Great budget price for a decent experience. Lots of space. I have a pass to visit a few locations and find it really useful. Nothing like a spa club but I prefer this
You people complaining! WTH do you expect at a Y ? Do you understand the concept & tradition of this? And if you want the front Desk people to answer when you call or be helpful like a hotel then try tipping them upon check in, this is New York its not cheap here.
Overnight shift is unprofessional, its ran by James. He works 11pm -7am. James is Extremely lazy. He sleeps in between the shift. He takes Super long, to address complaints, also theres talk that he allow contraband. On site Jim needs to,be investigated about allowing drugs, into the building its unprofessional. as well puts other at risk. The YMCA Partnered with BRC to help clients meet future goals, & become self sufficient the rate is actually very successful, at helping others going through a temporary hardships, its sad that James puts others at risk with illegal activities.
Ive been there for a days in March and the experience was not great. Everything seemed very dirty and there were actually mice in my room. But the worst thing about this were the mice in the heater because they were so loud I couldnt sleep at night. The only good thing was the location and the price was okay, but Id definitely not recommend staying there if you want to get some sleep
Perfect! Like a dorm room in college, hostel style facility and super clean! Its quiet, has security, nice & efficient staff, full gym access w pools, steam and sauna rooms + massages available.Yes, the heater does have a hourly banging noise but after night 2, I could sleep through it.
This is a very hospitable place for the youth with their after school programs at their gym. I would recommend this to all LOCALS.
👀
Great place to quick crash over the weekend. Friendly desk service, helpful cleaning service. Price for nyc is excellent!
Rooms are small and potentially a struggle for two staying with large suitcases. Would be good to have had more washing areas to cope with higher demand hours. For staying on Manhattan Island itself, this is a very cost effective way of being near everything you need, but if you can afford to spend a few dollars more per night, then do.
If you’re on a budget and just need somewhere decent to sleep/shower for a weekend New York trip - I would highly recommend just staying here. It’s not a fancy hotel so don’t expect amenities of that sort. Rooms are small but that’s a given, since it’s the city. It’s surprisingly clean, well insulated (warm and cozy during the wintertime) and sharing the bathroom/ shower area on your floor will bring back memories of your college dorm room days. There were some plumbing issues on the bathroom on my floor but it wasn’t a big deal. There are additional rest rooms and showers in the downstairs gym/ pool area that you can use as well. Also, it’s very safe with security guards screening ppl at the front. This was perfect for us and we saved a lot of money that we used on eating good food instead! Thanks YMCA!
I was a little nervous to stay here because the reviews were so mixed, but honestly, its not as bad as many of the reviews say! Its basically what I expected-- a no-frills hostel room above a YMCA. Yes, the staff was usually grumpy, and yes, the rooms are pretty basic, but if youre on a budget it really cant be beat. And hey, you can even use the pool. The room was small, but not as small as I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised to find that it even had a writing desk and mini-fridge. The room was spotless and they even changed my towels and sheets every day. I was glad Id booked a room with a sink, as the bathroom situation was a little weird. Not sure how it was on other floors, but on mine there were only two womens bathrooms for the whole floor. One only had two showers in it, and the other had two toilets, three open showers (without shower curtains), and one sort of shower closet behind a closet door. The two-shower bathroom was periodically locked, so I had to choose between baring it all in one of the curtain-less showers or hoping that no one peeped the window on the closet shower. I opted for the closet shower, although the setup was still weird enough that in order to actually get my towel, I had a quick brave moment of whipping open the closet door and hoping no one walked in while I exposed myself. So, would this be my top choice for staying in NYC? Oh no. But would I consider staying here again? Surprisingly....yes. And maybe next time Ill actually have time to use the sauna.Oh, one more thing--when I booked it, I was thinking it was right next to Grand Central station. Not the case. Its about a 10-minute walk.
They have single room option which was great. They also have a gym and a place where you can do work. However, when I stayed, the code machine to the bathroom door was not working. We couldn’t use the toilet during the night and we had to go down one floor. The location wasn’t very convenient.
The room was tiny with bunk beds so I had to sleep separeted from my husband but we didnt mind for 2 nights because the location compensated this problem. We didnt need to use the subway because many things were just around within a few minutes walking (Chrysler building, Grand Central Station, Rockefeller Center, Empire State Building, Times Square, Central Park etc. The common aeras were clean and ok, even gym and swimming pool is offered but we didnt have time to use it in 2 days. Id recommend.
