Had to go with another closer shelter. I was willing to take a 6 plus hour drive there and back, but there is a Serious lack of communication through messenger, email and phone. The voicemail box is always full. I was told they was going to call me today after filling out my application, days ago. They kept sending me applications when i had already filled them out, had to fill out 3. Messaged them back to see when theyll be availble on messenger andmessage seen, but no response for a week and unable to answer calls i understand you guys are volunteering and good job on taking in these beloved animals, but. Communication HAS to be better. when im able to see when the other person seen my message and you dont respond for days is just confusing to me.
Ive been volunteering here on the weekends for a couple of months now. While there isnt much that I can do, I really enjoy the opportunity to help out the animals, and the people there. Its mostly just getting to walk the dogs, and play with them. Its a large space with a lot of dogs of various sizes in kennels of various sizes. The dogs undergoing treatment are kept in a separate room, inside kennels. When you need to talk to someone there, you will have to step outside because the dogs will see you and bark at you to get your attention. Im sure theyre all looking for a home where theyll feel loved and appreciated. If anyone reading this wants to go volunteer, try calling. If they dont answer, you could go there to talk to someone about what time work for you and the shelter. And do let them know a day or two in advance if youre going, helps keep them some tasks out for you. Also, there are lots of dogs there. Please be dont expect it to smell like flowers. Its an animal shelter, not a rose garden.
You cant even see the animals without an appointment I dont get it isnt the goal to get them homes people are obviously there and able to help you made no sense
These people were so very nice! They were there to help when we needed it. Our family member had a situation where they needed to re-home a dog with special medical challenges and Animal Rescue Fund of MS was willing to assist without hesitation. They gave their word that their animals dont just go to any old home either, but they have great adoption standards. If you have to re-home an animal or want to adopt one, you can count on these folks to have the animals best interest at heart! Thank yall so very much!!!
Wonderful staff who truly looks out for what’s best for all the animals that come through their doors. They can tell you the background and stories of every single animal! Would highly recommend.

Great shelter who goes above and beyond to help rescue, rehab and find good homes for dogs in need in the Jackson area. They really care about these animals and do a great job. Love these folks!
Love the friendly and helpful people here and how well cared for all their animals are! My daughter has volunteered here before and she is so in love with everything about ARF! I couldn’t ask for a better shelter in my local area!
Very helpful, very polite, definitely would recommend for any pet that you can no longer take care of.
This is best rescue in Mississippi. They are always willing to help out. The employees, owner, and volunteers are the most responsive people I’ve met.
This place is amazing! No one loves animals more than ARF. They are well cared for and the people are wonderful. If you are looking to adopt a fur baby I highly recommend going to see the great folks over at ARF! You wont be disappointed.
I found a great dog on petfinder, but after calling and emailing to no avail, I decided to visit the dog during my lunch break. I just left this place, and I have to say... I was shocked and disturbed at what I saw. From the street, there is no visible signage that the building was a dog rescue, however if there is any doubt, you can always follow your nose. Prepare yourself for the smell when you exit the car. The thick smell of pets smacks you in the face. The yard and parking lot was unkempt, the grass was overgrown, cages were scattered about, and it looked like a hoarder lived there. There are about ten cages in the lobby, which is full of other random office supplies, there is nowhere for you to sit. The smell is even stronger inside and the harsh ammonia vapors make your eyes water. There is a hole in the tattered ceiling. I could literally see the sky from the lobby. Workers were walking the dogs through the front lobby and said nothing to me while I waited for someone to come to the front desk(no one ever did). I didnt even walk into the back for fear of throwing up from the smells. This seems like a place where pets are just brought in and put in cages, but who knows. Either way, I feel terrible for any animal that would have to be trapped in a place like this. Perhaps they should reduce their numbers so they would have resources to improve conditions. I would encourage anyone reading this to go find a pet there, because the animals living there need a rescue from this rescue. Also, I am not being dramatic when I talk about the smell, for those used to sanitary environs, this will be overwhelming. Bring a cloth and some essential oils to cover your face and mask the smell.
They are great volunteers at this rescue. They take so much care with the animals. Love them!!!
They did a great job with my Snuggles! Highly recommend them.
Amazing organization that utilizes all resources in an effort to save animal lives! Selfless staff and beautiful animals!
I came to adopt a dog and was immediately turned away because I do not have a fenced in yard even though I have 165 acres of land. A dog wound have plenty of space to play and would have been trained to stay near my house but that does not matter to them. The animals were all in small cages that they did not fit in and the place was filthy. If they want to be that strict about their adoptions, they should have a better environment for their animals at the shelter.
These people truly put their heart and soul into saving animals!
Great staff. Best no kill shelter in the state.
Adopting a senior dog requires a lot of knowledge, and this place is full of people with good information and hearts. Pippa is so kind and loved my girl, Merry, and I could tell! I am able to call anytime to ask anything I need to know.
