Took a trip with my husband to Kansas City and we decided to eat here. THIS IS BY FAR THE BEST BARBECUE I HAVE EVER HAD. We got the 3 meat platter and substituted the ham for turkey. The plate was big enough to feed us both easily, but we also ordered onion rings to try them. Everything was DELICIOUS and came out to about $40. Would recommend the ribs or the turkey if you go, both are the best I have ever had.

You know its good, when theres a line out the door. You order at the register and they serve it to you right then and there. Be ready with your order though! There is a long line and a system, best to be ready when its your turn. The food is delicious. Everyone local said go to the original spot, and it didnt disappoint.

My two grandsons and I had a rack of ribs and a meat sandwich on a bun. Lots of fries and a yammer pie for dessert. Home in St. Louis now, eating a yammer pie for breakfast. So good...I also got 5 stars and a $10 bonus on my receipt. The staff is efficient and friendly. We had a good time and great food. Highly recommend Gates BBQ

Im not being biased (coming from Texas) but I honestly only liked the bbq here. Maybe it was just the time I went, but the brisket had a bit much fat on it, ribs were a little hard to eat, and overall the meat was a little dry. Im not a fan of the I guess (spicier) bbq sauce in Kansas City as opposed to the south, but it was still good! Overall their mixed plate cost the same as any other place (about 25$) and youre definitely getting your moneys worth. Id give this place another shot considering its KCs hot spot.

The service was fast and the sides were great. However, the rib was cooked too long the meat was hard and some prices a little burnt, and lack BBQ sauce.

Out of all the bbq I have tried in Kansas City Gates has been my least favorite. I dont remember if this location was the one I went to the last time but I decided to give it another chance. I got a mixed plate which came with ribs, beef, ham and fries with an extra side of chilli cheese fries. I got this order to go and didnt get any silverware or bbq sauce with my meal. Guessing you have to ask for it. Overall much better than the last time I had gates bbq and would dine here again.

I had no idea about the nooner special but I would gladly play $20 for a beef on bun. The crew here is always amazing and helpful they make you really feel at home with the big hi may I help you? All the locations are wonderful but this has to be one of my favorite same familiar faces for over 20 years and same Smokey flavor that weve all come to know and love. Dont forget to add on that Yammer pie

Burnt end sandwich tasted like it had bones in jt. I was literally chomping on what I thought were twigs…. I spit one out and it was a piece of pork that was hard as a rock. Started digging through the chopped meat and sure enough…. Strands of pork that were LITERALLY like plastic.So good they’re feeding the general public meat that is god knows how old. Completely unacceptable. There’s no way This was food made today. It isn’t even in the realm of possibilities. Pretty disappointed and I definitely will NOT be back.

Not my favorite BBQ place in KC but still has some good food. Best thing about Gates is how quick they get you in and out. Simple menu and staff has always been nice. Also great portions of food no matter what you order. Definitely recommend you give it a shot.

Food was delicious and prepared very quick! It definitely differentiates itself from any other type of bbq. The establishment was old but workers were constantly cleaning and wiping down tables.We will definitely eat here again!

Great service friendly staff. Restaurant was clean and had a friendly atmosphere. The Beef was awesome and the ham had a really good flavor. Nice portions well worth what you pay for.

The lady that helped us seemed to want to help everyone else but my daughter and myself... I dont care what your skin color is, green is all you should see when customers walk through the door... Chili cheese fries are a no go for me, I dont believe they are worth $7.95. My taste buds did not like it. We ordered 2 and gave one away after we left. Your ribs were more on the fatty side than I like but they did taste good. I always go to the one off of main, I will continue to go to that location.

This is the Good Lords cooking. The food was great and the staff was well beyond nice and courteous. The kind woman who helped us out at our table was the picture of service and so great 10/10.

Walked in and could immediately smell the pit. Good sign. Beef on bun was excellent sauce was good, meat was excellent. Great service too. Will come again when I visit the city

Gates BBQ located on Brooklyn Ave. in Kansas City, MO is the very best BBQ in the area. Ive been eating at Gates for decades and it only gets better with time. The short ends, long ends, beef sandwich and burnt ends are indescribably delicious. The fries, onion rings and other condiments accentuate the eating experience each time. I cant wait to return.