This place is good for wheelchairs with low budgets. The standard rooms are very small, but accessible with an usual manual wheelchair. The more expensive but more comfortable rooms should have more space for bigger wheelchairs(electrical ones). There are also accessible showers equipped with chairs for showering on the 4th floor. Two elevators gives you also a safe way to the rooms with a wheelchair. Accessible toilets are on each floor. In general also a nice accommodation for low budgets. Not overwhelming but a good cheap way for a stay in the central of manhattan.
I am absolutely disappointed. Although our stay was solely paid cash the hostel charged 260$ on my credit card without my permission two days after I checked out. There is no reaction on any e-mails that I sent. I do not recommend to stay there. Do not give any credit card information!
ANGELA at the checking in desk was so sweet and helpful. She definitely made a big difference for my whole stay at the YMCA VANDERBILT. There was never a day that Angela wasn’t able to help with my requests for either information about town or about the facilities.THANK YOU ANGELA, I WILL BE BACK.Every hotel deserves a nice sweet smiley person like you.Jose
I just returned from a three night stay -- two nights, a trip to Massachusetts, and then another night. I recommend it without hesitation. The place is spotlessly clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The location, a couple of blocks from the United Nations (and some of the worlds most expensive residences), yet with plenty of modestly priced food options in an easy walk, cannot be matched anywhere. Why are there some negative reviews on the site? Trolls, I think. They almost scared me away. I am very glad they did not. [Obviously, everything is simple. If you want to stay at the Pierre, expect to pay accordingly.]
The location was ideal! I traveled by myself so small room didnt bother me. Bed was surprisingly comfy. didnt have a chance to use the gym but it looks so good. highly recommended for those solotravelers!!
The overall experience was pretty well. The room was clean and they were changing the towels every day. We went in November and the weather was very cold but in our room we had a heater which was working well. Sometimes it was even too hot in the room. There are 2 showers and restrooms in each floor and we never had any problem with it. Now the cons. The hotel staff seemed a little bit unorganized and not professional. The rooms don’t have safety boxes, so if you want to leave your documents, you can leave them at the administrative desk where they have a small safety box, but they won’t let you to take it and you will need to disturb the staff every time you want to put in and out your stuff. And the last one, they charge 2$ for a piece of luggage to look after it after your check out.
Awful. I wasnt expecting much given its a hostel but for $85 it was a waste of money. Tiny room without any heat control for the radiator, thin blankets, and hallway/street noise into the wee hours of the night.Be aware that the heat radiator also likes to spaz out every hour and its really loud.If youre looking for a place to stay spend the extra $15-20 bucks a night for a legitimate hotel nearby.
If you are on a budget and dont mind shared facilities, its not a bad option. I never had to wait for the toilet or shower even though it is shared with the whole floor. The window AC unit was sufficient and kept the room nice and cold. Towels and linens were changed daily and the bathroom was kept quite clean.
The rooms are so tiny so that you need to stand next to each other and have to go to the end of the room if one of the people needs to pass. The room didnt have an air conditioner, just a small fan that partially worked, it was hard to breath in the room.Paint was coming off the walls and white shreds kept falling on us.The shower was super contaminated with bugs, and the water stream was very weak. When checking out, you actually have to pay 2$ for each bag you want to keep in the luggage room. The management & service was very lacking and rude. we got woken up in the middle of the night by one of the workers as he asked us to stop using our electricity plugs, he woke us up with loud knocks on the door and didnt even apologize, And when we asked to get a room with good electricity plugs, they did not respond and did not give us any alternative, we had to charge our laptop & phones at Starbucks every morning. Aswell, the manager was unreachable, and in the first day, according to them, was non-existant. At the end they let us speak with the building manager. In conclusion - Id stay away from this hotel. Despite its being cheap and in a great location, I wouldnt recommend anyone staying there. Avoid at all cost.
This place is indicated as “hostel” but this place is much more than that. The rooms or ok for that price and you even have a fridge! You get new towels and a fresh bed everyday. The bathrooms are shared but you never have to wait and are really clean. I’ll definitely go here again!
This place leaves a lot to be desired. Way too hot, shared showers and rooms are the size of a cupboard. You get a bed and thats it. Most rooms dont have a ladder for the top bunk. However staff were helpful when we got locked out.
The place was perfect in location, and within walking distance from the E subway. Lots of bars, restaurants in surrounding area. Short walking distance to all the midtown sites and subway away from all the others. My husband and I appreciated the low cost stay which allowed us to do more in New York. Keep in mind, this is a hostel so its a place to lay your head to sleep, with very basic necessity, theres no glamour to the place and that was just fine with us. Its all about the CITY anyway. Thank you Vanderbilt, YMCA.
