This place is the cleanest and nicest shelter I’ve ever been to! A huge selection of all ages of dogs. All staff was friendly and inviting. I liked the process of how they let you go back by yourself and look at all of them. Only thing was we had to wait awhile for someone to meet and greet the dogs to us but I get it, it’s a busy place. Unfortunately we didn’t end up getting our pup from there but I highly recommend it!
Recently my wife and i allowed Gizmo ( now Sunny) to adopt us. What a joy he has been. The total experience has been marvelous. If there is ever another dog in our lives, it will be from Wayside. They are wonderful people who are totally committed to providing a better life for their animals. Thank you all so much.
I absolutely love adopting animals from wayside waifs. They are very knowledgeable of the animals that stay there. They also try very hard to make a good match with owners which is nice.
This is a very happy place. Helpful, knowledgable, honest employees, happy animals and happy customers. I got two kitties from here. They are the best!
Unbelievable Humane Society just outside of Kansas City with a staye of the art facility. This is a no-kill animal adoption center with a fabulous caring staff.
They were rude to my fiance! My fiance called to put adoption hold on a dog and a puppy and they said they wouldnt let him adopt because of something he said! They are in my book, little snowflakes, they made me cry, because there was a cat I really liked that I wanted to adopt!
I adopted two cats from here. (first on 10-19-18 and second one 10-29-18)I’ve bonded so much with the first kitty, who I named Bolt. I got him for my birthday, hes a striped tabby. The second one is named Moon and hes a blue siamese, he’s absolutely gorgeous. They were both neutered and fully vaccinated as well!
I adopted a cat from this business several years ago and just wanted to express what a great adoption process I experienced and what a great cat I got from them. The cat was a hard to adopt out cat but I wanted to give her a chance and, she turned out wonderful! Everything the adoption staff told my about this cat was correct and insightful so, there were no surprises down the road. I am so thankful to them and plan to provide a donation because I think that this is a quality organization.
Just awful I reached out in June, my husband has cancer and could no longer support our family of three and two pets on one income. Unfortunately my pets are no longer with us and now I get an email offering to speed up my application. This is joke and a let down to many who reach out for services.
Matt was fantastic and made our first adoption as a family truly a treat. They went out of their way to answer any questions we had and was very thorough during the entire process. They understood exactly how to be during the adoption process and gave us the space we needed to discuss our final decision. Thank you for helping us chose the perfect member to add to our family!
Will always have fond memories of this place. We adopted our furbaby here a year ago. The facility was clean and the staff clearly cared about these animals. I appreciated that we could go into a room and get to know her. We fell in love immediately and couldnt wait to take her home. They were good at explaining what to expect when we took her home.
Great place to take care of Needed HELP ANIMALS !!!
Always a great place to visit and the employees are so helpful.
Adopted my cat here. They made it an easy and friendly process.
I adopted a cat named Elmer and hes a sweetheart, the staff were very nice and friendly I would adopt from them again.
Back in December I adopted a kitten by the name of Apricot, the people were very nice and considerate however they were very dishonest. As soon as I came home with the kitten (after they had given her a clean bill of health) I reviewed her paper work which on the health side said she she had an unknown scar and crusts around her eyes and nose along with coughing and sneezing. I did notice the crusts and sneezing upon further observation after being rushed out of Wayside, I took her to several vets who had no idea what was wrong with her. Around May I found her laying in the closet unable to move the only thing she could do was meow. All the local vet clinics were closed do to quarantine so I attended a Zoom call for diagnosis but all they could say was to feed sugar to see if that helped. This continued for 3 days of me crushing up food and hand feeding her it and giving her water through a syringe. Sadly she passed away on May 6. I believe had Wayside been honest I could have gotten her the treatment she needed. It was one the most traumatic experiences I have been through. Please ask to review paperwork and ask for a second opinion before adopting here. I know im not the only one who has had a kitty from here pass away.
Me and my mom are going as soon as we get a better house my neighbors son got a pitbull and. named it snorkels he is the most funniest dog ever and loving but we are looking for a beagle, yorkie, or a shi tzu. And me and my mom will donate to that shelter once we see its a good shelter with no rude rude staff or counselor but I dont know if i will have problems I will come for sure!
Called to set up an appointment for one of the dogs, took over a day to call me back. Once they did call me back the representative was super rude on the phone and seemed like she was trying to talk me out of getting the dog all together with the description she gave of the dog and the questions she was asking. Not very professional and kind of sad when dogs need homes and they have people like that representing them hopefully they get better help there soon so some dogs can find some good homes.
Stopped in to adopt a cat today during wayside’s kitten bowl, but left completely disappointed. The facility was very nice, but the staff were not. We walked in and were barely acknowledged by the reception people. Figured out on our own to sign in and where to go to view available cats. We were finally approached after looking for a bit by a staff member. We relayed that we were looking for a kid friendly cat that loved to cuddle. The staff member rudely shut us down immediately, stating they had no cats like that at this time and all they had were shy cats. If this was truly the case, I completely understand. My only issue is with there not being some type of mention of this on what was advertised as a “kitten bowl” adoption event.
This shelter is amazing. My partner and I delivered some kittens from Iowa and we were amazed at the service and shelter in general. It smelled amazing. The staff was professional and fun to work with and coming from another “regional” shelter it was fun to see and compare the two. I would recommend this place hands down. A must see and a must visit if you are considering finding your next pet there.
