Loved this place! It was my first time and I didnt have to wait too long before Dot sat me down for a cut. Typically meeting a new barber is alway difficult as they learn to cut your hair the way you like it to come out but she hit the nail on the head first strike. Very happy with the performance and cant wait to come back and visit again.

Just had the most amazing experience! My hair was roughly shoulder length and Dot fixed me up proper! I showed a few pictures of what I wanted and she nailed it to a T!! The Refuge is one great barbershop 💈. The stylist I had was great. The masking prevented me from understanding her name, but the service I received was excellent. She was caring and conversational. The attention to detail was fantastic. I appreciate everything about my experience there and will return.

We LOVE Mr. John. The first time we came to RFM we felt welcomed by the barbers downstairs. After checking in (temperature check for Covid safety) they directed us upstairs. The shop is unique and characteristic of RVA. Mr. John has a giant TV in his room. My kids love going to him and ask when they can go back again.

The facility has a nice and welcoming vibe. They offer online appointment booking but also accept walk-ins. I enjoy being able to book my appointments in advance to avoid a long wait time. Rayshawn is a masterful artist that uses clippers as his paintbrush! He is a perfectionist and will make sure you leave with exactly what you asked for. His attention to detail is top notch. Always down to start up a conversation about anything - TV shows, music, or even current events. All around an exceptional service.

Amazing place to visit with many hidden talent. Dot is my go to in the Richmond area. She wont disappoint. Even after multiple visits her quality of work is consistent, really demonstrating her ability to provide a consistent cut. The place itself has a wonderful atmosphere and friendly faces.

Ive been to all the fancy barbers in Richmond like High Point, but here at Refuge for Men, I felt valued as a customer. I got a cut from Craig and it was one of the nicest cuts I got in Richmond! He was accommodating and listened to what I wanted. Will definitely go back to Refuge and ask for Craig.

Ron cut my hair yesterday and I was beyond impressed. I came in with a mess of a head with hair I had grown for about a year. He took an hour on my hair and gave me the cleanest cut I’ve ever had in my life.I’m new in town, and was nervous about finding a barber. The service was impeccable and I can’t wait to go back!

Everyone is great over at Refuge. Always a fun and friendly atmosphere. Ive been going there for the past four years and consistently recommend them. The pricing is fair and theyre always pretty flexible about getting everyone in a reasonable time.

My husband has been going to Dot for about 9 years now and we have never been disappointed with the service he gets. Dot is down to earth, detailed, and has a very sweet personality. The other barbers and stylist in her shop do excellent jobs as well. They are all very welcoming and professional. That shows that she has created a business and a workplace that allows customers to feel at ease and employers to feel appreciated and free to showcase their skills. I highly recommend Refuge for Men.

This review is a little late, as I went in a couple weeks ago around Dec 11th. I’m usually not very enthusiastic about getting haircuts, but need to regularly because my hair grows back quickly. I scheduled an appointment with Dot, and assumed it would just be another haircut as usual, however, I was completely wrong! Not only is the atmosphere at Refuge for Men laid back, it felt professional and a comfortable. The haircut I received from Dot was great! Instead of leaving with just a haircut as I most often do, I left with a haircut that I actually loved and has grown out nicely. I wasn’t even completely sure what I wanted to do, but Dot made a suggestion without any pressure and her vision matched what I wanted exactly. I recommend going here for a haircut and see Dot if you can!

Great place for a good quality haircut. However they need to work on setting better expectations and communicating with customers about the scheduling and you definitely should not go without an appointment. Twice I walked in and had to leave. The first time was later in the day so I figured it was a long shot. Second time around I walked in around 4:20 pm, signed in and waited twenty minutes before someone told me the next opening was not until 6 pm. Will not be going back.

I was in town and needed a haircut badly. The team here was quite nice. However upon leaving I realized that my barber had only have trimmed by beard, meaning my left side was longer than my right side, leaving me to attempt to correct. The whole process seemed rushed but that very well couldve just been my perspective. Cool environment though in downtown.

Mess my hair up. Top of my head was uneven. I ask not to cut my long hair and she chop it to low. To expensive. 45$ your better off going somewhere and paying 15-25$. I will never recommend this place ever. If they mess up you can get a free haircut but who wants to go back once you mess up. Oh they don’t refund either if they messes up

Since I moved to Richmond a year and a half ago, Ive been getting my hair cut here! They have a great staff of extremely talented hair professionals and Ive never gotten a bad haircut here. I dont have a favorite hairdresser since Ive chosen a different one every time almost, but theyre all fantastic! You can tell they all are very passionate about their craft and they seem like they just got out of stylist school because their skills and attention to detail is on point.

Never had a bad haircut here. EVER. Ive had my hair done by 5 seperate barbers and had great experiences with each, but Jyra is who I keep coming back for. She remembers me and how I like my hair cut every time. Jyra also remembers details about my life and if you are feeling calm and quiet she respects it and doesnt over talk. Its been great coming here and well worth the 30 minute drive.