Best accommodation for budget conscious travelers. The rooms were well worn, but I was happy for the price.
It gets the job done. The rooms are small, but if youre going out and about and mostly using it for sleeping then its fine! Its good 15-20 min walk from Times Square, so thats a good place to start. They provide you with towels for the showers and housekeeping comes to get trash and make beds. So if you plan on barely being in your room and need something cheap, this is great. You also have access to the gym and pool (but only if you have a swim cap for the pool).
The staff was plain rude. You cannot check in early. The radiator makes so much noise about every hour so at night expect to wake up numerous times. Shared bathroom was dirty. The location is good but hopefully everything is right with your room because staff wouldn’t help at all. Overall, good price would have been better but staff needs to make a good impression.
As a lifelong New Yorker and member of The YMCA in NYC since 1983 I can say unequivocally that this is the best YMCA in NYC. They have a great 25 yard lap swimming pool and gym with everything youd need in a gym, including Spin classes. There are a slew of other classes including swim classes for beginners, yoga, and exercise dance classes. They have a sauna and steam room to use. It is centrally located in the heart of the City and near Grand Central Station. If you live on the East Side of Manhattan, this is the YMCA you should go to.
Rooms were clean and suitable for short stay. Onsite staff were okay. It was very difficult to book rooms. No ones answers the published phone line and no one responds to voice messages or emails. An electronic device was left in a drawer. When reported shortly after check-out, neither housekeeping nor security had discovered the device and we’ve had no follow-up call since our stay. Has the potential to be a really nice place to stay for trips to NYC.
You get what you pay for.Always had a good time here (3 stays).Yes, the rooms are very small but always clean. Employees are super friendly and the gym is perfectly equipped! Plus the location is just steps away from midtown Manhattan so this is the perfect starting point for all your NYC adventures.
Ok I just got a question about it is good for a weekend get away and I had to answer yes or no. What? If you want to a room that is part of the experience the answer is NO. If you want a place to sleep and spend minimum time there this is a great clean economical place. However you will find plenty of deals on non holiday weekends in near by hotels. It is a great location, highly functional, clean. It is a million miles from luxury.
The rooms are so tiny so that you need to stand next to each other and have to go to the end of the room if one of the people needs to pass. Good value for what you are paying. The rooms were small but clean. We had to use a communal washroom which was rarely busy so my friend and I mostly had it to ourselves when we needed to shower and get ready. It also has a gym, which looked nice, but we didnt use it. Its biggest asset is location. Its right in midtown so its close to numerous attractions and things to do and its very close to subway stations with Grand Central which makes getting around Manhattan very convenient. I would stay here again if I visit NYC in the future.
After a long flight over the Atlantic ocean,in a large group of 36 people, we arrived at the Vanderbilt YMCA. While we were waiting in the lobby we were constantly being asked by the conciarege to move due to little waiting area or sitting area. Dispite the YMCA claiming they are suited for large groups they lack the space for first arrivals. We then went up to are room which took a while but we were able to use the lift. When we opened are dorm room we were greeted by a room smaller than a parking space (for a country thats loves big cars and big homes/ buildings, being greeted by a room not much bigger than 3m x 3m). We were sharing a 2 person bunk bedroom which on first look wasnt too bad not a place if I was booking it myself Id stay but I put up with it. And the room which I was staying in was actually one of the biggest in the group. The bunk beds were on wheel which we were OK with we just assumed that the bed was locked. I then climbed up to the top of the bunk bed ( up the frame as half the rooms didnt come with ladders) the bed started moving but it was only slight. I then whilst up there went to put my back against the wall when the bed started to move and I started to fall down the back it was only for my friend being down their that I didnt fall down the back possibly breaking my back or neck, and he was able to quickly push the bed against the wall. We then quickly went down to the lobby where they sent a guy from maitance up to see the bed. He was a very kind man but said there was nothing that he could do to stop the bed rolling around the room. He then called down to the lobby to see if there was another room available for us to stay in.We then moved to a smaller room but at least the bed wasnt moving. On the floor there were shared toliets and showers which Ive got to say in the 21st century it is not something that we see that often anymore. Although we did learn that on the 5th and 4th floor there were private toilets and showers that could be locked. The night. The mattresses were extremely rough and only one pillow was provided and when I went downstairs they said they couldnt give me anymore because the lady was about to finish. So I set in to my nights sleep of which I got probably 1 hour before I was awoken by the pipes above. And couldnt sleep the rest of the night. The following night I was able to get 3 extra pillows which did help me get to sleep but still had a rough night and only got around 4 hours.By the final night Id came a customed to the bed and actually managed to get a ok night sleep.( Although some point through out this stay I was bitten several times by fleas, dont even know when). The actual gym facilities were very nice, small but nice and I couldnt complain about them. Not sure if the facilities up the second lift were needed but they were nice non the less. The staff also were very nice. But sometimes seemed arrogant and occasionally rude.
