Definitely not the same when I got my first puppy. The owners changed and the staff is different as well. The prices were $$$ but at least the owner was willing to negotiate! I got a reasonable deal. But now the price for a puppy at petland is $$$$$. No kidding! It is totally outrageous, ridiculous!! But I got a really beautiful puppy that I fell in love with! The staff was nice. But staff previous from the change over were super nice! And this time around they didnt have all the paperwork! And they werent able to answer questions I had about the parents of the puppy! It all was very odd an totally different experience this time around! Something about the whole ordeal was off! Try not to go in,if you love animals, you wont leave empty handed!

Everyone is helpful and always help me make the best decisions for my dog.The animals they have for adoption are well cared for, and have my own vet take care of them. This is an excellent way to let the public have access to puppies etc. who want to visit with the animals, hold them under supervision, and make a decision. It certainly deserves a 5 star rating.

I am a volunteer at an animal shelter and I am utterly disgusted at the gall of this establishment to advertise that it has an adoptable animal program in place. Not only were the half dozen or so mixed breed terrier-retriever-hound puppies and dogs on display quarantined in glass boxes on mesh (which is awful for their feet and also during a CRUCIAL AGE for behavioral training it is teaching the puppies to urinate and defecate wherever they can) but they all were EXTREMELY under socialized, malnourished, frightened of people and just cowering in corners, and on top of that had the audacity to say that the adoption fee for all of these dogs was $700. This is absurd and thievery. $700 is an average cost of a pup from a private breeder where you could expect to meet the sire and dam, a detailed print of their heritage, possible akc registration, medical history, vaccinations, etc. You can expect a $700 dog to be well socialized to humans, started to be taught potty trained, played with, etc. Meanwhile at your local animal shelter, you can expect a homeless dog to range anywhere from $100-250 to cover the cost of neutering/vaccinations/medical checkups. It is safe to say that any cost larger than this is strictly for profit. Dogs come in with all sorts of backgrounds: strays, owner surrenders, neglect cases, all of which have their own individual needs. To be brutally honest, the animals for adoption at this pet supply store (and any pet store that dont explicitly list the shelter and adoption fee in question that they are helping) are most likely from a puppy mill. If you are willing to spend $700 on a puppy for your child, do yourself a favor and seek out a reputable breeder who cares about the health of their dogs. Otherwise please please adopt from a real animal shelter and donate to them. Millions of animals are killed every year in the United States because there arent enough homes for them all. Volunteers give so much of their time and energy to make sure dogs and cats can be healthy and friendly and find the best possible homes for them, for very little payoff (often putting themselves into debt! Theres a reason why local shelters are always asking for donations.)

First of all, I have to admit that I also work at this store, so I will admit that I may be somewhat biased toward the positive. But I have also worked with these same individuals when they still carried pure breed or designer dogs. The owners are wonderful people who take every part of the business seriously, especially the care of the animals. We only have dogs and cats from various shelters and rescues. Thats why we not only very seldom have pure breed dogs, most of the time we dont know the breeds that make up the dogs we do have. But we can tell you that for whatever reason, they ended up at a shelter where they may have received only the most basic care- food, water and kennel cleaned once a day sometimes. No, its not the ideal situation for the dogs, which is what most people are most concerned about, but there are things that everyone who complains can do to help us with finding these dogs homes. Just ask any associate. We are always accepting donations of products that the shelters can use to help care for the animals. This decreases the money they have to spend on products and can put into expanding care of the dogs, etc. Some of our employees have even left jobs where they made more money, had better benefits, or just didnt have to spend every morning doing something like cleaning up animal feces, to work here. So, instead of lumping all Petlands together, why dont you come and visit us. You can even specifically come and ask for me- I will gladly answer any questions you may have.

My and my mother visited there on June 20th 2017 to look at some toys and chews for my dog. I saw this adorable puppy named Rocket and asked to meet him. The employee was straight out rude. The employee there just brought the dog over to the socialization area with a toy. He was being rough with the puppy and just carelessly held as if it wasnt a living, breathing creature. The 13 week old puppy started nibbling on my mothers shoe and even though the employee saw what was happening he did nothing about it. I understand that puppies nibbling things are normal but it actually looked like the employee was laughing. We left to look at the dog chews because we were kind of mad about what had happened. Another employee on duty, this female, greeted these customers that walked through the door. The also asked to meet Rocket and the female employee brought Rocket, a blanket, a toy, and treats into the socialization area and sat with the two ladies inside. I am really disappointed at the one employee that we were being assisted by and I wish to never meet that employee ever again.

TL;DR: Please research your pets needs before acquiring them, wherever you get them from, and do not count on this store to know the needs of their animals. The axolotls they keep are in tanks with gravel and areas of strong water flow, both of which are incredibly hazardous and stressful for these creatures. Axolotls eat anything smaller than their head, so gravel is an eventual death sentence, slow and painful. Strong water flows are a source of stress and can break their gills. I have a soft spot for axolotls, so I felt compelled to try to save one on deaths door, just a few months old with no gills and unbearably thin. The associate initially tried to fish him out with a net before I stopped him, because nets will tear off their gills and legs when theyre that young. If you stop reading here, the point is that a pet store should know its animals better than to break a species three most important and basic rules of keeping them alive.Im happy to say hes doing much better, despite my initial fears that he had ingested a rock and would die no matter what I did. He was so weak, I dont think he had the strength to eat a rock anyway. A week later I went back for his tank mate, who was doing slightly better than the one I took home, but he had been sold and two new albinos were in his place. I politely informed the three associates that the gravel will literally kill any axolotl that lives in the tank for long enough, and that the high-flow filters destroy their gills and make it hard for them to breathe. At least one of them seemed genuinely receptive and said she would inform her manager, which is why this is a two-star review instead of just one.I hope the tank conditions have been changed, or better yet, that they have stopped carrying axolotls altogether, but I cant bring myself to go back, and theres nothing I can do. Buying from them just encourages them to get more.Ive fixated on the axolotls, but if you go here, pay attention to the other animals too. All in all, Im so glad I have my little lotl now, but I wish I had found him under other circumstances.

