Beautiful property, great location and excellent staff and service. Ali and Kyle are especially helpful!
This building has continuous problems with the alarm system. The lobby alarm has beeped continuously for days and weeks at a time since I moved in two years ago. The issue has never been fixed, and management, maintenance, and emergency maintenance never keeps their promises to follow up with residents. The sound makes the community room and exercise room advertised as amenities useless, as the constant shrieking is extremely unpleasant to endure. The building has been evacuated twice, once in the middle of winter and once at 4am, due to issues with the faulty alarm and again, residents received no follow up. As of today, an alarm has been going off in the lobby continuously for over 24 hours because the front door to the building will not latch, and nothing has been done. The company advertises Brownstone as a secured building, but this is likewise a hollow guarantee. The emergency maintenance line informed me that they will not be following up on the unsecured door or the alarm because they do not consider the issue an emergency.
My wife and I have been living here now for about 3 months and we have to say that we really love it. The administrative staff are the most pleasant and understanding people to work with. They always go out of their way to help you and really remember you/want you to enjoy living at Brownstone. For example, I had an issue with the electric utilities with set up and they waived not only one but 2 fees because the issue was out of my (and their) control. The building is always immaculate and the landscaping is awesome. If plants are dead or dying it is instantly replaced. They even blow off all of the patios every week for you. Tuesdays they will even pick up your trash and recycling if you leave it outside your door. The garage is always clean. The exercise room is always clean and well maintained. When things break, as they do, they either fix them right away or have a friendly note saying they will have it fixed soon. My only complaints are few. I put in a work order request for a minor issue in my bathroom which I think has been forgotten about without fixing now... Also at midnight the other day all the fire alarms went off from a pipe that exploded in the garage downstairs. Everyone in the building had to evacuate, in our PJs, into the pouring rain for a little over an hour until the fire department stopped the exploding pipe. This was of course out of the control (mostly) of Brownstone, but according to another resident this had happened before. Seems a bit like a liability having hundreds of thousands of dollars of cars in a basement with periodically exploding pipes... Anyway. Great place. Reasonable prices. Nice, but not too many amenities. Wed recommend it.
I have lived downtown at the Windsor (super old yet adorable apartment building on the corner of Herny & Gorham) and on the far west side at the Brownstone on Old Sauk. Overall, Ive been pretty happy with my experience. The downtown location was not well-maintained in terms of cleanliness. I didnt feel that maintenance was properly trained, either. I had several problems that they attended to frequently but that never were resolved, e.g. a sink that leaked into the cabinet below. Im happy with the cleanliness and overall experience of the Brownstone. The apartment that I live in is gorgeous: hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, a double sided fireplace from the living room to the bedroom, in-unit washer dyer, everything included except gas & electric (even internet/underground heated parking). I love that. I feel like the office staff/maintenance on the West Side are typically pretty slow to get back to me about simple questions, requests, and maintenance issues. It took maintenance two or three times to make my shower water hot enough during a very cold winter. However, I think they are kind and try to do their best. They go out of their way to be helpful in other regards. For example, they helped me jump my car once, have done random favors like turn on my slow cooker for me, and offered to walk my dog for me when she was still getting accustomed to me being gone all day when I started working. The office staff/maintenance downtown were very quick to get back to me. I never felt taken advantage of in terms of a security deposit. At least not completely. Downtown, they took some out for cleaning. Whatever, I doubt they cleaned it, and I left it in pretty clean condition. I wasnt going to complain, however, because I painted the walls seafoam green, which clearly went against the rules of the lease, and half-assedly installed a shelf by drilling albeit nice brackets into the walls, and they took nothing out of my lease for that stuff. Overall, I think they are a fair company with nice staff and good properties for what youre paying. I think they could improve the quality of maintenance and the west side could improve its responsiveness to tenant inquiries.
Good finishes and character in all apartments. Gym is small and the soundproofing between apartments is terrible.