I was a little unsure about Wayside Waifs at first due to some of the mixed reviews they seemed to have. But my family was interested in a sweet little chihuahua they had at their shelter. The staff was all friendly and responded back to my calls quickly (like within the hour or at least always the same day). They allowed us a trial period (slumber pawty) with the chi we were interested in to ensure we would be a good match for her due to her past situation, and included all the things we would need for her in that trial period. We ended up falling in love with her and due to us living a little over an hour away from the shelter, the staff was willing to work with my schedule in order for me to come back up there to fill out the paperwork to finalize the adoption (which we completed this past weekend). I would also like to point out that I appreciate all the COVID precautions Wayside took by doing appointment only, supplying clean writing utensils to sign in, and all staff were wearing masks. Overall we had a great experience and are so happy with our little Lupita (formerly named Cindy Lou at the shelter), she is such a sweetheart. I would def look into adopting with them in the future again!
Ive used this shelter for 28 years to adopt two dogs and a cat. Each time Ive adopted the service is less friendly. The reason Ive gone back is that each pet Ive adopted has been a healthy great companion. The reason I decided to take the time to write a review today is because I was in disbelief when I called them to make an appointment to look at kittens after looking at them on their website. The conversation with the woman who answered the phone went something like this. Me: Yes I would like to look at some of the kittens you have for adoption and understand I will need an appt. The Lady: Great! ALL I MUST COLLECT from you is $20 in order to make an appointment to look at the kittens, and oh we really want you to choose just two (there were close to 15 kittens under the age of 6 months when I called). She continued on with her elevator speech until I finally interrupted her and said you mean I have to pay a nonrefundable $20 so someone can show me TWO kittens? To which she replied, but dont worry the $20 will go towards the $150 adoption fee if you decide to adopt a kitten under 6 months. I told her she sounded like a used car saleswoman and I want interested. So I then contacted a few other shelters who had kittens, no FEE to take a look and were very friendly. I guess Wayside thinks they can get away with anything since they have are so well known and have such a nice building due to countless donations and volunteers. Shame on them for their COVID business practices. Again, I absolutely was expecting and wanting an appointment rather than to be around masses of people, but never in my wildest dreams would I guess that looking at any adoptable animal would cost me $20. As you can tell from my review, not only will I not return, but I have told this story to several people today as I was so sickened that a shelter was all about the MONEY!
Clean facility and a caring staff!
Writing this review after many years of HURT. Giving one star to Wayside Waifs is being REALLY generous because I would give them -1000!!! A few years ago (2011) we lost our dog Daisy, we couldnt find her after a few weeks and we finally decided to check wayside waifs as a last resort. We not only found Daisy but she was given a different name by then. They REFUSED to give her back to us. Daisy at this point was crying for us and we were too. They claimed we would have to give them payment up front for Daisy. I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER say adopt is better than shop because it is the SAME SCAM! The SAME. This experience really left a bad taste in my mouth. We lost our dog, twice. If Wayside Waifs was a person, they would be Carol Baskin. Someone who claims to help, but really only wants money. I feel bad for all those dogs, some who could be lost dogs and/or stolen. Please everyone do research before you decided to adopt. Make sure the place you are looking into is ETHICAL. -- END RANT.
We went there my mom and my self and we got the most amazing girl there she was beautiful and probably the greatest dog any one could image getting to be part of her was the greatest gift you could image we picked her out togther and I told her good by Alone we had her for 10 years she was five when we got her miss her everyday, but I got my new dog there and he truly is a amazing dog how incredibly lucky I am to have him
While I love what this place stands for, I did not have a good experience there. I have donated to them for years but had never adopted a pet from them. When we did go to try to adopt a kitten we had a bad experience. First off, the woman in the area where the cats were was very overbearing. She followed us around the whole time we were visiting the animals and would not stop talking. Then, she was very pushy and said we had to adopt two unless we wanted to adopt specific cats. She flat out refused to let us adopt just one kitten. I wish I would have gotten her name but we were just so shocked we wanted to get out of there. This was on July 26, 2019 in the afternoon. We went to KC Pet Project and adopted a wonderful kitten there. They were happy to let us adopt one and didn’t try to make us adopt two. We love our cat, so it worked out in the end. 😊
We adopted a big gentle giant German Shepard Claude who is now named Monty!! He is such a lover boy!! He learns so fast and is for being a big boy and I mean BIG boy he’s so gentle and loving with all his human sisters!! He enjoys sleeping with them in a real bed!! He’s so goofy and funny and full of kisses!! We are so thankful for the opportunity to make Monty a part of our family!! He’s a perfect fit!! ❤️❤️ They have a lot of beautiful fur babies to check out!! We originally went to look at one we saw online but stumbled across our giant baby and fell in love!!! Definitely recommend waifs side! They are very informative with each of the babies you choose to check out and help pair you with a perfect fit!! ❤️❤️ When we are ready to add to our family we will definitely be back!!
Nobody answers your calls horrible customer service.
Went in to adopt a cat with my family members. Front desk staff and volunteers were helpful but adoption counselors were not.I was told to pick a cat then fill out the adoption survey, which felt more like they wanted to get rid of the animals than try to find them good homes. The process wasnt explained very well.My sister had wanted a kitten, but was uncomfortable with the way the counselors were handling them. The kitten was obviously stressed, but the counselor still wanted to grab him for my sister. It also felt like the counselor was trying to get us to take the kitten rather than know if we would be able to provide a good home for it.We left cat-less and feeling sorry for all those cats. Im sure the shelter is doing great work, but I dont think Ill be supporting them in the future.
