1. Why is there an over 300.00 charge pending along with the $153.00 charge?2. I drove to the drop off location from the gas station 4 miles...AND filled the tank BUT was charged $39?!?!? I make this trip 4 times a year. I will be telling everyone I know NOT to rent from Payless. The car was nice and clean. The man who checked me in was nice. I can understand a $100 hold or so but $300 and no prior notice?
All other rentals were outrageous and asking for something that we were not liking. Then we meet this amazing Payless sales man (I dont remember his name) but he helped us a lot and made our process easy and in few minutes we were on the road. I will definitely book Payless for next time.
The car was filthy inside and out. Obviously was not covid sanitized. Loud road noise while driving, sounded like a cv joint going. I have a camry they are much better cars than this poorly cleaned and maintained piece of junk.
Had an issue with my card with my car rental and the man behind the desk said if my friend were to take a car out under her name then he would return the money no problem. He then specifically told me that the money was returned to my card yet it never was, now I have to wait two weeks while there is an investigation to get my money back after calling their corporate office. Plus they were sending people outside of the airport for those who only had a debt card to rent when there were places in the airport that accepted only debt card. If you’re looking for a place in the airport that takes only debt, Alamo is the place to go awesome prices and friendly staff.
I was very nervous about renting from Payless after reading all the negative reviews. However, I actually had a great experience. David is the man to see at the airport counter. I shared my concerns with him, and he took really good care of us. He even gave us an amazing food recommendation that really made our trip to Phoenix. And our mustang gt was sweet!
We waited in line for a very long time to rent our car. There was only one gal working. Finally another person came on. When it was my turn the clerk tried to get me to upgrade. He said it was only $6 more a day. I asked for what that was exactly a day with taxes and fees. he said just a bit more. My rate went from $443 to $610 for 8 days. I would prefer an honest number. It felt like we were ripped off.
The vehicle I rented was new, clean and worked perfectly. No issues at all and I enjoyed driving it. Check in and out was hassle free. All car rental experiences should be like this one.
Overall, the vehicle and the price were good. However, they charged for extra gas after I had returned with a more than full tank.After reading reviews about this being a typical occurrence, I documented 360 miles on the full tank when I picked up the car. Before returning, I filled up and topped off the tank, knowing it had to be full. When parking at the airport, I took a picture of 385 miles in the tank. A day later, a random charge of $11.88 appeared on my card. Understanding the probability, I called a customer representative to dispute it. If they dont refund it, Ill dispute through my bank.Just be sure to cover your tracks on gas with these penny thieves.

Original rental car that was assigned to us did not match the car that was in the designated spot. Luckily, a worker was checking in cars nearby and was able to help us fix the problem quickly without us having to go all the way back to the service counter. So, despite the slight mixup, they fixed the problem quickly and without any additional hassle on our end. There was also no waiting or line to get our car and the drop off process was very easy. The car we received was fairly new and in good condition. We didnt have any issues with it. We personally didnt like certain aspects of the car we received and how it drove and handled in particular circumstances, but thats not any fault of the rental company, Payless. Its just how that particular make and model of car is made. Overall, we had a great experience using Payless and I wouldnt hesitate to use them again. They were also more reasonably priced compared to other car rental companies nearby.

After returning from a difficult trip with several setbacks, Payless was able to accommodate us leaving us feeling confident in the companys ability to take care of its customers when unexpected challenges arise (on long trips they definitely do).Jeff at customer service tackled our problem promptly and professionally leaving us plenty of time to catch our flight home. Because of how Jeff and the Payless team treated us, we will be using Payless again in the future.
Your company over charged my credit card. By approximately 140 dollars. The front counter customer service was great. The car was clean and drove well. The other customer service was pleasent but gave me a quote for and didnt honor it. 140 needs to be returned to my card
Thanks for showing us how to start the Prius hybrid . It was a wonder and the car was totally awesome . We got to top it out at high speeds and didnt look back . It even has a score ratings on how you drive . My sister got a 38 I believe . Car kept flashing brake brake but my sister said nope gas gas and made a killer pass that was hard to believe . You had to see it to believe it
We reserved a car for the week but they overbooked and rented the car we reserved. Wouldn’t upgrade us to a slightly bigger car without paying full price. Too many other rental car operators choose from to e er consider Payless ever again

This place is an absolute scam. Please please please DO NOT BOOK. We booked through Kayak for $500 rental and then the worker said he would email the receipt, never did and then added on an extra 500$ worth of insurance agreements that were not agreed upon. Called Payless and they stated nothing could be done until we went back to the airport. Once we arrived at the airport, Payless was closed. Please dont waste your time. we ended up paying double what we were supposed to.

