I must start by saying they have some absolute angels working at their facility. We recently fostered a kitten from BARC, and they made the entire process extremely easy and painless. They even provided veterinary medical services to our kitten when he got sick, and helped him fully recover from his illnesses. Thanks again for everything y’all do for the Houston area and our four legged companions.
Excellent critter care. Great follow up. Very reasonable adoption fees. One stop shop for your new family member.
I went to the cat section. They had a small selection of very friendly little ones. Not very many adults when I was there The staff was very friendly and super helpful and made the process much easier. They also have rooms where you can interact with the animals as well.
We adopted our English Bulldog here! She’s awesome and the shelter is great too! Adoption fee is very reasonable, we adopted our dog for $5. They care about the animals. 🐩
Very clean! Very few cats to choose from, but that is good.
Ive visited plenty of animal shelters. This is by far the biggest Ive ever seen. The first building is where you go to submit paperwork after youve chosen your furever friend, the second building is (more or less) full grown doggos (most of them pure bred-ish: at least they were when we went to visit); the third building is bigger than the previous one and houses puppies and smaller doggos, who usually have longer waiting lists; the fourth building is cats and kittens; and the fifth building is by far the biggest building and houses the rest of the doggos. We went here 3 years ago to adopt a maltese mix but she had already been adopted 10 minutes before we got there. While looking at others furry friends, my husband came upon a beautiful, but forlorn looking husky who had a cone on his head (he had just gotten fixed). They looked at each other, and it was love at first sight. The doggo was well kept (so were all others, as far as we could see), and we ended up adopting him. He turned out to be a pure-bred husky, and he is the derpiest, sweetest, cuddliest, and most AGGRESSIVELY FRIENDLY dogs we have. BARC had also microchipped him, and the microchip service is free of cost. He is currently eating ice from the freezer as I write this.Visit BARC if you can. Please Adopt, dont shop.
I foster for this shelter a lot and they really care about the animals and where they end up. They give me everything I need to be a great foster mom including supplies, food, support and anything else they have available as well as answers to the many questions I had when I first started out. I always recommend BARC to anyone who is looking for a pet and hope to be able to continue helping them help more animals!
I wish I could save every kitty in need, but these wonderful people actually do. Today was the second time Ive brought in a stray that had fallen ill near where I live. They were happy to help her in a way that Im simply not equipped to... Thanks to this wonderful place, that beautiful baby will have the best chance at a long, heathy and happy life.Thank you BARC!!!
I check the site every few days. I fill our the quick asking for a very small very young dog. Why bother with the quiz. There were NO small dogs. Im disabled, live in an efficiency apartment.I cant adopt a dog over 45 #. Im exasperated!!!
I went to BARC on 05/02/2021 without an appointment because I was told by a representative on the phone that in-person adoptions had resumed and I could just drive there to see the dog I was interested in. When I got there, that wasn’t the case. An appointment was needed. Luckily, the security guard at the door had an availability for an appointment within 5 minutes. We had a dog that we wanted to look at prior to getting there. We checked in and they handed us a map where the dog would be at. When we got the the place where he was at, they had a tech that was cleaning the kennels. He was able to get the dog out for us and took us to the play yard to interact with him. Unfortunately, the dog we wanted continued to growl at our small kids when they would try to touch him. Since he was a stray, they didn’t have much info on him, which was totally fine. After that interaction, he called over a girl, I wish I knew her name, because she was extremely helpful. We told her what we were looking for and she walked with us in different parts of the shelter looking for the perfect dog. She knew a lot about the dogs that were there and she helped get them all out for us. Finally, we got to the very front of the shelter. It was our last stop before we would just have to come back another day when they had more dogs. We found the sweetest girl there. She is a 3 year old lab mix named Abigail. They did let us know her owner surrendered her and she was positive for heart worms. We talked to the vet before we could take her home and had to buy the 6 month heart worm treatment pills. Everyone was so nice at BARC and their facility is very clean! They even sent a follow up email and I was able to speak to one of the adoption coordinators after when I had additional questions.