Would give them a zero if possible. Perhaps Wayside waifs is trying to get rid of animals too fast? My daughter adopted a puppy and I went with her. First puppy was not mentioned as part pitbull up front and she opted for another. Puppy was listless and threw up on the way home. Also, found ticks on her and just turned around and took her back. They said they couldnt take her back and watch her to see if she was okay because she was now adopted (for all of 2 1/2 hours). Gave her a tick treatment after they found more and handed her back. Wouldnt eat, was listless, threw up more and was returned to them less than 24 hours after adoption. Parvo. Would go with your gut and be very leary of a place that tells you up front not to put the puppy on the ground at their facility because there is Parvo all over here. Will not take the puppy back nor adopt another dog from this facility. After a very thorough email with details of issues, adoption fee was returned.
I just got my puppy on Friday ( Today is Monday, November 18, 2019 ). We are very much in love with this one. She is 4 months old, and she already knows the rules of the house ( Amazing for a puppy her age ), and is almost scary smart. I know that has nothing to do with the shelter, but it does say something about their ability to match this puppy with her furever home. The facility it such a happy and exiting place, with great environment, clean facilities, and amazingly helpful staff. The dogs are well groomed, well fed, and loved by the employees/volunteers, who do a great job helping families find the latest addition to their homes. If you are serious about committing to the responsibility of a Dog, cat, or small animal alike. COME TO WAYSIDE WAIFS. You will not be disappointed.
Very helpful staff. Large facilities. No kill shelter. Lots of parking. Was not a lot of available adoptions this time, Jan2020. But that is a good problem. Shelter was clean, considering its nature.
Our experience adopting here was awesome, everyone was so helpful and friendly. We adopted a pup fka banana now known as Sasha and she is truly the highlight of our days. When you’re around her you just can’t stop laughing
Im glad Wayside Waifs has such updated facilities. I saw it first in the early 90s. However, my experience on August 17th an event day was awful. Heres how it went. Wait in a line to meet an animal and pick out animals you MIGHT get to meet, stand in another line to present your choices only to be told half were already adopted, decide to wait for 2 1/2 hours to see IF you might get to meet any of the animals. FINALLY, you see the only dog that wasnt adopted on your list. Hes a good dog and you decide youll be a good fit only to be told to wait another hour and a half. You go have lunch. Youre called back to wait another 45 minutes. More paperwork is filled out. Fine, I was committed. I still am. Hodge, formerly known as Bronx, has a very loving home despite not being sent home with antibiotics that he needed. I was called 3 days later about his URI. I called and after waiting 2 hours for Wayside Waifs to call me back I just made an appointment with the vet that will care for him from now on to make sure I had the necessary health care for our new family member.
Great experience with this shelter. Staff was knowledgeable about animals and very helpful with any questions we had. We left with (Scout), now Nova, and she has been a great addition to our family. I will recommend Wayside Waifs to all my friends and family.
Found a cat online that I fell in love with and immediately drove out to Wayside Waifs to meet her. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Everything was thoroughly explained to me and all my questions answered. I would recommend adopting a pet from Wayside Waifs any day! Thank you for my “vampire” girl! 🐈
I love this place. I recently adopted a 3 month old & a 4 month old kitten. They are perfect together. They are healthy and very happy. The staff was wonderful and caring. All the cats looked well taken care of. My son and I are going to volunteer here. You do have to be patient with them. Its a big place. Have a carrier if your going to adopt a cat and bring a leash and collar with you if your going to adopt a dog. Be patient with them, they adopt a lot of animals. We were very well taken care of through the whole process even though they were busy.
My experiences while old and dated, were very good here. We adopted in 2011, 2014, and 2015 and while each experience was different each one was just as great. Our oldest, Kamiko, was the best family dog we ever had and he had a great life with us until we lost him to cancer last year. Our experience with the staff and seeing their excitement and joy at him finding a home in us is what brought us back to adopt his sister Belle (formerly known as Pancake) in 2014 and then Venus (formerly known as Minnie) in 2015. I no longer live in KC, but I still support and tell people I know in KC about wayside. Without them I we never would have found our new best friends and family members, let them help you find your new best friend!
We took our dog to the dog park at Wayside Waifs to try it out. 45min of play with a lovely dog and thinking we would come here going forward, a couple with a large German Shepherd came in. The GS immediately chased my dog around and around the entire area, until he pinned him against the fence and bit him in the back. My dog came running to me with a large, bloody hole in his back and crying in pain. The owners apologized, said it wasnt a bad bite, and made their dog sit next to mine to apologize. My dog was terrified of him and we left immediately. We told the lady at the front desk what happened and she told us to fill out an incident report, which we did. She asked the name of the dog and we told her. She said ah, yes weve had issues with him before. The GS had a shock collar on but whether or not it was used is unknown to us. It should not have been in the park to begin with if its aggressive and cant be controlled. Especially when its already had previous instances of aggression with other dogs in the park. The lady at the desk told us the owners were some of the facilitys largest financial sponsors so nothing would be done about the dog being allowed in. We took my dog to the vet straight away, costing us almost $300. I emailed Wayside Waifs a few weeks later about the incident and they offered us a months membership to the dog park. Why would I bring my dog here again? My dog has never been the same since this traumatic experience and for this reason alone I will never return to Wayside Waifs.
I am trying to give this cat a forever home. Is there anyone that can help me with giving it up for adoption? She is about 2-3 years old, good with kids, and loves to play and cuddle.