Feels like a college dormitory! Just blocks from the Empire State building and still the cheapest room in Manhattan. Small, clean, very affordable motel-style rooms with floorwide shared bathrooms/showers. Excellent choice for the single traveler. Room has a twin bed, desk, A/C heater, TV, and minifridge. My room was approximately 8 by 12.
In The private room the shower doesnt work. It hasnt worked in a long time, you can tell.Good price n location. They should make some maintenance.
I booked a private room in this hostel for my mother. Indeed, it was between Christmas and NYE and everything was full or above 1k per night. I had no other choice but booking a room there.First of, I emailed them multiple times to try to book an airport transfer for my mother but all the emails sent remain unanswered. She was put in a tiny nasty room where wifi signal was so poor that she had to get out of the room to another floor to get a decent signal to call me.The morning of her checkout, my boyfriend met her at the hostel (around 7am) to bring her out for breakfast then collect her belongings after breakfast and bring her to the airbnb I rented for our NY stay (she arrived 1 day before us hence the booking of a room there).Keep in mind that we booked a PRIVATE room. They met in the lobby, and she informed the woman at the counter that she was bringing my boyfriends suitcase to her PRIVATE room in order to avoid carrying the suitcase to the Starbucks. That woman (chubby black woman - I dont have her name), started yelling at my mother. She could have calmly informed her that she could not but no she shouted at my mother and verbally abused her). My mother is 60 years old and severely sick. Any stressful interaction has a negative impact on the spreading of her illness. How can an employee speak in this manner to any customer, but more importantly to someone way older than you ?I am disgusted by the way she was treated in this hostel.
Cant beat the location for the value. Its a shared bathroom so def not first class living, and the staff is, well, theyre new yorkers. Dont expect a longer answer than yes or no. Bring your own soaps if you dont like dial, and plenty of excellent food all within 15 min walk.
We checked in and the room looked like a jail cell. Do NOT stay here. We spent 540.00 for 4 days and walked in our room and heartbroken it was that bad. We ended up going to a different hotel, we lost our monies but it was worth it we ended up goingin a real hotel. DONT STAY HERE PLEASE!!! Save your monies!!!
Just don´t go there, it is a bad joke. The rooms are tiny, which is often the case in NYC only these rooms seem to be even smaller. Plus, what´s even worse: There were only 2 showers available for all the ladies on the entire floor and only 2 restrooms. I would rather spend some more money for a decent room than go to the YMCA Vanderbilt ever again.
This is the closest thing to a hostel Ive seen here in the US. It PERFECT for trying to save money and not caring to have a hotel. The best way to describe what you get is a super small dorm room with room service for towels. You will need to take your shampoos, shower shoes and all things toiletries but towels you will get. Once again think old style dorm room situation and you will know what you are walking into. Very clean, very safe and in a very good location in east Midtown!
One of the greatest places to workout. Employees are very nice and are willing to come to customers aid. Also take extra pro caution when someone is injured--from personal experience. Gym equipment is in good conditions. Its location is also very nice and now Im a regular.
Very bad front desk experience of this YMCA. Their accounting system is bad and doesnt support online payment well. They charged me extra money. When I called back to ask for refund, it takes forever. Their membership is also not good. The private class teacher changes your scheduled class time at last minute, which gave me lots of trouble.
Super clean bathrooms. I was really surprised with the facilities. The room that I got was really small (maybe not the best idea after visiting Alkatraz 😁) but the bed was comfortable. I would recommend it to someone that knows NY as the stuff has to deal with gym customers at the same time so theres no typical tourist service with recommended places to see etc
Very bad service. Receptionists and security are very rude and impolite which does not help at all to enjoy holidays in the city. I don’t recommend this hotel. If you as me choose this hotel for the price and location be ready to be treated with zero politeness.
Quality for the price. Good location, easy walk to time square. Shared bathrooms didnt lock like stated on site. Bring your own pillows if you like any support under your head.