Figured because of the good reviews regarding aquarium fish, I took a ride out (1 hour away)to check out the store. They had more uncommon but wanted species, however I was disappointed in the condition of the fish/tanks. The tanks were well marked, as someone took their time/skill - Wished the tanks were as well as looked after.I was interested in picking up some cichlids. The peacocks they had showed some nice color and were well priced, but they looked underfed/sunken abdomens. Same with Mbunas and there 3 dead in the bottom of their tank. The oscars (4 in the tank) looked to be covered in Ick and seemed to be struggling. The community fish looked in better condition. The feeder fish tanks should be avoided. The employee in the area greeted me, he must of been on his lunch break (on his phone and Big Mac box on table). The plants (below the display tank) looked OK but the water was oddly cloudy. All the above could easily be corrected, but I’ll continue my search...

We went into this store after finding their website on another Pittsburgh shelter. So, we went into Petland expecting Rescue/Shelter dogs at Rescue Shelter Prices. We met with two dogs that would meet the requirements of our lease, one wasn’t friendly, but the other we fell in love with. We played with him for a good 20 minutes, then asked what his “adoption fee” was. His fee was $599?!?! What?!?! That’s not Shelter/Rescue Fees, that’s just pure profit. The employee said “we ask for what we pay in vet costs and that’s how much has been spent on vets. Well then why was the other dogs fee the same? As well as a third dog who another man asked about. The dog we looked at was a 6 year old Cocker Spaniel. Bad news, but you can get a brand new cocker spaniel pup for $600-$800. Half of this dogs lifespan was already up. Other dogs had HORRIBLE dandruff which we were told they were treating with salmon oil. These are not rescue dogs. Don’t get your animals from here, go to a real rescue and find your furever baby, like we did....and our baby came healthy, and his adoption fee was only $125, for a 14 month old!

To summarize a long story: we walked in to buy a pair of rats. They didnt have much to choose from, but there was an adorable little critter the sales lady told us was a very young rat. It was caged alone, which made us feel really sorry for it, since rats are social creatures. So we left with it intent on getting it a friend later. They did not sell us a young rat. They sold us a mouse. A very cute mouse that is now our pet, but nevertheless, a mouse. Which didnt make us feel any better about it being in a cage by itself; if anything, mice are even more social than rats. So we would have felt like crap returning it. Weve re-homed her from the ridiculously oversized rat habitat we initially put her in (going Are you sure thats a baby rat? I REALLY think thats a mouse! Naw, surely they knew what they were selling us, didnt they? the entire time) and put her in our late hamsters cage, where she seems quite happy. So, to recap: they failed to correctly identify the species of the animal we purchased, which we purchased in part because we felt bad about the conditions it was being kept under. If that isnt the basis for a one-star review, nothing is.

I adopted 2 7-month old tabby kittens here a little over a month ago at $200 a piece. I also spent over $100 in supplies that day at this store. In my experience of adopting formerly stray cats, this price is quite high. We were reassured that the kittens had been spayed/neutered, were up-to-date on shots, and dewormed with a clean bill of health. At the time, the cost was worth not having to take care of all that ourselves and we had already fallen in love with the cats so we took them home. I discovered days after adopting them that one of the cats had tapeworm- I was told these cats were worm-free. We called Petland and they informed us that the de-wormer they use sometimes doesnt treat tapeworm and offered no apology or solution. If youre telling me a cat is completely de-wormed, you shouldnt be using a treatment that doesnt cover ALL types of worms. We took them to the vet, with the complimentary vet appointment included in our purchase, and found out they ALSO had Giardia. We had to pay to treat these cats that were supposed to be completely healthy for two ailments, on top of the $432 already paid for the cats at Petland-- not exactly worth the cost anymore. We love these cats and had a wonderful experience with the girl who assisted us in adopting them -- she genuinely cared about the animals. Its unfortunate that the health issues put a black mark on the experience and, unfortunately, I would highly advise from adopting here for their high prices and stick to animal shelters.

Please dont purchase any dogs or cats from these stores. I am a former Humane Officer and I cant tell you how many of these dogs come from horrid puppy mills. By patronizing these stores you are in-fact contributing to the proliferation of puppy mills, where puppies are kept in inhumane and unlawful conditions. I know the condition of most of the puppies and kittens that Petland sells and most are sick. You pay twice to three times the amount you would pay a breeder. If you want a puppy or kitten go to one of the shelters who will stand by the animal you get, Petland wont from what I understand. I have inspected Petland stores in the past and every one had sick puppies and kittens. Again, I urge you to NEVER even consider purchasing a puppy, kitten ot live animal from any Petland