A week ago we adopted a beautiful Pyrenees Collie mix, My husband and went with the thought of getting a puppy. We are thrilled that they introduced Payton to us. She is a total love bug. as they said. Everyone was so helpful. Adopting a 1 year old was totally the right decision. You can tell how much the volunteers love the animals and what they do. My hat is off to Wayside Waifs.
We went to see about getting another dog for our family. The lady who helped us was a totally rude. The entire reason we ask to see a dog is to how the dog will react with our son. She acted like we didnt know anything about dogs, and treated us as we were stupid. We asked to see two different dogs and was told we could see both dogs. Well we only got to see one. She acted like we would be there forever with the dogs we wanted to see. Thanks Morgan you may have just cost Dave a wonderful home with a wonderful family.
Great experience. Everyone is friendly and answers all your questions. We met with our puppy twice, and staff had a lot of information ready to tell me. Big open rooms to play and meet in. Our adoption counselor was GREAT! She was so nice and answered any questions and took the time to help us. She even called to follow up when we put a hold on the dog. It did take a while to get the adoption going and paper work, but it was saturday mid day, so it was to be expected. Clean, professional and overall great place! Cant wait to come back and get another furry friend for our pup!
My boyfriend and I adopted a dog from here in January 2019. We had an extremely pleasant experience. When we first got there we werent sure if the dog we saw online was still available. We told the desk which dog we wanted to see, and we waited about 20 minutes for an answer on if he was still there. The dog was still available but was on hold. They told us we could see him, but that he was on hold for the rest of the day and we wouldnt be able to adopt him until the next morning. We decided to visit him, so a volunteer took us to a room to play with him. The volunteer, Chas, was extremely friendly to us. We decided we were going to put a second hold on him so that we could be the first to have a chance to adopt him the next day. Chas told us they were extremely busy and we should be prepared to wait a while before we could fill out the paperwork for the hold; turns out we were lucky and only had to wait about 5 minutes. As we were doing the paperwork, the family that had him on hold called to say they werent adopting him, so we were able to take him home that night. The process from walking in to leaving with our dog probably took about 2 hours (the adoption paperwork took quite a while). The establishment was extremely clean - much cleaner than I was expecting and the dogs have great living spaces. The only thing Ill note to be aware of is the age they estimate for the pets. They told us the dog we were adopting was 3, but we had a hard time believing this just by looking at how white his teeth were and how much energy he had. When we took him to the vet they told us he was around 9-18 months. He also had kennel cough, but it went away on its own after about two weeks (our vet said it would go away, so no medications were needed). I would recommend this place to anyone. We love our dog very much!
Animals are badly tested The cat was with mites.
This is an amazing organization. They care for every aspect of the animal from mental well being to physical. They address medical concerns with the on site vet clinic and have teams to address behavior issues. The facility is one of the cleanest I have seen. There are no obnoxious chemical smells so the animals and workers have a safe environment to work in. They truly care for the animals.
One of our kitty family got sick very suddenly and had to be put down. We went to wayside waifs to get a new kitten to join our family. We went the day after Thanksgiving so our whole family could go. They were extremely busy. Let me just say how incredibly professional and knowledgeable our adoption counselor was. We adopted baby kitty named Puck. He is so warm and wonderful. I just cant say enough about the staff maintaining their composure. The people that the staff have to deal with are not always nice. Very entitled people I witnessed expecting everything right now. I couldnt be as nice as the staff was. I have nothing but respect. Kudos to all of you. And thank you for our baby. We will be back for any future adoptions. My oldest son also went here a few months ago and had a very positive experience.
My husband and I adopted a husky/malamute mix from Wayside in June 2012. Our experience there was wonderful. We made a trip to see the dog on a Friday, and the staff was very friendly and helpful. We came back to pick her up on Sunday and we received the same great treatment as we finished her adoption. Several weeks after her adoption, we got a call from Wayside to see how our new pup was doing. This is a great shelter - it is very clean and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. The animals are well cared for.
We stop by every time we are traveling in the area. It is an awesome place and the people are so nice. You can just see the love they have for the animals. Our dogs love the dog park too. Tori knows long before we get to it where we are headed and she has only been there a few times. They do so much for animals this is one charity I love giving to.
We got a dog from ASPCA and wanted a friend for our new dog so a few months later we went to wayside waifs and found what we that was a good match. However the new dog we got started getting aggressive with our original dog attacking him. So we called wayside waifs to see if they had an exchange policy like ASPCA dose because that want you to get the perfect pet for you family. Wayside waifs dose not and if it doesnt work out you need to pay them to return the dog! I would say go to ASPCA they are a lot nicer staff and want to help both you and the animals they have.Side note I gave the other dog we couldnt keep to my mom and the dog is doing great at her house.
We adopted a puppy from here in August. It was a great experience. Unfortunately, our puppy unbeknownst to anyone had a brain disorder that progressed very quickly and he lost his ability to walk. We had to put him to sleep towards the end of October at 5 months old. The staff was so gracious, sensitive, and made us feel comfortable. I will definitely adopt from here again. Great people doing great work and providing amazing customer service. Thank you, wayside waifs for helping us through this difficult time.
My wife is a travel nurse and we move about every 3 months. We were wanting a small dog to share our travels. We went to Wayside, mostly just to look around. After walking around the facility, we saw him. A small black and tan terrier mix. His name was Ferguson. We brought him out to one of the playrooms and in no time, he was sitting in my lap, like he belonged there. After about 30 seconds of intense debate, we decided he was perfect and we had to have him. A couple of hours later, he was riding in the car on his way to his new home. We have since moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho and he rode the whole way like a champ. They have an awesome dog park here and he gets so excited to go. He loves playing with the big dogs. He has a 110 pound attitude in a 10 pound body.
