I rented a car from them and got stranded twice due to battery, the second time I was told it would take 8 hour to get another car to me or I could drive it back tot he airport and pick up a new one, once I got to the airport the people there told me that due to covid most of their batteries are bad due to sitting so long, and they gave me 600 off and a better rental and told me dont fill up the car with gas. To my dismay I found out they did not take off the 600 and they billed me another 200 something for getting a jump start. DO NOT RENT FROM THEM!

Writing this to hopefully give some solace to people who are worried about poor reviews. I had an overall great experience here.We got to the counter about 15 minutes after our scheduled time, but didnt have to wait at all to speak to someone. They were able to get us the car we reserved, despite record shortages for vehicles on the island thanks to Covid. They did not try to upsell me or sneak in additional options, and didnt charge me for any bogus stuff after dropping off the car.Half way through the week, we got a tire pressure and oil change notice on the dash - luckily we were right by the airport at the time, so we called ahead and spoke with a manager, who had another matching vehicle waiting for us when we got there, and were plenty accommodating in letting us pull the vehicles up next to each other to transfer all our stuff. Whole swap took maybe 20 minutes.Vehicles arent brand new, but were clean and perfectly functional.I dont know if they made some improvements over the last couple years or something, but I didnt have any of the negative experiences other reviews have mentioned. If youre on the fence, Id say give them a shot!

No doubt Payless is cheap but the reviews that people stayed here for hours waiting for a car are all true. When we got there, there was at least a 2 hour wait, with some people saying they had already been there for 3 hours. You have to first wait outside and then you can go inside. Likely, I didn’t prepay so I went to AdVantage, which had a 45 minute wait. They will only have 2 people working inside, the return process looks lengthy. One person returning their car also reported that their car broke down. We can at 5pm, the best time to come is when they open. I think most car agencies have a long wait, though Payless has the longest wait as it is the cheapest.

I got off the shuttle bus at OGG airport and i thought all those people were waiting to return to the terminal for a flight, ...wrong,. I made my way to the building door and was told it was a 30 minute wait to be called into the building. That 30 minutes turned out to be one hour and 15 minutes. When I finally got inside there were 30-40 people (at least as it was hard to count in the long rows) in front of me and only one customer was processed in the 10 minutes before I had had enough and walked next door to Hertz and rented a car in less than 5 minutes. I went next door as I had concluded that it would take at least 2, possibly 3 hours from arrival at the remote Budget/Payless location to actually drive away in a car. It was a shocking experience, Im in my 50s and have never experienced this level of poor service anywhere in the world - much less in the US. The kicker is that the walk-up at Hertz was only $25 extra (total - yes only $6.25 more per day) on a four day rental. Additionally there were no explanations from the Payless staff, no water bottles, nothing. Check out the pics, inside the empty stations speak for themselves and outside it was worse as many people were outside the frame. My advice, steer clear....

My experience at the desk went without issue. It was disappointing that so much effort went into explaining what would happen if I didnt return the vehicle with a full tank but got into a vehicle with 3/4 of a tank. It wasnt worth my time going back up to the counter to deal with the issue. Generic email response from customer service.Not going back.Dont rent from them.

Double check tires.. breaks and battery... This car is awful... Broken and unsafe.. wouldnt answer the phone. Do not have an email address, no customer service. Im driving back to the airport to return the car right now... Hopefully they will make this right for me

I would honestly give zero stars if that were an option. When we arrived, there were 2 people in front of me in line who said they had been waiting over an hour? There was one unhappy employee who did not seem to have any time awareness. We were told that the computer system had gone down and rentals were being processed manually. I dont know how that works, but an average of 40 minutes per reservation seems kinda like youre just not trying. Anyway, after about 70 minutes and the first agent just packing up her stuff and leaving.....taking about 15 minutes for someone else to show up- we got to our car. (note: we had been repeatedly calling customer service and getting transferred multiple times until we got disconnected - every time) The car was VERY badly-tuned (my husband thought maybe transmission was going out or something) and lurched upon acceleration--every time. It also had some type of greasy/cloudy substance on the windows and mirrors. We had tried to secure another rental car reservation online during our time in the line---and there literally were NONE in Maui? Anyway, we figured it would be an eternity to get another car (what with all the manual processing by people who hate their job). The car was absolutely horrible the entire 3 days we had it, but we were staying on the other side of the island and didnt want to spend the time to drive back and try to exchange it. Drop off was smooth (the only employee we encountered who seemed to care about customer service). I would NOT recommend this place!