To start off, the location is amazing. Two minutes from the subway, lots of good restaurants and even a few museums quite in the vicinity. However, the staff is very grumpy and does not seem to want to be working here at all. The mens showers are big and clean, the womens however are small and dirty, and cant even be locked. We constantly only used the mens showers. Theres a public kitchen and a few vending machines, and attached to the hotel is a (members only) gym.
Great location

I just arrived to this place and Im so disappointed. Its not mentioned anywhere on the site that there are NO RESTROOMS and no showers in the rooms! It took me several hours to look for a inexpensive one night stay in Manhattan, and there were many places much cheaper than this one that had amenities on the floor. I paid $30 extra for Vanderbilt because it looked like there were all amenities in the individual rooms according the description. The website didnt mention anywhere that there was no even a restroom in the room. And for well over $100 a night there should be! I need to use a bathroom several times a night and having to go somewhere else to use it is an extreme inconvenience. Its also very noisy here - there are people in the hallways and the doors are slamming all the time late at night. The room itself is just a little bit bigger than a locker, LOL. The matress is firm - probably the only good thing here. And so far the staff was nice. Well they make big money for very little.
I really dont understand all of the negative comments. People, it is a hostel in centre of NYC. The price is half of what hotels around are offering, so what are you expecting?!We got nice room for 2 people, with window, chest of drawers for all our clothes and comfy bed. There were 3 bathrooms in really good standard cleaned few times per day just next to us. Rooms were cleaned daily and towels replaced on daily basic. It is not a 5* hotel but amazing if you want to have nice place to sleep and be in centre! If somone has negative comments, I would recommend booking something in higher price because this place is great for travelers wanted it see world in cheap way :)
Great budget option for those who want to stay in the heart of NYC without spending a fortune. Facilities may be basic, but everything is clean and staff are helpful. If you just need somewhere to get your head down, this is for you.
If you want a cheap, no thrills, place to stay in Manhattan this is it. But you will compromise. Shared bathrooms with 4 showers and 2 toilets for a floor of 60 rooms, although I never had to wait Id worry in busy seasons. Hasnt seen a lick of paint in a while and not exactly modern standards but it provided a bed in the city for 3 nights at a rate far below nearby hotels, you get what you pay for. Room is small but did the job, I was in twin bunk beds so cant comment on the dorms. The most annoying thing was a requirement to wear swim caps when using the pool, which they sell for $10 and you have to be a member to stay which they helpfully charge you $10 a night you stay on top of advertised fees. Would be more honest if they included that in the posted price.
The rooms are tiny, but you know that going in. They are also clean with comfortable beds. I wish there were a few more bathrooms. You may have to wait during peak times...The staff was friendly. While it wont be for everyone, I can see staying here again on future NYC trips.
Employees were rude, rooms were disgusting and had not been properly cleaned and was not allowed to bring up a guest to our room for even 5 minutes. Definitely would never stay again
Rooms were small but the location was good its near the city center. Stayed here for 4 nights, I remembered going for a swim on one of the days. It was quite crowded as there were lessons were going on.
Since I work around the corner, my husband and I sends my son there for camp. Its easy for me to take him with me, drop him off and head to work. Its his second year and so far hes loving it.
Clean rooms and good location. Basic hotel option if you choose a private room (not ensuite). Overall its a good place to staff without spending a lot of money.
The rooms are clean and the tv has all of the main channels, but they are a little small and the windows are single paned so it can be quite cold in the winter. The service is discreet, rooms were clean after leaving for a day. The hostel is situated nicely making it easy to travel to all main exhibitions downtown.
I didnt realize the bathrooms and showers were not in the bedroom area. Minifridge provided was nice. Would not recommend it if you have back problems. The beds are similar to college dorms. Generally though, this was a good deal for the price.
Listen very carefully kids, Im here to help so that you dont do the same mistake I did. I get why you want to stay here: Its cheap and has a good location, right? I understand, thats what I wanted too. Believe me though, If I knew what it actually was, I wouldnt have come here. Where do i start? Rude and unprofessional staff, squeaky bed and doors, thin walls so you literally hear every single teenager on the floor screaming, dirty carpets, room is the size of a shoebox, the AC and the fridge make noises that wont let you sleep and, most importantly, the most disgusting bathrooms I have ever seen in my entire life. Ive been to a lot of hostels and motels around the world, never in my life have I seen such horribly maintained place. First of all, 2 toilets for the whole floor? Are you kidding me? Second of all, does anybody clean them? The smell you get when you enter the showers will make you gag and theres no water pressure. Theres NO WATER. Theres no privacy either. This place is basically a prison so stay away from it. You dont have the money to afford a better place? No problem, postpone your trip, save 200$ and book somewhere else. I guarantee your trip will be ruined if you stay here. This place is SO DIRTY it should be illegal ... and if you gave this place 5 stars, youre an idiot and should not be a local guideTo top it all, they charge their own guests 2$ to store luggage hah!