We have now adopted two kitties from Wayside and couldnt be happier. Our first was a Siamese that we adopted when he was a year old, and he was the sweetest most loving cat. Ive now gone back to adopt a second time (its been about 14 years between adoptions) and I am still impressed and pleased with the staff here. My new little kitten is a big sweetheart and loves people already - I can tell theyre doing things right. I would definitely go back for another adoption in the future.
We had a really great experience with Wayside Waifs. Our family was looking for a new bestie and the staff was so helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. I appreciated the time they took to learn about our family and what we were looking for with a new pet. Thanks Wayside we love our LuLu!
No Compassion with Pet MemorialsI called this morning when they opened and asked the receptionist if they still offered euthanasia and pet cremations. She told me yes and she would give the person who ran the department a message to contact me a.s.a.p. I was told she would be in around 10:00am. At 1:00pm I called and talked to the head of the department who told me she never got the massage and sorry our vet is booked up today. So we waited all morning for nothing and the vet cannot make an emergency appointment for this kind of situation? I guess Wayside has no compassion for a dying animal. This ends my financial support for this organization. Humane...I think not!
Extremely rude adoption counselor. As someone who fosters dogs, she was extremely judgmental when I wanted to adopt an older dog. Upsetting.
Three years ago my now husband adopted a German Shepherd mix from Wayside. Aspen had been found as a stray and was one of the animals they were contractually obligated to take. He wanted a running companion and was told she would be a good fit, the only catch was that she had a seizure while in the shelter. He was willing to work with that since she was 5 and he has a soft spot for disadvantaged cats and dogs. When he brought her home we noticed she had pain during urination, and when he took her in for her post-adoption screen the vet told him she was suffering from urinary incontinence due to recently being spayed, and that she was trapping the urine causing burning and ulcers in the area. There were medical treatments but she would probably need surgery costing around $800. She also had arthritis and had difficulty walking medium distances, much less running. Despite their alleged return and treatment guaranties, when we went to see them a few days after the adoption they refused to help with the problems and said she could not be returned because after less than a week with those problems she was unadoptable. We paid for the surgery and now spend $50-70 per month to treat the incontinence and arthritis in on top of the surgery costs. The epilepsy has not recurred for the past two years and she is a member of the family. Wayside lied about both her health and what they would do if we complied with their rules. Also, despite what they claim in their current fundraiser for a new building, they do classify dogs as unadoptable, even when they just adopted them to someone else.Despite this bad experience my husband began volunteering up there to help with the pain of his daughter and grandson passing away earlier this year. While he claims most of the staff and other volunteers were great, the management and volunteer coordinator are still as untrustworthy as during the prior adoption. One of the coordinators favorites repeatedly publicly insulted him, and instead of talking to her they blamed him. When this person claimed he was unfit to adopt one of the animals because he wouldnt take care of or work with it, despite the thousands of dollars and time to help out Aspen, they initially backed her and blamed him again even though he had not reported it or said anything back. When the person again publicly attacked him only a few weeks after his brothers death recently he did report it as the volunteer coordinator and manual said he should. Rather than deal with disciplining a favorite, she tried to claim he was resigning. When told that he was not, he just wanted the public harassment to stop, she terminated his being a volunteer because he did not fit what she wanted. She also stated he was being let go because he did not follow her version of conflict resolution, namely her favorites could insult and degrade at will with nothing being done and people like my husband should just agree to take it and do nothing, nothing else was ever mentioned. She would not even talk to him for 5 minutes before letting him go, and was only willing to do so after he either agreed to resign or was terminated, and made it clear he could not come back and she would do nothing to the party that had instigated the matter yet again. This is a common pattern. My husband was bitten in the face by one of their dogs while trying to take it out for a walk, and after having some self trained individuals spend time with him are going to put him out for public adoption. One of their favorites couldnt control a different dog and he bit another dog at the shelter. They killed that dog. Despite his having volunteered there for over 455 hours since 2/19 (>60 hours per month), no one at Wayside can spend five minutes to answer our questions or even respond to an email. I was also going to volunteer there but no more.
DO NOT TRUST THE WAYSIDE WAIFS VETERINARY STAFF! We had a good experience actually adopting our sweet new dog Ralph, but the vets missed a parasite (coccidia) during his exit exam. When we noticed something was wrong with our new dog and called Wayside, and we were met with apathy and disinterest with our dogs symptoms by the staff, who were very apprehensive at the idea of bringing Ralph in to see the Wayside vet. They told us to wait a few more days (the 10 day period we had to bring him back in to see their vet ever closing) and so we did. He got worse, and we finally decided to bring him in whether Wayside liked it or not. They ran tests and found the parasite and apologized for missing it the first time, but the medication they gave us was for the wrong thing. Not being vets ourselves, we went home with the meds and tried them for a week with no improvement. We called again and they once more were very rude and encouraged us not to bring him in. Once again, we did, and they discovered they made yet another mistake by giving us the wrong medication. They then gave us the correct medication, and tried to see us out, but this time we knew they were border-line incompetent and asked some questions. Through these questions, we found that though this time they gave us the correct medication, they only gave us 1/3 the correct dose. They again apologized and called out a better vet to fix the issue once and for all. While we have always supported Wayside Waifs and still support their mission, and we had a good adoption experience, the rude and incompetent nature of their veterinary staff is appalling and makes me very concerned for every dog that has ever left their facility. If they are not going to appropriately and effectively treat dogs for shelter related illnesses within the allotted 10 day period as stipulated by the adoption contract, they should just take the clause out.
