There is one manage in particular who starts giving 5 minute warnings that the gym is closing 20 minutes before closing. I’ve seen plenty of people try and correct her, but she ignores them. at or even sometimes before 9:50, she tells you to leave. I get that you want to go home but people are paying to work out here and for some people that last hour is the only time that works for them. I’d be happy to change this review if they stop doing this or change the listed hours.

Not a bad gym for the price, but what can stand out is how aloof/standoffish the desk staff usually is with checking in and out, and when 5 minutes warnings are given with 20 or more minutes left prior to the gym closing. The desk staff often isnt paying attention when you come to the desk to check in/out, and on the flip side Ive been yelled at for walking by after I had to simply go back in to get an item that I forgot at a machine (after I already checked out 30 seconds prior). I also get that the staff wants to head out for the night, but if the closing hour of the gym is 10:00pm, 5 minute warnings should be given at 9:55pm.

Was not issued my refund after canceling 3 days into the 10-day trial period because I canceled online.I went into this gym for the single-day free trial and after my workout I was pulled aside by the manager to discuss plan options. I made it clear I was still looking at other gyms in the area, and was told that there was a 10 day cancelation period with a money-back guarantee. The manager persuaded me to give my card details as I could cancel for a full refund within that period. He felt pushy.Three days later (7 days left in my trial) I canceled my membership as I felt the cost to value of this gym was not worth it. Considering the cost, the equipment was in poor condition and the staff was not very friendly. I received a phone call from the gym manager confirming my cancelation that same day, and he asked for further feedback/comments.After a few weeks I still hadnt received a refund, but I gave it time as I saw other reviews mention the shoddy accounting going on here. However, after two full months of waiting I decided to give them a call. The worker who answered the phone confirmed my refund was not issued, and said his manager would call me back in an hour. I never received a phone call, so I called back. The same worker as before told me I got an email from the manager. And insisted that he was just relaying the message from management. The email reads as follows:Hello ZackYour cancellation was submitted by you onlineTherefore it was cancelled by the end of the month with no further chargesIn good healthNicholas Kemelmacher | Sales ManagerThis is absolutely ridiculous. The manager of this gym called me on the same day that I canceled, which was well within my trial period. Originally I had told the manager not to worry about me leaving a bad review, and that I just wanted to cancel as the value didnt add up for me. But he knew that I had canceled, and chose to hold onto my money anyway.I hope that keeping my $52 for two days of lifting is worth me bad-mouthing your gym and NYSC to anyone and everyone I see in Hoboken. In good healthZack

Personal Training Experience— Writing here to review, thank and recommend Aris Martinez, a personal trainer at the Hoboken North club. I have completed 20 or so sessions to date and have had success with my goals with him. He is a good person, personable and hard working. I have had experience with trainers previously who would end a session in 45/50 minutes (after having started late) but Aris gives you attention the full hour+. He goes the extra mile to help and even tracks the effort each session on an ipad (maybe it is a regular with every trainer, not sure). I’ve been lazy and never looked forward to any gym session in the past 5/6 years, but Aris has been flexible, dedicated, determined, helps you realize you have potential, changes workouts to ones you like and this has helped me change my attitude towards my workouts (hard to change the fact I am lazy though!). He works hard when I want to hardly work and says I can when I say I can’t and I appreciate that. I have a long way to go, but I know I will get there with this kind of support. Thank you Aris.To note.. The NYSC (other locations, probably a corporate issue) has given me a tough time in the past with excess billings after cancellations, threats etc. like the reviews here for their own weird ways and I hope and trust that won’t happen this time, at this club. I will reserve the 5star review for the Training experience.

