Coming to this dojo was one of the best decisions my family has made. My boys had been in karate for a few years. We were going to another school in Blue Springs and started having some unpleasant experiences. My oldest son, who had loved karate and had been really dedicated, began to feel defeated and asked to quit.I found Longs website and emailed Sensei Long some questions. He was incredibly responsive and welcoming and he told us to come in and try some classes. My son was scared and sure it wouldnt be better but it was amazing. Sensei Long takes a personal interest in each student and family, making a point to talk to each of us frequently. He makes a great environment for children, making them each feel welcome. One of my sons stopped taking classes at our old school and hes only sporadically interested here but Sensei Long talks to him frequently and always asks about him by name.Financially, this school is a much better value than where we were going which we paid for each child each class. Here we pay a flat, monthly fee and they can take as many classes as they want. They also have aikido and judo/jujitsu classes among others so they get a variety of martial arts training. Also, Sensei Long himself teaches the karate classes which impressed me a lot. Other places have students, frequently with much lower belt ranks teaching. I feel like thats another way we get our moneys worth here.I honestly cannot say enough good things about Longs Shotokan or Sensei Long and his other instructors and the impact on our family. I fully expect to be here for years to come.

I’ve been going there my whole life and everytime I’ve come back I learn a new life skill that most schools don’t teach. They teach the simple “yes sir, no sir, yes mam, and no mam.” They offer many types of programs that anyone can benefit from. I strongly recommend. The only thing I see wrong with this is they only allow 5 stars and not 7.

My boys have been going here for 7 years. My oldest started when he was 4 and my middle son when he was around 4 so 5 years. They are in the black belt club meaning they do judo, aikido, weapons, kick boxing, sparring, and karate. My boys are testing for black and brown belt this week. I will also be taking my 2 year old son there at 3 or 4. Mark Long does a wonderful job with my kids. They learn more than just self defense. Miguel and David Stringer are also wonderful teachers. I would recommend coming in for a free lesson. My boys have done baseball, t ball, soccer, wrestling, and do basketball and football. Of all the sports this is one of my favorites.

First review I have ever written about any company online good or bad. I dont feel compelled to either hurt or advertise someones business publicly. After reading some of the reviews here I felt compelled to post our familys experience at Longs Karate. My family has been attending Longs Karate for quite some time now. I have two grade school aged children currently enrolled in the Master Club. Both of my children have benefited from Longs Karate far more than I could have ever imagined. Coming from martial arts when I was younger, I value the life lessons that are taught and the manners that are taught along side the martial arts training.Thank you Sensei Long for all you do and I look forward to the rest of my children attending your Dojo for years to come.

I have been going to Longs karate for 17 years. My son and daughter also used to attend. I have stayed with it because I truly enjoy going. I love the learning and the friendship, the family atmosphere. As with any sport you always have your family that thinks they are more important than anyone else and get upset when their children are not treated like the dojo revolves around them. So they get upset and leave the dojo, then they leave bad reviews because they are just that upset that the dojo didnt revolve around themIve seen these types of familys come and go over the years. Yet they cannot destroy the real atmosphere at the dojo. If you want to learn great martial arts and stay in shape and work hard and over the years earn each of your belt ranks, because nothing is just given away. You work hard for them. This is the dojo for you. They have lots of classes offered and many different times slots are available. Even on the weekend. I feel like a part of a family there and highly recommend it to all young and old. Lots of good tournaments to attend also. My family and I have been to Ireland also Portugal and many different states. Lots of opportunities and learning and lots of fun. I have been a part of it for 17 years and plan to be for many more years to come, and highly recommend it to all!

I have taken every adult class available at Longs Shotokan (aikido, karate, judo, kickboxing, team karate, sport karate sparring) and after 5 years of being a member of this dojo, I had to finally walk away from the drama. There are so many inconsistencies and double standards at play there that it is impossible to keep track of. The schedule changes at least twice a year and the most recent schedule change cut classes down to 30 minutes, half of which is spent listening to sermon-like lectures and not even working out.You will be told that you have to meet certain requirements to be eligible to test for the next belt rank. I have witnessed countless tests where the student didnt know their belt material or kata and were still handed their belt at the end of the test. I think the phrase Im looking for is belt factory. This was the only dojo I had ever trained at so I honestly was just rolling with the blows because I didnt know any better. I came across an article by a well known karateka entitled 93 signs that your dojo is a McDojo. Longs Shotokan checks at least 70/93 and really opened my eyes. But through all of that, the most sickening part of attending Longs Shotokan was submitting my family to years of underhand racism. I cannot count the number of times that Sensei mark Long made racist comments. I kept brushing it off but you can only brush off so much before you have to call it quits. And when I decided to call it quits, he decided to question my citizenship- when he knew damn well that I am American (remind you I have been a member of his dojo for 5 years). What a shame. He even once told my wife that if you dont agree with me, get out and never come back. Thats proof that you are not welcome if you dont agree with his ideologies. You can go and make decisions for yourself, but this is my familys experience and we are done. And since leaving the dojo we have received multiple messages from his other black belts saying that they had similar experiences and had to distance themselves from it too.