We went in today to look at adopting a cat, the volunteers were exceptional. The cats were obviously well taken care of. The Adoption Counsler we had was super nice! She answered any and all questions I had. If you’re looking to adopt, this is the place!
As a previous volunteer I feel that the volunteer training as well as the process is greatly flawed. I didnt volunteer often but I feel that my time I did give was not appreciated. I volunteered at another animal shelter in another state and have something to compare my experience. There are no mirrors of the walks so as a volunteer you have no clue if another dog is coming around the corner when you are walking a dog.In my other shelter there was a system that as a new volunteer you only would walk and socialize with a certain temperament of dog depending on your comfort level as well as hours volunteered. At this shelter they gave us a teddy bear to pretend to put the leash on and was approved to work all level of dogs. With their process as well as the large size of the dogs I would often counter with the puppies and any small mild mannered dog they would have. One day I got an award phone call indirectly pushing me to interact with all dogs......Not getting paid as a volunteer so I wont volunteer to do anything that I see could be potentially harmful due to lack of controlled processes, so since I didnt feel fully welcomed or appreciated I havent returned since.I have mixed feelings of if I would recommend anyone to adopt here due to the volunteer program
We just a adopted an adorable 2 month old kitten we love her so much. The staff at wayside was so patient with us while we found the perfect kitten. I would definitely recommend this place to people.
This place is amazing! The adoption process is quick and painless. Their employees really made us feel welcome and their ultimate goal is to find homes for their animals. I would recommend this place to everyone looking for a pet. Love this place!!!!!
I love it but i did not go yet
Our dog had gotten stolen from us and after 3 weeks of searching long and hard, we eventually found out she had been taken to wayside waifs and she was very well taken care of there! The managers and the staff are the nicest and most helpful people!!! I would absolutely recommend adopting an animal here!!! This place is GREAT!!!! We will never forget our experience with Wayside Waifs!!! Thanks for everything that you did!
Me and my son visited Saturday the 14th. I first layed eyes on Houlihan. But we keep looking. But I keep going back to him. We visited with him and I debated if I was gonna wait. We we decided 2 take him that day. I know it hasnt been but a couple days but me and my family love Houlihan aka King. We renamed him King. My husband even loves him and he doesnt really do animals. That was the best decision we made. Pictures coming soon. Thankyou
Adopt dont shop! If you are looking for a furry companion...dog/puppy, cat/kitten, rabbits and more...Wayside Waifs is a well ran pet adoption facility. All animals come spayed/neutered and with a microchip. However they did require me to buy a collar and leash for my 4mo puppy but told me I had to carry him--no ground contact--until he gets his last round of shots, which didnt make much sense to me. They have a good policy where if the pet you adopted isnt working out in your home for whatever reason, you can bring it back and they will use your adoption fee on a different pet instead. Wayside is a very thorough, professional and caring shelter and I definitely recommend them. Theres no better feeling than giving a loving home to a pet that was spending its life locked in a cage.
I adopted two kittens from here and they were up for adoption while being diagnosed with a respiratory infection. I don’t know why they hadn’t helped them get healthy before the adoption, however they gave me eye drops and enough of another medication to heal them lasting a month, even though they have a 10 day period to bring them back which doesn’t make sense because we wouldn’t have been able to see any progress. After that didn’t work I took them to a vet twice and they diagnosed them with a herpes virus in cats that can cause sneeze attacks and watery/blurry eyes. $600 dollars later they were still ill and I brought them back to Wayside Waifs hoping they could come up with a second opinion and fix their mistake of not helping them properly in the first place. After calling 3 times and being put on hold for over 20 minutes each time, I walked in with the cats they looked at me like I was dumb and told me “they aren’t open to the public”, I immediately got upset considering I adopted them from Wayside Waifs and brought the folder of proof of all the medical expenses and illnesses that I have gone through. With this said I will never be adopting an animal from here again.
I took a fostering class on 8/24/19, and it was clean. The employees and staff were so sweet, nice and caring!
Never had the chance to do business with them. Thats primarily due to them ignoring all my calls and emails that went there way. Only to find out the did I was about to adopt had been already adopted. Thanks for ignoring me. Had a good home for the dog and you took that away from me
I adopted my 8 year old cat Mausi from Wayside Waifs. They really care about the pets they take in and make sure they get adopted by responsible people. If I were to take another pet in, I would definitely go back here!!
