HAH took such great care of our cats over the last decade. They have always been kind, helpful, and professional. Dr Ward and Dr. Cash were always willing to talk over the options and help what was the best choice for our cats as they got older. The compassion of all of the staff has been much appreciated as we had to say goodbye to our last cat last week. They will definitely be taking care our next cats when the time comes.

Snickers (my four year old Ragdoll kitty) ingested some deck cleaner and developed serious burns and ulcers on this mouth, tongue and throat. He spent most of the weekend at the emergency care hospital in a nearby town, as most local vets were closed on the weekend. He was in pretty bad shape. I was so very worried about him. By the time I brought Snickers to Dr. Ward, he had not been able to eat or drink on his own for several days. But Dr. Ward checked him over thoroughly, explained his condition, and was very reassuring that he would recover. She went through some options for medications and treatment, and was so patient with him--never seemed to be in a hurry. She even sat down on the floor with some special soft food to entice him to eat. We went home with meds and a regime of feeding him with a syringe which worked well. On the third day after seeing Dr. Ward, Snickers began eating the urgent care food she gave us -- all on his own! Now hes eating that mixed with his regular food and seems himself again. He still sticks his tongue out occasionally to show me that its still tender, but hes eating and drinking well now on his own, and back to his normal, purring self. Thanks, Dr. Ward! You and your staff were amazing! Such a compassionate, kind staff and an exceptionally well run veterinary hospital! I am so fortunate that all my kitties over the years have been so well cared by Dr. Ward and the staff at Harrisonburg Animal Hospital. --Pat B (Penn Laird, VA) 10/28/20

My dog died one week after they examined him, said he was healthy.I went to this vet when owned by Dr. Terry Jessen. He was a amazing. The new owners are vastly different and frankly unethical. I brought my dog in for boarding. They required an exam to board; my dog checked healthy and current on everything. When I picked up my dog, after boarding, they handed my a huge bill, with fees for more than the boarding and exam costs. There were additional charges for processes that I did not authorize.I refused to pay for the extra as it had not been pre-approved. When I called them out on their tactics, they treated me like I was 12, talking down to me. One week later, my dog mysteriously died.I was not treated well at this new vet. Poor communication and attitude. I have found a new vet.

The ONLY veterinarians well go to. They are responsive, reliable, and friendly yet professional. My cat, Lemon Grass, was prescribed a liquid medication; they were very helpful in explaining to us (both in person and later over the phone) how to give it to her. They even offered us to stop by HAH again just so they could show us the process in person (though we didnt end up needing to). They are also very honest and clear when it comes to fees/costs/etc. Every step along the way, before proceeding with anything, they would discuss all our options for Lemon Grass and were very open about each of the costs (no hidden fees!) as well as what would be in Lemons best interest, not necessarily what would gain them more profit. Not to mention, I believe they are also the most cost-efficient veterinarians in Harrisonburg that we know of.She recovered very quickly from her UTI and now Lemon is back to her nightly routine of zooming around the house :)

We have been seeing the veterinarians at Harrisonburg Animal Hospital for over a decade now. They have always been so good to our dogs and have relationships with each one of them (we have 3). When we got our first dog, HAH went the extra mile to make sure he was taken care of. When he got sick, they not only gave us a supply of food to help with his stomach, but they also kept him overnight for observation and did not charge us for either. Since then, we have been loyal customers. This is despite the fact that we live nearly an hour away and pass many vet clinics along the way. This practice is unequipped for and insensitive to emergencies. My elderly Chihuahua had a massive stroke. I tried to call on my way to the office, but was put on hold-without first being asked if it was an emergency call. I was not expecting a miracle, I wanted to humanely euthanize my dog, Fawn, to avoid her suffering any longer. Upon my arrival, the receptionist, Leslie-realizing I did not have an appointment, left me standing at the desk for almost 10 minutes before addressing me further. This was our current Vet office, but the receptionist told me to go sit down in the waiting room. An owner who was, already waiting told the receptionist that we should go ahead of her because our situation was obviously an emergency. The receptionist said out loud to this owner, You bothered to make an appointment, so you are going in now. Meanwhile, I sat in the open front room holding my poor dying Chichi, Fawn, as she cried. Three people came in with their pets and watched as I sobbed over my dear little girl, listening to her suffer her final minutes of life. When we were finally put into a room after nearly 40 minutes of waiting, Fawn gave her last breath. Ten minutes later, a Vet I had never met before came in, and failed to introduced herself to me. She may have only been a tech. I told her my Fawn had died, but this Vet insisted on giving her the euthanasua solution as she stated she could detect a weak heartbeat. I told her, I hope you dont plan to charge me for this as she has deceased before you came in, she hesitated but replied, No. After personally working in emergency Vet medicine for nearly 25 years, I never treated a pet or its owner in this fashion and was shocked to have had this experience myself. Want to feel totally helpless and frustrated? Have people staring at you while you hold your dying baby in your arms for 40 minutes in an open waiting room, while being stared at. Im only hoping these people got to see what this practice has to offer when and if an emergency should happen to them. The receptionist is still working there, even after I called the O.M., but was told there must of been a misunderstanding??? Thankfully, the two owners who recommended this place to us have moved their pets to other Vets practices because of our horrid treatment. Find care elsewhere!

