Although it saddens my heart to see them caged. It is a sanctuary for injured or homeless apes who can in no way survive their natural habitat. Cages were being cleaned, animals fed fresh fruits and veggies and they have lots of toys. I recommend visiting as thier fees and donations keep them up and going. Nice little place to visit.
The owner of the sanctuary has a clear passion and love for all of her 100+ rescue animals. I am written by this place, on the Panellus bike trail, hundreds of times. I never realized how big it actually was. The staff is very friendly, the volunteers are wonderful. I got to hold a snake! Something I’ve been wanting to do my entire life. They have alligators, and even an alligator show. There’s an area with picnic tables, so you can bring your own lunch. They also host events. We had a wonderful time there, with a local ladies group.
Such a nice place! Love visiting animal places ( I’m a vet tech) the cages were all clean, all the animals looked like they were in good weight and they didn’t as the starving when we fed them. everyones fur/ feathers were all intact and clean. Such a good experience! The cages *could* be bigger but they could always be bigger lol it’s not the wild. I’m glad there’s places like this that take in and rescue these guys and you can tell in the back behind the day cages there’s bigger areas too for them so I believe plenty of space.
My boyfriend and I had a great time here. We bought a Groupon and it was $30 for both of us to go in. We spent a little over an hour here. We had a fantastic time feeding the monkeys, and looking at the other reptiles, and birds. They have name plaques for each animal and little inserts to read about their species! All in all a fun time!
My family had a wonder experience. We enjoyed feeding the animals. All the volunteers were friendly and helpful. The young volunteers could be doing something else with their time but enjoy coming in to help out the animals. For five dollars my grandson was able to take home a stuffed monkey to remember his time their. Are next visit we are taking a picnic lunch and bringing are dog. What a great place.
This is a very cool sanctuary! Definitely worth the time to visit. What they do here is amazing. All of their monkeys and other animals they have there are rescues that were in bad situations and got to come there where they are totally cared for and loved. Places like this need more recognition! Go check them out! just by going your helping them with financial cost that will help them make it even better. They also need more volunteers and donations.
What a fun experience!! They have REALLY put their heart into this place! The staff and volunteers go out of their way to make sure you are educated and entertained by your experience. My fondest memory will be was during the Gator Crusader show and how he doesnt use tape for his gators, but gauze so upon removal the gator doesnt have a bad experience as well. It was THAT display of compassion is why I WILL DEFINITELY be making my way back for another experience and memories.
I enjoyed seeing the cages clean and well taken care of, some could have used a little maintenance. I loved you could buy monkey munch for them to snack on; you can see in my first picture they have little tunes you can put the (popcorn, pretzels, and peanuts) through. I think that the inclusion of information and the name tags was a great idea. For the most part, the volunteers/staff were great, some must have been new and they werent sure or confident in answering questions. All in all a great trip!
Our family had an amazing time here! I have to admit I was a little concerned when I read reviews that it smelled, but that isn’t the case! This place is wonderful and we loved it! The animals are all well cared for and we learned a lot while here! The kids are already talking about coming back!
Wasnt actually there recently. Was across.the street. But if the sounds I was hearing were any indication, they certainly SOUNDED like they were having a good day!! They have been there for decades. Awesome place and a rare refuge for retired show animals. Go check them out.
Really sad.Cheetos as treat to purchase for the animals 😕😕😕No warning when bringing our 2 year old that they have full haunted house for Halloween and that it wouldnt be a good idea to go in.Also, dog friendly 🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈 the animals look so stressed out and sad, I cannot imagine bringing my dog where all those animals are in cages.Over priced $15 per adult. I hope that goes to the animals or the workers for putting an effort in this place. They need help
The grounds are beautiful and the animals are well taken care of, staff is fantastic and extremely affordable
It was honestly amazing and hilarious at the same time. Some of the small monkeys are so naughty. I forgot which one but, one of the small ones put their hand out when I showed them food 😂
The kids and I really enjoyed our experience at the sanctuary. Staff was nice and the animals amazing. Wonderful place to take the family. We will be returning in the future!