Something stinks here. How can you say you adopt out dogs. They hoard dogs for years when some of them could have had a good home. They would rather keep the dogs for years in steel cages in the heat like they are in prison than them have a good home. Something is going own here behind the scenes.
Please help these lonely, abandoned, animals,, if we can help,, try
Horrible. Went and volunteered and wanted to foster before getting one. Still waiting to hear back from them a month later. They had to come inspect my house before I could foster their dogs. I have my own dogs and love them more than anything. What an insult. They have dogs there since Katrina. What kind of life is that for a dog? And I am not good enough to keep one or foster one until it gets a better home or see if it gets along with mine before keeping it. Ridiculous. these people really need help.
I just visited arf. The website clearly states that they were open. Upon entering the building you are overwhelmed by the stink of animals. Yes I understand it is a shelter but even a shelter can be clean! Upon walking by some of the kennels I see animals leaving in their own filth!!! Once reaching the office a lady ask me to step outside cause you can’t hear in the building due to all the animals they have inside. Once stepping outside I am flooded with questions about why I’m looking for a dog what kind of dog I’m looking for and if I have pets of my own. Once letting the woman know I just rescued a dog whom is pregnant I get hit with why didn’t you get her fixed! I just rescued the dog how can I get something fixed that I just rescued! The woman was extremely rude with her tone and her questions! I understand wanting to make sure that the animals get adopted out to the right people but when you shoo people away before even letting them decide if they want to adopt is crazy! Especially with the care and environment that these poor things are living in! As an animal enthusiast I am appalled by the care of the animals and the demeanor of the people whom work here!!! I believe arf should be shut down so these animals can have a better life!
We adopted a dog from this rescue about 3 years ago. We were told the dog had been in their care for 2 years, since she was about 8 weeks old. They even told us where they found her and her back story. Then when we took her to the vet it just happened to be the same vet they took her to. The vet said she had a litter of puppies and they knew her. Even knew her name and this vet delivered her puppies. One of the vet techs even had taken in one of her puppies and she showed us a photo and the dog looked like her twin. So somehow this dog was allowed to get pregnant at the rescue shelter. When I mentioned it to one of the ladies at the rescue in a fb message I was blocked. This place is also extremely dirty and smelly. The dogs live there for years. They are not active in seeking homes for the animals and they obviously don’t even prevent them from getting pregnant or impregnating another dog in their care. I can’t believe how picky they are about adopting either, almost any home would be better for a dog than living in this place. In fact, when we came to see our dog we saw a chow laying in a kennel barely conscious. The dog looked like it could die any minute. Just a sad, sad place. This place should be shut down.
I usually dont write reviews but I had to about this facility. I had a mixed breed pitbull that I could no longer care for because I work two jobs and barely had time for her. She was not allowed to stay in the apartment complex I live in so I had to make a tough decision to give her up. I wasnt having luck with finding her a home so I began to search for a shelter for her before I knew exactly what goes on behind the scenes at these shelters. I called this particular shelter because it was close to me and was open at the time I was available to have her dropped off. I called this facility to get information about their process of taking in dogs and what they do to them once theyre in their care. The lady that answered the phone showed NO compassion towards my situation. I explained to her why I was surrendering my pup and her dry response to me was Well, we cant take her in because we are completely full. If you cannot afford to feed her or provide medications, we can try to assist you with that but if you are surrendering your dog, you will need to contact MARL, and since your pup is mixed with pitbull, I can tell you now they will kill her before you even get out of the parking lot. I just told her thank you and hung up. She said is so nonchalantly and was not empathetic at all. But Im glad she informed me of this because I almost surrendered her to MARL but when I pulled into their parking lot, I sat there for awhile and I just didnt get a good vibe from their facility so I left with my pup. Thankfully, I was able to find a nice home for my pup. I say all this to say please be careful and get as much information as you can about these dog shelters. I wasnt too knowledgeable of their procedures but I would say if you have no other choice but to surrender your dog, please make sure you surrender him/her to a NO KILL shelter.
Terrible place for anything, they should be ashamed of themselves, its a horrible location!
Worker was condescending and rude. Let two aggressive dogs theyre sheltering get close enough to nearly fight. Instead of pulling the dogs away, they just stood there watching. Do not come here.
Some friends and I recently had an opportunity to volunteer at ARF, and Im so glad I did! The employees were very friendly, taking the time to introduce themselves and talk to us about the animals and the shelter. I was also very happy to see how kind they were to the animals. They were gentle and took the time to talk to and pet them. The building is somewhat rundown, it does smell, and things are a bit of a mess, but considering how many animals they take care of on a daily basis I expected nothing less.I usually dont leave reviews, but I really wanted to take a moment to support ARF. The work that they are doing warms my heart, and I hope to have an opportunity to return someday soon.