Was not happy that my dog(penny) had to be quarantine. The two young ladles that walked me and my son through the whole process they were very helpful and made me feel at ease. They were very nice and knowledgeable about their job, thank yah very much
What a great place. Come and foster a cat or dog, they will love you and you will feel joy from providing a loving home. Staff is all friendly and very helpful
They really have their system down in terms of getting or find an animal to adopt, or turning in strays. Excellent and very nice workers as well. A great experience highly recommend it.
PLEASE READ if you are thinking about adopting from here!!! I had an absolutely terrible experience and I will be listing each issue I had and explaining what was wrong. Long story short: you will waste your time and money driving to the shelter to ONLY have a zoom meeting with an animal before adopting it. Want to meet the animal? Pay the adoption fee and sign the contract!COMMUNICATION: The first and most important issues is the sheer lack of communication of what you are getting yourself into. The website does not provide anywhere near enough information to determine if appointments are needed, how the adoption process works, and even if the facility is open. With this in mind, I called the number listed. Imagine my surprise when it was the Houston 311 information line! I was eventually transferred to a BARC representative who failed to introduce herself as an actual representative and not just another 311 line operator. The interaction was rude, but tolerable since I was under the impression I was receiving valid information. I was told to go to the shelter, see the instructions, and have the pet IDs ready for the animals I would like to MEET.WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS: To move forward in the process I first had to DRIVE to the shelter, be greeted by a security guard with a sheet of paper (see attached image), then fill out an online survey which asks for the IDs of the animals you would like to HAVE A ZOOM MEETING with. Keep in mind that for some of these animals, you have only ever seen a picture of the TOP of their ears. In almost no pictures posted are you able to see their full body from multiple angles, let alone any pictures that would help determine actual age, health, growth potential, etc. To make assessing the animals even more confusing, the website does not actually list the weight of the animal. As any previous pet-owner would know, weight and age are a very good indicator of health. Instead, they list a size, which seems to be the result of picking small, medium, large, or extra large through a random word generator.MEETING YOUR ANIMAL: Let me reiterate that you will NOT meet the animal in person before adopting and paying for them. You will be asked to have a zoom meeting in your car on your tiny smartphone screen to try and evaluate an animals entire personality and health. You will not be able to see the animals living conditions since you cannot go into the shelter, so there is no way to determine if these animals are being taken care of or completely abused before adopting your living, breathing creature. Reminder: When calling for information, I was told that I would meet the animals through curbside adoption. It would have taken one extra second to clarify that it was a ZOOM MEETING.PRE-ADOPTION HOLDS: The dogs I was looking at were both on pre-adoption holds which meant they were strays that might have an owner who can come to the shelter and claim them. HOWEVER, you can adopt and pay for the animal without taking them home and possibly have them be reclaimed by the owner. You will then be given a CREDIT to adopt another animal and NOT a refund.SAFETY: Finally, as someone who has previously adopted dogs through a shelter, I am very familiar with the shock an animal can experience when being moved into a completely new environment. I have previously raised large dogs, including a rescue who had severe behavioral issues that required careful accommodations and training. How safe could it possibly be to take an animal from unknown conditions in the shelter and immediately stick it in a confined space that happens to be occupied by completely new people and, oh yeah, this confined space is your car that you will soon be driving 60+ mph on the highway. We already have enough car accidents in Houston. Why add a nervous animal to the mix?
Beautiful facility. Saw lots of animals. Great place to find a furry friend.
It has been a year since I have adopted my furever friend! ❤️ And I can honestly say our experience with BARC has been amazing. The staff was friendly and very helpful. Coming to this place was the best decision I had ever made, this year has been amazing and full of fun because of this puppy! 😍 I really sincerely recommend adopting a dog from here! 😁👍
We adopted Champ, now known as BIG Boy.He was High Positive for Heartworms. Friends of Barc agreed to cover the expense for his treatment. We are now halfway through the 30 day as little as possible movement no excitement period after the treatment. So far so good. We pray everyday that he will make it. Hes an absolutely wonderful sweet boy. BARC is a wonderful facility to adopt from. Heartworms dont have to be a death sentence. Give the monthly preventative. Give the dogs a chance to become a part of your family. We did.
DO NOT COME HEREIf I could sue this place I would. My dog got neutered here and not even a week later he had kennel cough even tho they said they gave him vaccines for it.Came to a different vet just for them to tell me this is the third case there seen exactly like this just this week.