This place is like a refugee camp...we went a couple years ago and it was depressing. Seeing comments from days/months ago, it doesn’t appear to have changed much. The owner keep responding to comments saying how they meet or exceed the local and state requirements for primates. Sarcastic* Woooooow. You know the state requirement for howler monkeys is 6x6x8’? And for an orangutan over 50lb it’s 12x20x8’?We are really impressed that you are able maintain a such an extensive area for these animals. Keep up the good work
This is a place for animals of all kinds to have and safe place and to be cared for. Without this sanctuary a lot of the animals would have been destroyed. Please take time to visit and support them so that they can continue the good work that they do.
What a perfect day this sanctuary gave us! We were welcomed with such warmth by the staff, then got to hold a snake & alligator right when we walked in! The kids were enamored with all of the animals and the freedom we had to walk around and feed them all! It was amazing to see all of the animals’ little personalities. The kids even got to make sandwiches for the orangutan! And there are tables, benches in beautiful flower gardens.. perfect place for a picnic. We went to see the animals, but they seemed just as entertained by us🤣 you could really feel how much the staff loves and cares for these animals. It was inspiring in many ways. Thank you all! Highly recommend spending time here💞
The complete tour was just enjoyable. The staff was so nice and educational. Well worth a Family Visit. Primates are so well cared for. Thank You.
Im giving it 5 stars Im 37 and wanted to go. Id say its good for the kids who want to see animals but parents dont want to spend all day at the zoo. Id say without kids I was in and out within 45 minutes tops.
Pongo gave me a piece of lettuce through the fence as an offering, then asked me for some of my peanuts in return. Smarter than most humans I know. Amazing and so gentle.
We had so much fun seeing all the animals and holding the snake. We will definitely return!
Its sad, but yet we all have to live out our days somewhere. I think in that respect its awesome.
Our family had a great time here, this 2021 Father’s Day! The staff was informative, the animals looked happy and healthy, and our kids really enjoyed the whole experience.
Great place, lots of hands on opportunities for those that want to touch snakes, alligators, tortoise. The owner is very knowledgeable and full of common sense. Highly recommend!
The 3 of us really had a good time. We enjoyed feeding the primates through the PVC tubes they were very cute.
I live locally and had my nephews down for their winter break. I had run across a really good Groupon deal and purchased it for the 3 of us to go. My nephews are 11 and 13 so I wasnt sure how well it would go over. They loved it! We had a great time! We saw all sorts of primates, turtles, birds...we even got to hold a gator at the end of our visit! They have bags of food you can purchase at the entrance and feed to the animals too. It was great experience and well definitely return.
If you are researching this facility you may see that PETA condemns it, however their comments indicate no initiative to help with funding or solving the problems they find with SPSF. In my opinion the animals seem taken care of, most are tame and have more enrichment items than in many zoos. The facilities are a bit rundown in their age, but because this is completely volunteer ran I am honestly impressed with what they have accomplished with what they have. We enjoyed our time here and enjoyed interacting and seeing the expressive primates.
This Sanctuary takes animals that are older that other locations like zoos no longer want. In that aspect I have respect for it. However after going there and taking a walk around, I am a little saddened by the conditions. Maybe they need more funding or more patrons to go so that they can improve the sanctuary more. Sometimes I felt like I was looking at an abandoned area with junk in the yard. The cages had old childrens toys as items to climb on and play with. I like the idea of recycling but it just seemed like the park was very poor. Im giving it three stars because I like how the people that work there are all volunteers. All the money that goes towards this place goes towards the animals.
Great place to visit. It is sometimes heartbreaking to see the animals but thank God there are sanctuaries for these animals. Please donate to the sanctuary if you can.
What an amazing experience.
What a wonderful, educational place for the whole family. Came here with a friend and her daughter and all of us had absolutely great time. Learned about animals that live here and you have to give a big thank you to the staff and volunteers. They all care so greatly about these animals.