My wife, oldest son, and I recently took a trip to the Phoenix area to visit another son. My oldest son volunteered to pick up the rental car, and rented one from Payless via Expedia because of the great prices. What a mistake.The trip had been going well. Our flight arrived 20 minutes early. Our bags were among the first off of the belt. Then we arrived at the rental car facility and stood in the back of a tremendously long line.After slowing advancing for about an hour the line came to a standstill. Everyone was looking around wondering why the people currently being waited on werent receiving cars. No one from Payless was doing anything to inform customers about the reason for the delay.Finally someone in the line asked for a manager, and there was immediately dozens in line who echoed their desire. It was finally explained to us that there were cars available, but it was taking too long to clean them to post COVID standards. That would be a fair explanation, especially had they explained it from the beginning, except for the fact that two customers who had been given keys came back to complain that their cars were dirty, and a third came back to complain that no car was in the space.It had been almost two total hours in line when finally those at the windows received cars. Everyone in the line erupted in applause. Due to attrition we were now three spots from being up to the window. Hopeful that there were now clean cars available, I asked the manager if we would be able to get one soon. She indicated that it would be AT LEAST another 45 minutes until we would have a car. We called my son in town and asked him to pick us up. We ended up renting from Enterprise in Scottsdale that weekend.I do not recommend that anyone be tempted by their prices. It is worth the extra cost to rent from anyone else.
TERRIBLE! TERRIBLE! TERRIBLE!We had a prepaid rental that we booked through Expedia and it was the worst experience Ive ever had. They did not have the car available so they put us in a smaller vehicle. Tried to resolve it with their customer service and got nowhere. Was told to go through Expedia. Called Expedia and was told it was MY fault due to late arrival (flight was delayed). Expedia told me I would have to pay a early termination fee to exchange vehicles. All of this while we were trying to make funeral arrangements for my father in law. BUYER BEWARE!

I made the reservation online using Expedia. The only location close to me with a pickup was at Sky Harbor. I called for directions to get to the rental location and couldnt get help. I called three more times with the last two agents telling me to park at any of the airport parking lots. On the third call I was parked on the roadside about 1/8th of a mile from the rental location and she refused to give me directions. I parked at the first place I could and they didnt have shuttle service. I went to East Economy, parker, road skytrain to terminal 4, then shuttle to car place. I complained there to the manager, who didnt tell me parking was on the premise. I learned thar from the parking attendant. Because of all the delay, I ended up stuck behind an accident and wasnt able to leave Phoenix until 10pm. The parking fee was 22.00 for the one day. I called as I returned the car to complain and they told me to tell the counter at the return location. There were 6 people in line and no one behind the counter.
The car i was given, Im pretty sure had been in an accident prior to me renting it. It was making noises whenever you turn and some kind of collision 💥 warning ⚠️ flashed while I was driving. I was very uncomfortable the whole time.