I provided written cancellation notices and it didnt matter. I got a manager on the phone (after never ending calls) and they told me theyd cancel - then didnt and it wasnt in their system notes either when I called 2 months later. The gym itself is fine, its what youd expect. I filled out a form in mid-February and was told someone would contact me the next day. No one did, so I called a week later and was fed the line the manager isnt in right now but Ill leave your name and number so she can call you as soon as shes in. No one ever called me back; lo and behold on the 1st of this month they charged me for another month. Called today and I get the same a manager isnt in so Im just going to dispute it with my credit card company since they clearly will just keep telling me this so they can charge me more money every month. My experiences with the staff have all been good. Only negative is the occasional anti-social member, and the fact that a decent number of people just dump dirty towels wherever they please. I love this gym because it’s clean and the front desk people are nice; but I do not appreciate the trainers that stare while people work out. Ruins the whole experience. Some of them do absolutely nothing except give members the side eye and are extremely judgmental about others around them. Very cliquey and condescending. Let me tell you something, you may be fit but you are in no way superior to those around you just because you know a little more about fitness. The trainers who are personable and kind are the ones who seem to get the most clients - these people are lovely and helpful. The unapproachable jerks seem to be getting fewer clients and spending most of the time staring at others...and themselves. I suggest that you drop your ego the way you drop your damn weights: HARD and FAST.Other than that, the staff is nice and the locker room is clean. The cleaning staff are sweet and should be acknowledged more in my opinion.Rant over.

UPDATE: I was contacted by management, was told I’d be refunded as I was charged again when I shouldn’t have been, and it’s about a month later and I have not received any refund. When I thought I was moving out of Hoboken, I tried to cancel my membership and was continually lied to and unable to cancel. I wound up staying in Hoboken but there is no way I am rejoining. This is the email I sent to the manager regarding my inability to cancel my membership. It details all the trouble I had to go through. After the below e-mail was sent on 8/9, my membership was finally cancelled.Hi,I’ve already been into the gym in person three times to try to cancel. The first time (7/31) I was told you have no cancellation forms and that they were being delivered in two days. I left my name and number in a booklet so you would know I was there and could put the cancellation date as 7/31.Two days later I came in and was told that “you don’t do cancellation forms anymore.” I informed (name removed) that I know you do because I was in two days ago and was told that’s how I cancel. He then proceeded to pretend that he forgot that was how people cancel, and gave me a form (that same day, as he knew exactly where they could be found). We both signed the form on 8/2. He told me you would be in on Monday (8/5).I came back today and was told that my membership hasn’t been cancelled. You’ve already taken my cancellation form out of the binder which is “supposed to mean it’s cancelled.” I filled out another cancellation form today to make sure you have it when you come in. I was told you only come in every other Saturday, and that tomorrow is your off day. When I came in on 8/2, I was told the same thing. Why am I being lied to every time I come in and why has my membership not been cancelled? Please respond to my email as soon as possible and call me when my membership is cancelled.

When speaking with the manager Ala, she had informed me that I would not be charged again and the maximum amount that could be reimbursed is $150. I recently joined this gym, even begging my friend who lives out of town to join. The variety of equipment was the selling point despite being pretty crowded at almost every time of the day. I was working out by myself & look up to see a trainer no less then 3 feet from me laughing & staring at me as he was supposedly training his client. At one point his client, who had his back to me, actually turned to look directly at me!! I couldnt believe this happened. I felt so awkward & uncomfortable I could barely finish my workout. I come to the gym expecting it to be a positive place of self growth. I am a personal trainer myself & love to see people working out & improving their lives. I came in the next day & spoke to an assistant manager. Nothing has been done, no phone call back to me & no acknowledgment other then I havent heard anything bad about this trainer. Needless to say this is not the kind of place I want to work out at let alone pay for a membership. If you enjoy unpleasant experiences like this one then this is the place for you.

