Bid on several lots in The Early West Auction 8/27/2021. Left absentee bids but then followed the auction on the Bonhams App. I was winning a lot, then suddenly I lost to a phone bidder for the amount I bid !! I would have raised my bid if I was given the opportunity. I was told by Darren Sutherland it was a glitch, and plus my bid was “just an emergency bid”The is unfair to me and to Theresa and her daughters, I would have continued bidding.
Bonhams has a terrific and global, hardworking staff. Their sourcing in all departments is phenomenal. With recent covid restrictions, and protecting clients and staff, the auction house rises up to meet the new / new. Sourcing is extraordinary because it is not copy cat and strives to bring more rare or soon to be trending - works to light. And upgrades in IT (for online auctions and live online auctions) and client services departments have been implemented. Shipping, is the responsibility of the Buyer. Bonhams estimates are 3rd party quotes, and Bonhams Buyers can always decline the estimate and research/set up their own. Ship quotes are offered gratis for the customer, with an art shipper, that picks up, packs and ships. 5 STARS!

They really earned this one.Not only is the online premium outlandish, the shipping quotes are equally as criminal. An item which can carefully be placed into a Large flat rate box for $15.50 was quoted to me for $260.Even if this item was coming from overseas, the shipping would still not equal to $260 for this item. Somebody certainly is squeezing out as much cash as possible from their customers.Good luck getting your stuff.
BUYER BEWARE! I placed a bid on a sketch by Klimpt after reviewing Bonhams write up. The day before the auction, without advising me, they CHANGED their note to state that the signature on the sketch was fake. They left my bid (which was based on the premise that the signature was real) and no-one else placed a bid on the lot. I got stuck with a fake. BEWARE of what they tell you about their items!!
Outlandish shipping cost for a tiny object. Very slow to ship. I was asking for a condition report over 2 weeks ago and have yet to receive it. Dont buy anything here; buyer beware

Christina was helpful in listing our rare book. Initial response was very good. The book did not meet reserve price after a couple of attempts. Our disappointment is not that it did not sell. Most of the disappointment was in the process to return the book. There was very poor communication. Lots of voice mails and not my job type people.Shipping return was twice what we paid to send it to Bonhams and they said that is our cost. I find that hard to believe.I consider 3 average so I am rating Bonhams at slightly below average.
Bought 2 photos at auction in New York on April 26. For a small envelop to be shipped to Paris, Bonhams quoted with Fedex their sole transporter $645 or 15% of the photos price. This is added to the 25% Bonham fees would have represented 43% on top of auction price... UPS quoted $133 but is not accepting the pickup in New York requested from France : a nightmare ! NEVER AGAIN
You need to keep pestering the blonde lady at the front of the basement pickup window desk, if you bought an antique, otherwise shell forget youre waiting in line for her. Even if there is only one patron in front of you. Tsk tsk
