Disclaimer: Yeah, Joes my dad.I recently bought a house and, thanks to my agent, it was easier than I could have imagined. I think I only looked at five places because we were able to narrow my search down early on which saved countless hours of wasted time. I was also spared the stress of wondering whether or not I should haggle on the asking price. The best part was that I didnt have to worry that my agent was just trying to get it over with and get to the commission - you know since hes my dad and all - but as far as Ive heard, all of Joes clients get the same peace of mind even if they didnt grow up in a house with the guy. So uh... my advice is dont try to buy a house without an agent and Joe is obviously the best choice.

After growing up in Memphis, I had lived away for over 20 years. I moved back in 2015. Having lived in apartments most of my adult life, I was ready for more space and my first house!While I was looking for full-time work, I started looking at houses, even though I knew I couldnt buy anything until I had a job. This didnt seem to bother Joe. He took me seriously and was very prompt in responding to my first inquiry. He showed me a house, and then I had to stop looking for a while, as the job search was slow. He did, however, recommend a mortgage broker that I could start to explore whether or not buying a house was possible (and she was very helpful! Ask him to recommend her!)When it looked like a job might come through, I started looking some more. Again, even though Joe knew I didnt have secure finances yet, he was more than happy to help. I would ask to see a house, and he would arrange to show it same day or next day, depending on his schedule and the availability of the house. He was very responsive and accommodating.Having been away from Memphis for a long time, it was also helpful to have Joes knowledge of Memphis neighborhoods and I asked lots and lots of questions about that, and about the condition of homes (I was generally looking at older homes). Joe has a ton of knowledge about Memphis and knows house issues inside and out.I started to focus on several houses and eventually, once the job situation was squared away, put in an offer on one I really liked. Joe led me through this process, as Id never done it before. He happily answered all of my questions and never seemed bothered. He also helped arrange outside vendors that Id need in the home buying process (home inspectors, etc.), which was great since I dont know many professionals in Memphis that deal with home buying.Although the first house didnt work out because of pricing, I quickly found another house that had just come on the market. Joe set up an appointment same day, I saw the house, loved it, and we wrote an offer the next day. Its a good thing, because another offer had come in. Although it was a little tense, Joe was very helpful in the negotiations and I got the house!Joe was extremely helpful in the inspection, repairs, closing process... something I had never been through, so didnt know what to expect. And although I had heard previous homeowners bemoan the house buying process, mine went very smoothly... both from Joes handling of sellers realtor and inspections, and my mortgage brokers handling of all the paperwork. And because Joe has worked with many of Memphis mortgage brokers, service people, and closing attorneys, the process was very smooth.Again, as a first-time home buyer, I had a lot of questions and not much information. Joe Spake was our realtor when we purchased our first home in December 2014. We specifically wanted a house in Midtown, and unfortunately started looking right when there were very few homes for sale in that area within our budget. On top of that, we were first-time home buyers and had a a million questions and anxieties, but Joe was always patient and made sure we understood every detail of the process! We looked at houses all over, including some in East Memphis, and Joe was always honest about the pros and cons of each house.
