Seems to be a great place, their hearts are in the right place and they really care about the situation that some of the homeless find themselves in. Clean facilities caring staff and both shelters have medical clinics right on sight A+ in my book for that being an exfirefighter & Emt I like seeing something like this.

This place is heaven to a homeless man. Three meals a day served every day of the year. Awesome thrift store on the corner and a nice shopping plaza across the street. Not far to movie theater, and walking distance of many several other destinations. Truely a gift, a blessing for all. Be carefull when you are looking for heart, because you are looking right at it here!

They kick you, babies, pregnant women, elders, the disabled and children out at 6am in the morning everyday and dont let you back inside until 630 pm. Nothing is open that early and most people hang out the filthy entrance until it opens back up for night entry. There is no computer lab or resources to help you get out of your situation. They do not let you charge your phone or laptop upstairs in the dorm which makes no sense on how are we supposed to go online to look for housing. Infested with bed bugs. If you have no choice but to stay here buy tea tree or eucalyptus oil and put it all over your body so you wont get bit. I felt trapped in there. It feels like prison. I could not sleep because staff walks up and down the halls with flashlights and keys making noise. Doors opening and closing all night long and then they kick you out at 6am. Most people in there have mental issues and if you stay there long enough youll begin to feel like you are losing your mind too. I do appreciate having a roof over my head I stayed there for three days with my two children who got bit by bed bugs. If you believe in energy and paranormal stuff stay away from here. The energy that roams the old building is very negative and if you have to stay here try to ignore it for your own protection. I heard voices the first night I stayed there and Ive been sober for almost a year. The negative energy in there is an accumulation of years of insane peoples energy and that negative vibe welcomes you to feel trapped in there. Dont give in to that energy. Keep your frequency high and positive so it cannot penetrate your field. The bed bugs will never go away because a lot of the people who stay there are too mental to shower. They do keep the temperature cool inside in the dorms. I must say that if you are an addict do not come here you will get lost in the neighborhood ways. If you have to stay here I repeat do not relapse! stay strong and be your own proactive advocate. Get yourself out of there ASAP.

I thought they were helping the homeless. But they definitely, pick and choose who they want to help. And if you rub them the wrong way, they dont do anything for you. Ive been there for 2 1/2 years and Im still in transitional hell. Why, I have no idea. Wrong race! Job insurance in a way. Someone is getting rich off the claim of helping homeless!!

Awesome institution that helps the homeless. Cut thru all the red tape for someone I know to get a plane ticket back to his family in the midwest. And they paid half! If you donate here I believe 83% of it goes to actually help the homeless and 17% for administrative costs.

Ive been there a few time for appointments and I always see more and more improvements to the building and area. Its hard when people have no where to go once you get up and eat and clean up. You need to leave the sleeping area and there isnt much to do so what looks bad are certain nationalities in hords just hand out in the front of the building and most have very young children. Maybe IHS can have some volunteers ask the people if they would like to take their children to the park where its safer to ride their bikes and scooters. I dont understand why they wont go out and find something positive to do instead of just sitting there day after day. Its such a sad sight to see. Especially for the children.

But I was accepted even though I was gone from there for 6 days and then I called and was accepted just that quick, with no judge. Tell me what, Thats love. Also can be a job. Love your neighbor as yourself. Thanks IHS. Ooh, didnt mention any names, but you know me from being there, and I am especially thankful for Cindy, administrator, Connie, for an awesome Walker or rollater, And I love Singer, she was there for me too. Went to IHS completely broken. Was introduced to Mrs Lolly as my case worker and the journey began. The journey to get my life back and grow up! Told her I give up and where do I start? We took that journey together with the help of outhers, cooks, security, classes ECT.Get SOBER and stay that way was a mandatory, hell 55 and still useing! I had to grow up! Get a job. And learn to use my sobriety and past as a way of being honest and not tripping on the past coming up.Today Im sober, volunteer at IHS. On my 3ed year of housing 1st! Thanks to sand Island and Gracies guidelines.God IHS and my job saved my life and it will save yours if you let it!Mahalo Nui IHS!

I believe IHS is doing a great service for the community by providing emergency housing for men, women, and children. However, the key word is emergency shelter. This is not intended to be a long-term living situation.IHS provides three meals a day for the guests and the community-at-large. Be prepared for simple meals, with white rice as the standard for lunch and dinner. They frequently serve meatballs, canned stew, and chili, all with white rice. However, when the alternative is hunger, anything is good. Most of the time there are seconds. There are a significant number of mentally ill guests with schizophrenia, delusional disorders, OCD. You can expect to hear the C word, the B word and the F word yelled at guests by other guests frequently.Staff does their best to keep the environment controlled. Some do it better than others. The shelter director seldom makes an appearance. She stays up in her office. There are standouts: Kaleka, Ivalani, Brianna, Joanne, Kala, Desi, and Raynelle. You can count on them to help you out and do the fair/nice/kind thing. Others do not enforce the rules, play favorites, and shut people down without listening.Often, hospitals discharge patients and send them by cab to IHS, even when there are no beds available. Best thing to do is call ahead and get on the waiting list if you think you might end up homeless. Then, call every day to see if you have cleared the waiting list. There is a program fee. It is $100 dollars a month for single women who are Hawaii residents. It jumps to $400.00 for non-residents. If you have no income, you can get a waiver and work off your program fee.BEDBUGS! THEY ARE IN THE WALLS, SO IHS NEEDS TO FUMIGATE THE ENTIRE BUILDING, DEEP CLEAN THE DORMS, AND SEAL UP ALL THE CRACKS IN THE WALLS AND BASEBOARDS. You are NOT allowed to spray anything to combat them, because some guests have breathing difficulty and this causes health problems. However, you can use essential oils like Peppermint, Tea Tree Oil, White Floral on your bed frame. Diamotaceous earth can be sprinkled around your bed.You are allowed 1 suitcase and 2 milk bins that are kept locked up in the cage, and 1/2 locker that must have a padlock. This is not much to store your things, so be wise about what you bring. With IHS, you take the good with the bad. Ignore gossip, do not give away money or cigarettes, and decide who the guests are that you want to converse with. New people can be exploited by shelter-savvy homeless folks, so just say no.There used to be extended rest pass in the mornings so you could sleep until you had to be out at 11:25 a.m. It required a doctors note. The rules have recently changed and now everyone can stay in the dorm until late morning. No more getting out of the dorm by 6:25 a.m.!Seldom do you have to spend the whole day outside and that is usually due to staff training. It is a place where you are usually safe, have a roof over your head, a bed to sleep in, and three meals a day. In that respect, it is a blessing.

I took a gamble and moved to Hawaii for work, which quickly dried up. It was IHS or the sidewalk within a short matter of time.IHS took me in, 3 meals a day and treated me with respect for the 2 weeks I was there. They paid for half of my ticket home as well.Anyone saying they were rude was prob disrespectful themselves. These people will give you back what you put in.I did hear some bedbug stories but didnt see any, they seem to have been addressed. The one major issue was the bathrooms. Very unclean. So much in fact, I didnt shower the entire time i was there... beach showers ftw!My overall experience was humbling. I learned a lot wouldnt trade that memory. Many thanks to IHS!

Sick nasty environment that is infested with bed bugs the stuff know about the infestation of the bed bugs and refuse to do anything about it. Also almost everyone living in the shelter have staff infectionso because of the filth. Staff has awful attitudes towards the people who stay there. They withhold information on resources as well as often verbally abuse the people living there. This place needs to be reported to the health department