DO NOT RENT HEREThis is the worst car rental experience that I ever had, and trust me, I rented plenty with different companies.I made a reservation through Priceline as usual, but this was my first rent with Payless.When I get in, the guy in the agency was nice, he quickly set everything up and let me run with the car, he told me that I got the car with the least mileage, it turn out to be a car with a 58k miles. That’s fine I needed only something reliable to drive for a couple miles per day. Here in the agency, the guy didn’t gave me anything other than a poor paper with the car number and the license No. No estimation of the price, nor a copy of the contract, just gave me a spot number. I drove directly to my hotel.The next day, I had an appointment in the morning, the car didnt want to start, the battery was dead. I had to call taxi for my urgent appointment. Later I called the rental and explained them the issue, they asked me to bring the car back and get a new one. I get someone to boost the battery and I drove back to the agency. They gave me a much better car with much less mileage.The next day, I looked on my credit card and I saw that Payless charged me an 2300$ for the rental instead of the Priceline price (extra 1300$). I called Payless to clarify and I told the guy on the phone that I will not pay 2300$ for this rental and I rather bring the car back, he insured me that he’s seeing the same 1000$ total for the rental, as what I was seeing on Priceline, he told me that there is no discrepancy and I will be charged only 1000$.I returned the car at the end of my rental and flew back home. When I arrived home, I got a receipt from Payless for 2300$. They charged me for all the crazy fees, extra insurance and all kind of coverages that I never asked or agreed upon on. The guy in the agency didn’t even mention any of that, he didn’t even give me a copy of the contract or an estimation of what I will be paying. This is a thief, they charged everything as premium with all the coverages but no one asked me. I never ask for coverage, I always use my insurance, that’s what I always do with all the other company, and the other company always e-mail me and give me printed copy of the contract.Payless charged me more than the double of what I had agreed on when I reserved the car, this is stealing people money. I never had this problem before, with any other company. This is a thief.When I called them back to try to understand, the guy on the phone told me that I signed on that agreement, I never even saw that agreement. They make you sign on an electronic tablet, they dont show you what you are signing for nor give you or send you a copy of the contract. They do all that behind the scene and you get charged at the end with crazy premium options.Worst Worst Worst experience ever
I am local and was trying to rent a pickup truck for four days. I went through Expedia and the price is supposed to be $328 including all the taxes and fees. However when I went to get the vehicle and sign the paperwork the charges had been elevated and escalated to $947 for a four day rental. He said did not include all the airport charges and taxes which equals about 50%, but my paperwork had already reflected the taxes and fees which were about 50% of the base price rental. Evidently this company does not accept or acknowledge the price that Expedia quotes. So be very careful.
Bad customer service. Dont recommend as you likely will be double charged. Showed them my prepaid reservation at pickup and then they still charged me upon return even though the agent assured me I wouldn’t be double charged. They refuse to refund me for the double charge. Will never use Payless again m.

I said yes, I needed a car so I reserved a car with Payless car rental reservation booking number is 14030897US6 for June 2nd @7pm.When I got to the counter at 7pm there was a sign posted saying they closed at 7pm. Needless to say I did not get my car so I had to hurry and book another car costing me 150.00 more then I was originally to pay for the car rental.I have issues with a company that lets you reserve a car for a time that they are closed. Lucky enough I was able to get a car so I could make the funeral that I flew 4 hours to attend.I would like for someone to contact me regarding this issue as all I get from your supervisors is you should have been there at 7pm. Well I was and I would like for you to reimburse me for the difference that it cost me to rent another car.I don’t know how a company can let anyone reserve a car for a time that they close. This should not be allowed ever.
Wosrt experience ever, first I got a rental through expedia for Payless car rental and I still ended up paying more out of pocket than what my online price was for. After that the van we got wasnt properly cleaned, the wheel was shaking so bad from the bad alignment and the back tires kept losing air or something kept going pop so we ended up having to come home early to drop off the car out of concern for our safety. The van was so shaky that we couldnt really relax and had to be on guard. If that wasnt bad even the customer service from the guy giving receipts wasnt appealing. He had us waiting for a receipt after turning the car in and the guy literally ignored us as we waited, took all the cars that came after us first and didnt bother to say anything to us, I know he saw me wave as I went back to car to wait for receipt and after he finished with the others he walked away. I had to go ask the two other employees twice for help before we got our receipt, and even then he only spoke with the other worker who I called to help after asking for help once 20mins ago, as it was so hot in that garage because of a heat wave that was literally sent as a phone warning. After receiving and reviewing the receipt they didnt even give us money back for having to bring the car back early. He sounded annoyed and asked if we wanted to trade after telling them the problem like it wasnt his concern for ignoring us but there was no reason for us to do so as our trip wasnt near the area we had to return the car too. I got so upset that I figured Id call customer service than make a scene there. This is truly upsetting for me and my family-in law as this was their first trip out of state.
Long lines. Walked around hot underground parking lot looking for vehicle. No obrɛ told me to look for Avis. Vehicle was missing. Given wrong vehicle and had to return it the next day. Vehicle was dirty with paper on floor. Customer service rep David was rude and yelled at me when I called to complain and then threatened to hang up on me eben I asked for a supervise. Horrible experience! Never. Never again.