Wish I had read the reviews. HORRIBLE when it comes to membership cancellations and I am one of the many affected just read the reviews. I cancelled a membership in July, therefore I was told I would have to pay the following month and then a cancellation fee of $10. Did not happen. First they lost my cancellation paper because this place does not even do them in person but has you fill out a paper that they never read. I was overcharged into OCTOBER, and lucky for me the membership price had risen since September so I got a nice charge to my checkings account with a new membership price. I called over the summer so many times I assumed it had been settled, called in September the manager will never speak on the phone. I had to actually go in person in October have the receptionist print out my account with all the notes on the membership and write a personal letter to the manager. She responded via email to try to get me to stay in the gym and reconsider...then went on to never refund me for the money owed and charged my card the cancellation fee. I found out this weekend that my gym membership cost increased; when I called NYSC on Sunday, I was told an email was sent out about a month ago outlining these changes, but I advised I never received any email outlining these changes to membership fees; I was told to speak to the Membership Manager on Monday. I called her today, and she indicated that an email was sent, and I advised I never received said email--she offered to reduce my monthly payment to what they were before (which indicates to me, by the way, that these new fees may not be that necessary, otherwise why would NYSC offer so quickly to return my membership fee to what it was before), and I said I would rather just cancel my membership because I was never notified properly that the fees would be increasing. I also mentioned that, if I was given proper notice of the changes to fees, I would have cancelled enough in advance so that i would not be charged the new fees, but that obviously did not happen and as such I was not given the chance to cancel my membership. The membership manager said she would forward me the email that they apparently sent previously outlining the upcoming membership fee changes, but its been three hours since our phone conversation and I have not received any email.I also asked whether I would be charged for this months membership since I was never properly notified of these changes and as such I was not given an opportunity to reject these new charges and cancel my membership, and she advised that no, that is not our policy, so I will be charged for this month at the higher fee that i was never given notice about and as such was never given an opportunity to accept, as well as the first 15 days of next months membership fee, because NYSC requires a 45-day notice period to cancel. However, I was not given any 45-day notice (or any notice at all) that they were raising membership fees--tell me how that is fair??When I mentioned to the membership manager how upset I was about the whole scenario and that I was thinking about writing a review of NYSC, she became very angry and said if I wrote a poor review that I would be lying and as such blackmailing NYSC--we are all within our right to write a review of a merchant or service we are paying for, we are within our right to voice our opinions on our experiences with a vendor. Needless to say, I wrote a review, and hopefully, when I go into NYSC this evening to sign the paperwork to cancel my membership, someone will be there to assist with this process, otherwise it seems like I will be forced to pay for an extra day of gym membership for next month because my cancellation date will be delayed by a day (if not more, depending on when a membership manager will be available in the gym), even though it is totally out of my control when membership managers are in the gym to assist in cancelling a membership!!

I went back a couple weeks ago to see if I still had time left (they make you pay for 45 day grace period after cancelling) and she tells me that my account was not cancelled! She never put it through in the system, and couldnt remember that far back. I spent the next two weeks being bounced back and forth by all the different managers: Andrew, Alla, and Allie. All of them were inept and told me I needed proof that I had went in: which they NEVER GAVE ME. To make it worse, I was a member for under one full year, and because the 45-day grace period extended to just beyond the year mark, they want me to pay a SECOND $95 yearly fee! In short, dont join this gym. They are completely unprofessional, and will literally steal your money when you want to cancel. They charged me and my wife 180$ 2 months after we cancelled our membership. Every time I go there to complain, they tell me its strange that it wasnt cancelled in the system. I went there four times already and called 10+ times. Reading the other reviews, it finally makes sense. I thought it was just bad customer service, but it is actually their business model. Its a scam, so stay clear!