Staff was nice. Room was clean though very small. Dorm room small. Bed clean and very comfortable. Bathroom clean in the semi private ones. Besides the size, it was a good stay.
I would be very careful staying here if I were you. Wear flip flops in the shower. Also, don’t leave ANYTHING in the dresser, even when you are staying there. Housekeeping will throw everything out. I went out for a day to find out that all of my receipts and notes were gone. The front desk said there was nothing they could do about it, but that I just shouldn’t keep anything I don’t want thrown out anywhere about the room. So, literally, you have to live out of your suitcase here.
Reception could be betterAs a member of Y you have to stay in the same line with tourists waiting for check in in the hotel. I had some membership problem. After staying for a while in line, the REP. could not help me, instead gave me a business card with a phone to contact their manger. The manager never picked up the phone, neither call me back (after I left a voicemail) or answer on my e-mail. Shame on you guys! You a charging unfortunate amount of money for the membership and have such a terrible service.*** A FEW WEEKS LATER GET IN TOUCH WITH THE BOSS-PROBLEM SOLVED!IS THAT REALLY SHOULD GO THIS WAY?
Checking into this hostel is an awful way to start a vacation staff was so rude, and didn’t try to accommodate us at all. We arrived at 2:30 check is what at 3. They made us wait until 3 without calling to see if any rooms were already cleaned and ready to go. We finally check in room is like a dorm room, clean. Shared bathroom is kinda dirty.. beds were very uncomfortable but not expecting much for price. We go to sleep after long day walking and are woken up multiple times throughout the night due to loud noises that sound as if pots and pans are being clanked together in your closet, later thinking it was the radiator. Overall for the price it wasn’t bad, and I wouldn’t be disappointed if the staff was friendly. Wouldn’t stay here again.
I love the Y! Full service, clean.HOWEVER, there is one hospitality agent there (hispanic female, last name Andrade?) Who is ABRUPT and RUDE. I did not enjoy interacting with her at all! Her demeanor was far more suggestive of a burnt out prison guard.
Great gym in a great location. For those complaining about the hotel, clearly no ones ever informed you that you get what you pay for. If you want five-star amenities, go stay at the Ritz. If you want to be a cheapskate, then go ahead and lower your expectations.
Great location, bathrooms always perfectly clean. Would stay again.
I stayed at the Vanderbilt YMCA 20 years ago.At that time I was very pleased with the cleanliness and care that this old building had. The $19/day price was wonderful & the location just GRAND! Judging by my experience, then, Ive decided to once again give the Vanderbilt another chance to prove itself! Its STILL a great value & after all, most people are just looking for a clean, inexpensive, overnight lodging! After my stay in a few months, I might change my mind about what Ive said here, but then, I was much younger in 1988 & many things are suject
This is my go to place in NYC when I need a place to stay. I have stayed at nicer hotels, but the value I get staying at the YMCA Vanderbilt is amazing. I book directly with them, and can usually call to see if I can upgrade on the room (they have recently redone a few of the floors) - I dont mind sharing a bathroom and love the fact that I have access to the full facility, including a steam room and sauna. Did I mention that its in an amazing location? Steps away from the UN and Grand Central Station. There are fantastic restaurants in either direction when you walk out the door on the avenues. Absolutely love it. Looking forward to my next stay.
If you are not picky and just want a place to stay in beautiful NYC this is a great choice. Rooms are nice and clean and so are bathrooms (although latter ones are shared I must say). The place has common-use spaces such as a dining room, kitchen, etc. For the quality/price I found the YMCA to be a perfect choice! You also have access to gym and all the amenities. People at the entrance desk were super friendly and courteous. One critique would have to be the wifi, could not get it working on my room which was on third floor I think. Will definitely return when in NYC!
For $100 a night you get a room in the middle of Manhattan, near the Grand Central Terminal & Bryant Park. The front desk personnel are often not so friendly. The rooms are clean, the shared bathrooms not so clean and the bed is a simple twin mattress on a metal/wood frame - no boxspring. The AC is adequate and the heat can be overly ambitious (the pipes bang.) Free WIFI.The CVS and the corner deli (Bread & Butter) are nearby. The YMCA workout facilities are available to be used by hotel guests - the equipment is top notch. If you stay here I recommend you bringing an inflatable pillow, ear plugs, wipes, possibly a light blanket and a sense of adventure. Most folks who use the YMCA hotel are younger, I’m 54. Being a single female I feel safe staying here. This was the view from my room - I could see the Chrysler Building.
