My home was damaged by a fire on 1/2/18, a claim was filed on 1/3/18 with Auto Owners Insurance Co, and has yet to be resolved. Because my contractor unsuccessfully attempted to reach an agreed cost and scope of repairs from Jan to Jul of 2018, he decided not to complete my repairs. During those seven months, Auto Owners averaged 2-4 weeks to respond to the contractor, delaying my claim settlement. Compounding the fire, mold was discovered in 8/18. A claim with Auto Owners was denied after almost 3 months for a decision, further delaying the settlement. Before the mold, was found, Auto Owners informed me they were going to pay for my Additional Living Expenses (ALE) until 10/31/18. While investigating the mold, I negotiated an extension until 11/30/18. Although Auto Owners knew they did not give a final determination until the end of Oct and no contractor would begin any work on my home until that determination, they maintained that they were not covering my temporary housing and storage of my contents beyond 11/30/18. Their cited a reasonable amount of time to complete the repairs had passed and they do not owe for more than the 3-4 months that was estimated to repair my home. There is approximately $40,000.00 in ALE remaining coverage available to me and their awareness that my home was not going to be in a livable condition with only one month from the time they give their mold determination and any construction could begin to their arbitrary 11/30/18 ending date of coverage. In 10/18, I hired Spartan Claims to help me resolve my issues of the disagreement on the scope of repairs and costs, the incredible delays for Auto Owners to respond, and their denial of my ALE, which has left me effectively homeless. Spartan is experiencing the same delays. My public adjuster has called the Auto Owners adjuster several times to discuss this claim. She has only responded to phone communication one time. He emailed her a copy of his $40,000 damage increase estimate on 12/5/18 and did not receive a response until 1/14/19, two hours after he demanded a response. He emailed her again for explanations of items she says she will not pay on 1/22/19, as of 2/8/19, she has not responded. My new contractor will not start repairs on my home until there is an agreed reasonable cost and scope of repairs. Further, Auto Owners wouldnt renew my homeowners policy that expired 11/16/18, forcing me to purchase a high risk policy, because the house is vacant and in disrepair, that costs me an additional $600+ per month, a 43% increase on my mortgage payment as well as having to purchase renters insurance for my items not in the house. For 13 months I have had to worry about where I am going to live, the maintenance of my home and storage my possessions until the repairs can be completed. I am having to reside with a friend because I cannot afford to pay for temp housing and associated costs (utilities) and pay my mortgage, utility payments and upkeep of my vacant home, as well as storage for my clothes, furniture and living contents that I had in the apartment. Auto Owners has now informed the companies that are storing my home contents that they are not going to pay them for any additional storage, I am now being asked for a delivery date or to pay out of pocket for storage. I cannot afford to pay for additional storage and have no choice but have my clean contents brought to my smoke odor, soot and dis repaired home that would be moved around during the repairs. I believe that I am being unfairly treated by the unscrupulous business practices of Auto Owners and not sure if forcing me to take an unfair settlement of my claim for repairs to my home by denying my coverage for additional living expenses and not renewing my homeowner’s policy is legal or fits the policies of the Indiana Insurance industry or even their own policies. I would like Auto Owners to reach an agreed scope and cost of repairs immediately and continue my ALE coverage until the repairs on my home are complete and I can go home.
Had a horrific accident 500 miles from home where we were hit by another driver on a major highway. We called our agency, Kindell Insurance and Leandra did an outstanding job answering questions, getting us a rental car & putting us in touch with our Auto Owners (AO) Insurance. Debbie Ramirez from AO was in touch with us right away helping us resolve issues and settling our auto claim within the next week. Truly outstanding response and follow up for us during a very difficult time!
