I didnt even get out of the planning phase with Gary Schecher, thats how unprofessional his approach was. He was all smiles when we first met. my thoughts are that he saw a young couple looking to spend $550k on their first home and he thought he could scalp us on the price and we wouldnt notice what he was doing. For the build we were using existing blueprints for another house and based on our budget we were told that we would essentially get everything included in those blueprints. When Gary gave us the contract and list of features for OUR house, the cost was $25k more and didnt include nearly as many features as the original blueprint. Granite counter instead of quartz, cheap vinyl windows instead of Andersen 400 wooden ones. Half the amount of light fixtures as was on the BP, the list goes on. I attempted to reconcile the budget with Gary and figure out why he was cutting features but increasing the price. I asked what he estimated the total cost of construction would be for the house versus what we would be paying for his plot of land and he got extremely defensive and wouldnt give me a breakdown of the cost. He basically just told me that I would get what he gives me. I told him that we felt uncomfortable signing a purchase contract that was above our budget when the features that were promised were not listed and his attitude completely flipped from our initial meeting. I would be very cautious about working with this company. Based on my interactions I have a feeling they cut corners but still charge a premium. I have to wait a little longer for a house but as long as Im not giving Gary Schecher half a million dollars Ill sleep easy.

I would stay away from this one. Not only did I (and my neighbor) encounter several problems with Cross Builders during my Hurricane Sandy rebuild, I recently (12/17/18) became aware of several problems created by a subcontractor Cross hired to install a new furnace in the attic. Apparently permits for the installation were not acquired nor would the have passed inspection and could have caused a fire. BUYER BEWARE. During the rebuild process, Cross had trouble keeping subcontractors, properly appraising such subcontractors of the scope of work, keeping subcontractors on the job to get the work done on time substantially missed the mark on a couple of price quotes.

We had a very pleasant experience with Cross. Although the process of home renovation can be stressful, we feel that Cross was always working in our best interests. They got the job done, on time and within our budget.

After Sandy came through we did not know where to start to rebuild. Cross Builders helped us work with the RREM program, the zoning department, the building department and explained the whole confusing process the whole time. Our family has a new respect for contractors after the process. We would recommend them.
