We cannot say enough good things about Hopalong and Tina. We were casually looking for just the right dog when we met Tina. She was kind enough to invite us to her home to meet her puppies where we met and fell in love with our little Marvel, he is the puppy of Mama who is mentioned below. We visited her home multiple times to play with Marvel and Tina asked us lots of questions about ourselves, our lifestyles, and how we viewed topics like discipline, health and exercise, and sleep arrangements for our dogs. She allowed us to fall in love with Marvel while making sure that we would be a good fit for him.The adoption process was smooth and we had no problems bringing our little guy home. We maintained contact with Tina and consider ourselves lucky to call her a friend. We loved our experience with Hopalong and Tina so much that a year after getting Marvel we contacted Tina about getting a sibling for our dog, and she promptly told us she had the perfect puppy for us. We have two wonderful dogs thanks to Tina and we have seen all the hard work she puts into caring for her puppies and finding them the perfect forever homes. Each dog leaves her home to a new deserving family that gives them the best possibly home because of her hard work.
We adopted our puppy from Hopalong in January 2020. She was fostered by Tina who is absolutely hands down the greatest foster any dog could have. I am floored by any negative comments. She IS picky about potential adopters and for very good reason. There are so many people out there that should never have a dog. She has a keen eye for choosing the right person. She has hand raised many puppies that were dumped that were literally days old and raised them to be amazing dogs. She is absolutely incredibly caring, and nurturing and wants the best for every dog. Her own dog has been the nanny to all the puppies and dogs she has fostered. I cannot say enough great things about this organization. They are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful foster mom.
We were so lucky to have been introduced to Hopalong through a friend. While looking for a second pup to adopt into our family, we met the team at Hopalong and the entire process was well-managed. Tina and Gary, the foster parents of our adopted Lotus, were so kind and caring during Lotus’ adoption. They were so helpful and had taken such great care of Lotus and the dogs under their care that we worried we would let them down in some way! Could not recommend Hopalong enough, and a million thanks to Tina and Gary for the love they provide for their fosters.
Tina is the best foster mom ever! Tina, Gary, and Nulo are such warm and wonderful people. They did a fantastic job helping me navigate the adoption process. It’s been difficult to get a rescue doggy during the pandemic, but because of them I have a new best friend! Tina and Gary treat each and every foster dog so well. They provide premium food for their foster babies (and even cook for them!), spoil the heck out of them, and provide the best possible interim environment for them before they go their furever homes. Tina was always accessible throughout the adoption process. The family welcomed me into their home several times to visit my baby Momo and bond with her before she was ready for me to take her home. Tina is also a fount a knowledge and gave me so much invaluable advice. Tina and Gary care so much about their foster babies and go above and beyond to ensure each and every one of them is matched well with a compatible family who will provide a loving home. I’m so grateful to them!
We adopted the most perfect dog from her foster mom, Tina. We had an old dog that we knew would not make it through another year. I met Tina at the pet store, Unleashed, on Lakeshore during a Halloween costume contest. I had our old girl with us. Tina had three foster dogs with her. They were all happy, healthy and well adjusted. I fell in love with Mama and a week later we adopted her. Mama had 6 months with our old dog, Baby (their actual names) and made the transition for all of us so much easier. Mama has been such a gift and having Tina and Gary in our lives has also been a treasure. I will only adopt dogs from Tina. She and Gary are the most committed foster parents in the world. The adoption process was extremely easy with Tina and Hopalong. Tina and I worked out a way for Mama to be in her forever home in the best possible way for us and for Mama. Mama and I have visited Tina and Gary and all the puppies they have fostered since. They are selfless when it comes to fostering found litters of tiny, tiny newborn puppies that have been abandoned in a cardboard box. They get up every two hours to eye dropper feed them, then bottle feed them, then help them grow into self-sufficient puppies. In the year and a half that I have known Tina, I think over 30 puppies (maybe more) have been successfully adopted from her. Hopalong is very, very lucky to have Tina (and Gary) in their roster of foster parents.
I walked into the petco in alameda and didnt even make it past the front door mat... I fell in love with this little runt of the litter! My boyfriend and I had to have her to an addition to our family. The staff at petco was beyond helpful but the woman I spoke with on the phone with hopalong was so warm and kind while giving us our interview. I absolutely love how their organization handles themselves! I just received my holiday packet thanking me for our adoption and varies donations. Look for your fur-ever baby through this beautiful rescue! They truly care about the animals that they care for. I adopted this beauty (Autumn) a year ago today and she is fur-sure my kitty soul mate! Thanks again hopalong!
Responding to Shawn Way on your negative review regarding “Tina being biased and unreasonable”. Not sure if you have the wrong foster? I respond to every person who wants to adopt a puppy. You definitely don’t sound like anyone I have met, I would appreciate if you can reach out to me or Hopalong if you feel rejected or misled in any way. I put 100% into my puppies, and meet all potential adopters with no ill intention. Please reach out to us.I find it hard to believe we have met.