** UPDATE** worst gym experience Ive ever had, I ended up cancelling my membership.*Update* My experience during my time here has gotten much better, I have no further issues with being uncomfortable etc. **I have been a member at this gyms location for about 3 months now. The first couple of weeks were great! I was in need of a new gym in the area and this was my saving grace. They have a lot of variety and overall the facility itself (free weights, machines, different sections, etc), is great. Unfortunately, slowly but surely I began to feel more and more uncomfortable during my time here.I feel as if my presence is unwanted by the trainers. More than half the trainers make me feel incredibly uncomfortable due to their constant staring. Its hard to focus on my workout and enjoy my time there while they consistently gawk during my entire time there that day. Their body language suggests that they are unpleased and annoyed that I am there. Recently I have felt so uncomfortable that I actually stop mid workout and leave. Sometimes the trainers are paying so much attention to me, they arent focused on their client at all. I am a trainer myself and believe that fitness should be fun! I love motivating my clients and I always make sure that I provide an environment that is 100% inviting no matter what! The gym is a place for individuals to destress and work on themselves, body and mind. I do not believe that anyone should feel this way or have to deal with the level of unease that I have felt at this gym..especially from the trainers who are there as positive role models, to encourage and inspire. Actively looking for a new gym with good vibes!

Shady business practices where an annual fee is waived per agreement, but surprises you the following year with the fee because they simply dont care about you. The agreements are, therefore, garbage and you will be screwed over.

NYSC Uptown is well managed and clean. The staff is very friendly with the members. The trainers are dedicated to their clients and challenge them for the better. My trainer Jay Lally is a professional trainer who competes in body building competitions which requires a certain level of physical and mental discipline. I know that I am in good hands with reaching my goal of a great physique. I recommend him as your trainer with no hesitation. Planet Fitness or Crunch in Hoboken has nothing on this place!

Machines are ALWAYS broken. It’s like the hunger games trying to get on a treadmill, elliptical, stair master.I tried to cancel my membership which they told me to send them a cancellation letter via certified mail. I sent my breakup letter as directed. 4 days later since they’ve received it and I HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING. I called and left 3 messages today with the same woman, Tiffany, to speak with someone to follow up on canceling my membership. Each time Tiffany told someone would call me back but ... NOPE. NOTHING. Meanwhile... each day that passes the more $$ I am dishing out. DO YOUR JOBS PEOPLE.You’d think that with ALL the negative reviews about this process and the management that NYSC would do something about it. Clearly they don’t care about their clients. Disgraceful.

I liked a few things about this gym but the bad really outweighs the good for me. The process of ending your membership is ridiculous and I got charged a full years membership fee even though I had given written notice because the charge was within 45 days of my notice. I tried to contact management to ask that it at least be pro-rated but I never received a reply. All of the yoga classes I took were overcrowded so you couldnt fully extend positions without touching people around you. And I had a teacher bark at me to get out when I stepped into a studio while she was still leading a class which had overrun its time into the class I had registered for. I couldnt see the class until I stepped in and was taken by surprise at her manner. Then a class was cancelled after everyone had arrived and lined up to go in with no explanation. This gym has more equipment and space and classes than some of the other local gyms but sheesh, the hassle factor makes it not worth it!

Terrible customer service. After leaving the club (due to relocation) and signing the cancellation form, I kept being billed. Living out of state, the only thing I could was call the club. Though I was reassured that this was being taken care of, I STILL was being billed (this went on for about 5 months). I had to involve the bank, file a claim and go through a thousand hoops to resolve this.p.s.read the reviews below - it seems that many customers had the same issue as I did.

If you guys are reading the feed back on this damn gym in Hoboken, well, Im just to tell you guys NEVER do that.Ill tell you what they did to me.I was member NYSC in Bayonne, last year I closed my account for reasons moving address. So the receptionist told me that a cancellation fee would be charged. Ok, I did not read the contract (careful with the rules of the contract) I had to accept to pay the cancellation fee plus the month. Ok I did everything they asked me to do. So I asked them for a proof of payment and the manager just handed me a simple document without a proof of closing. When I persisted with him, he was annoyed to ask (this and my right to have this paper) Its been two months now, and I get a call charging me again, just NYSC of Hoboken. I was surprised cause I NEVER EVER when to this gym ago. They let me to pay 36 dollars, I tried to talk to the manager and she never received me or answered me my calls. I was disappointed they charge me again the fee and a month? This is so ridiculous, I really dont like to remember this terrible experience story, so I leave here my terrible experience with this damn academy. If you have plans to make your membership, please think twice time about enrolling at the NYSC in Hoboken.