Im a young guy in excellent health and after a night on the beds here I was walking like an 80 year old man, my back was wracked with pain. Not sure of this place is appreciably worse than others that are this cheap but if so the extra money is definitely worth it for a good nights sleep.
I spent 8 nights here and the comfort was pretty good. The common areas (bathroom, toilet) are cleaned daily, which does not prevent some dirt. Of course, you should not expect luxury when you pay a low price like YMCA Vanderbilt.
Security guards are RUDES, they dont wanna help you if you are foreign. The room is good the bathrooms are great.
The room is tiny. Bed is shaking back and forward. Bathrooms are dirty. Only personnel was good
I stayed there on a school trip and there were human feces in the shared shower. I dont understand how this happened because the showers were in a separate room to the toilet and sink. Additionally, once we reported it we left for a few hours to go and get dinner and when we came back and checked they still hadnt cleaned it up. Also, there was gum on the headboard of my bunkbed which wasnt new because it was yellow. DISGUSTING!
Service is fine but the vibe of the place is not great. It doesn’t look very clean either.
I would definitely stay here again. My sister and i booked a room for one night while we were in the city seeing A broadway show. We were only staying in NY one night so this was perfect for what we needed. We had a place to drop off our bags, take a quick shower and come back and sleep after our show. The rooms are dorm room sized so if you want a lot out of a hotel this wouldnt be grest but if all you need is a comfy bed to sleep in this is perfect. Its close go grand central station and a 20 minute walk away from times square so i definitely loved how easy it was to get and from places while we were there
Oh come on....what do people expect for the price? this is great accomodation..clean sheets, towels and bedding everyday. Sure the room is small and basic, but the central location is excellent! I dont tend to spend too much time in my hotel room when in New York, I just want somewhere clean and pleasant to crash out. I take student parties of 40 + and havent had one negative comment after 6 visits.
Good community YMCA. I mostly use it for the gym, but the kids take swim lessons here as well. Its worth noting that there is child care available at popular work out times. Its a great deal for what you get.
I was not using the gym to workout, but I did attend for a continuing education credit for my personal training certification. The gym did appear neat and clean as well as having proper security at the front desk to direct me where I needed to be.
I stayed in this hostel for three weeks that are luckily finished today. The room was so tiny that me and my roommate didnt know where to put our luggage. My rooms door didnt work properly and sometimes the key stopped working for no reasons at all.We didnt have a mirror and there was only one bathroom for the whole third flour (there are approximately 30 rooms on each flour), which of course was always occupied. Also the kitchen was small, not fully equipped and overcrowded (one kitchen for 10 flours).Apparently housekeeping only consist in making the bed because I had the same dirty on the flour for three weeks. What made me angry the most is that, after I checked out, I asked the staff if I could leave my luggage for 10 minutes and they told me I had to pay a ticket. For 10 bloody minutes! The location is very convenient but it doesnt worth it.
This is a good place when you are just looking for a place to sleep in a good location for a reasonable price. However it still feels expensive but thats NYC I guess.Everything is clean and I felt comfortable. There are only a few bathrooms but I never had to wait so no complaints. The only thing I was really disappointed about were the checkin. The guy at the reception was really unfriendly. I felt uncomfortable to bother him with my check in.Overall I would say I would stay there again.
I have been a member for close to 15 years, and through the years not only has the Vanderbilt Y been my fitness safe haven, but I gained lifelong friends. Ive had memberships at MANY gyms, and in fact, I actually stopped my membership and realized that nothing compares to the Vanderbilt Y so I returned.
I had scheduled a group stay of 22 people to stay at this facility. We originated in Chicago, and planned to stay there. After a flight cancellation, we were no longer able to stay, and there was no room at all for them to work with us for a reimbursement, even a partial one. They were however, happy to reschedule us for a different day. It was very sketchy treatment and the manager, Tom, was quite rude when trying to reschedule. I am not saying that the value is bad, but I am saying that if anything goes awry, they are not to be trusted.
This place is more of a fitness center than an hostel. Hairdryers are at the lockers so you have to get down few floors after your shower to get your hair dry. Unfriendly staff. I got also charged $35 dollars extra so watch out your bill ! Common space are really raw and same as showers i.e. no shelves, no hangers. Also very noisy and cold if you don’t ask to turn the heater on.