The review by Shawn Way is incredibly misinformed and not credible. I am intimately familiar with Hopalong and know Tina, who has fostered hundreds of dogs, very well. All of dogs she has fostered have been abused or abandoned, or both. Tina spends countless hours and her own resources to nurse them back to health. The suggestion that Tina is biased is patently false. She takes great care in vetting prospective adoptive parents to ensure that the rescue will have a safe and secure forever home that works for both the adoptive parent and the rescue. From personal knowledge of her practices, I can assure readers that she is fair and unbiased in her identification of suitable adoptive parents. As for the reviewer’s claim that Tina is thwarting the adoption of “dogs out there who cannot be adopted”--that assertion is unsupported and completely inaccurate. I know firsthand that Tina finds a great home for EVERY dog that she fosters. In those rare cases where the adoption doesn’t work out, she finds another home for the rescue. People like Shawn Ray should be ashamed of themselves for maligning such a giving and caring foster parent such as Tina. Hopalong and Tina are doing an amazing public service and need to be recognized and lauded for their hard work.
Caring people finding homes for furry companions. Its rewarding to help them out and they genuinely want to find the right home for the right pet/human match. Very thorough with adoptions, and everyone clearly loves the pets. Its an honor to work with them as a foster
Actually it was they were Fast didnt stay in the Drive-Thru Lane very long the only thing is I didnt have a lot of beans they ran out LOL but actually was in my place
I adopted my terrier from Hopalong 10 years ago. Gidget (formally Bonnie) has been a great loyal canine. I wouldn’t think twice about adopting from them again.
This is both a general review and a response to someone who commented earlier today and is clearly mistaken about whom he dealt with based on his comments. Two of my three dear Hounds were from Hopalong and fostered by Tina Quon. I have know Tina for 25 years and can say without hesitation that she is one of the kindest, most generous and decent people I have known, both in and out of medicine (we met when working and training at UCSF). She and Gary have made it their mission to help countless numbers of abandoned, abused and emotionally battered Dogs under the auspices of Hopalong Rescue over the past several years, spending months at a time, and frankly a fortune to nurse these sweet souls back to a semblance of normal so they can join their forever families. Not to mention they have raised numerous wee puppies, hours and days old, to healthy happy Hounds available for adoption. After working for years as a nurse in large tertiary facilities, including in trauma at HGH, she has keen judgement when it comes to people and who would be appropriate to adopt these innocent babies who are like her own children. Everyday for years I have received emails from various animal charities telling horrible tales of unspeakable animal abuse, often at the hands of folks who should never been allowed to be around people never mind defenseless animals. Tina will only hand over her precious fosters to folks who have been properly vetted. Anything less would be a disservice to the Dogs AND to Hopalong. Hopalong works so well because of dedicated folks like Tina, Gary, and their Dog Nulo who helps in the fostering. Tinas reputation is beyond sterling, and anyone lucky enough to adopt one of her fosters should thank their lucky stars.
Informative and caring, obviously. We still have no dog but oh well.
This is a great organization, you can truly see that they have a passion for pets.
I have received a cat from them,5 years ago love her. They take care of everything from shots ect. They also use all there money to save and help Dogs and cats, foster and No kill,I recommend to help donate money, or adopt from them They truly are the BEST to help all the animals 🐕🐈🐶🐱
Wish the outside looked a lot more welcoming. Was afraid to go in due to the environment, no signage, looked abandoned & 2 drug addicts looking very sketchy, was afraid to even park :(
They are doing a wonderful job, i got my current pet from them
This is an incredible organization doing important work for animals.
Nice website, but absolutely no response to the involved questionnaires and applications they encourage you to fill out. Very disappointed the dog I wanted was adorable.
Thank you for rescuing animals!
We got our latest rescue dog (Sadie) through Hopalong. We are very very happy with our new dog and extremely impressed with Hopalongs very thoughtful and wise and effective approach. We first met and got to know Sadie at her fosters home. It was quite clear that Sadie had been treated with love and kindness throughout the process. As a result, there is no trace of trauma evidence in Sadies behavior and personality. The foster couple are two of the most kindly, loving and dedicated people Ive ever met. Everyone at Hopalong are dedicated to saving not only the dog, but also preserving its innocence and trust and sense of well-being.
This is a wonderful resource for giving away bedding, pillows and the like. VERY easy drop off. Excellent cause. Hopalong is a leader in animal rescue. A feel good worthwhile organization!
They are not very helpful i reached out to them because i had to surrender my dog of two years that i rescued from hopalong i called the number the proved online no answer online it says to email them because its faster to get a responds that is a complete lie. I called, emailed i even when up there personally and nothing after days of trying hopalong and other local rescues i had to surrender him to animal shelter which i was trying to avoid putting him i was hoping you guys wouldve been a little more helpful since i did get him from there and you guys knew story I STILL HAVENT GOTTEN A RESPONDS BACK FROM THE EMAIL I SENT. sad.