This car was extremely poorly maintained. We were at the very top of Haleakala and the BRAKES WENT OUT(!!!!!!) Check engine light appeared, maintenance light appeared and oil and battery light started flashing. The power steering went out and the accelerator stopped working. It was absolutely terrifying. Very surprising that it happened bc the car only had 36k miles on it. We were able to push the car into the visitor center at the top of the mountain and park it in a safe parking spot.The customer service was very frustrating- it took them nearly two hours to pinpoint where we were located. And then another 2 hours to negotiate with a tow truck company for a lower rate to pick us up. The tow truck driver said he waited at the Payless rental shop for 1 hour before they would release the car to him. Payless told the driver that they had no records of communication and therefore could not release the car to him. We called the store trying to help escalate the issue but no one ever answered. Our replacement vehicle worked just fine and had no issuesWhen returning the car, the manager could have cared less about this terribly scary and utterly unsafe vehicle that he gave us. He only offered us $11 off for our inconvenience. I wish I had made a bigger scene because there were about 30 people in line and they should all walk right out of that store and go anywhere else.Also to note, we met another couple on the island who also rented from Payless and had to be towed because of mechanical issues. I met a man in line who said he was waiting in line for a vehicle swap because the first car they gave him didnt even turn on!

Worst ever. Charged more than what my reservation said. Said I was required to buy a full tank of gas from them because it was in the contract. Slow. Liars. Deceitful. Dont answer the phone. Cars are not well maintained. Go anywhere else. Do yourself a favor.

I have rented cars here more times than I can remember. The employees remember me, greet me warmly and hustle (literally run!) to shuttle us back and forth to the airport. The cars are always clean and the best deal on the island. I dont pay for insurance though, my personal policy covers car rentals.

Horrible experience picking up a vehicle that was made as a reservation. Got off the airport shuttle then had to put name on a list just to Wait until called to get inside. List was unorganized, hardly legible, the worker had no people skills. Wait of 45 minutes outside then to the inside line for another 25 minutes. For a place that does car rentals as their business this is unacceptable. There is a reason that everyone is going to self help/automated kiosks that people can sign in and order things on their own.

This is for the Budget/Payless car rental in Maui. Slowest possible service.You will wait 30 min for a shuttle to get to the rental lot, then two more hours in line to get to the front desk. The desk will take at least 15 min to process you.Attitude of employees was pleasant. They offered water to people waiting in line but the unexpected long wait made it a horrible experience.If you have to/want to be someplace quickly, I suggest a different rental company.

So I reserved my car online with Expedia for 02/13 10:30am to 02/16 10:30am. I got there at 1pm on 02/13 to pick up my car. According to their 72 hours policy, I can return the vehicle with no extra charges on 02/16 at 1pm. I addressed my concerned of “what if” I cannot return the car before 1pm to the lady who was helping me. She told me that there will be an extra day charges if I return the car before 9pm and after 1pm the same day. Then she said: “I can go ahead and put your return time as 9pm. There will be no extra day charges if you return the car at 1pm.” So I let her do it the way she explained, and I signed all of the agreements with the returning time as 02/16 at 9:00pm. However, I did return the car at 1pm on 02/16 because things were going within the plan. When I got back home, I saw that there was a $590.74 credited on my bank account. Originally, it will be only around $448 and some cents if I return the car at 1pm, which I did. I understand there was gas refill expense for me since I returned it half way full. So I called the service center asking for help. I received a reply next day, claiming there should be no refund and they did the right thing. I don’t understand, so I just got charged the extra $100 because I trusted the front desk lady? And where’s my final receipt? I was told that I will receive one. But where is it?

Very long wait times. Anticipate an hour or more to get your vehicle. Service was great and staff worked hard. Drop off was super easy, less than 5 mins. Shuttle service is great.

We received our economy car and made the usual checks before we left. After driving away I noticed a tire noise. I just assumed it was the trucks along the highway next to us. Alas, after driving up to Mount Haleakala and then checking the tire I NOTICED A TOTALLY WORN DOWN BALD SPOT ON THE REAR PASSENGER TIRE DOWN TO THE LAST BIT OF RUBBER. We had to make the trek back down the mountain to Payless 50 miles.I returned the Ford Fiesta and they offered a free upgrade to a Nissan Rogue. It was a nice gesture. To be honest I couldve done without it. I just wanted a SAFE CAR. Once we got our car we were off to enjoy the rest of our vacation, safely.My one star review is for the fact that the cars turnover so fast here, who knows what kind of safety checks are actually going through. And who knows how many people prior had this UNSAFE CAR but didnt know it. Lines about 45+ min at least to get to the counter. Another 10-15+ min to get car.If it was just me in the car I wouldnt have been as concerned, but with a pregnant wife it was NO BUENO!Plus, I even wrote an email Michael Beesing the Avis/Budget/ Payless group airport manager regarding this incident unfortunately without a reply.Renting economy cars should not be without a basic safety check. PERIOD. Good luck renting from here but do your due diligence and CHECK EVERYTHING!