I always get a great haircut there. Never have any problems making an appt on their website and they have a discount for college kids, which helps while Im in school.

Ive always had a great experience here over the past couple years. Ive seen some stylists/barbers come and go but have never had a bad experience. Rates are reasonable and services are great. Just had the works with Rashawn and he was fast, efficient and did a great job. Ill definitely be seeing him again.

I went into Refuge For Men for the first time yesterday. After the snow days and coming back to school as a student my hair was starting to look a little ruff because I hadnt seen a barber in a minute. I usually go to Nirvana Hair Salon but it was closed this past Monday and every barber should be able to do a shape up or a simple fade. I started to look online for a decent barber with good reviews and I found this shop and also had a friend who regularly goes here. I sat down in the chair with a lady named Dot who was very nice and professional. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and it was a very small fade and a shape up because I had a lot of hair and it wasnt growing the way I wanted on the sides. I ended up leaving the shop with a completely different cut from what I asked.....When I asked for a fade and showed her a picture of what I wanted my intention was that some hair would be left on the sides as it usually is whenever you get a fade. She buzzed the entire sides of my hair down to the scalp and razed off my sideburns which Ive always really liked on the sides of my face. I was really shocked because what I showed her a picture of was such a minor job and what I ended up with was such a major change.I felt like a lot of my hair was being cut in the chair but, of course you kind of trust the barber once you are in the chair with your eyes closed and no mirror. I acted nice about it because I honestly dont know what to say to a barber whose happy about the job they did and once the hair is gone its gone until it grows back. Theres no amount of yelling or freaking out that I can do to fix what a barber does wrong. I wish she had just asked for clarification or something before doing something so drastic. The cut doesnt look terrible but, its just nothing close to what I wanted...I dont think the shop itself is bad but, maybe they just dont do ethnic hair that often or perhaps she was really confused by what I was asking.

I will give this place 5 stars because at its best and when the customers matter. But today was a little different. My barber rushed me and wanted to get out as soon as possible. He asked me twice if I wanted gel I said yes. I left without gel. I tipped him $20. Because I’ll never go back again.

This was the first time Ive gone to Refuge For Men for a haircut, and I couldnt have been happier. My barber, Honey, was very helpful as soon as I told her what kind of cut I wanted. I have a relatively dry scalp and she was so helpful in giving me names of products that would help. It wasnt like any barber shop Ive gone to before, it was a very great atmosphere and the barbers their make sure to treat you like V.I.P. which is how my barber, Honey did. She gave me the best haircut and beard trim I have ever received from a barber, it almost felt like I was at a spa! I left very pleased and with a shampoo that Honey recommended for my dry scalp. I would highly recommend this place and plan on going there from now on for my haircuts. Thanks, Honey!

A great place in RVA to get a fresh fade. Its a little pricey, but Ive never been disappointed when I walk out. Its locally owned, and I would choose this spot over sports clips 7 days out of the week.

My husband, son and I were visiting Richmond for a concert. We had some time to kill and both my boys needed a good trim. We found Refuge For Men online and decided to make an appointment. They got us in the same day and were ready for us when we showed up 15 minutes early. Mark did a phenomenal job with my sons hair. He was thorough, skilled and a kind soul. I was also really happy to support a a business that I learned gives so much back to their community. Check them out, you wont be disappointed!

$40 Is way too much money to pay to listen to your hick hair dresser chat about her views on polygamy. Also one should be able to talk and cut hair at the same time if you do it for a living, however she seemed find the need to waste everyones time and take 30s-1 minute long pauses to use her mouth. I would certainly go else where or at the very minimum ask for a different barber. The others seemed way more competent.

Easily the best haircut and mos enjoyable experience I have ever had. Ive been going to see Dot for almost a year now and I thought my first amazing experience was a fluke, but Ive been every month since and its the same deal. Honestly, for the first time in my life, I enjoy my haircuts and the way I look. Totally recommend Dot at Refuge for Men.

My haircut was b.a.d. needed to be fixed by another barber.As for the space: Chairs where far away from mirrors, hand mirror was completely dirty to the point it didnt work, and music was too loud to comfortably talk to barber. I think this place is good if you want a simple buzz or an African American style.

I really wanted to like this place. It has a cool vibe and the employees were all friendly. They also had tvs to watch while getting a haircut which was cool.I got the worst cut Ive ever had though unfortunately. She cut it much much shorter than the picture I brought in. I could have lived with that, but she somehow cut one are on top of my head way shorter than the rest. It was so bad that all of my friends noticed it straight away and said it looked like I had a bald spot. It was clear as day how much shorter it was cut in this area. Of course I didnt notice it while I was still there or I would have said something. My stylists name was Dot, I think. Maybe Ill try someone else. She was super chill and cool, but worst haircut ever.