Overall not bad. Staff shortage is a problem obviously. Lot of long walks to various buildings.
We just brought home our fur baby today. Our precious 12 year old baby girl passed a month ago from lymphoma. Her fur brother(along with us) has been devastated. We decided to visit BARC. Our first trip was a disaster. We were devastated by our loss and left hysterically crying. Our second trip was better, but our pick was not to be found...we found out she was in the hospital. We came home and returned the next day....we ended up adopting Cocoa. She is 5 years old and is heartworm positive. (We have instruction and will see she gets her care as directed by BARC). We picked her up today as she was spayed this morning. Our Jojo loves her and I will say she loves him..they continually kiss each other on the face. Im sitting on my lounge chair right now with both of them. This is our first shelter dog(most of the time they run up in our yard and become ours. OR, people we know give us their huge dogs when they get too big for them. This is the smallest pup we have owned...she is just too cute and sweet.....BARC is a wonderful facility, very clean, caring, and helpful. I will return if needed. Thank you for helping make our home complete again. Everyone is so very happy. Michele and Brad🧡🧡🧡🧡
A young woman at BARC told me they would take my 3 eleven week old kittens, and that I would get their Id #s so I could track them getting adopted. However, the reality was the worst case scenario. When I arrived, 2 women told me I needed an appointment to drop them off, but took them anyway. Then a young woman told me theyre older, common looking kittens, and people want younger kittens. I offered to pay the required $35 per kitten to get them adopted, but I wasnt charged. The young woman said they cant keep them long because of diseases, etc, so I realized I was giving them up to be euthanized. I was heartbroken. I wouldnt have gone to BARC if the woman on the phone had told me the truth.
I had never been here, however; my 1st time experience here was absolutely great. I came here to get my foster neutered and i was very impressed with how they keep Covid-19 safety protocols, they are also very organized in how they process appointment and punctuality. They went through every single instruction for post op instructions, even though they handed me everything on paper, i was asked if i had any questions before leaving and were very careful and attentive to how they handled my foster at pick up. I didnt even have to get off my vehicle. I loved the experience, they made it really easy for both me and my foster. Communication was splendid, they emailed me right away the 1st time I enquired about adoption and gave me all the instructions to follow. I will definitely recommend this place for adoption or spay/neuter of your pets.
I love how they take care of the animals. Even though some of them might seem upset, but when they are actually introduced to people they will light up the day.
Very dissapointed with this place. Firstly, whoever I was on the phone with sounded extremely bored and like I was a nuisance to her. I understand shelters are probably busy with the current circumstances but isnt this your job? Anyway, I called about a stray kitten running around a busy parking lot and was told they dont pick up cats? So whats the point of animal control then?? The lady said Id have to catch the kitten myself and then set up an appointment to bring her over.. how ridiculous. I guess thats why there are so many stray cats around Houston, the city doesnt care about them
I adopted Sofie on September 27, 2017. My experience at BARC, for the very little time I was there, was beyond compare. All of the staff that I met were truly awesome people. The facility is beautiful and very, VERY clean. All of the pets looked like they were very well taken care of.Thank you, BARC, for making my first adoption a great one! Sofie is loving life and already spoiled rotten! ❤
They never answer calls and you have to live within the Houston Area to even return them if it ended up not being a match. They didnt tell us that before we had adopted them. There seems to also be no way to contact them since they dont answer the phone. Then there seems to be no email to reach them.
Wonderful staff. Attentive kind and professional.
We got my beautiful baby Skye from here. Shes currently 13 weeks and in training to be my service dog. BARC is huge! It took me a few hours to look at all of the dogs. They are pretty cleanly, especially when dealing with so many animals. When its busy it can be pretty hard to find staff/volunteers. I really liked the ticket system they use for adoptions. I really wish the clinic would use this too! They use an electronic system that changes and is really odd, so I wish they would use the simple paper ticket system. Also, I want to clarify: Ive seen some posts on here saying that BARC has claimed to be a no-kill shelter. That is simply not true! They are a kill shelter, but they try really hard to get their dogs adopted out! You should adopt here knowing that. They really care about their animals. I specifically adopted from a kill shelter because I wanted to make room so that another dog who otherwise might not have had a chance at being adopted would get their chance and/or a longer one.I hope this helped! Thank you for your time.