Worst experience ever !!!! Owner is very rude and she purposely took my dog while I was emotional and will not give him back ... I will never see my baby again and the owner has no sympathy for the situation ! I would not recommend this place to anyone !
After one of my two Rottweilers passed away late in 2018, I began my search for another adult Rottweiler. After an exhaustive search, I narrowed my possible choices to 3 dogs....I contacted the 3 rescue organizations, and representatives of Animal Rescue Fund of MS immediately called me back. Elizabeth answered all of my questions concerning Selena, and I promptly filled out their Application. As promised, they contacted the Veterinarian who treats my dogs, and confirmed the information that I provided. Days later, I arrived onsite, and met with Elizabeth, and Selena. Selena was brought in as a Stray, and had been at ARFMS for over 2 years. I also brought my German Rottie Rocco along for the meet and greet, in order to insure that they would get along. It was obvious that Selena had been well cared for, as she was precocious, clean, and engaging. After the 1/2 hour play date concluded, I brought Selena home with us. I am happy to report that Selena [now Lucy lol] is a fantastic dog. She is very friendly to everyone, and has adapted to her new home and to Rocco. In my past experience with Rottweilers and other large breed dogs, [including being a past volunteer at a Rottweiler Rescue up in Illinois], I am unfortunately aware that on some occasions, dogs residing long term in some rescues become depressed, and introverted, especially if the staff at the rescue does not have the funds and/or man-power to walk the dogs often, and otherwise engage with each dog individually. It is clear that Lucy was well taken care of during her 2 year stay at ARFMS. She is a very happy dog, and very much enjoys her new home. If it were not for ARFMS and other no-kill rescues, Lucy, along with many thousands of other great dogs, would have been needlessly put down, due to lack of space and availability, and funding necessary to care for these dogs. On behalf of Lucy and myself, I wish to specifically thank Elizabeth, along with her staff of volunteer caretakers and dog-walkers, for all of the work that they do.
Rude!!!!! Condescending man at the front was a complete jerk. Im not unintelligent and have always had happy healthy dogs. Man told me not to let the dog sniff my hand before I petted him, then went into a tangent about how people are dog ignorant. The shelter itself was disgusting and dogs had feces on them.
ARF is the worst animal shelter Ive ever seen. Urine and feces are sprayed out of occupied cages that drain to a trench between your feet, the metal roof leaks, and animals who have been there for several years have mange and open sores. I had an employee tell me not to adopt a dog because he was going to die of heart worms. Later, the executive director, Elizabeth told me the dog was currently being treated for heart worms and the dog had been in the shelter for several years, meaning he had been left untreated if ever for years. Things just didnt add up to me. Dont be fooled by the overwhelmingly positive reviews on other sites, this place can barely be considered a shelter.
The lil old white lady Races as hell I couldn’t even get out my car y’all need new workers and management !! Hate I experience that there when I only live 2 blocks away
Horrible, Called to see if they had any German Shepards they said they had a litter I told the lady on the phone me and my wife were on our way she said she was excited to have us adopt one. As we pulled up we noticed them all outside in a pen and we found the lady we talked to and she very rudely said they were all adopted already after telling us she had plenty of them for us to look at.
Terrible. The place was disgusting, dogs were everywhere, and the people were rude. We left right away.
A wonderful animal shelter, working in a state with lax animal abuse laws and no semblance of spay/neuter policies. The bad reviews here are just from people who were rejected by ARFs strict adoption requirements and a PETA supporter who wants to see all companion animals euthanized. ARFs facebook page is overwhelmed with positive reviews and people who have successfully found their furry companion animals due to the endless work done by the board of directors and staff. If you want to foster, you should! You should also expect ARF to do a minimum of requiring references and a house check. Dog fighters and animal abusers routinely try to pull animals out of shelters. Without basic checks, ARF would have no way of knowing if your home is safe or if you leave antifreeze containers lying around the yard.Likewise, if you say youre just going to let the dog run free on your property then you can expect to be denied. Dogs have no understanding of property lines. This is how dogs get shot by hunters and neighbors or attacked by wildlife. If you have a callous disregard for the life of the adopted animal, then dont expect ARF to willingly hand one over to you.Its a good thing that ARF cares enough about the animals in its care to have these rules. Animal shelters arent pretty. They arent happy. Its depressing that so many animals end up in shelters all across America. Want to help, sign up to foster, adopt or volunteer.
We adopted our pup from here. They really care about the animals and want to ensure they all go to a good home.
Excellent
Customer service was terrible. Was extremely rude and not understanding of my situation not being able to pay hundreds of dollars to have my dog treated. Also left me a very rude voicemail calling me a horrible person because I cant afford the vet. I have proof too.
They really care for these animals. They really need donations & volunteers.
Awesome service
Caretakers were short and rude.
Spay and neuter, everyone, spay and neuter.
