Ive had haircuts from multiple barbers here, including the owner, and they always do an awesome job. I initially went to them because I lived down the street, but now I live ~30 minutes away and STILL drive over here for an appointment. Super friendly people and the pricing is fair compared to other places in the neighborhood that show less attention to detail in a haircut.Getting an appointment online is a breeze, but make sure you lock yours in at least a week in advance because they do fill up.

First time and definitely not the last. John was great in his advice.Theyre professionals with years of experience, they make your experience worth while with a very personalized recommendation based on your facial features and head structure.I recommend them, just make sure to call and book your appointment with time. Theres a reason why they make appointments.Theyre just that good!

Looking for a new barber in the area and tried out this place Got my haircut by Cynthia there and asked for a SMALL trim on the top of my hair and by the end, my hair was too short for my liking. I also showed photos of my desired hair at the beginning which was barely looked at. I dont think my request was taken account for unfortunately.

Expected better based on reviews. The haircut I received the first time was ok, the second time I went it was terrible. Cynthia cut my hair and she missed spots and I had to have the haircut touched up by a different barber. I will not be going back.

I LOVE this place-- the haircuts are great, the ambiance is old school barber meets steampunk cool-- (they even have an antique cash register that they actually use)!I took a friend in there to get spruced up, and they made him look fantastic.**Best of all though is the owner AL (who is one of their master barbers), whom i stop by to chat with when Im nearby, just because hes such a warm, friendly guy. This place is a must if you like clean, sharp cuts, and friendly down to earth barbers who love their work.

I have seen Super Cuts trainees do a better job. I got my haircut with Cynthia, who said maybe 10 words, did not cut my hair evenly along the front (I can see the sine wave shape) and could not even be bothered to brush the clumps of hair off my face when finished.Thanks, Ill take my $40 elsewhere lul

The first thing you notice when you walk in this quaint barber shop is charm. The charm just smacks you in the face as it emanates from the brick walls, to the warm light, to the very carefully curated decorations. Unless the barbers are victim to their high degree of focus, you are also always greeted warmly. Ive rarely had to wait to get seated as they are always on time, and when I have waited it has only been for a few minutes. Overall they are professional, punctual, friendly, and make you feel comfortable, which is everything I want from a barber shop. Oh yeah and of course, my hair always looks great when I leave. Al is the man and definitely knows how to run a great barber shop. Big ups to him and the rest of the squad for keeping Jersey City fresh.

I travel a lot and have this routine of cutting my hair in all these places, the haircut I had with Sal was by far a great experience hope to cut here the next time I am in the States. The shop has a really cozy feeling as well which is great during the cold winters.

My point of view - the best barbershop in Jersey City. Barbers here are great and atmosphere is lovely. My barber Alex is very professional and extremely detailed. He spends as much time as needed to do a perfect haircut.

Nice people inside but they don’t listen: I have asked to be cut well on the side and just a bit on the top. The result has been more than half of the measure on the top. I am very disappointed. I showed also pics at the beginning to make it clear but still not enough.Sad to wait months now before the grow again on the top.To answer you: Filippo and I went there around 11 am on Sunday. After hours I am still very unsatisfied. I have been treated well but I mentioned a couple of times to keep my hair long on the top and to adjust them a little bit (and I showed 2 pics as example mentioning again to keep it longer than the pics) and they have been cut so much. At least half of what it was. It is my first bad review ever (sorry for it) but I really don’t like my haircut.

Decided to come here to get a cut once they re-opened. Like most during quarantine, my hair was extremely long and Alex did a masterful job cutting it just the way I liked it. Very clean, and professional. They also check your temperature before cutting for the safety of their customers. Definitely would recommend.

I’ve only been here once so far but I’m already a fan. The whole team appears to be very friendly and hard working and they take social distancing and wearing a mask very seriously. Don’t judge a book by its cover. I was a little nervous when I walked into this barbershop the gentlemen were a little older so I didn’t think they could handle my hair. But let me tell you with age comes experience. Alex cut my hair and I can hands down say it was the best haircut I received in years it was almost like he has been cutting my hair for years and knew exactly how I wanted it cut without even explaining much. I visited for the 1st time today and the reviews are spot on. Jersey City has many barber shops and this place is the first Ive found that can cut my hair (mens medium length) and provide a perfect fade. Prior to my haircut, I watched as customers left and each barber made sure their customers were happy. In addition, the owner sincerely cares about each customers experience. He asked me multiple times throughout the process if I was satisfied. Online booking is a huge bonus as well. This is my new spot.

Before meeting Al, the quaint shop was a hairdresser that never seemed to be open. As soon as Al took over, the entire block of Barrow between Columbus and Newark seemed to be reinvigorated with new life and energy. He turned the spot around overnight and developed a sophisticated barbershop that caters to the much-needed market in-between the extremes of prices offered in the local Jersey City neighborhoods.Since opening, Ive brought my son, from infant to toddler, to hang out practically daily, and watched Balkan Barber grow. Over a couple years, Al added two new chairs and went through a few hair stylist professionals, all of whom dedicated their time to stay up-to-date with cutting techniques and education in their trade. With each friendly stylist having their own methods and styles, the Balkan Barbers (Al and, as of this review, Alex, Reza, Desiree) have earned my trust to cut my hair anytime.And while Ive seen some crazy situations at barbershops over the years, the other day, Ive recently experienced probably the most impressive thing I will ever see, EVER.I was in Als chair getting cleaned and a fly the size of pea started flying right between myself and mirror... Al mumbles something about fly and quickly snaps his forward. The fly seemed to bounce in midair and I realized that Al actually hit the fly and managed to snip off the wing and practically cut the fly in half! Ive only seen that done in the Karate Kid... my barber is officially Mr. Miyagi!

