I’ve been going here since I got a cavity in junior high. My grandparents recommended it to me and I’ve never regretted it! The staff are all wonderful and helpful people, very kind and understanding. And they do great work as well! They do everything in their power to mitigate and discomfort you may experience. Can’t recommend Dr. Otten and his staff more! First, his staff are 10/10 in helpfulness, attentiveness and niceness! I was referred to Dr. Otten because I had a serious ear canal infection and he was able to find the root cause - TMJ. I now have a night guard and guidance on how to improve my dental health. This will not only prevent future infections but also jaw surgery (yikes). Needless to say, his (and his staff’s) medical expertise have been INVALUABLE to my over all health. My mom needed multiple extractions and new dentures. We worked with Drs. Otten and Van Boening during Mar - July, 2021. In addition to being professional and skilled, both were extraordinarily patient, kind, and friendly. Dr. Van Boening went out of his way to help us with our tight timeline and keep us updated at every step of the process. The staff are very kind, friendly, and patient as well. I went to Dr. Otten for my TMJ for the past year and he and his whole team of staff were fantastic. They were very knowledgeable about my jaw problem, specifically, and dentistry, generally. They treated my TMJ with a personalized bite splint that has drastically changed my jaw pain and my quality of sleep. Each appointment they were very personable with greetings, questions, and provided a welcoming environment. I would highly recommend Dr. Otten for his expertise and his quality of care!

I never leave reviews. This is an unusual case. After bouncing between my dentist of 40 plus years and my ENT for over a year with no solutions. There was no clear answer why my neck hurt, could barely turn it somedays, my jaw felt like all my teeth need root canals and ears hurt as well. Of course all tests and scans were good. Go figure right! Then I tired going to three other dentists. I gave up! I started my own research and learned about TMJ and the issues that come along with it. Improper dental practice left me in a bad spot- Not everyone with a hammer is carpenter, just because they have the tools. Same goes for dentistry. After a few months and thousands of dollars later I ended up contacting Otten Dentistry.I picked up right away that he knew what he was talking about and felt confident that he could help me. Almost a year later after that first consolation, I am doing much better and I am on a good path. Thanks to Dr Otten and all of those that work with him. They are professional, kind and know what they are doing!

Where do I start...I was not a patient of Dr. Ottens. I was suffering from a very infected dry socket after oral surgery. I ended up in Dr. Ottens care, and do I mean CARE!!! Within one week, I have seen him three times! My infection is almost gone! He and his staff are my HEROES!!! They took a horrible situation and fixed it! Now, I am a patient! Thank you, Dr. Otten!! Do not use this dentist. Did not fallow safety procedures almost dropped a needle down my throat and did a extremely poor job I have had to go to another dentist to fix what he did in the process of contacting the better business bureau. Update this doctor called me to ask me to remove my post would give me money back if I signed a non disclosure. I forgot to add instead of him working on a Friday and fixing my tooth that he made in alot of pain he just prescribed more pain killers. I feel this doctor should not have his license.

Ive been going to Dr. Otten for over 6 years and he has been integral in renewing my faith in dentistry. I would highly recommend his practice to anyone looking for a new dentist. He and his staff do an excellent job.

Dr. Otten is the finest dentist I have ever seen. He has the hands of a concert violinist, he has an insightful, progressive view of dental health, he has an excellent bedside manner, and his staff is top notch. He is not the cheapest dentist in town; but how often does excellence come cheaply ? Good things are not cheap and cheap things are not good. You have one set of teeth. Dont scrimp on them.

I have had a number of painful dentist visits in the past, so I have a lot of fear when it comes to dental appointments. Dr. Otten is renown for his knowledge of corrective appliances to help with sleep apnea. This has enabled me to not have to use a CPAP machine, which is a huge benefit. He has my top recommendation.