What a wonderful placeIt was so nice to see so many young people sharing their time and their talent caring for the animals in need. We did an educational tour and learned about Suncoast Primate Sanctuaries history. We also learned that the primates get fed five times a day. One resident is actually 76 years old in human years. Many of the primates have actually come out of research facilities. It was amazing to see the relationship between keepers and the primates. You could see the bond that they with each other Everyone on the tour fetl comfortable asking questions, our tour guide was very knowledgeable.. This is a place we will certainly be visiting again and again. Thank you for taking such excellent care of not just the monkeys and the chimpanzees but all the other creatures great and small that you have in your care looking forward to many more visits to come.
Super cool place hidden back from the road. We passed it a few times without even knowing it was there! We found them on Groupon for $14 for two people! The staff is very friendly and sells monkey food for $1 a bag. You cannot touch the animals but you can feed them through tubes. There are monekys, snakes, turtles and birds. The sanctuary isnt super fancy but it has a lot of animals for you to see. If you have a few hours pop by and see the monkeys!
Great place for families & affordable. Volunteers are very friendly and being able to feed the monkeys was the kids favorite part.
This not for profit and their animals need all the help that you can provide. Please consider visiting and donating to their cause..
We loved all the animals here $30 for two adults but if you grab the brochure and use the coupon in it (BOGO) you only pay for one adult. I looked at the brochure after our visit and found the coupon. The animals were Wonderful we spent a lot of time here just watching them. If I lived nearby I would volunteer to help clean and paint the placePlus spend more time with the animals🙂. We got tons of videos & pictures.
Had a great time this afternoon feeding monkeys and other animals here.
Pretty cool place love the monkeys and you can pet and hold a gator!!!
These animals were interesting. Great place to visit while in Florida.
I was really disappointed with this place. First I tried to use the groupon and it wouldnt go through. So when we got to the desk and asked the lady could she honor the price and I showed her on my phone what the price was and she snappily said they had nothing to do with groupon, or the prices posted. I shrugged it off, maybe she was having a bad day. We paid the price and went in, even bought a bag of food for the animals. BIG MISTAKE You would have to have the arm of a professional pitcher to get that food into the cages. The grounds were deplorable, the random birds flying around ate the food that landed all over the ground, the large apes were sad looking, the alligator enclosure was cramped and I couldnt even tell if it was supposed to be anything in a couple of the cages. I felt so bad about how it looked I video chatted it to a friend. Save your money. Go to the aquarium.
So wonderful to see primates and geese and alligators and birds in a safe and healthy environment. They need donations! It was fun to see the animals, but, I wish they all had more natural spaces and more room. They could use a better sign, too! Please help this organization out by volunteering, giving them financial donations, and giving them products they need to run their primate-loving business.
It had been many many years since I had been here. I went as a child and I now have broght my children. I was happy to see how they have expanded.
We had a really good time.Alot to look at,I was kinda bummed trying to give them treats that I bought for them there and some of the monkeys were really hard to throw them far enough to make it to them. They should all have a pvc pipe running into their cages so they can all enjoy them. The bags of treats were only a dollar a piece and the cover charge was also a pretty affordable price.
So much fun!!
This place is full of volunteers and good spirits. It feels like everyone is doing their best to take care of the animals.
Love this place enjoyed seeing all the monkeys being takin care of
This was such a sad experience. I actually cried in the car when we left. Not sure how there are so many good reviews. The animals all looked so incredibly sad and bored. There were tons of volunteers, none of them were interacting with the animals or visitors. There was group of younger volunteers at a back picnic table that hung out and gossiped the whole time we were there and the rest were hanging out talking by a yard sale type table of used stuffed animals and snacks. They give you a bag of treats for the animals, but every cage has small piles of them where the animals just dont care to eat it anymore. You cant get close to the cages so you either have to throw food at them or slide in down a shoot. We heard it was all volunteer run, but it was just run down, junk laying around, the grounds werent kept up, and everything needed a coat of paint. The animal cages were old and junky toys were zip tied to the outside of the cages. There is random broken patio furniture aging around, toys, its a mess. The poor animals seemed forgotten. Some begging for a little interaction, others just looking like theyve given up.