I had a great experience adopting our new kitty from this shelter. There was a great selection of animals, and the staff was friendly and helpful. The curbside experience went smoothly. It takes a little while because everything is done pretty much remotely while you wait in the parking lot, but please be patient as the staff are working hard and adjusting to the new processes as well to keep everyone including the fur babies safe. I will definitely come back should we adopt again!
We adopted or dog from one of their mobile events and could not recommend it more. It was a Halloween event and they had all of the dogs in costumes. We adopted or dog for $75 with neutering included.Back to the shelter itself. Not the best location but the prices are great. The vet techs are extremely friendly and answer all of my questions. The prices are much less than our regular vet with the same medications. Highly recommend.
We adopted a black kitten.. nice employees
Really nice, it was clean and the employees was really cool, respectful and professional to me and my wife even when she was not.
The good:- Shelter facilities were clean and upkept- Staff/volunteers were all friendly and seemed to care about the animals- Sick dogs are only $5 to adopt AND come with their medicine, which is a wonderful incentive to get them adopted and cared for personally- Even though they were busy, the shelter vet was able to quickly consult with us- I loved their TNR colony and the kitties wandering about. I do think there probably needs to be more signage explaining the TNR cats though. The mediocre/bad:- I couldn’t find a good number for the facility, just animal control. I probably could have gotten transferred, but I didn’t feel like dealing with that and would have appreciated a direct contact- I emailed the facility about the dog were were interested in and they took 24 hours to get back to me- definitely not a big deal, but I would have been pretty heartbroken if he’d been euthanized and we were too late.- I don’t know if this is even possible, but we had our 5YO with us, and several of the dogs were obviously child aggressive. If I didn’t know better- and some people might not- something bad could have happened if she’d put her fingers through the kennels or we’d tried to take the dog out. I feel like having a small child should warrant some kind of special supervision or even a special handout for the adults to read over about how to recognize warning signs between dogs and kids.Tip:- If you’re visiting the facility and approaching it from the south side, do not go over the bridge. No matter what Google tells you, there is not a way to go under the bridge from the north side. Take the side/access road, UNDER the bridge._________________The Description:We went to BARC last weekend, after seeing a picture of a 6mo old dog on Pet Harbor. It’s a nice, well maintained facility- very large. The dogs at the front, in the newer section, seem to be the ones most likely to be adopted. After asking a volunteer, we found out the pup we were interested in had an upper respiratory infection and was in the back kennels (sick area). We walked through a couple more rooms of pups and then went to meet the canine we were there for.The staff/volunteers were very helpful and walked us all to an isolated area outside to play and meet each other. We were given plenty of time, and when I expressed concerns about any issues with cat aggression (the only reason we’d return the dog would be for child or cat aggression), we were told about fostering with the intent to adopt (which we ultimately decided against). The adoption was a bit complicated but was handled pretty well. As he was sick and we hadn’t spoken to our vet yet, we had to see the shelter’s vet. The clinic was open and so the waiting area was very crowded, but they squeezed us in within 10 minutes. After speaking to the vet, we went back to the front building and paid the fee, then had to drive to the other side of the facility to pick the dog up. Once there, the staff/volunteers hadn’t received word yet that we were coming to get him, but once we explained everything, got his medicine and him, and brought him out to us. The entire process was probably some 30-45 minutes long. We’re coming up on week 3 of having our Jellybean now and his doggy cold has cleared up and he’s a very good boy. He came to us fully vetted, neutered, and with medicine to treat his cold- we just need to take him to our vet for heartworm prevention now. I did have to deworm him (tapeworms) but thats easy OTC stuff.
Animal shelters can be sad places, but this is really one of the best. I volunteered here and fostered many kittens and they really do everything they can to save as many animals as possible. They have goals they work on every month and work with local rescues and fosters to save them all! If you can sign up to volunteer and bathe some puppies or socialize some kittens!!
Love this place. Fostered a 5 week old resuce dog from there, a Lab Mix. Reign is now a part of our family. Lots of loving pet who need care. They took care of all her shots and boosters, even did the surgery. After the surgery, went to pay for the final adoption, to our surprised it was only $5 (normally $75)! They have specials and discounts all the time, I advise checking the website to see which day the specials are. Cons: Can be packed on weekends, far from home, Clinic can be closed at odd hours. Pros: We got a very loving dog and awesome new family member for relatively cheap. Over all great experience though.
