall more advanced than the average of his peers due to the instruction and dedication of the Sylvan teaching staff. He is beginning to read and can identify his site words with ease. I highly recommend this Sylvan Learning Center b/c the staff and tutors here really care for the childrens success in learning and it is clearly evident to me they like what they do. I feel their enthusiasm comes from the top with exceptional leaders in Ms. Kay and Mr. Dan. I owe them a debt of gratitude for the love and kindness shown to my grandsons.

My child has been attending here for over a year now and has tremendously improved her skills in reading and math. At first i tried to teach her myself but she would become frustrated and angry because she did not know what she was doing. At that time i knew i needed outside help to get her on track. I chose this location because of the excellent reviews and at that time lived close. My daughter started Sylvan at the end of her Kindergarten year and at that time was testing at not even Pre-K level. She is now nearing the end of her 1st grade year and even her school teacher is impressed at her achievement and growth on her skills. She now gets excited to read anything and everything. I am confident she will be starting her 2nd grade year very strong and at the same level as the other kids! We also used to live close by and we moved about an hour away. We still travel an hour to come here two days a week because it is worth it. My daughter and I both absolutely adore Miss Kay because she is not only very knowledgeable at what she does but all the kids love her. My daughter is also very shy and Miss Kay helped her break out of her shell and open up to her and the other teachers here. Thank you Miss Kay and your team, we could not have gotten to where we are at today without your help!

We have our twin grandchildren age 9 going on 4th grade next year, enrolled in Sylvan. Sylvan was our last hope/resort, as they were both struggling with their reading and math for the past 3 years and despite our efforts to help them, they were just not improving. When the Sylvan team Ms Kay and Dan evaluated them to check the grade level they were on, and told us that were actually on 1st grade level instead of 3rd and presented us with an academic plan that would help them reach their age grade level, we were very skeptical. We decided to give Sylvan a try and 5 months later the noticeable improvement on both boys, was a refreshing reward not just for us, but for the boys outlook on tutoring and schooling.Ms Kay is a remarkable Teacher, I wish we had enrolled the boys in the program, 3 years ago! She instilled the passion for learning into their world again and with her amazing teaching methods, they actually really get it now, as they say to us.We still have a way to go, but the boys love it and we are happy to see the improvement, so we will continue until our goal and Sylvans goal is achieved.Yes, its expensive, but when I see the boys faces lighten up when they get in the classroom and they ask me if they can stay longer, I realize its all worth it.And if they capture these basic educational skills, then everything else will fall into place.Teachers like Ms Kay are hard to find. So dedicated, tireless, patient, giving, passionate for what she does, never too busy to explain and talk to the parents about the detailed progress of their children. She has a great team of teachers that she assigns to the children based on their individual needs and she is always on top of things, by monitoring constantly their progress. To those who are skeptical and are not sure if its a good decision to enroll their child in Sylvan, I would highly recommend this location.

My son has only been going to Sylvan for about 2 months, and he changed completely! At the beginning he hated to read, really disliked writing anything, and his confidence level was down immensely. Now he will pick up a book and try to read it himself, he writes his homework by himself and says i got this mom!, and he even raises his hand in class to ask and answer questions. His teachers have even commented on how much his attitude and study habits have improved. I could not be more proud of my little angel and I am so very thankful to Sylvan. They do an amazing job and it is money WELL spent!!

Sylvan has been a blessing to my child. My daughter started going here midway through 2nd grade. She has adhd & was struggling in reading & math. She has been struggling since kindergarten. Miss Kay immediately determined that she was most likely dyslexic in addition to the adhd. She explained how her brain processes information differently so the methods used to teach her must be different. She encouraged me to ask the school to test her. She was right. That was where her struggles came from. No one at the school even suggested that. Fast forward to 4th grade-she has learned so much! She is passing reading & math, she uses the skills she has learned from Miss Kay at school. She continues to go here weekly & I’m so thankful for all Sylvan & Miss Kay has done for my child. They have been a major piece of her growth, maturity & overall confidence. I strongly recommend this center to anyone with a child who is struggling. You will see a world of difference in a short time. I have a stress free & happy child now! Miss Kay is a true educator-not just a teacher. If all the schools had her we would be a nation of scholars!

