Back in May of 2021 we were looking into adopting a a friend for our furbaby. We sought interest into Phineas because he looked like a huge baby with lots of life in him so we were able to schedule a play date with Phineas and our dog and they got along perfectly. We had chosen Phineas to be our new family member but we didn’t think the worst would of happened. Our dog got territorial and would fight Phineas. We had given Phineas back and worked with our dog more and researched all that we could to be able to have him back and a month later Phineas was still at the shelter. They were open to giving us a second chance with Phineas and to this day I appreciate Heather and everyone else whose lees this happen! Phineas has been a handful but hes the best addition that we didn’t even know we needed! this place is the best and i appreciate all that they do!

Animal shelter. A sad place, but a beautiful place of opportunity, also!! The people here have hearts of gold, and STRIVE to do a GREAT JOB in the face of a constant torrent of animals incoming. Ive read the other reviews, and tbh, on the bad ones, I cannot see where they are coming from, ... in my experience, there is simply *NO* basis for them!!! In multiple instances, my experiences with the staff here has been that, in every case, the staff here has been willing to go WAY out of their way to assist with a problem, even bending over backwards to help, in any way they can. To the hard-working Unsung Heroes who work here, *I* SALUTE YOU, and say, THANK YOU!! I would give twelve stars if I could!!

Be very careful that you are given correct information before an adoption. We had important known behavior issues withheld by a staff member in effort to get a dog adopted. Sadly we had to return a dog due to aggressive incidents that we were not equipped to handle. The acting manager we spoke with during the return refused to take any responsibility despite the fact that information was intentionally withheld from us, which should have voided the adoption contract. I cannot speak for the facility as a whole but our experience was not positive.

We were looking to adopt another dog to be friends with our current one. We took her to the shelter with us to meet one. The people there were very nice and helpful. When it became obvious that the dog we went to meet was not a good fit, they came up with a couple other dogs for us to meet. You can tell they care about the animals there and want what is best for them. We did go home that day with a lovable, fun guy and are enjoying him very much.

The last two times Ive taken my cat up there and they had to do surgery, they have put her under then shaved her they took chunks of skin off with the clippers and shaved a couple her teets off . They use to be really good but not so much now they lost my trust and they are not personable anymore the doctors used to talk with you but now your lucky if you see them.

Tried to do the right thing for a neighbor who found stray dogs and take the here and the head lady was acting like a Gestapo Officer about it. She followed me out to my vehicle without my express permission and pretexted that she had some kind of police-like authority and continued to harangue me about the poor animals. . This is both illegal and uncalled for when someone is trying to do a good Samaritan act. Then she admits they are full to capacity and insisted on knowing the address where the dogs stay. All of this while pretexting as to have police-like authority. Her shirt stated Staff not Police nor Animal Services. Be on the lookout for this power tripper and if you can adopt your dogs out I get the feeling they are going to put innocent dogs down due to overcrowding.

I have an abandoned cat that comes to visit. When it became obvious the owners had stopped caring for him I called these people. I explained in 3 different phone calls he was not a feral cat. They told me they had no room but they could alter him. That was fine. Easier to find him a home hopefully. He is an unusually beautiful cat with tufted ears. When I picked him up that day saw that they had taken half his ear instead of making a small notch. They listed him as feral on his sheet when he is very sweet and loves people. I will never gonto these people or recommend them.

They dont answer the phone and only help the public by appointment only. Theyre there to violate pet owners and hijack dogs sent off to be bread over and over before put down. They also look really pathetic accepting donations but not actually providing any service to the public. I cant say enough great things about the Independence Animal Services and the caring and compassionate people who work there!! If you are looking for a place that needs donations keep them in mind. They actually have a list of things that are necessary and needed to help care for animals that are there.

Absolutely useless.Heres how the conversation went:Me - Hi, my name is Scott Hoover. Im calling about a stray in my neighborhood which is fighting with my animals.Them - Is it a cat or a dog?- A cat.- We dont come out for cats.- ...- But you can try and catch it yourself.- Let me get this straight, there is a stray coming onto my property, damaging my property, and injuring my animals, and you wont do anything about it?- Oh...well... whats your information?*I provide all my info as well as a description of the stray*- Ok, great. Well, we dont come out for cats. I dont even know how we would catch one. *laughs*...how do you work for ANIMAL CONTROL and you dont even know how to catch an animal?! Absolutely useless. They need to fire those there and hire some people who know what theyre doing.

How about reinforce the dogs owner who let their dog run around unleashed on their unfenced front yard and backyard and we were walking her dog ran towards my dog and I and barking like crazy. Then the owner will say take your dog to the side of the road! And got angry! What? Are you kidding me! I am walking with my leashed dog on a public road woman.Cmon! Wheres the leash law in Independence City? There are people out there walking in the park with unleashed dogs. It terrified me all the time when I am walking in the neighborhood.Seriously, Animal Control officer - I have a suggestion for you. Reinforce the neighborhood around Davis Park. Especially the house in 200 N Arlington. I dont want to file a formal complaint now, I will give her a chance. I would really appreciate it if I dont see her unleashed dog in her unfenced yards when I am walking with my leashed dog. Thank you!

A kitten showed up under a neighbors car, then went up into engine. They carefully removed it and we took it here. Even though not acepting cats nor was an intake day, the caring staff did not turn it away. She was severly dehydrated, skin &bones, only about 4 months old, but was not feral. They couldnt say if she would make, but at least she could have a chance now. When left was going to give her fluids, etc. We were really impressed by them. Thank you.

After calling 6+ times I finally get an answer. We have a pregnant raccoon in our driveway and it hasn’t left in days. Animal control claims they do not remove raccoons unless they are hurt or dead. She said and I quote “we don’t just pick up random animals, it will move on by itself” this is ridiculous. This pregnant animal is at risk because of the cats and dogs in our neighborhood, but they refuse to do anything unless it’s hurt or dead. Awsome...

I am told that a dangerous dog that is a neighbors dog is only a nuisance IF it comes over into my yard! I explained that I’m trying to be proactive to prevent a problem. Nothing is going to be done with a dog that charges the fence when I walk outside onto my patio. This happens every time I go outside. I don’t understand how the city assumes no liability UNTIL someone gets hurt or worse? I am putting the city on notice here and now. I have informed animal control that the neighbors dog is aggressive and potentially dangerous and will be jumping the 3 1/2 ft fence eventually. It is a Bull Mastiff puppy about 6 months old and already 80 lbs. My family and pets should not be put at risk or violated on my property before action is taken. Very irresponsible on the City of Independence to take no action.

Would give no stars if possible. From recent reviews they have not improved over the past 15 years. The people work hard but are understaffed and under equipped to serve an area of this size. Being super thin they are limited on what they can do. Also the city and the shelter dont work together to serve the area. The officers try to work with the staff there but are often left frustrated.

Just got told by the independence Police Department the animal control does not respond to dogs running loose, so what are you supposed to do then? Just let the dog run loose and wait till it gets hit by a car? Before anyone asks there are no tags or collar on the dog its obviously got home now because its nice and fat.

Noncaring for sure.My son had run in with my cat 6 months ago, my son has multiple mental health issues. Laura from Animal control was there and embellished the truth and left out info. Judge always believes the government side of it. Now I have to get rid of my cat which is bonded just to me in 48 hours. I cooperated with these people and essentially gave them the string to hang me. I had nothing to do with the situation other than be a witness. My cat is my emotional support as i have my own problems and take care of 2 other disabled people. Idk why im being punished. He has not had any incidents with any animals since they changed his meds. My hearts breaking.