Both my oldest son and I are patients of Dr. Otten and Dr. Ristow, and weve had great experiences here.I came to Dr. Otten a few years ago with severe anxiety around dental procedures. Even simple hygiene visits were panic-inducing due to some previous traumatic experiences at other practices. My first visit at Dr. Ottens office made me feel SO much better. Debbie, my hygienist, took some time to discuss my fears and find out where my anxieties stemmed from, and she and Dr. Otten have always been great about helping find ways to mitigate those fears, to take the time to thoroughly explain procedures, and to listen and validate when I was experiencing discomfort. When Dr. Ristow joined the team, I began seeing him for some of my appointments as well, including some recent fillings, and I have had the same experiences with him, too--hes always very patient, answers all my questions thoroughly, takes care to ensure Im comfortable during procedures, and stops to fix the problem when Im not.My oldest son is on the Autism spectrum and is very sensitive to certain sensory input, so when we brought him in for his first visit, he spent some time with Debbie looking at the various instruments so he could hear them operating and see what they looked and felt like. His next visit went really well, and he seemed perfectly comfortable with the staff and the procedures for his hygiene appointment. And, just like with me, the team was very thorough in explaining to him what they would be doing and how it would help them make sure he had a healthy mouth.Both of my kiddos have accompanied me to visits and the staff is always very family-friendly and understanding about me needing to bring them, and theyve been really accommodating toward them.Our youngest is about to start needing dental care as well, and we definitely plan for him to be a patient at Dr. Ottens practice as well.We really cant say enough good things about Dr. Otten and Dr. Ristow and the rest of the team. They have turned something that used to cause me a lot of anxiety into something I dont necessarily look forward to (no offense--its not you, its me!) but that I also dont completely dread and lose sleep over for days on end. Its been a complete 180 for me in how I view my dental care and I know my mouth is healthier for it!

The service and quality of my appointment was on point! The staff is great and beyond helpful with their knowledge in TMJ. I went to Dr.Ottens office yesterday for the first time and I couldnt stop yawning because I was so darn comfortable there! The office is warm and inviting, the clearly care a lot about the patients comfort. His staff is so friendly! I went back for a cleaning today and, again, got in right away. They answered all of my questions and clearly are working with state of the art dental equipment. I was told that Dr.Otten is often travelling for teaching which I really like because that shows me that he is passionate about his work, and he was a pretty cool guy when I met him. I wish I hadnt avoided finding a dentist for so long and had found Dr.Otten when I first moved to town!

When I first moved to Lawrence two years ago, I googled dentists in the Lawrence area and Dr. Ottens website popped up. Their website looked so nice and I had this feeling that I would feel comfortable in their office. After my first appointment there, I was hooked. I got a tour and the staff helped me feel very welcome. I would recommend Dr. Otten (and his staff) to anyone. In fact, I try to do so as often as possible, especially after my most recent interaction with them. My partner had a severe toothache and needed help/relief as soon as possible. I called and asked what our options were and he ended up being able to meet with Dr. Otten that very day. He was also a patient that they had never seen before. Such great customer service and care. Our experience with Dr. Ottens office was exceptional! I discovered them by Googling in desperation for expert cosmetic dentistry for my teenage daughter, following a different dental office’s triple attempt, but very unacceptable veneer work. From my first phone call to Dr. Otten’s office to the final product, we were completely at ease and impressed with all of the staff’s kindness, professionalism, and perfectionist approach. After almost a 3-year investment in braces, my daughter needed several small teeth to be enhanced. Dr. Otten communicated with the orthodontist multiple times, together coordinating the fine-tuned adjustments for the exact spacing needed for the cosmetic dentistry. After the braces were removed, Dr. Otten’s office got her quickly into their schedule. Then in his meticulous and perfectionist approach, Dr. Otten did the cosmetic work...at my first sight of the amazing transformation, tears of joy and relief were my immediate reaction! This review is only for Dr. Otten and TMD (AKA TMJ) treatment. Back in 2014, there werent many options for doctors nearby that knew anything about TMD and he had such good reviews I thought he clearly knows his stuff. Well I now know he isnt the doctor to see if you are mid-face deficient and have TMD. I went through 6 months of splint therapy during which I didnt really notice a great difference in my symptoms. To fit the splint he filed some of my teeth down (I didnt feel good about it at the time and based on what I know now, I should have ran out of the office and found someone else). Dont let any dentist file your teeth down...ever! It isnt necessary. I had limited mouth opening and my teeth didnt form an semblance of a bite. I thought at the end of therapy, since he seemed happy with the results that it was as good as it was going to get for me. At the time there wasnt a whole lot of positive information online. So I thought at least if we continued on with phase 2 Invisalign maybe I can get a good bite again even with limited opening. Well at the end of Invisalign, while my models looked fantastic, my bite wasnt and I finally had to fire him as my doctor because I could tell he didnt know how to help me. When he recommended me check out a surgeon friend of his, I knew he was mad. Surgery is a last result. So after several years and $10,000 down the drain, it was only when I spread my net further I discovered the world of LVI dentists and found out the cutting edge treatment they were practicing and getting real, measurable results. They grow the jaws out so you dont need extractions or IPR when doing orthodontics. Retraction and extraction orthodontics are just wrong and need to stop immediately. LVI has a facebook group in which people can ask questions, access helpful documents, and get valuable morale support while going through the treatment process. I found out Invisalign isnt recommended for TMD patients but Controlled Arch Braces. From my experience, I would agree. I have learned a lot over that past years. Take it from my experience, if you have TMD and are mid-face deficient, seek out a LVI dentist. You can go to their website to find one nearest to you. Most patients do have to travel hours a way, one-way, but it is worth it. I hope one day, more dentists learn these techniques and they wont be spaced so far apart.