Service was great and food has been on previous visits but today burnt ends was just burnt fat, no real meat at all

The food and atmosphere is astounding.I would recommend anyone give it a try. Portion amount is amazing and you will be content and happy with whatever you purchase.

After driving 12 hours from Houston was so excited after over 20 years of being away from Kansas City and my favorite barbecue place. Mr Williams and Ms Smith took very good care of us. I must say they went above and beyond to make sure I left with a smile on my face.

Had heard about Gates years ago. Finally had the chance to stop in. Tremendous amounts of food. Lines move fairly quickly. Ribs were a bit over seasoned but we managed. Onion rings were overcooked. Ill give them another try.

Went hear to see what Kansas City Bbq was all about. Overall I felt that it was mediocre bbq. The ribs and brisket were dry. Best thing we got was the thick cut fries. They were soft and chewy but still top item we received. Unimpressed and disappointed.

Visited from Wichita ks.. love Gates Bbq..a little steep on the prices . but the food is definitely delicious 🤤..staff was a little rushed and I didnt really know the menu so I just asked the Lady to pick me something

Friendly staff, good seating area and parking. Overall it just wasnt my taste in BBQ. I got the mixed plate and was pretty pricey around $34.

Honestly, I only chose Gates because everything else was closed and I really wanted some bbq. Let me tell you, Gates has brought back them thick delicious ribs! I had canceled them years ago when I felt they were serving anorexic meat. Not on this occasion! Fries couldve been cooked longer, otherwise it wouldve been a five star review.

If youre new to Gates, ordering can be intimidating, but the food is top notch.

I like this Gates BBQ on 12th Woodland in Kansas City. Ribs were meaty and food was very fresh even at 10:00 pm. It was crowded, but I didnt catch the night managers name, but she got that line in and out. I think this is their best location.

Absolutely wonderful experience. Went with some friends to try. The woman at the counter was a delight and recommended the small party, pictured, which was two choices of meat and ribs. She suggested the turkey and it was honestly the best turkey Ive ever had. We also got beans, which were also amazing. Wonderful service and excited to go back! If you are in KCMO and want barbecue, you have to go to Gates!

Sidney and the rest of the Gates family made our experience phenomenal. Anytime I am in KC I will always have to stop in. Thank to the chefs for the wonderful flavors, to the cashiers for making everything so easy and to the servers for being so attentive and helpful. What an amazing place and wonderful people.

I rarely go to Gates. The food is often not exceptional and the staff is often not as kind as youd anticipate, but occasionally you get good food and good service. Its a timing thing.

We had ribs, beef, & turkey (only because they didnt have pork? What with that?) The beef was SO good, and the spicy sauce is the bomb! The ribs were good, but the turkey was meh. Missed the burnt ends which is a fail on my part. All in all go to Gates bar-b-q. Its great.

Nobody can beat the Gates President tray in Kansas City. For that fact no other BBQ place has a party tray comparable. Its loaded with every type of meat you can think of when thinking about BBQ. When I have an event with family or friends the Presidents tray is my go to because it has something for everyone.

There was a long line wanting food. I believe they were also doing training at the same time as their dinner rush. At first glance, I thought the prices were kinda high. When we received our food, an saw their serving size, I thought the prices were very decent. And wow was the food good!

Food was great and the service was very welcoming!We are in Kansas City every few years for a baseball tourney and Gates is a must stop for the family. They never disappoint!