Check in was easy the car ran good the only thing is the car was nasty on the outside had not been washed at all they had bugs everywhere on the outside also alot of damage to the outside of the prius the window had a crack in it also but all in all good experience would have had a 5 if the vehicle wasnt filthy
The entire process was very smooth and easy. The website was easy to use when making the reservation. When we arrived my husband was quickly able to get our rental car information and get our vehicle quickly. Which is great especially when traveling with young children! The return was just as easy and fast. We also had no hidden or surprise fees. Everything was very transparent.

While I arrived the Payless counter to check out the car, nobody was there. Waited long till someone shows to take me. He does not seams to know the job. Took another long wait. Got my ID checked twice. Does not know how to print. He had to ask help from the guy on Avis counter. A lady arrive way much later than me got her things done way early than me from the Avis guy . I only have a few hours before sunset to get things done but really hold me too long on check out a car which already booked and all questions answered online when I book it. Very bad experience.

Had a lot of difficulty at the airport even getting a vehicle. The first car was told to us as being in U032, a spot that did not exist. The second car had a family arriving at the same time as I arrived, so I let them have the car. The third car, the rental agent brought to me, but when checking out, they said it was registered to someone else. But they let me take it anyway. It turned out to be a great car, but the experience at the counters and having to walk so far for two cars did not sit well with me.
Originally booked with budget but got transferred to the Payless desk on the day of my arrival. Kudos to the employees here because the budget and avis employees didnt know what the hell they were doing. Awesome staff as well.
The car had such a strong smoke smell in it that my clothes began to smell like it. I had the car for a week and it couldnt end soon enough.

First, we paid an exorbitant amount for a nothing special compact rental car for a few days. We were not told about the crazy refueling amount - $9.99 per gallon when we picked up our vehicle and it was not in the information provided by expedia where we booked the rental. It is still not listed on that information. We received a charge on my credit card of $178.11 a few days later. I dont even think the car we rented had an 18 gallon gas tank - it was a compact car. There was no emailed additional invoice or anything. I called and was told this must have been a refueling charge (he was guessing) - although it did not seem like he was sure. I then asked to speak to a manager. No supervisors were available and was told I would be called or emailed back in 24-48 hours - which seems ridiculous. We even returned the car hours early - to which i was told we would not be refunded money either. This has been terrible customer service and experience.
Do not rent a car from here. Waited in line for an obnoxious amount of time and at this point there is literally no one at the desk. There are 13 people in line and NO ONE at the desk. Car rental places know how many cars are being picked up and the timeframe - there should be all hands on deck at 7:00pm!!

Absolutely worst wait in line Ive ever had. There was a shared checkout area with 14 agent stations and literally only 1 person working. I waited in line to check out my vehicle for half as long as my flight.
Efficient and friendly however they didn’t give me the compact car I requested and did not tell me it would be a Tacoma truck. Too big for me to drive so the lot attendant put me in a Malibu. All worked out fine but tracking someone down in the parking lot was a pain.
If I could give them 0 Stars I would. After making a reservation 2 months in advance, I was contacted the day of my rental to tell me that they were canceling my reservation because they had no cars available. After several hours of getting passed around in their terrible customer service cycle, I finally gave up. They are the worst. And if you have a problem, don’t expect it to get addressed.

Waited in line 15 minutes to check in. Selected compact, were offered a vw beetle. What is a subcompact?, a bicycle? Car was NOT clean inside or out at the time we picked it up. We did not drive it very much, but when we did, the suspension squeeked upon turning the wheels. Low washer fluid light was on. Will not use budget again.