The experience started off with a long line. Probably because of there great rental rates. Finally got to the counter and spoke to a lovely young pregnant lady. She told me my class of car was available, but they were offering a free upgrade to larger more comfortable vehicle. Being a larger man I thought about it. I proceeded to ask her questions to be certain I would not be charged anymore money than the original online rental purchase. She assured me there would be no additional charges. So I proceeded with the upgrade. I enjoyed the rental for the week. The vehicle was wonderful. When I returned the vehicle the lot attendant inspected the vehicle and printed a receipt. The receipt stated the full amount. I asked for explanation. She stated that there was the full amount in bold then the discount amount and then the amount I owed. It did not look right to me and I did not have time to go into the building to wait in the long line to speak to an agent. So I flew home and when I had a moment called and spoke to a customer service agent. He created a ticket and told me he could do nothing, it needed to be handled by the customer care representative and I would receive a call in 72 hours. 72 hours goes by I never received a call. I called again and the customer service agent told me they decided against my claim. I asked to speak to the customer care department. He told me I could not speak to a customer care agent or his direct manager. I asked for an explanation of why I could not speak to them. He could not give me an answer. I said fine I will dispute the charge through my Credit Card Co.While I was writing this review/complaint, I saw an ABC News article today that the BBB has now given Payless Auto Rental an F score for this same issue I just described. there are currently hundreds of complaints like mine. Just do a google search you will be surprised at all the negative complaints.

1 star too many. Took 2 hrs waiting to be driving away in a vehicle. Now 1 week into our vacation our car wont start. Called the roadside assistance number given by Payless only to discover number not in service. Called Payless rental location rang and rang with no voicemail then disconnected numerous times. Now having to rent with another company for the remainder of our vacation since after in excess of 2 hours trying different phone numbers no one answering at Payless. Wasting a beautiful day on Maui screwing around with this situation.

Never rent from here. One person working the counter. The sole worker left for lynch and left customers hanging. Took nearly 90 minutes with 6 customers ahead of me, to get a car. Use Hertz Avis Dollar Alamo but stay clear of Payless at this airport. Worst car rental experience ever. Customer Service is not something they care about.

What a horrific experience. We saved for months to be able to go on a week long vacation, and upon arrival we wound up waiting 3 hours to pick up our rental. The difference in price does not make it worth it. We have now spent an entire day waiting on our rental car.... I am seriously concerned about the problems we will face upon returning it. Seriously, spend the same amount of money to pick up your car and enjoy your vacation! 3 hours on a cement waiting pad is not only insulting, but a true reflection of how much you value your customers time. Unbelievably disappointing experience.

Waiting forever just to pick up the rental car. They do not have enough staff for a Saturday and they do not have technology to ease the car rental process. Go somewhere else where you can check it and out in 10 minutes or less for the same price

Two and a half hours from getting our checked bags to driving away in our rental car! Long lines for the van to get to the rental location and then crazy long lines once you got there. Budget and Payless are all one long line in the check out area so no advantage to spending more for Budget...unless you are on their fastbreak system. Both seem to have the same cars too. It was Easter Sunday that may have made a difference.Update...still the 2 week rental on a full size car was all we needed for by far the best price available and check-in at the end went smoothly taking only about 5 minutes with another 5 to get on a van to the terminal. I would rent from Payless again if the price is right! The OGG airport looks like car rentals will be much easier soon with all rentals moving to a new closer location in a new rental garage.

The employees who worked there were very friendly and seemed to be working very hard. The problem is this place is understaffed and poorly managed. If you have read other reviews on this place you will see a trend. We arrived shortly before 4pm had a reservation at 4pm and left the lot at 6pm. You will most likely wait in line for an hour to get to the front desk then wait another hour or 2 to wait for your reserved car. I talked with other customers who were waiting 3 hours to get their car.Since they are understaffed and working hard to get cars to the customers, it will probably affect the cleanliness of the car you receive. Our cup holders were full of crumbs and front dash was dirty, and the backseats were clearly stained with sweat stains.This place has the potential to be a great car rental place if there were more employees and better management.