Im never going back to this dentist office. They have been placing nonstop phone calls to me saying I owe them money because my insurance overpaid. Over two years ago, I was referred to them for TMJ. I had just left a verbally abusive marriage with no money, so my parents had paid $4000 for a bite splint. While we were there, they told us we would receive most of the money back from insurance. They sent us later an $1800 check. We didnt even get half of that money back. Now two years after the fact, they are asking for $1500 back when they didnt even fix the problem. Every time I have been there, they get to me 30 minutes to an hour late after my scheduled time. Vicki told me that I should just be grateful that they fixed my pain. Two years later it is not okay to harass someone telling them you owe them money when they lied to your face saying insurance would cover most of it. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Dr. Otten and his staff are friendly and knowledgeable. Prior to visiting Dr. Otten I was experiencing quite a bit of jaw pain and accompanying headaches from TMJ issues. Dr. Otten developed a treatment plan, and made me a bite splint that has completely eliminated these issues. Regular checkups and cleanings are always very thorough and I leave with any questions I may have answered. I would highly recommend Dr. Otten to anyone in the Lawrence area looking for a Dentist.

Was left in lots of pain. Because of this I was prescribed lots of pain killers and do to this after I had to see another dentist I started to go threw with draws and lost work because of this dentist he did not fallow safety protocols and almost dropped a tool down my throat and I am in the process of contacting the better business bureau.

My experience with Dr. Otten and his team have always been great! I have used them for many years. He is a progressive dentist using the latest techniques and it has never hurt me (at least not much :) ). My husband was scared to death of dentists but Dr. Otten and his staff won him over. The team at Dr. Ottens office is wonderful. On my first visit, the office staff gave me a full tour of the facility and made me feel not only welcomed, but more relaxed. Their office has almost a spa-like quality to it, with calming music and art. Dr. Otten took the time to get to know me at our appointment, and really explained what was going on with my teeth. He didnt chastise me for not flossing like I should, as every other dentist seems to do, but explained its value in a no-pressure kind of way. What an absolute joy it was to go to Dr. Ottens office. I moved back to Lawrence a few months ago and was looking for a dentist for my regular scheduled cleaning. This office was recommended to me and I saw that they were the highest rated dental office in town, so it was a no-brainer where I was going to go. The staff was beyond wonderful. I received a tour of the office when I first arrived and met Dr. Otten as well as all of the employees in the office. The atmosphere (zen) in the office was fantastic as well. the hygienist Debbie was absolutely great and was more knowledgeable than any other hygienist that Ive ever seen for dental work. Everything went so smoothly while I was there. Imaging was done before the cleaning and Debbie was able to show me everything immediately right from her laptop.I was very pleased with Dr. Otten and his entire team. I highly recommend his office if you are in need of any dental work/advice. I personally have never been afraid of going to the dentist but if I was one of the many people who dread dental office visits, I would imagine that my fears would go away as soon as I left his office. I had been to James Ottens for very complicated dental surgery. The crown of my teeth was completely broken and I was really worried. But right from the start to the end all the staff (Joanna, Brenda, Tifanny) who attended to me was extremely helpful and caring. My surgery was done by Dr. Luke Ristow and it was 1hr long process. I was amazed to see how gifted and blessed he is with his hands. I have done similar surgeries (with a different dentist of course) previously and I ended up in hospital because of an infection. Dr. Luke was very considerate, helpful even more available whenever I had queries related to this. He also guided me very well with my further treatment options. I had a wonderful experience with all of them and I would recommend this place to anyone who is considering dental work.