Honestly.. this place is underrated. We always attempt to go thru other car rental places at the airport based on a reservation made thru Priceline or whatever but then when we get to the counter of those other places and find out there’s other stupid rules or fees that we weren’t aware of, we walk over to Payless and it’s been way cheaper and easier to rent. Plus they are always really friendly.
My pick up of the rental car at the Phoenix airport was a perfect example of an inefficient, rigid, non-customer focused company by the way it was handled. It took 1.5 - 2 hours to get resolved when it should have taken 2 minutes. And not one employee from the counter clerk to each person I encountered (about 5), including the manager, even smiled.
Do not rent a car through a third party like expedia with this company and think either will help if you have an issue with the reservation. Tried to update the name on the reservation and got no where. Now I cant pick up the car because the name doesnt match. Both companies want to blame the other. No cancellation, no refund.
Only 2-3 agents working when I checked in to pickup car. Waited at least 20 min. When I got the truck, windows/side mirrors were not very clean (streaked and spotted). Tried to use windshield wipers to clean windshield and one wiper blade was half torn off.

We waited an hour in line, had poor explanation on where to find the car (Avis) not Payless so we searched 20 minutes to even find the car and it was FILTHY, then 10 more minutes in line to get out of the garage. I was charged for lost keys, when i was instructed by the lot attendant in the return area to leave them in the car. I left them in the ignition like instructed, then when I get my bill I was charged 300 dollars for lost keys. I am really upset about this as I did not lose them, and did as I was instructed. I will definitely be filing a complaint. up until that point it was great, I feel I was totally ripped off in the end though, and am not happy.

Went here last minute (my fault) and it costed an arm and a leg to rent the car for 3 days. The car was fine but after the trip we were charged an extra 700 bucks for what seems to be nothing. No damage, no smoking, no garbage left behind, full tank of gas, and on time. Customer service was terrible except for one guy, I wish I could remember his name. Would not recommend at all. My dad got a much better deal, on a much nicer car, and no surprise charges, from a different company. Avoid Payless car rental in Phoenix!Edit: situation still ongoing. They believe I have still have the car when I flew out a week ago. Customer Service is useless here. This is the worst company Ive ever dealt with.
Your Man Abdul was working the counter in Phoenix when I was picking up my car. He was fantastic! Friendly to me, my kids, and a good conversationalist as we waited to get everything completed. When I got to my car in the parking lot, someone else was getting into it as the Avis counter had given it to them. So, I went to the Avis counter and got another car. I would like to think in the year 2020, someone could invent a streamlined way where picking up the rental car is as easy as dropping it off. Either way, Abdul is The Man!!!
Just picked up the rental car is in horrible condition and Claudia was very uncaring and unhelpful. She should not be working with customers. The car is very dirty, windows were not wiped down well, there is debris in the car and a piece of the plastic hanging outside of the bumper. It is a shame that this company allows this vehicle to be used. I asked to upgrade or to downgrade to get a car in better condition and Claudia said they did not have any without checking the computer or asking someone. She could have worked with her partners and asked for one of their cars. However that would mean she would have to communicate with someone or look on a computer and actually attempt to provide customer service which she is not capable of. It is amazing that she has this job.
Trying to get in touch with the person at the airport because sensor warning lights are coming on they do not answer the phones. Sends you to a call center in India.

Worse experience ever and additional nonsense charges.We rented a car with Payless in Phoenix AZ the last weekend of January, and all we did was driving 20 minutes to the hotel Friday, and back to the airport on Sunday, as a matter a fact, we ended up riding with friends all the time, so I actually returned the car earlier then I was supposed too.The car they gave us was dirty, and scratched and even though we dropped off the car in the same exact condition, the employee that took the mileage, said “all great, you are good to go”A few weeks later, with no email or phone communication we get an extra $450 charge and a letter in our mail box 3 weeks later saying I got charged for cleaning because of smoking smell.My wife and I aren’t even smokers, and we can both prove with our anual medical exams we are not smokers, we even despise the smell of tobacco smoke.Payless is getting clients with lower rates and then scamming us afterwards.When we called the customer support, they said they would investigate because they can see the charges but not the reason for the charges when you would think if they charge you, they should at least know why.They told us they didn’t have our phone or email information on file to reach out to us, when literally that information, email and phone number is collected in the paperwork you sign to pick the car up.This is unfair, outrageous and a pure SCAMDO NOT RENT FROM THIS COMPANY, WE ARE DISPUTING THESE CHARGES WITH OUR CARD HOLDER IN THE HOPES THEY AT LEAST CAN MAKE THIS RIGHT.READ THE OTHER REVIEWS TOO, THERE’S A LOT MORE SIMILAR EXPERIENCES...