Good place to stay. Quiet, good location. However, do not except 5 star hotel experience.
Worst experience ever in an hotel! Full of teenagers making noise and closing doors hardly at any time. No one will do anything, even if you say something at the lobby. First time I felt I got stolen, paying 138usd for one night its a theft. Shared unhealthy restrooms and showers for that money? Definitely you are doing a big business Vanderbilt YMCA 👏👏👏
Cleaners begin as early as 830am. Showers moldy and smelled. no toilet paper in toilets for 2 days in a row. heating system in the building extremely old and periodically rattles so loudly it vibrates the walls (once every hour or so). Front desk security staff rude, WIFI patchy. forced to pay a 10$ daily fee for the pool/gym regardless of whether you use it. Drinking fountains broken. The common room/lounge for a place with hundreds of rooms/people is a single tiny room with about 7 seats in it. Kitchen is tiny and has almost nothing in it. the first night we were there our light constantly flickered on and off - maintenance staff said if someone was using a hairdryer in another room it could affect the lighting.... The location of this place is great but thats it. We paid around $150 USD a night for 2 bed room, not sure what the proper dorms are like. Ive been around the world and to countless hostels etc, and regardless of its location, somewhere with the YMCA brand and for that price you cant have that pathetic level of service and building maintenance.
Great midtown location. Gym has updated equipment, areas are kept up well and clean. It usually is not too crowded.
I was here mainly to use the gym. They had every machine imaginable, but the layout was a little convoluted as a first time guest. Had I not been with a friend, I wouldnt have known where to go for certain machine. Its nice that they have a basketball court and pool, which are hard to find in NYC.
I am very insulted at the way one of the employees treated me today. I asked him if we can get a form to fill out in order to sign in to this ymca because we attend a different ymca in New York. We go into the line and wait 30 minutes just to hear this extremely rude and racist employee tell us to “take out our ids if you are telling us the truth.” Mind you that we are both black teenagers who came in to lift weights for an hour and a half. This overweight slightly tall African American with short hair rudely tells us that we are clearly lying to him that we are members of a ymca as if we are these RANDOM HOODLUMS who just walk into this community center and sneak ourselves in. I felt racially, and emotionally attacked at the comment this extremely ignorant, rude and impatient man told us today. I could not put into words how emotionally irritated I was to have this unintelligent member of staff tell us that we would lie to him about being members BECAUSE HE SAW THAT WE WERE THESE BLACK WELL-GROOMED TEENAGERS who just want to exercise and go home. If this incident ever occurs again I will be speaking to the manager of this establishment to file a complaint of speaking to us as if we are these uneducated, bad mouth young men that society stereotypes black teenagers as. I am a college student attending NYU to become an actor who lives in a middle class household with other well educated and successful people and as a young inspired artist I need to address this issue because I did not bring myself this high in my life as a man who graduated with a 3.5 out of 4 gpa and as a young national honor student to be stereotyped in a place that people go to in order to feel safe AS A COMMUNITY. AND IF THIS WERE TO EVER CONTINUE I WILL BRING THIS UP WITH MY PARENTS AND WITH AN ATTORNEY. Thank you and have a beautiful night!
The rooms looked like a mexican prison, but cheap and good location
Just reviewing the gym. Its very well equipped. An entire big room with machines and a small one for free weights (that gets even smaller during peak season). Two swimming pools (water is barely warm). Locker/showers/sauna are pretty good and clean. Big cardio room, basketball court (dont know if standard size) and a big saloon for aerobics. Personnel at the front desk is a bit rough and indifferent; I knew only one PT with the attitude of giving some simple advice (yes I know one should pay for that: but SIMPLE advice, come on...). Security guards seems to be having a bad time there.
Too much expensive.
This is the worst hotel where I had ever been. Rude arrogant personnel, dirty old badrooms. Hallway didnt smell good. Terrific AC systemVending machines stole me money three times and staff didnt care about it
Worst place to stay in!! Very unfriendly and unprofessional staff members who dont even smile to the guests, rooms are too small to fit 2 people to the extent that one person has to sit on the bed so that the other can move.. the elevator is always crowded and you have to wait for over 5 mins to be able to find a spot and go up or down! Bathrooms stink and floors are always wet.. dont ever think of staying at this place.
I belonged to the gym here a long time ago. They have a basketball court, pool, decent gym equipment. Great place.