Dont waste your time contacting management, they wont respond and will protect the discriminatory practices of their staff to protect their favorites. I was a recent volunteer and after being abused publicly, followed their rules and contacted the volunteer coordinator who proceeded to try and twist events around and would not speak with me. When I corrected her rewritten history of the current and similar past events with what really happened I was dismissed with no hearing or reason other than I did not seem to comply with her conflict resolution policy. The only policy she ever presented was that her favorites could insult and degrade animals and people, and the person could just accept it because she would do nothing to them, and censure the person attacked. Furthermore no one will respond to say why protesting public abuse was grounds for dismissal, then the let the abuser remain while getting rid of the person attacked. While most of the staff and other volunteers were pleasant to work with, I had volunteered to help out the animals, not join a clique or brown nose the coordinator and management which seems to be the only way to protect yourself and may explain why many new volunteers seemed to leave or quit coming, while those in the groups were there for years, many protecting their territory.Despite what management claims, the only professionally trained staff besides the veterinarians seem to be in the financial and administrative sector. It was alarming that the others were the ones in charge of evaluating and behavior modification of the animals after a quick hour long online or in person class, and they also seemed to be the ones involved in deciding when a dog or cat should be terminated. The latter seemed to happen more than they let on as it seemed a dog or cat was taken off the floor for some reason, then never seen or heard from again because they had decided it was unadoptable. Also take their presentations with a grain of salt. I have adopted twice from there. The first time they misrepresented the health of the dog saying it would be a good running partner when it had severe arthritis, and then failing to mention she had urinary incontinence from being spayed, and it was causing burning in the area which required expensive surgery to correct. Even when told of it a few days after the adoption they would not help, or even take her back (which I did not want anyway) claiming she was unadoptable. To date I have spent over $3000 on her medical expenses, but we still love her and she is part of the family. Even after all that when I recently wanted to adopt a cat from them that no one else seemed to want, the person I had the recent problems with cried out I was not going to take care of or love her and would just bring her back in worse condition, despite what I had already done for the dog previously. She was initially backed by management as she is one of their favorites and I was denied. Later, after no one else would take her do to the persons inaccurate and biased personality assessment of the cat I did adopt her and she has adjusted and fits in great with all species, including humans, out at the farm.Despite all the responses claiming concern for public and volunteer bad experiences, dont waste your time contacting them, it is a PR stunt. I worked 60+ hours per month for the past 7 months at Wayside, and though I have contacted several members of management to find out why they had tried to claim reporting a second verbal attack from the same person resulted in that person staying while they tried to force my resignation and then tossed me from the program when I responded I did not want to leave. . No one responded and the coordinator was only willing to talk after she made her irrevocable decisions and nothing could be done.
First time trying to rescue an animal and they stole $160 from me and refused to refund me after having to bring a dog they had no information on that they received from Louisiana back after it jumped on my son and scratched his face up and after multiple times of him circling and charging toward me and my son. We were heartbroken we had already fell in love with they dog but our safety was more important. they refused to give me my money back because that is their policy WHICH WAS NEVER STATED OUT LOUD TO ME and when they pointed it out in the contract I signed I remember the lady that did the adoption with me told me initial here initial here here and here and then she closed the booklet and never informed me of what it was or said to look over it or anything.
Extremely kind and helpful staff! The facilities are so nice for the animals too. It is clear that they really care about the welfare and correct placement of their animals!
This place is the most helpful place!! The staff and everybody is so nice! And I would also like to thank them for helping all those animals!!!❤️🐾
Back in the 90s, the adoption process was easy and quick. Fast forward to today, its like buying a car - all day process.I adopted a dog late April. In July, we noticed a large lump. Had the dog looked at by three local vets. Was told the dog has cancer and would need to be put down or I could spend a huge chunk of money on biopsies and surgeries.Since we hadnt had the dog long, vet told me they would not do anything and recommend that I take the dog back to wayside waifs, tell them what was going on and if they had any questions or problems they can call vet directly.I was off, so I went ahead and took the dog back to wayside waifs. Immediately upon entering the lady asked if it had been more than 10 days since adoption and if so I couldnt bring the dog back. She didnt even ask why I was there or what was wrong.I just interrupted and asked her to listen. I told her I just came from local vet, described the problem and told her if they had more questions they were to call my vet as reccomend. The lady went and down the hall and brought back wayside waifs vet. I preceded to tell him exactly what my vet said and told him if he had questions to call my vet.He told me he was the vet who looked at and worked on dog upon his arrival to the facility. He seen the large lump, size of my hand, on the dog, but said that didnt exist when he was orginally seen and there was nothing they could do now. He refused to call my vet.Im like the middle man, not sure what to do. He could have worked with local vet to determine a course of action for the dog. That refusal resulted in the loss of very long time donator.Dog is still alive. He cant chew well so food is softened for him. He cant go on walks because he collapses and I cant pick him up. Not sure how long hell make it.Autistic son asked and asked for a dog. Got him a dog and now Im not sure who needs more attention.
Great with schools. Also so caring when you need to put a loving furr baby to sleep.
I’ve been to visit there on two different occasions, and the first occasion, the woman working the sign in desk, in which we all signed in to view the animals, she was extremely RUDE! It shocked me at how rude and unwelcoming she was, she made us feel so uncomfortable that we left... so the following week, my daughter and I decided to go back, because we are looking to adopt a kitten, we signed in and once again the same lady was there, still very RUDE, but this day we decided to just ignore her unprofessionalism and sign in to view the kittens... so we go in the back and literally.. everyone we encountered that worked there was so RUDE!!!!!! Omg it blew my mind, they were treating us as if we were a nuisance If I asked questions. I was reading the reviews and I seen some pretty good reviews, that’s shocking because twice we were treated so rudely!
I have adopted two different cats at Wayside Waifs and they are both absolutely wonderful healthy kitties! Very clean facility and helpful staff. This is a great place to find the newest addition to your family!
Outstanding! They go above and beyond to help dogs and cats find great homes. Facilty is impressive and the staff are awesome!