One star is too many for this business. It took us 2.5 hours to get our vehicle. Staff was friendly, but there were only a few agents working, despite having 15-20 counter spots available.The first car we got, a Hyundai Elantra (license LGX911), was a dog. On the third day, the check-engine light came on, and the car began running rough. This only lasted a short time, but we exchanged the car for another one the following day.The second car, a Chevy Cruze (license LFU434), was also a dog. Its check-engine light was also lit. The transmission was terrible as were the brakes. There was also a nasty belt squeal.From my experience, the products provided seemed poorly maintained, and the office was inadequately staffed for a safe, worry-free rental. I will NEVER rent from this Avis/Budget/Payless office again.April 2019

We found this company on hotwire looking for a good rental deal. It was cheapest we found so we took it. Yes there was a wait at the rent place. If people prepare and have their information in order ahead of time the wait would not be as long as we were probably the quickest to leave once we got to the desk. We needed to extend our rental by two hours and after reading the reviews I was afraid that we were going to have trouble getting through. I got through to someone right away and was able to extend no problem. When we dropped the car off, we checked over the receipt and the attendant said that our balance was zero and no more charges so we were happy with that and the bill looked as we expected it. Our personal experience with this company was satisfactory.

Booked in advance through Travelocity and still had to wait an hour and a half. Also was charged 50% more than I was quoted online because they dont honour the Travelocity insurance option, they have their own which costs way more.Horribly under staffed, car wasnt what u wanted but it would have taken another 30-60mins to exchange it. Should have just used Uber or Turo.

The office is terrible! Last time we rented at budget, we were 3 hours in line. This trip I booked Payless and lo and behold they are now one and the same! 3 unfriendly people at the desk and we are now through our first hour! Way to welcome people to Maui!

We picked up our vehicle on April 25th, 2018. At the time there was one couple complaining to the agent about their experience, but we thought nothing of it. The agent gave us the parking lot spot to get our vehicle and sent us out to find it. When we went to leave the lot we were told we had the wrong vehicle. We went back and moved all of our bags to another car.We went to leave in the second vehicle and it only had a quarter tank of gas. The security guard told us gas was in the back and just pointed. We drove to the back and eventually had the vehicle filled.At 8PM we finally left the lot. On our drive to the hotel we noticed a funny sound coming from the drivers side wheel. When we backed into a parking spot we heard click click click which it the common sound of bad wheel bearings.The next morning we called the Payless store at OGG several times over a 45 minute window and nobody answered. At this point we lost faith that they could remedy the situation. We drove an hour back to the airport, arriving at 7:30 AM, and simply asked to have our money refunded so we could go somewhere else to pay more to get a dependable vehicle where we didnt have to worry about our safety. The lady said they didnt do refunds because we had already taken the car we would have to pay for the day.She offered us an upgraded vehicle. The upgraded vehicle was filthy. We ended up paying for one full day even though we had the car less than 12 hours and the only reason for the return was mechanical. The full refund was requested due to not being able to get ahold of anybody at the company and it did not give us confidence we could get assistance if it broke down.When we returned the vehicle there was another couple in the store trying to exchange their car due to a mechanical issue as well.Overall, we are out over $100 and a few hours of our time. It would have been cheaper to go somewhere else from the beginning.We ended up walking to National Car Rental down the street where we were in and out in less than 15 minutes and very pleased with the service. If we had done National from the beginning it would have cost us an extra $25 instead of $100 and the headache of dealing with Payless.

I booked on Priceline and then read the reviews, which made me dread my decision. I decided to stick it out and was pleasantly surprised in the service and speed of my rental experience. Arrived in Maui around 2 pm and arrived at the Budget/Payless lot about 2:30 pm. Shuttles were waiting to pick up passengers from the terminal and quick turn-arounds led to a long line at the counter, but it was mid-day and about five flights landed in addition to mine.I waited about 20 minutes in line, I was the last in line for my group of shuttle buddies, and the attendant took about 5 minutes to complete the transaction. My wife, son, and I were in the car and gone by 3 pm. I did notice many people having issues; one older gentleman did not have his license, one woman had issues with her credit card, another was hasseling the counter for an upgrade from his economy reservation.All in all, not as terrible as the reviews make it seem. If you travel often, have your affairs in order, and booked the car you wanted, then you will not encounter any issues at Payless. I bumped it down to 4 stars only because the lot attendant stepped out in front of the car about 15 feet from the shack, I almost hit him. He stated he needed to leave room for the shuttles to turn.I will update if returning is a hassle but i dont foresee it. Thanks Payless for NOT living up to these terrible reviews!!!