Cancelling with this NYSC is a nightmare! Im honestly not a person to complain and it takes a lot to get to me, but I had to share because Im so fed up. I cancelled my membership in March as I moved out of state and theyre still charging me. After multiple conversations with the manager and my credit card company, Im STILL getting emails about past due notices even though the manager assured me all would be cleared. I would never recommend NYSC just because this process has been and is still such a hassle!

Overpopulated gym where once you sign up the management avoids you at all cost when you want to cancel your membership. I had to chase them for 3 months, they were never available, they said they would cancel and now another 4 months later I am still being charged. Although the people at the front desk are truly helpful and kind, the management is useless.

I really love the atmosphere at this NYSC location. Its a really cool workout vibe and the staff is always really friendly. It is a tight spot but its Hoboken so if you want a ton of space, this isnt for you. The layout works really well with the space limitations. My only concern with this location is cleanliness. I would give a 4-star rating, but there are some real dusty areas in the gym, unclean cup holders at some of the cardio machines, and rust stains in the toilet bowls. So this location really needs a heavy-duty, incremental cleaning and it will be really good.

To all Managers from Hoboken (14th St.), Hicksville, and Woburn,I have been consistently getting $15 reoccurring charges from the Hicksville location for some UNKNOWN reason, which no staff member is able to explain to me, and now I am starting to get the same re-occuring charges from the Hoboken location. This is completely unacceptable because every time I ask any staff member at these gyms why I am being charged I get a bunch of different excuses. Sometimes I hear that I need to go to my original gym and speak to their manager about these charges. When I speak to my original gym (Woburn), I am told that I need to speak to the local gym that is charging me.I have only used the Hicksville gym location maybe three times, and NO ONE ever mentioned to me that I would start getting charged. The last time I went to the Hicksville gym, I was told that my membership needed to be upgraded, which is why I was getting charged.Over two weeks ago, I had upgraded my membership from Regional Passport to Passport via the Woburn gym, and then later even called to CONFIRM by another staff member that my membership was upgraded to Passport. I went to the Hoboken location later that week, and even the staff member at that time confirmed that I had a Passport membership. So I am unable to understand why I am being wrongfully charged by this location too. Each gym is not taking responsibility for their own mistakes/wrongful charges. Now, I am being wrongfully charged, not by 1 gym now, but two (Hoboken and Hicksville). I have been a loyal member for at least two years, but at this point, with the way I am being charged and how much I pay for membership, I think it is better to go a more elite gym (Lifetime or Equinox) because none of your three locations are able to resolve my issues/concerns. I am requesting that ALL my reoccurring charges on my account are credited back from the beginning of the charges and this whole issue is resolved (from both Hicksville and Hoboken).Best,A Chani

Do not do private training it is a huge ripoff!!!The skinnymake sure you read all the fine print. They will make it very easy to sign up and it will be impossible to cancel. They will also bill you and hold you responsible every month.Heres my story. In October 2015 I signed up for a 3 month personal training package and the end of the package the trainer who I thought was good asked me if I wanted to continue and buy another package for a month.I did this for January 2016 to May 2016. In the middle of May I told the trainer that I would have to stop since my work schedule changed. Despite me communicating that to him, I was still billed for training for the month of June. When I went to the manager to ask what the bill was for he said that since I didnt give a written cancelation within 30 days that I would be billed for June and July. Now mind you this is a $480 bill per month! At this point I should have joined Equinox instead of a crappy NYSC!When I told him that I couldnt physically make the June sessions (I had 3 more sessions left) because of my work schedule he said he would freeze my personal training membership for a year and add on the 3 sessions to the 4 that I would be charged with for July)Now when you have a 30 day cancellation notice on a month to month personal training you would literally mean you would have to cancel your membership before signing up for the month which makes no sense! Also since the trainer was the only person that I was dealing with at the time one would think that if I told him that I wanted to stop training that would be sufficient notice that I wanted to stop training!Long story short I had to actually call AMEX to dispute that charge and cancel my regular membership at the gym which by the way the raised my membership price from 19.95 to 29.95 without notifying me!! But that is another story!!!My advice before you join a gym read the fine print and make absolutely sure that you will not be hit with charges and that there is a person that you can contact for any billing disputes. Also put the billing on American Express they are great at disputing charges. Finally avoid New York sports clubs there gyms are crowded / their training is not that great / their equipment is always breaking down / and they are unethical.