This is one of the best places to take a child that needs help as soon as possible. My daughter has been having issues with reading, but what it boils down to is that she needed to work on her basic word knowledge and she is receiving this at Sylvan. Best thing I could have done for my baby, thank you Sylvan!!

My daughter has improved dramatically in reading and math in less than seven months. Her reading level jumped from third grade to eighth grade in that span. The reason is the brilliance of instructor/teacher Kay Stanson. Kay has the unique ability to recognize what even the best teachers do not -- how and why a child is or is not learning. She understands the difference between left-brain learners and right-brain learners and forms a custom-made program for each student. The plan for my daughter worked beyond my wildest hopes. She was tested at school a month ago and the teacher told her -- and confirmed in writing -- that she is reading at an 8th grade level. In February, she was reading at a 3rd grade level. She was struggling in math as a result. But now she is passing math and making As in reading and English. The credit goes to the most remarkable teacher I have ever known -- and I come from a family of gifted teachers! I wish every struggling student in San Antonio and the surrounding area could spend some time under Kay Stanson at Sylvan.

First off, my child was diagnosed with severe dyslexia and severe ADHD. So although it may not have worked with my child, it may very well work for some(obviously by the ratings). And if I were rating Miss. Kay alone I would rate her a 5 because she truly does care about the students. My rating is solely on how well the sylvan reading program helped my child. My child did the program 3 days a week for a year! So we gave it a chance but my child was held back a year. My advice to parents is, if you dont see at least 1 DRA reading level improvement in 1 month, its not gonna help. This is for elementary school children.Of course when my child first started the Sylvan program I had no idea what a DRA reading level was or how to test if it was working(just ask your childs teacher what they use to test them-then Google). What the public school system & Sylvan(sorry Miss Kay) couldnt do for my child in one year an Orton Gillingham Reading tutor was able to do remotely in 4 months. By remotely I mean online(I couldnt afford San Antonios OG program)The only reason Im posting the Orton Gillingham info is because I feel I wasted my childs time and my childs self esteem was crushed to the point of acting out at home d/t feelings of failure. Now my child is doing extremely well with no more outbursts. I will be happy if this info helps just one child with severe dyslexia and or ADHD.Good luck

Sylvan Learning Center TestimonialDH was first introduced to Sylvan Learning Center at an early age because his teachers told me that he could not read in the 1st grade and that he needed help. The teachers said, “DH is not reading; he is just memorizing the words.” Then the school tried to place him into Life Skills classes instead of the regular classroom, even though he scored high in memory on their testing. That’s when I took my son, DH to Sylvan Learning for testing. His tests revealed that he was capable of learning and that Life Skills was not the appropriate placement for him. They said DH could learn to read if he had the right approach and appropriate curriculum. Sylvan Learning said “reading was memorizing words”. Because of what Sylvan Learning said and their testing, I enrolled DH at Sylvan Learning for one year where he learned to read well. Learning to read after all at an early age, was something the school didnt think was possible for DH.Now, fast forward 8-9 years later; our son (DH) is now in high school. As his parents, we were informed by his high school that he was not meeting the state’s mandated academic performance level. Free tutoring was offered to the students through SES monies, to assist the school in meeting their academic performance goals. However, DH was not approved for tutoring because the school said our family did not qualify for the free tutoring services. After looking into the Sylvan Learning’s reading program, that’s when we thought this would be a great opportunity to help our son and that it was not about assisting his high school in meeting their goals. As his parents, what we wanted was to find help with improving DH reading and math skills, improving how he processed information, as well as, improving his grades at school. Our son attended Sylvan Learning during all of his high school years, and they have made such a MAJOR impact on our child’s life. DH is a much brighter kid, his confidence and awareness is sharper, and he articulates himself so well with his family members, friends, church members, and teachers at school. The staff at Sylvan Learning have showed so much patience over the years and have developed and tailored tutoring that meets DH’s academic needs. Throughout the years, Miss Kay provided on-going conferences that provided us with customized Plans for Success and personalized director’s comments about DH’s weaknesses and strengths. People are so amazed at what DH has accomplished, and they are constantly asking how or what has happened to bring about such unbelievable results? We always say we owe DH’s Success Story to the “Sylvan Learning Center staff and Miss Kay”. Our goal was to increase DH’s reading and comprehension, but Sylvan Learning exceeded our expectations. Sylvan Learning Center is FANTASTIC and a GREAT investment in our child learning. We HIGHLY recommend Sylvan Learning Center to any parent whose child is struggling in school.