Waited at the airport for the shuttle to the rental office for 20 minutes in sun, heat & humidity only to arrive at Payless rental office to find over a hundred people (family & children) waiting outside up to 2 hours to get reserved rental cars on Sat July 29, 2017. We were told to wait outside the building and to put your name on a waiting list to be called inside to stand in line. Only one person from each family was allowed inside into the A/C to wait in line the remaining family members had to wait outside although they did allow some elderly and a young nursing mother to come inside to escape the heat. The outside wait was 30 minutes then waited in a line of about 50 other potential renters for another hour & 15 minutes. Then outside to wait for the car to be brought around to finally inspect it. We were told to do our own inspection and complete the form left on the dashboard to document all the scrapes, dents and dings on the car. The agents claimed two flights arriving at the same time caused the delay! I saw no one from our flight waiting with us and talking to others who were waiting had arrived on several different flights. The entire episode from flight arrival at the airport to finally receiving our car was three (3) hours!! What a terrible waste of time to start our vacation on Maui!

Worst ever car rental experience. Did not have the car (or similar) we reserved. Charged us over double what we had reserved. Very rude and not at all helpful. Then to top off the whole experience, when we got home and checked our credit card statement they over charged us!Avoid this place at all costs.

Worst car rental experience ever. Just checked their rating at BBB they have a F with over 600 complaints and counting. You will not payless here they will hit you with all kinds of hidden fees even after we had confirmation from 2 different employees. They do not answer their local phones ever and their corporate headquarters is even worse. Finally got through to a manager Abraham who said he would credit our account and send a confirmation email he did neither. Tried to call today and he would not take my call and the representative hung up on me -so the only recourse now is to try and warn others before they make a terrible mistake and rent through this criminal company. If I could give negative stars I would!!!!!!!!

Payless shuttle guy didnot picked us (maybe he was runninng late for home) at 10:32 PM and when we reached payless rental office at 10:40 PM for our 10:45 PM booking, we found office is closed. I called them many times but got no response. Take my 2 cents dont go for payless here at maui.

This place is the worst! Id have given it a 0 If that was possible. We came to this paradise of an island for the 4th of July weekend (yes, yes I know its a crowded weekend, but youd expect a business to be a little prepared ?) We waited 4 hours to get a car that was pre-reserved. 1hour for a shuttle at the airport(dollar, enterprise,hertz had multiple buses and like 10 customers while budget/payless line to board the shuttle was an hour long). As we got into the shuttle it made sense why we had to wait over an hour - Mismanagement. These were small shuttles that they wouldnt fill up completely, take about 8-9 people each ride (comfort and leg space are good perks. when the line isnt 1000 people long). Then came 3 hour wait at the car-center, where theyd give us tokens as we enter and ask to come back later after our number was called. It wasnt a token call when you get to the counter, mind you, but a token for when wed be eligible to stand in the 1.5hr line. An hour into the token receiving ceremony it was our turn to stand in line. There were 3 people behind the desk and the line was about 80 people (80 distinct customers) long. So that was another 2 hours. No apologies by the staff, just shrugs.

Worse car rental experience I have ever had not only is the wait long they do not pick up any phone calls period. corporate needs to shut this place down as it ruins both budgets and payless reputation. As it stands now I will not rent at either company for a long while just to boycott the offee experience I had at this location. Rude is the number one word I could use to describe this place.

Disgraceful performance 2 and a half hours to pick up a pre booked car. I recieved a ticket to wait in line so when my number was called i could wait in the main queue.I had to wait that long with two little kids (2 and 4) after getting off a plane and no apologies for the wait just told it was always that busy on a friday, if it is always that god damn busy put on more staff.The other people we were travelling with picked up their car from Enterprise and had driven and hour and checked in before we even got to the front of the queue.

This place is ridiculous. I waited over an hour in a line to pick up a car. The place has many counters, but only a couple actually have people working at them. Beware, This is the same company as Budget and Avis. They all use the same counters. Avoid all 3.

Reviews of 2-3 hour wait times are hard to believe but true. At one point there was a waiting list to get into the building due to the low number of agents.Book elsewhere and save yourself the hassle.

Never ever ever rent from this place!! They had 200 people coming in for cars and only had 5 out of 12 wickets open. People waited for 3+ hours to get a car!! Absolutely awful customer service.

We booked online and were told that the insurance was not that good, we should book an additional one - then the only question that remains is why it is offered online. All the Etxra costs push the original price up quite a bit. Although we had given the age when booking, there was no mention of a fee. It wasnt until we were on site that we were told that it was an extra $ 25 per day under 25.

This is the worst car rental.Despite the off-season October evening, there was a long line for check-in. However, there are only two staff members. It took more than an hour to receive.I will never borrow it at Budget.
