Our latest visit was for the annual flag retirement ceremony held on Veterans Day. Its always done respectfully, each flag being saluted before being retired to the flames. Several historical and genealogy societies take part. This year, many members of the community came with flags and participated, as well. It was a very patriotic event!
Great time learning about Macon history at Ft. Hawkins. Kids had fun too.
Visited the Fort, Thursday March 18th at 10:30. Gate was closed. No employees present...Website States that it opens at 9:00...Wasted trip......
Very cool place! The people who work there are very friendly and know their stuff. I always enjoy going there are. Hello up the amazing work!
What a great replica of history. We visited here after the Ocmulgee Mounds and I am so glad that we did. Our tour guide was full of information and patient in answering my 7 year olds questions.
The visitors center is very informative and the docent is knowledgeable and genuinely interested in the site. The site itself however is still being restored. The Block House is fully restored and is interesting to explore. No entry fee, but donations appreciated to aid the restoration.
I love older history and that Fort Hawkins is very old and the Indian Mounds right there near it to.
Well maintained piece of history. Great place to visit. Close to Ocmulgee Indian Mounds.
An unsung historical resource! The fledgling visitors center has helpful information and exhibits, and one of the volunteers will give you a tour of the three-story replica blockhouse, itself a piece of history since it was built from concrete to mimic the original wood in 1937-1938 as one of FDRs Works Progress Administration projects. Just the lookout from one of the tallest hills in the area is worth the trip. Highly recommended.
I like working with them they good people
Didn’t know what to expect when we got here, but thanks to our lovely tour guide we learned the rich history of Macon and Fort Hawkins place in it.One day they’ll get the grant they need to reach the full Potential of what that place deserves.By the way there’s a pool!
Great museum with so much history. Artifacts are fabulous!
So rich in this areas history, such an integral part of the development of the US in this area.
Went to the Ocmulgee Mounds nearby and decided we would drop by here too. We didnt do our research and didnt know it wasnt open. But, by the looks of it, it looks very informative and well maintained.
Macon is Rich with history, and Fort Hawkins is the birthplace of Macon. The little museum is full of artifacts discovered at the site and a mural of an 1812 battle makes a great photo background. The 3-story blockhouse is an exact replica and houses more artifacts and history with amazing views from the open windows. There are events throughout the year (check their Facebook page), including 4th of July and Easter. This Historic site is free to the public, but donations are greatly appreciated.
That was the second time going to Applebees on Eisenhower ply in Macon ga. The serve seating the party of 5 people took over 7 mins there was no one ahead of us and the service to come and take our orders was very slow. Im sure it will be a VERY VERY LONG TIME BEFORE I EVEN THINK ABOUT GOING BACK. CHEDDARS SERVICE IS FASTER AND FOOD TASTE GREAT REALLY GREAT
Love living so close to such a historic location!!
Built in 1806 in anticipation of the War of 1812, Fort Hawkins is where Macon, GA, got started. Replica block house was built with the help of a local DAR chapter. Lots of history here as well as an archaeological dig. Just down the road you can also visit the Ocmulgee Indian Mounds.
Only because we got there & only open on the weekend. Sat & sun.