I did not go, but my brother went and didnt stop talking about how fantastic the place was. From what he stated, they do not take walk-in requests usually, but they were able to sneak my brother in. It was one of the best haircuts I have ever gotten. Those guys were phenomenal.

After searching for a new barber in there Jersey City area, I could not be happier about finding this place. Their service is excellent and Riza has given me quality cuts. I like being able to schedule your appointment on their website. It is a bit pricey, but it is it worth it for the quality of the service.

Recently switched my barber to Balkan and i have not been disappointed. I am usually skeptical about changing barbers frequently but I got haircut with Al here and loved it. I have been there multiple times now and will definitely go back. Al wont let you leave the shop until you are satisfied with their service. Lovely guys, great service. I started getting my hair cut by Al a few months ago when my barber of 10+ years had to take a leave of absence due to medical reasons. For anyone who has had the same barber for that long they understand how difficult it is to find a new barber. A few buddies recommended Al and let me tell you, I have gotten the best haircuts of my life. I am not an easy customer to accommodate. Every time I go in I have a different way I want my hair cut, whether that be from the length of the top to how high I want my skin fade to go. And Al, ever the professional has the conversation with me and gives his honest opinion and I am beyond satisfied with every haircut. He is a true professional in every sense of the word and a master using both the scissors and clippers. This is not to mention the environment of the shop, which is extremely welcoming. On one occasion my pregnant wife tagged along and not only did all of the barbers congratulate her and I but the other patrons did as well. This barbershop has the feel of an old time neighborhood shop in the sense that everyone is super friendly and welcoming. This was my honest review of a shop that I really enjoy being a customer of, an extremely talented barber, and an all around decent guy!

I really enjoyed my experience at Balkan! Cynthia is amazing and even though I felt as if she was a bit rushed by her coworkers she kept steady and still maintained her efficiency and gave me an amazing haircut. They dont rush through a hair cut and have been consistently great at giving a haircut. I usually go for Al. The shop itself is very pristine and the staff is friendly. Highly recommend it.

Al and the gang are truly top notch and wonderful people through and through. Coming out of the stay at home order here in NJ, the last time I had cut my hair was in early February, and my hair was longer compared to where it normally is (~4 on top and 3 inches on the sides). My barber of 10+ years had closed unfortunately in Jan as the owner of the building sold to a new Buyer, so I was looking for a new barber.I did alot of research on the boards, between Yelp and Google (and the Jersey City subreddit, ha). After going through, I decided on Balkan because it seemed to have universally positive reviews and was just a train stop away from JSQ where I lived. I booked an appointment for Thursday the 9th at 2pm and walked in thinking Id have to wait 15-30 minutes like at other shops. Instead, I was brought in within 1 minute of arrival.The barbershop is a really unpretentious and modern shop. Its got a clean air conditioned feel, with the brick interior giving it that intimate touch. Alex and Reza (the two other barbers) and Al had such a great rapport. They were off on a Starbucks run and the three were joshing one another out the door. The minute I walked in Al greeted me amicably and asked me how I liked to cut my hair. I showed him 2 pictures (front and side view) of my normal classic tapered side part and he immediately understood. Within 20 minutes he cut down my mop head down to a very professional and clean side part. I was personally blown away.Al blew away every one of my expectations. It was a truly wonderful experience for me. Hes a virtuoso and a perfectionist when it comes to hair. As the haircut progressed, he always took 10 seconds to ensure that we were going in the right direction. He was also a very pleasant conversation with a love of life and a positive attitude which is much needed during these trying times. Im very happy Ive found a professional who I can return to in the coming months (and hopefully years) for my haircuts. For anyone who was in my position, or for anyone who is looking for a high quality haircut, I would give my full endorsement to Balkan. Thank you, Al!

Super cool, quaint, clean barbershop right in Historical Downtown JC. Brand new as of 2018. Al the owner/barber is incredible. The guy is one of the most dedicated business owners Ive ever met. Called in as soon as they opened to book an appointment. The woman asked if I could do 1:30 and I told her that was too late and asked if they had anything earlier so she told me 12:30. I got there at 12:30 and sat there for 35 minutes while three people went ahead of me before I just left. Seems like they just double book appointments and got backed up. I wouldve appreciated them just telling me that they were fully booked and I couldve gone elsewhere and not wasted my time.

Went yesterday to get a haircut and Riza did a very nice job . When I went home it was a bit different than Id hope . The skin fade was too subtle for my liking. Went back today and asked if he would change it and he did do at no cost and Im very happy with the service! Would recommend .

Just a great barber shop in every aspect. I was in JC for 6 weeks and I went specifically for Desiree every other week while I was there. She even squeezed me in 3 hours before my flight. Anytime Im going to be in JC Ill be making sure I stop in to get my haircut. Truly a remarkable barber shop.

Once I moved back to Jersey City, I couldnt find a barber that could cut my hair the same way my old barber in California could do it. Then I found Al and his shop and now I have a consistent barber that cuts my hair the same way each time.