My dog was in labor and things were not looking so well. My husband decided to call around to vets to see if he could get some advice. He was told by Harrisonburg Animal Hospital that our dog was in dire shape and needed to be brought in. We brought our dog in and the staff was amazing, compassionate and understanding (well most). She had to have an emergency C-section but Reese was well taken care of as well as her pups. We were introduced to the bill before the C-section and they walked us through the low and high ends of the surgery and explained there were payment options which we were grateful for. Again the staff that welcomed us and the staff that took care of the pups were amazing and I have nothing but great things to say of them. My problems starts when the Office Manager comes in offering an in house payment plan which we were over the moon about as this was an unexpected fee that we had not planned for. We go over some details and than he speaks with his wife who is also an owner. When she comes in she was very cold not understanding or compassionate. Actually she made me feel like I was beneath her. I had my dead puppy in my lap, tears streaming and an $1100 bill looming over me and all she could say was to sum it up that they were there for us and took us in when they did not have too. They will not offer a payment plan in house because we were not a faithful repeat customer. She stated this was a lot of money and I needed to figure out how we were to pay it and that I needed to understand the business. Mind you she was in the room with the guy who originally stated he could do in house payments and he not once spoke up. I understand 100 that I owed this bill but it was my first understanding it could be on a payment plan considering the circumstances. Than this lady comes and had me leaving in more tears. I may not be a vet, but I do understand how businesses work. I also know that this person could take some lessons from her staff and learn compassion and communication skills. We were able to pay our bill and we are thankful for those who cared so much for my family and my Reese but because of the owners, we will not be back.Just to Edit from the below response. I did not deny the in house payment plan. I was told by the male owner I could do in house payment plan than the other owner came in and told me I WAS denied even after offering to put $400 down from Scratchpay, $200 cash AND $150 on the first of each and every month until payed in full. Because she denied us in house, we applied for another loan and was able to pay in full before pickup! When my husband picked the pups up the only thing offered was a business card and care information. Also we were never told that our pups had to be resuscitated! We were told they were healthy and doing well. This information would have been helpful to know, why were never told is beyond me. Regardless, the staff=amazing. The owners need better communication skills. I wont be back, nor will my friends and there friends. To the staff thank you for what you all did. Reese is better however we did loose the pups.

I had been going to Heartland but Dr. Arneson reeked highly of arrogance and went on about how hes superior to other veterinarians in the area which turned me off so I tried this hospital and am glad I did. Thanks a bunch!

For approximately 25 years Dr. Terry Jessen has cared for my animals. I must say he was a wonderful Vet. On April 5, 2016, I took my 15 year old golden retriever mix to the office. He was experiencing some back problems. The new Vet, Maureen Ward, quickly informed me the she was buying the practice when I inquired about Dr. Jessen. She stated he was no longer involved in the practice. She suggested I leave my dog there overnight so she could administer steroids to him. When I telephoned about Bucky on April 6, I was told he was getting better but they wanted him to stay another night. The next morning I was called by the vet tech around 7:15 A.M. and was told that Bucky had gotten sick thru the night and vomited. She said he was having trouble breathing. She went on to say the Vet would call me when she came in from Lexington around 8:30. I went straight to my pick-up, drove to the facility, walked in and went back to see my dog. He was absolutely pitiful. All symptoms of steroid overdose were present in my dog. He had begun vomiting during the night, was having seizures and had apparently suffered a devastating stroke. He was absolutely destroyed. His eyes were fixed in his head, he could not move, he was having seizures and fighting for his breath. There was no hope for recovery, I had to put him down. Bucky went there in good health other than he was suffering some back discomfort. I sincerely wish I would have kept my doggie home and cared for him myself. Im certain he would be here with me today. My message to everyone is....... IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET FIND ANOTHER VET.

This hospital treated us horribly. We had been with this vet for nearly 4 years. On Dec 19th a Friday at 2:30 we awoke to any pet lovers nightmare, our cat Monkee was on the floor, seemingly parylized and screaming in pain. We called the hospital and were told we could not come in the doctor was leaving in a hour. I explained how critical the situation was but was still told under no circumstances could I see the Dr. And if we just had to see someone we could try another vet. There is not a word for how I felt in that moment......but with my wife crying in the background and my cat dying by the second I started trying to find someone who would see us. About 45 minutes later I was in the office of an unfamiliar Dr. Having to make the decisions to euthanize my pet on a cold steel table, surrounded by strangers. Meanwhile Harrisonburg Animal Hospital has not contacted us at all and any communication through social media is just deleted like it never happened. In what is a dark moment for any pet lover, my hospital turned its back on me and has done or said nothing. By the way the dianosis was severe saddle thrombus leading to parylsis.