I called BARC early in the morning last Saturday because I was interested in adopting Jasmine, a beautiful red heeler dog. I was told to drive to the shelter to meet Jasmine. I drove from Cypress to BARC (40 minutes approx) and almost had a car accident because of the rain (lost control of my car). Once at the shelter, I was told to wait for a long time to learn later Jasmine was with her foster mom. Four days later, after filling out forms and exchanging emails, her foster mom (a very nice person) told me Jasmine was gone. Somebody else adopted her. In my hands, I have the collar I bought with her name, leash, food, bed, and toys. My particular interest in Jasmine was because she looks exactly like a family dog we lost a few years ago whom we loved so much. The experience has been nothing but horrible. I was never told I was on the waiting list for Jasmine. Knowing I was Plan B, I wouldnt have bought all her things. Im very sad.
Very helpful people and caring ...
The best place to get or take animals
They treat the animals nicely. Service is fast and straightforward. I have adopted 2 adorable healthy kitty cats and will come back if I want to adopt more.
BARC provides an invaluable and humane service to Houston residents. Unfotunately, my neighborhood is a literally a breeding ground for stray dogs and cats. I especially like their TNR (trap, neuter and release) program. My daughter is actively involved with rescuing abandoned dogs. She speaks highly of the Sisyphean work done by BARC.We can all help by ensuring we spay or neuter our pets. There are several low cost clinics available to Houston residents.
Place was well kept. Didnt have any dogs under 30lbs but staff was friendly and dogs seemed cared for.
Very clean facilities, easy adoption I found my puppy here!
You don’t know what happens when those doors are closed! They don’t keep you updated! I watched them hold a malnourished dog with only ropes tied around his face and his waist! Some people do things for the wrong reasons. A vet should be caring! A vet should be gentle. A vet should save lives not treat them like they are nothing! I see my dog as my child and if I ever saw someone carrying my child like that someone would be in jail.
I volunteered at this shelter last Spring and it was wonderful. It is located in a part of town I have never been in, surrounded by warehouses and empty factories. This is not a plus! We even got lost trying to get there. Volunteers are able to get the sick and stray dogs out their cages and walk them around the parking lots. The cats are kept is a room away from the dogs and you can watch them jump around and play with them. I walked maybe 2 or 3 dogs but sadly did not get bathe any. I gave them lots of hugs! The cages have labels with information that anyone who comes into the shelter can know all about this particular dog. I recall feeding them bacon Begging Strips which they gobbled up. None of my dogs liked the organic Blue Buffalo meat.My negative thing is that I wish this was a no-kill shelter, but the truth is that if they are not adopted in time or have rabies/diseases BARC will kill them. This should be motivation to come out and adopt these unwanted pets!
They are tasked with an incredibly difficult job and they do it admirably. Adopt, dont shop!
From my personal experience it was satisfactory, officer Scott was helpful and informative to my every question regarding my pets during pick up and before taking taking him home.
I had a great experience. My son found his companion
Service was great and people are nice. But once you surrender your dog you have no idea what is going on with the animal and they cant give you any information at all on the person that adopted your animal.
Ive been to Barc on several occasions. My first time, I went looking for a dog. The facilities are impressively clean and the staff is friendly and helpful. I didnt find the one on this occasion though. The second time, I went to deliver a stray that I had found and taken care of for a few days. I tracked the dogs progress in the shelter online and saw that it had been adopted about a week after being placed in the shelter. My third time I finally met my dream dog! Kleo is the dog pictured - shes a Border Collie Australian Shepherd mix, and she is extremely affectionate, gentle, and calm. She fits right in with my little family and is well natured toward our other rescue dog, Ziggy. Unfortunately, she had heartworms when we adopted her. Barc let us know about her heartworms and gave us very specific instructions about how we should go forward with treatment. The Friends of Barc program is paying for her vet bills (at Barc) until shes healthy. Im so happy with my experience here and am now taking Ziggy to the vet at Barc as well. I recommend Barc for anyone who wants a new companion.