We got our puppy from this rescue and we couldn’t be happier. They were prompt to respond and get me in touch with the foster. We look forward to keeping in touch and showing how our puppy goes
I adopted two great dogs from Hopalong. They do a good job selecting dogs with nice temperments and their foster parents provide excellent write ups on the dogs too.
Alex was referred to me by a good friend of hers. She was much needed in my case. I had 3 female pets that she was always helping me to support and care for them. I appreciate Alex so much. Thank you so much for all of your support.
I love these folks!! Please go on their website if youre looking to adopt a fur baby or want to foster. An amazing, dedicated group of people!! I cant say nice enough things about them.
I H8 people
Wonderful people who guide you through the adoption process. Great to foster for. Love Alex the volunteer coordinator.
No one ever got back to me
They would not let me adopt my dogs bak after my gf who got mad and gave them to them. She does have mental issues and does things on impulse and thing was one of those things. I offered to adopt them bak cuz i can take care of them, instead they sold my dogs to someome else. Didnt even give me the slightist chance of getting them. I really loved them and was willing to take them into my care. Now i lost my 2 vest friends. This organization does not have a heart and is only worried about making money. They say tjey are nin profit yet they sold my dogs. No to metion i refered to people to them and thise 2 people zaid they never heard bak about adopting other dogs.
We contacted them to do a meet and greet. They were super helpful and very kind. We adopted the dog that very day. A few months later our normal vet noticed a heart murmur. I contacted Hopalong for medical records. They followed up and provided free care for the heart murmur. This is a very kind agency with great employees. Thanks for your hard work. Ava (formerly Xena) is very loved and spoiled rotten.
They were amazing and very helpful when we adopted our pup!
THIS IS A GREAT ORGANIZATION!!!!!It is hard to say good-bye to our cat but this shelter and the people who run it are very professional and caring. They paid for a visit to the vet for our cat and took him immediately after to find him a home :) We are so very grateful to Hopalong!
Good source
I think rescuing animals is an amazing thing and have rescued dogs before through other organizations. With my most recent rescue I attempted to go through Hopalong, however did not end up rescuing from them because of the poor experience I had. Reaching people was extremely hard and they did not reply back in a timely fashion. I didnt hear back from them for 2 weeks after they had told me I was a top choice for a dog. After emailing them and calling them several times, I finally was able to speak to someone who could not answer my question, but said she would have someone call me. I never received that call. They did send me an email, but I really needed to talk to someone in person to answer all my questions at once and in a timely fashion. Because I received the email and not a call, we had to continuously message back and forth, which was frustrating and I ended up not getting all my questions answered. I spoke to different people from the organization and would get different answers. After the call being told that I was a top candidate they then later told me it was first come first serve. I was very disappointed in the people at this place, especially since the poor communication risks the dogs finding good homes as soon as possible.
I donated bedding, quite easily! No mattresses or pillows, but they took my blankets no problem
Wonderful rescue. I have a friend who fosters for them.
I have fostered 10 kittens for Hopalong and all I can say is they are about all their charges and want the best life for these furry friends..super nice, maybe a little paperwork heavy for the adoption process, but very caring.
They dont really rescue animals. They just redirect your call to the local police department or somewhere else.
I applied for several dogs on this website and was given the run around. They wanted pictures of my house inside and out as well as a picture of me and my roommate before they would even allow me to see the pet. I very disappointed that adopting a pet has become as hard as adopting a child in Oakland when theres so many dogs are being euthanize to and are homeless I actually scanned at least 20 pages or more just in Oakland of pets that needed homes. Luckily I did adopt a beautiful little terrier dog from the Oakland animal shelter they were very welcoming. In addition to the fact that July is adopt a pet free month at the Oakland animal shelter. So sad to see so many animals go without good homes. Specially when I am a home owner and a business owner and spent a lot of time with my pets and treat them great. I hope that if youre looking for a pet you guys considered going to the Oakland animal shelter or another shelter some place that is actually intrested in helping animals find a home and not trying to judge and critique people as if theyre applying for a job to have a pet that needs a home. Shame on you guys
There is a stray kitty came to my house and doesnt want to leave! Is anyone a cat lover that want to adopt this cute black kitty!?Right now i am buying food for it but i am unable to bring it inside the house because i am allergic.Feel bad to let the cat die on the street, also dont want the cat goes to the shelter then being put to sleep later. If no one adopt his baby cat, can someone gives me the idea which shelter that “ no kill” so i can bring this baby please there ?Your help are greatly appreciated!Thank you— update about the cute stray baby!Hi everyone!Thank you for reading my review, I found a home for this kitty already, the day she leaves we cried so much but i found a good, warm, loving family for her already!Thank you for everyone support!

Great rescue for a great cause! volunteers are very nice and attentive!
A caring, passionate organization. I adopted 2 fur babies over the span of 10yrs and have nothing but good to say of both experiences.
