I was referred to Stonewall by another structural engineer, which by itself means a great deal. We had contacted the referring firm at the suggestion of our broker, who thinks highly of them. But we were purchasing an ~80 year-old home and our general home inspection had flagged a number of potential structural issues. For such work, the firm our broker had pointed us to thought we needed real expertise, for which they regarded Stonewall as uniquely qualified among Triangle firms.Im not qualified to speak to Stonewalls engineering capabilities - for that, Ill let the referral speak for itself. What I can speak to was the quality of my interactions with the firm - two elements in particular:1) Responsiveness. We needed to make a go/no-go decision within the short time left in our due diligence period. We heard back from the front office over the weekend, the visit was moved up a day when capacity permitted, and we received a detailed oral report the morning after the visit. We then received a thorough and well-written report shortly after, ahead of schedule. And when we then had a question about the report, the engineer responded to our emailed query sent late on a Friday by calling us early on a Saturday morning.2) Clear explanations and differentiation between imperfections and real problems. While the oral and written reports were both full of measurements (e.g., level within 3/4 of an inch), these mean nothing to me as a layperson. And I observe that engineers often are more comfortable with numbers than with the translation of those numbers to qualitative assessments and business judgements. Our engineer was the exception: a true thought partner, speaking in clear and definitive plain English.I rarely write reviews (though I do avidly consume them); my time is scarce. But truly great work deserves credit. I could not recommend a firm more highly.

He took the time to answer all of our questions and provide us with details we could understand without a degree in structural engineering. They also provided several recommendations for other contractors we could use to further guide us.

Caleb at the office was helpful and accommodating as I had to reschedule a couple times due to various circumstances. I would certainly use their services again if need be.

Jonathan and Chuck with Stonewall Structural Engineering are the ultimate engineers! I called upon them to review a foundation crack in my new home build in Clayton, NC. Jonathan evaluated the photos and had some concerns, so I met Chuck at the house. Chuck deduced the crack was thermal and caused by the control crack not being sawed deep enough. He took thorough measurements and I was reassured that the foundation was sound. There were other issues, though, with the stud walls and the top plate. The builder had done some things Chuck did not agree with. I notified the builder to correct per Chucks recommendations. The builder was not too keen on fixing the issues as he saw no concerns with the work. Jonathan and Chuck stood by their opinion, even speaking with the town inspector to get the issue rectified. The inspector sided with Jonathan and Chuck - the builder fixed the issues. Thank you VERY much Jonathan and Chuck and Stonewall Structural Engineering!!

Extremely disappointed in the service we received from Stonewall.An engineer came out to review what we believed was a small load-bearing pantry wall. We were told we would be charged for an onsite fee and then hourly to get us the report. The engineer came onsite and left to provide us a cost for the full report. We told him we wanted to make sure it made financial sense for us to get a report before we proceed. We were told that it would be an estimated additional $2200 for a report on the pantry wall. We told them not to proceed and don’t spend anymore hours on this project. Afterwards, we were sent an additional bill for $700 dollars for a site fee and 3.25 hours for them to have a 45 minute phone call with our contractor and correspond via email to answer questions.After explaining our frustration to them they wouldn’t budge. We would’ve been happy to pay for the site fee and 45 minutes they spoke to our contractor, but not the excessive time spent corresponding via email which we believe should’ve been included in the initial fee.There are many other reputable structural engineering companies based in Raleigh and I’d recommend doing your research before signing any contracts with Stonewall. We found another company that we were extremely pleased with and they charged us a fraction of the price and did a phenomenal job.