I really liked the car but I paid early and when I got to the airport, they told me that I had to put a deposit because I paid early! And if I paid when I got there I would have not. I think that is crazy and they should tell people that up front
After renting this car upon arrival, the next morning the battery was dead and wouldnt start. I called the company and they told me they were sending roadside assistance. After waiting an hour and 5 minutes, I called the tow truck company to follow up and they said they never received anything about it. I told them to forget it. Fortunately a stranger in the parking lot jump started the car. Payless told me that I would have to drive 45 minutes back to the airport to swap cars. Which I did. Horrible experience the entire time.The best part is I received a letter in the mail about a month later saying they were charging me $218 for the roadside assistance.
Besides having to pay for liability and full coverage both separate from the cost of the rental car; they were pretty upfront about what my cost would be when I picked up the car. I liked doing the full tank to full tank option. The car was clean. Transport to and from airport using the shuttle was effortless. Returning the car was easy and quick. The employees were so nice and friendly! The employee who was helping me get the car also gave me suggestions of what I should see and do while I was in the area. I will definitely rent through Payless/Avis again.

I have to say I’m impressed with Payless. After going to Alamo and being told my credit card was coming up as a rewards card I was feeling stressed and confused . I decided to walk by other rental companies in sky harbor and fortunately Walked into Payless Abdul was working the counter holding it down helping a customer at each computer terminal so 3 at a time he quickly got me into a vehicle even upgraded me no extra cost and no hassle . I got into my rental and it looked like it had never been driven a nice 2020 suv not a hint of wear and tear drives beautifully . I couldn’t be happier . I spent about 15 mins in Payless . Noticed a lot of the bad reviews were from people having to wait a long time in line but everyone needs to realize when you’re arriving at the airport at a time where many planes are landing there’s gonna be a wait that should be expected. So when you are writing a review about a company you got to take into account all the factors. I can’t speak for other people but I would like to let people know that there are things to consider when reading peoples reviews sometimes things are out of a companies control. I had a wonderful experience and I will update as soon as I return the car to let you know how my return experience goes. I highly recommend Payless and sky Harbor Airport Abdul is awesome Thank you Palos I thought I was gonna be without a vehicle. You guys save me

The worst! Long wait, 5 people ahead of us....been 30 mins and still waiting. Then once you get to the counter, they make you wait another 5-10 mins to get a car. The worst of the worst. Zero. You could walk to your location faster than they can get you a car. It’s not Covid related...it’s a poorly run business by people that don’t care. I’ve rented dozens and dozens of cars...never seen anything run so poorly. They don’t even deserve the 1 star - they deserve zero stars at best - actually should be negative stars. Hitchhiking would get you to your location faster. Unreal disaster
The staff was very professional and we quickly received our car. We had a nice car at a an affordable rate. Cheaper than everybody else around too.
While the low prices are alluring, dont rent here unless you have hours to spare! I had a 2pm reservation for a car. The line was over an hour long for 10 people ahead of me) and once you finally made it through the line, they didnt have any cars ready. Those ahead of me waited 2 1/2 hours between the line and waiting for a car to become available. I cancelled my reservation and went to Avis and the whole process was done in 10 minutes. After a long flight, no one wants to sit and wait hours for a car. Worth the extra money to go somewhere else where they will honor your reservation time.
I had a really good experience with Payless. Easy pick up, extention, and return. Will rent again, would recommend.