I gave it a 4 due to some days the meat is good and some not so good. But, for the most part delicious food and great sauce. The sauce alone you can make a new meal with meat at home. Also the beans can not be replaced 😊

Their bbq is excellent, but service at this location is bumpy at best, these days. I could tolerate spotty service and delays on my order because the food is so good, however, when I called to place a to-go order last week I was told, All carry out orders have to be made in person now. I dont understand the logic, but I have to respect the reality of it. Oh, well.We used to go to the Brooklyn location at least once a month for the past 13 years. Unfortunately, its likely we wont be going back

Nasty! I asked the cashier if their brisket was lean, she said yes. So I got the ham and brisket combo. The brisket was super fatty!!! I didnt eat any after spitting out the first bite. The ham was fine. The sauce was ok at best. While sitting there(not happy with my sandwich) I started reading reviews. I read a review that said the sauce tasted only like chili powder...holy cow it is true!!! That was all I could taste, nothing special about it! The brisket was discussing, sauce not special, and fries were OK at best. $17 down the drain:(. The veins in the meat really turned me off too! The floors feel like you are skating on a grease rink!!!

Still taste as good as always! 12th St location sets the KC BBQ standard as one of the originals. Superb!

Delicious food and a great lunch special. Pay attention when youre in line, they will yell at you for your order before you are actually at the register to keep the line moving.

I place a pick up order. Was told it would be an hour and a half. That wasn’t a big deal to me. I didn’t mind waiting.I get to the restaurant to pick up my order and the sign that leads customers to where they are supposed to pick up orders leads to the bathrooms. I ask an employee and the told me I have to wait in line with people who are placing their orders. What is the point of calling in an order almost two hours in advance if I still have to wait in a huge line for my food?As I’m waiting in line, I notice almost all of the employees aren’t wearing masks properly or at all. And the customers waiting in line aren’t wearing masks either. We are still in a mask ordinance and it is required per their own signage. Several employees were maskless near the food production areas.The line doesn’t move at all, and the cashiers are walking around not helping people. They took maybe two orders from the line in the 20 minutes I waited.I finally walked out when I overheard an upset customer who mentioned that the employee was not wearing gloves, and she wiped the sweat from her face and then touched all of his food.I didn’t even get to try the BBQ, but this experience has made sure that I would never return. I know Gates is a KC institution, but I was shocked by the lack of COVID protocols, the lack of customer service, and the lack of sanitary food handling.

Stopped here on our way to Louisville. First time having BBQ in KC! Great job Gates B-B-Q! We enjoyed all the food we had.

We shared a beef sandwich and added 2 ribs. 8.95 for 2 ribs was ridiculous but I had heard so much about gates and abs being the places to go for good kc q that I paid it anyway. The beef on the sandwich was cold and flavorless. They chop the burnt ends so much that it tastes like canned beef jerky. Ribs were cold and dry. Horrible example of bbq.

This is honestly my favorite location of one of my favorite barbecue joints in town. You cannot go wrong with any of their meat and their original sauce is something I keep in my cabinet at home. Plus, the staff here is top notch.

I love kansas city. I love Gates. The staff in the restaurant on this visit were on the rude side to everyone and the place was really dirty. Made me sad because this place is a tradition. Im going to guess all of the hard times that came with covid has changed some things for them which the same has happened to many places. Food was still good. Prices were also fair. So Im rooting for them to rise up and return to what they were.

Low grade dog meal, with pickle juice as the main flavor!! Theres not enough bbq sauce to make that tender, OR tasty!!! Over smoked, over done........ Gives KC bbq a black eye for sure!!!!

This place here! Understaffed!! It should be at least 4 cash registers, with someone at every one of them. My sister was hell bent on us going here for their bar b q. Wish I had a chance to sample, smelt good. We left abruptly because it was to much chaos going on with the front and back.

Gates definetly gives you that home cooking bbq feel. They really make you feel at home. The bbq is very good and would highly recommend going there. The prices were reasonable and the service is great.

I had the short ribs for the first ti.e in Kansas city. It was so good, to have ribs cooked so tenderly tasting. The facility was clean and there was some one ask to help me with refills and anything I would request. Great customer service!!

Same old Gates. That means, delicious!One of my favorite places for KC BBQ. Features smoked brisket, ham, turkey, and pork. Great bbq beans, and some really great french fries.There is no such thing as THE best BBQ in KC. -BBQ is subjective to every person. But Gates is a must stop when touring all of the great BBQ available in KC. (Top 5 of KC BBQ in my book)