Everybody always is willing and ready to post a negative review, quickly, but are slow to give a positive review or accolades when they are well merited. Well, Im here to let you folks know that my husband and I finally cut our ties to LA Fitness in Secaucus, a signature club it is not, to NYSC in Hoboken North and we couldnt be happier. We really feel like weve leveled up 5 notches from a place where the women just gossiped with each other and the men ogled their Roid-made bodies in the mirror and never (except a select few who came early in the morning or late at night) really took their fitness seriously. I used NYSC for the first time for fitness and to manage pain in my neck and back, and I have to say, I am loving this gym. Unlike LAFatness, its super clean and organized and even has free wifi!!!! I can finally do a Gillian Michaels Abs and Boho Beautiful yoga workouts on YouTube from this gym, unlike at LA Fitness! Yay!! This perk is just awesome. Plus, the open space to stretch and do abs is awesome!!! All the weights and the way they have the nautilus machines organized is very well thought out. Bravo!!! And absolutely love the fact all the weights, mats and equipment look new and clean, unlike at LAFatness where all of it looks old, dirty, ripped and ratty. Loving this new gym in this beautiful neighborhood and love how upbeat, professional and sweet the NYSC crew and teachers are. Plus, free towels! Nice. Keep up the good work!!

I joined about three weeks ago and since then, they have not stopped calling, texting and emailing me. Why they think they can use my phone number for that, I have no idea. They also give you a fitness evaluation and instead of motivating me, or asking me what I want to work on and showing me the associated equipment, I had to do a series of tests. These tests include things like push-ups, sit-ups, squats, etc... the trainer working with me made me feel horrible and told me over and over that I had no idea what I was doing, I couldnt take any classes or use the weights because I was so inept, and other things like that to degrade me. Of course, they want you to sign up for personal training which for four one-hour sessions, costs over $300. I feel sorry for the people who actually believe these trainers. The trainer also tested my BMI, and the number they gave me was a 30, meaning obese. If they think a 58 130lb person is obese, they need to go back to basics themselves and consult a dictionary.

As a long time client of the NYSC Hoboken North, I am absolutely appalled by the way Ive been treated by the leadership of this club. After being a client of the NYSC for in aggregate over 10 years (with a 2X per week personal training membership for a year and a half) theyve met my attempt to cancel with attitudes and fees that arent reasonable (and which I was told didnt exist as long as 30 day notice was given). Now I have to work with Chase to deal with erroneous charges Im receiving, and it is a nightmare. This is not to mention that I had more than a month of unused sessions that I wasnt in the end able to use. In trying to work things out with the fitness manager to finish out my sessions, I was promised that he would return my first phone call within the next two days. He never called me back and completely ignored and did not return any of my subsequent phone calls. It is nothing short of unethical business practices and robbery of a customer to refuse to acknowledge or return outreach when services are owed (also conveniently until after the sessions had expired). Avoid personal training at this club like the plague- they will be happy to sign you right up and if you ever want to stop theyll just avoid you to keep your money and not provide the services that youve paid for. It is completely appalling and unacceptable, and i highly recommend anyone looking for a great gym look elsewhere.