Was looking for a lost pet and staff was friendly and helpful! Kennels were exceptionally clean!
I love this place. Got my first pet from here and now my second. Got a beautiful and gentle lab/german shepard this past weekend. Go adopt!
Taking all covid precautions. The guy who tended to us was amazing! Had to surrender a wounded cat we found & he put us both at ease by informing us on their procedures. BARC has our support (we were turned away by humane society & SPCA)
I adopted my dog during their $1 adoption event and she is the cutest and sweetest dog. BARCs Wellness Clinic is busy but very affordable for medications and shots. Lots of really beautiful dogs get surrendered here because people have a new baby, people move, people dont have time, or sadly their owner may have passed. I encourage people to rescue these poor innocent and confused creatures who sadly sit day after day and wonder when their owner will return to get them.
Great place to get your dogs shots at a great price
Very friendly staff.Well kept Facility.
The employees you are really sweet took their time with us and helped us a lot I will recommend bark for everyone
Everybody friendly... clean place for dogs n cats.
Im a volunteer and the staff is truly caring towards the animals.
We got there for appt early. Good thing we did people waiting there and plus due to covid 19 we had to wait. The staff very nice and informative. Keep up the good work. 👍
Great facility. Im so glad this place exist. I found a stray and was able to get a heart worm test, all vaccinations, microchip, and heart worm prevention for less than $150. This service is greatly appreciated. I may adopt a dog next. the vet that I saw was also very helpful. I had a list of questions and concerns and she went through each of the concerns that I listed. Since I am a first time dog owner, the courteousness of the vet and the helpful tips that I receive from the other patrons really added to a great experience. Thank you BARC animal shelter and adoptions for your help with my dog.
Came here for the donation food drive and was treated with kindness! Very organized and efficient! Thank you for your generosity.
My baby girl was adopted from here. She has been with us only for 2 weeks but she has improved a lot. She was under medication for a skin condition, had kennel cough and did not have her vaccines completed yet. So I have been going to their wellness center to take care of it every week. The amount paid is minimum, usually $18 per treatment.I wanted to adopt from Barc because they are a no kill shelter.Thank you BARC for all you do for stray dogs. And for rescuing my puppy from the streets.
We adopted a Maltese mix ( named him Thanos 😂). He is the best dog ever! On Wednesdays the prices are very reasonable if you dont necessarily want a puppy. This place has a wide variety of animals just waiting for a home. Seeing as how they spay/neuter the animals and give them rabies shots too, you cant go wrong.
Great service, my dog was very scared. Got the job done, thank you!
Foster care volunteersDo not communicate well they set up in the zoom appointment and will notAttend the zoom meetingPoor communication
Great place Left with a new friend 🐕🐶
I had a laughable experience with the Rabies Bite Case Unit. As a victim of a dog bite you would hope for a sense of urgency and concern, especially when very aggressive dogs are on the loose and could easily hurt other citizens. Instead my case was treated in a nonchalant manner with poor communication, and nothing resolved. Though one officer was very helpful, their search radius to find the dogs is limited to the street in which the bite happened, which is a joke considering dogs can obviously travel distances. The lady in the office handling cases was uncommunicative and left me in the dark with any updates, If I wanted any info I was the one calling and even still didnt tell me accurate information. They are the mall cop version of city authority and like any City run office, dont care.
Ive adopted two cats from here and fostered many other cats and dogs. Adopt dont shop, people!
This my second time going first time the puppies I wanted both had issues the second time they didn’t know wher the puppy was gave me the run around it was hot in there by the time I found the right spot the couple in front of me adopted the puppy I wanted waist of time and gas will not go there again that was on the other side of town another blank trip
This place murders digs when theres space remaining. I would NEVER EVER take a dog to BARC - its a death sentence
Sad day for my fiance, we had to surrender her dong.. We miss him. The staff were very respectful and handled all the dogs there with love and care.
I took my dog in Today for a bite case exam, the ladies in the front were so nice and understanding. Michelle gave me a lot of information and was very sweet . I highly recommend BARC if y’all looking to adopt or take your dog/cat for shots or grooming, & they have other stuff they can help you with .-julie
Very kind and helpful. Second time Ive been will likely visit a 3rd