Since pre-school my daughter struggled with her homework and testing. She is now going to the 4th grade. My daughter obtained As, Bs and the occasional C on her report cards but she would test far below average. After Sylvans assessment we learned her reading was at a 1st Grade level as she sat in the middle of her 3rd grade year. After just 2 months her assessment read that she was now in the 2nd grade level after only 2 months and only continues to grow. This is far better than any tutoring we have ever tried. My daughter’s attitude toward school has completely changed and always looks forward to her Sylvan tutoring sessions. Her confidence and excitement in learning has grown and I am happy and excited for her. I say 5 stars without a doubt, truly an amazing program.

So heres something eye-opening to me... Scholastically I wasnt your class valedictorian. I erred more on the athletics side yet I come from family of educators. Dad had a PhD and mom her masters. He taught at the university level and she, the advanced high-schoolers. When Roman was born I knew her education had to be one of the two heaviest emphases for her. Her first summer after we moved to Texas I enrolled her at Sylvan..., we have her religiously attending over her summer breaks in TX. The point in this...Through weekly benchmarks Romans test results indicate that Sylvan is teaching her in just one week what it takes her to learn in an entire month. Now lets advance those simple #s. Roman goes to sylvan for only 2 hours a day. So in 2.5 hours she retains the equivalent of what shes retaining in one week of 8hr/days. This number has me severely distraught. Imagine if u could get those results for all kids in just 2 hours a day. We as familys or single parents could use the rest of the 6 hours spent in the school day to teach them how to be contributing members to the household, (run a vacuum) while mom makes dinner, fold some clothes while dad mows the yard. Spend time being active outside. This would still effectively leave the other 3- 4 unaccounted for hours in the day to have them volunteer, play an instrument, a sport or some other recreational activity. At some point have a paper route like I myself had, babysit, etc ...the possibilities endless. I understand parents Dont have the resources to put their children in enrichment or remedial programs and that is not my objective in this. I just find myself staring at her wondering why is the school system not more efficient and if the problem could even be corrected. I have some awesome social media friends who were amazing educators, from primary, secondary, post secondary, the university level and even the daily unremitting commitment level I saw my parents teach with and still do see with my mother. The problem is that by and large our kids are slipping through the educational cracks. Our society is wrought w a projected responsibility and a dejected pupil not making the grade. The average college grad has 26,000 in student loan debt and no promise of any better job or pay for that. China cranks out twice as many engineers as the US and our jobs are being outsourced oversees. Can the broken be fixed, I dunno. But what I do know is learning centers across the globe should model.what I see at Sylvan on FM 78 in San Antonio. From my understanding out of 800 Sylvans around the globe we were blessed to have landed on the best. So....from my 7yr olds learning mind and my own grateful heart we want to say thank you from the depths of both. The educators from Ms. Kay to (our fellow former yooper) Ms. Coryn and all the others who have become an extension of our family because you forever have changed my daughters DNA therefore changing mine. Dan you are doing an amazing job. If I had one wish for my daughters further education it would be that you and youre team were the biggest part of it!!! We are impatiently awaiting Romans arrival back in Texas next June because it means the arrival of Summer with Sylvan. A resounding thanks!!