Great little spot. Donate to preserve it
Nice little place, not a lot of animals, but enough to give the kids a treat. They wanna go again, so must not be too bad, lol!
We had a fantastic time! What a wonderful sanctuary for dozens of species of primate as well as turtles parrots alligators and snakes.
This place is awesome very friendly you can bring your dogs eat lunch me and my kids go there a lot love this place
I loved this place. My daughter had a lot of fun, and their employees were amazing!
My favorite place to go!!!!! The animals are obviously very loved!!!! There are not enought great things to say!
The staff and volunteers obviously love & care for the animals. The sanctuary was much bigger than I expected. This was our first visit to the sanctuary. Next time were in FL, Id like to return and support this place.
Primate Sanctuary is a wonderful home for the many primates on premises. You will also get to view gators, turtles, parrots, tortoises, and a few loose chickens. Remember they are a 501c3 non profit so even if you cant visit please make a donation online to support the animals or find something on their Amazon wish list to help them out.
Interesting place lots of primates to see and turtles some birds and even got to hold a small gator and feed a small money. People who run it are friendly and informative. Chimps got in an argument while we were there and the lady explained a bit about why they were having a disagreement and asked us to not look at them to let them calm down. Definitely need more funding and volunteers. Definitely worth a stop if you are in the area.
Friendly workers but felt bad for monkeys. They seemed sad.
A must go! Lots of cool animals and a very cool staff! This was the highlight of our vacation!
I had a great time with my son. All the primates, birds, turtles and snakes were awesome to see. Also a garden snake that came out of the bush that was scared. I believe when more people go that way they can rev up the place for these precious animals.
The volunteers were friendly, helpful and welcoming. The animals appeared to be well cared for and content. We had the opportunity to touch/hold a gator and a snake, this added a fun and unexpected element to our visit.
Nice little place. Hope as more donations come in they can eventually build larger enclosures.
Nice place. Got mooned by a monkey my granddaughter and me laughed so hard.
Quick, fun and affordable. Worth the stop and leave a few extra dollars if youre able.
Wonderful visit. The animals seem well attended to. Well worth the visit!
Very nice people. My so learned alit. Please visit and support!
They do A great job with the funds they have, the staff were super friendly and knowledgeable . They need a lot of donations to build larger and covered cages .. wish I had thousands to give. The animals are very well cared for. Great job.
Its a nice sanctuary
Absolutely amazing experience for any age would Absolutely go again. Learned so much from Debbie, she cares so much for her animals, extremely dedicated.
Unique place but be aware that they charge 15.00 per person plus under 11 is 10.00 per child.
This place is clean and you can tell they truly.care about these animals! Price is more than reasonable and I liked how there was a back story on some of the rescues. It is great for a quick outing as it takes 45 minutes orso to go through the entire thing.
Just how I remembered it from 25 years ago quiet, Little rehab facility for some monkeys I love it
We love going here. Great that animals are treated well. Go check it out
I loved it! Everyone was so nice and Pongo was by far my favorite!!
Was great and very informative.
What a fun experience we had! The staff was so kind & the kids had a great time. Thanks! 🐵
Huge hearts by the people that work here. They make the humans feel just as loved and appreciated as the monkeys do, they are so personal and kind. God bless this place and all that they do for the planet. Debbie the owner always greets everyone with a smile and she always happy to teach the children about the animals.
Great value for admission. Worth seeing for sure!
Very fun outing and primates were very interactive.
I have certainly loved the experience of this place (used to be called The Chimp Farm) since my teen years. I recommend anyone in the area to visit this place!
Really good experience. Its been around for 75 years.
You have to go here. It was awesome
So sweet to see these animals rescued & loved.
Awesome experience. Super cheap. Happy we went!
Great places to see some monkeys and apes