Went in to get a companion for my dog that I adopted from there. We did a meet and great the dogs did fine was going to do a slumber pawty put $20 down on the dog. They took the dog back to the vet and said the dog has an upper respiratory infection so I couldnt take the dog home. Week later we go back to look at the other dogs and do another meet and great and they told my girlfriend and I that another dog wouldnt be good your dog was adopted out before and put another dog in the hospital. I found that funny because my dog goes to dog parks and doesnt show any aggression toward other dogs or people. None of what they told us was in my dogs paper work and they didnt say anything when I was going to bring home that sick dog. Now I lost $20 since they claim to be a nonprofit organization. I wonder how many people they have done this to.
The most impressive animal shelter I have ever seen in my whole entire life!!! and I have been to a lot of shelters in my day. oh my gosh this place is nice. the staff is friendly and cares so much about animals. they keep things clean and handle the animals regulary. they even have half price adoption deals at times which is really nice. I dont know if I will get any more animals than the cat I already have now that i adopted from them but if I do it will be from wayside waifs!!
My dog got out of our bag yard. We searched for days and finally called the pound. Being there from Friday until Monday will cost me two hundred dollars to get him back. I asked the lady why is it so much, she said its like a ticket for parking in the wrong spot. So youre punishing me for trying to get my dog back that escaped while we were at work. I wouldnt go here to adopt, look how youre treated as a owner. Its not about the animal going back to his family. But how much money can we get out of that family. Whom ever said love doesnt cost a thing, never did business with Wayside Waifs.
I adopted my Annabelle from wayside waifs and I couldnt be happier. So blessed to have her in my life.
I adopted a 2 month old puppy a couple weeks ago and is the best rescue dog I have ever seen!! This puppy loves me and is very attached to me. I can not ask for a better dog!! I would definitely chose a rescue dog over a purebred dog. They are so much better dogs. Most people turn them down because they think that they have health problems. (blah blah blah) I bet you that these dogs at Wayside Waifs are much healthier than purebreds. **My favorite breeds are rescues**
Adopted a great dog there about a week ago. Very pleased with the customer service that my family and I received there. Highly recommend this place.
We adopted a senior boy from Wayside Waifs about l0 days ago. He was apprehensive and standoffish, but in a few days it was as though hed always lived here. Not sure he has ever been around dogs, but he quickly became the King of his self-proclaimed kingdom. Cannot imagine him living anywhere else but here! The staff was friendly, courteous and kind. The foster Father, Keith was a wonderful addition to Olivers life, he cared for him until we had the opportunity to fall in love with little Oliver. A representative from Wayside Waifs even called a few days later to check on Olivers new surroundings and how everyone was doing. Very kind, loving gesture on WWs behalf.Thank you so much!
I adopted a dog from Wayside Waifs and was very impressed with every aspect of the experience.
They were terrific in helping me choose my furry kid. A year later and I am still happy
My boyfriend and I went in a couple months ago looking for a dog, and we adopted a 5 year old lab mix that had been there for a month. That’s what it had said on the website and on the tag on the kennel he was in. They also said he was healthy and was just recovering from kennel cough. After taking him to the vet Wayside Waifs recommended, we were told he was not 5, but around 12. TWELVE. It wasn’t kennel cough that he had, but laryngeal paralysis, onset with old age. He also had severe arthritis, bladder issues, and other issues that would cost us so much money to fix. The clerks and cashiers at Pet Smart were even able to tell that our dog was older than 5. It’s safe to say that what we thought was a reputable establishment either lied to us about the age of our dog or was not thorough enough in his check up to realize what was going on. We love our dog dearly and are grateful to have him, but we will never come back to Wayside Waifs.
The first time I went i felt pressured by Daniel to get the dog, it’s like he didn’t want me to have a hold on her. Then the second time, Megan was friendly but then I called the day after & they knew nothing about the adoption from the previous day. I feel as if i was treated unfairly.
I got a dog here 3 years back hes great. Love my baby. Going to get another today...
I adopted a cute little dog named butterfinger he was so cute and loveable and now he is super big and loves cuddles and kiddos also kittens and loves cuddling with other breeds of dogs also thanks wayside for giving me this wonderful fog
Normally dont write reviews but the experience was just so bad. Doubt management will do anything but give fair warning to others. The organization of this place is awful will usually ask you the same question 5 times in a 15 minute span. Having to wait over an hour for a dog to dog you can see where these questions can get annoying. After waiting an hour was told to do a second visit, told to call ahead so our dog wont be nervous again and should have a better experience. After following advice and calling to make sure my dog doesnt have to wait another hour was told dont worry about an appointment were slow. So just to arrive to a magically much busier place and told Id have to wait at least a hour for a dog to dog.To all the people having a great experience happy for you and really just hope the animals find a place to live. Just fair warning to others though.
Incredibly rude staff. I simply asked if there were any small breeds that were going to be available soon. They refused to answer me, & referred me to their broken website with nonfunctional pet alerts. I do not like being discriminated against because I am handicapped. Wayside Waifs, you should be ashamed of your staffs conduct. It is extremely difficult for me to travel, let alone go an hour out of town for the privilege & honor of being discriminated against & being treated like the manure that your staff refuses to scoop from their animals cages. Wayside Waifs, you should be ashamed of your tolerance of your prejudicial, discriminatory staff. For shame.
I volunteer here regularly and have gotten two amazing pups from here. This shelter is beyond amazing.
I went here on the craziest time of year for them; $25 adoptions on all pets! And after waiting forever, we finally found the perfect doggie for us, and despite the craziness, they were still eager to help us adopt! Will definitely adopt again when the time comes, but for now were so happy with our girl. :)