What everyone says is true. Cheap and really well done. Fantastic at cutting Asian hair.Someone is complaining about not a word of casual conversation and the constant chit-chat among the barbers because going to the barbershop cant be thought of merely in terms of the quality of the haircut but hes wrong... the barbers wont try to make conversation with you at first, but theyre friendly, and I dont judge a barbershop by how much casual conversation I make.

Quite possibly the WORST haircut I’ve gotten in my life. I asked to leave the top largely untouched and to have the sides faded. I cannot speak for the other barbers who work there, but the owner clearly cannot cut Asian hair well. I saw good reviews and the price ($22 for students) and thought, “why not?”The owner didn’t make me pay for this, but I kind of wished she paid me for my wasted time and embarrassment. I’ve attached a picture for reference. I was thankfully able to salvage this, but for a place marketed toward men, I would AVOID if possible.

Scheduled same day appointment with Honey and she was fantastic. Listened to what I wanted, purposefully stopped early in the cut to make sure I liked the length. She also trimmed and shaped my beard which made it look much better afterwards.Ask for Honey, 10/10.

Cool environment... but $28 for a 15-20 min haircut is absolutely not worth it. My haircut wasnt as detailed as other (cheaper) places and although my stylist was nice, I really didnt perceive any added-value that would justify spending almost $30 in a simple haircut. Wont be coming back.

Excellent cuts, shaves, and trims for men in a very chill space with very experienced staff. You can walk in anytime to get most any service you need, which I appreciate a ton with a busy schedule. Highly recommend for a regular cut and trim or a last-minute clean-up.

I called ahead to ask if I had to wait, they said I wouldnt. Get there 10 minutes later, and there are many people waiting in this poorly air conditioned barber shop, so I schedule an appointment for later. I then wait 25 minutes with no sign of the guy I scheduled with being ready any time soon.

Got a new (?) Barber named Steve about a month ago and the cut on my son was absolutely terrible. Like comically bad. I had him make some corrections before leaving but my kids hair was JACKED up. Another barber actually came up and made a joke about it to the cashier, in front of my face while I was paying for this terrible haircut. After coming here several times, I have to say that I will NEVER set foot in this place again. If it had just been a bad haircut by one barber who didnt know what they were doing, that would be one thing, but to have the cashier and another barber obviously know and make fun of me and my child is unforgivable.

Walked in on a Friday morning, and was seated right away with Lindsay. This was my first time here, and first time having a side part cut. She was very patient, helpful, and knowledgeable, and allowed to tweak the cut a few times until we found a length that worked well. Overall very satisfied with the cut, the atmosphere is great, and Lindsay did a great job. Ill be making appointments with her from here on.

Just went here for the first time. I asked for a simple buzz cut which is what I always get during the summer. I was charged for a service that included a signature scalp massage and hot towel treatment as advertised on signage and their website. I was never even offered these services during my visit. Haircut was uneven. No AC made it a bit uncomfortable, I was sweating while I got my hair cut. Wont be coming back.

I had a bad experience. I downloaded their app to schedule an appointment. Chose my barber (according to the style she cuts), drove all the way down there, go inside asking for her, and they tell me she doesnt work there anymore. The owner actually stood in front of the door when trying to leave trying to convince me to chose one of the others. Im very particular with who cuts my hair. I wasted time and effort. Please update your app when you read this, I could of pre paid through the app and then what? I dont recommend this place. They tried to pressure my brother and I into choosing from their Master Barbers. Felt super uncomfortable.

I dont play around when it comes to my hair. Call me egotistical, I dont care, all I know is good hair goes a long way. So ever since I moved to RVA in Jan. I have been looking for a place that does great hair. I FOUND IT. I walked in, and got in a chair right away. I really like the culture at Refuge and the vibe it gives off. I was introduced to Lisa and away we went. I told her exactly what I pictured in my head, and without having to say anything else, she went to work and did an EXCEPTIONAL job. It was exactly what I wanted and envisioned in my head. She was friendly, talkative, no awkward silence. I loved it. She turned me into a customer for life. I highly recommend this place to anyone searching for a place that wants great hair.

If you live in Richmond and have hair you should get it cut here.I went in and had a great experience, but after I got home realized it was too long for my liking on top.The next morning I went in and they took care of it free of charge.Solid professionals cleaning up Richmond one cut at a time.

Paid $60 ($84 with tip) for eye brows, beard and hair. THEY DIDNT EVEN WASH HIS HAIR! When asked why, it was I just didnt think about it. Isnt it literally their job to think about the things they have to do? When I was obviously unhappy because from our understanding the The Works included all those things - silence. zero customer service skills on top of being super pricey.

Hands down the best hair cut Ive ever gotten, there is a pool table, corn hole, magazines and a 90 flat screen for you while you wait.Dot is the best.