Dr. Otten’s office is not just a dentist practice, but a second family. Every time you walk in the door, you see smiling faces grace you and welcome you into their office. Every staff member personally learns your name and build that one on one relationship with you. They explain every little detail to you and go step by step so you truly understand whats ahead. I faced major issues with my jaw over the years and eventually went through jaw lock. My personal dentist tried multiple things to unlock my jaw (cotton test, mouth piece, muscle relaxers), but none of this worked after 2 months of trying. I did some research online trying to find a specialist and came across Dr. Otten’s practice. After hours and hours of research I knew Dr. Otten was the only person I trusted to help fix my mouth. From that first moment I walked into that door, I knew I was in the right place. I came in there the first day in extreme pain and after months of split therapy my jaw has unlocked and I’m in no more pain. The price of the therapy is shocking at first but is worth every penny (but also why we have insurance). He truly is one of the best TMJ professionals in the country! He is the only dentist I trust anymore, which is why he is my primary dentist for all my dental needs.

I wore a bite splint or an appliance on my bottom teeth since 2008. The splint was made for me in Iowa. I wore out the splint, and broke off a corner of it. So my dentist in Iowa found Dr Otten in Lawrence, Ks. Since I had moved to Kansas, I needed a dentist that is closer to where I live. I saw Dr. Otten, he did extensive testing, then made me a new bite splint. Dr. Otten understands the pain of TMD and is willing to help people who have it. I am blessed to have found him. Dr. Otten is amazing! I have been a patient of his since the early 1990’s. I moved out of state for a time, and when I moved back to the area, I knew exactly who I wanted to be my dentist. Dr. Otten is a warm, compassionate, gentle man who keeps up with the latest advances in care. He also teaches other dentist around the country through seminars. I have seen how he has adapted through the years with his treatment practices in order to provide the best care available. I’ve never felt hurried through the process or like I’m bugging them with my questions or health history.In my case, I also have TMJ. Early this morning i broke my front tooth. it had been fixed previously after an basketball related incident. I called trying to find a dental office that would take a patient on a short notice and the place i had previously gone to couldnt even work something in without an appointment scheduled months in advance. However, when i called Dr. Ottens office, not only were they incredibly friendly, but despite the busy schedule, they were able to schedule me to walk in within an hour of my call. The people were very friendly, and service was outstanding. Although he said that my tooth was only temporarily fixed, it feels, and looks a lot better than the initial fix and i dont even see the crack lines! I am definitely taking all my dental-related business here from now on!

Im a college student and was experiencing problems with my jaw. I looked online for a random dentist in town and saw how the organization handled a comment by a frustrated reviewer and knew that I could trust them. They saw me within two hours of my call and everyone I encountered just seemed like good people on top of being good at what they do. I have nothing bad that I could possibly say about the experience. I ended up seeing Dr. Luke Ristow, a new dentist to the team, and I was truly impressed by him. I would consider myself a demanding patient in that I need to know what is occurring and why. He listened to all my concerns and explained how and why my symptoms all lead to an infection due to an incoming wisdom tooth. On top of that, he noticed another potential issue and led me to the next steps of its correction. I find that one of the most important things about healthcare workers is their ability to communicate with their patients; Dr. Ristow and the team that I met -- Debbie, Tiffany, Debra, and Vickie -- all did so exceptionally well.

I was hit by a car walking across the street early last year. I was lucky because there was no life threatening damage. All the damage was isolated to my mouth and jaw. I lost one of my front teeth and had additional damage to my upper palate. The EMTs asked if I wanted to go to the hospital, I was conscious with no concussion after the accident, and I asked what they would do. They said they would probably just send me to a dentist. I didnt have a regular dentist that I was seeing, so I just asked if they could take me to the closest one they knew. A policewoman was nice enough to drive me to a Dr. Ottens office. She seemed familiar with the office and it was fairly close (I was hit on 11th and Tennessee.) Im glad she did. Ive had excellent care from everyone who works there. It was a little chaotic when I first arrived as I was bleeding a lot and escorted by an officer, but they were very professional and took care of me immediately. They have been very flexible and understanding with my unique situation, from the insurance down to the scheduling. Im almost at the final step of implants after all the necessary time to heal, and I have felt confident in my level of care with no confusion or misunderstandings throughout the process. I would recommend them to anyone for any kind of dental care.
