Central Penn Fitness has something for everyone. A variety of aerobic exercise programs, fitness equipment, free weights, Olympic swimming pool, racket ball, etc. The biggest draw for me is the certified Tae Bo instructors who were trained by Billy Blanks himself. Top notch!! That alone is worth the price of admission.
I really like this gym but I wish that they did a better job at keeping the women’s only room just that. I understand it’s also for senior men but there’s still supposed to be women only hours, and a lot of younger men go there as well when there are machines open on the top floor and weight room. Otherwise I really love the pool, hot tub, and sauna. I’m able to social distance well too.
Very nice gym! Friendliest by far! Lots of great classes. A vibrant atmosphere! A warm greeting from Robin at the desk always starts the day off well!
Cant be giving up best gym in Harrisburg I think..........good people.....good vibes........love the pool and hot tub good for my muscles......
I really appreciate the professionalism and safety procedures they are taking in this COVID season. The only gym that take your temperature and provide your own cleaning spray bottle and everyone wears their mask. I have not see this safety in the other Gyms planet fitness are church fitness.
Clean; follows covid 19 guidelines of taking temp on entry, masking, and social distancing. No attitudes amongst members. Elliot and Lori are great class instructors!
We go there regularly and our time there keeps us healthy.
Knowledgeable and courteous staff. Top notch instructors. Certainly not a YMCA. Its a friendly and clean establishment.
Very useful user friendly
Overpriced and under served. You can get the same thing at any other gym for $20 a month less. It’s been god only knows how long since anyone cleaned the soap dispenser. How long does it take for mold to grow in a soap dispenser? There is slime and green mold and gray mold and god knows what else that whoever fills this HAS TO notice. It is so skeevy. How can you let people use this? Isn’t it a public health hazard?
Wonderful for silver sneakers! Look at the good reviews. It seems management has addressed previous complaints. When taking pool membership they gave me the hours for swim team use. Having been on a swim team myself, shame on all those below complaining about that while trashing them with one star. The other complaints are about pricing: its a gym. A big one at that.I ignore all reviews that complain about rude staff. Courtesy goes both ways. The pricing is great for me but I come with silver sneakers. My husband will drop by for $5 a class and join in the summer for the pool.I believe the instructors here do a wonderful job with seniors and disabled people. This may be a godsend. Get your parents here.
They have all the equipment I like and plenty of classes as well as an excellent swimming pool.Only one thing Id ask for and that is 2 buy more of the small 2, 5 and 10 pound weights that go on the Nautilus equipment as there is only one set and its crazy trying to work out if other people need those weights too. We have a nice group of members there too. Warm smell of colitas in the air.
Great pool and classes. Zumba and. Water classes!😊
Great service very polite staff, pool was nice as well as the hot tube. The excercise equipment needs some service done to them and the place could be a tad cleaner. Other equipment in bathrooms also need repair to them. But overall a good place if your not too picky and just want to swim and have a good workout.
Called to get membership prices and ask questions. The receptionist was rude. Very short with me when I asked for pricing clarification. $40 per month plus $20 fee & plus another $29 equipment fee. Asked for clarification and was told everyone charges that. Ah, no they don’t! The receptionist seemed to have no time to be bothered answering questions. If this is how they treat you from the beginning. No thank you!!!
Everything perfect
This is my preferred gym, overall, it’s great!! The customer service can be amazing or it can be moody and passive aggressive. That’s an easy fix, if they choose to fix it.
Clean facility, well kept machines and weights. Perfect amount of space, waiting for anything is very minimal. Hours are great, as well as cost. My biggest rave about this gym though, are the trainers. Fantastic people with great personalities. Group classes are offered in a wide variety. This gym is the best!
I used to go to PF but didn’t like how there weren’t any classes offered. Once joined to Central Penn I started attending the various classes that are included. The classes have awesome motivating instructors that make it fun to workout! After going for some time I’ve gotten to meet lots of positive people that share the same interests and goals as myself. I feel like I’m a part of a community at Central Penn and wouldn’t trade it for the world!
I had my sons 5th birthday party here. (Indoor pool party) it was awesome!! Ms.Barb was great! Very helpful. Everyone had a great time. We will be back...and some of us may also be getting memberships.
Nice sized and quiet private gym. Not over populated
If you have a child who wants to learn to swim but is afraid of water skip this place entirely. My son is 5 and water is his biggest fear. Hes made great progress, but the staffs behavior today was deplorable. Keep in mind this class is for children who never swam before. One of the instructors, whom was a blonde woman angrily said I dont know what to do with him five feet away from my wife. Venting frustration in front of a paying customer without talking to them directly is a big mistake....especially if you could hear them. Then the lifeguard assumed that he had a learning disability because hes afraid and not at the same point as other students. Since when does fear equal a disability? It was extremely judgmental, very rude and presumptuous. We will not be coming back and encouraging our friends with children to find another facility that is a little more patient and less judgmental. I didnt expect my child to fully learn to swim, but at least get used to the water with a CARING pool staff. Very rude people!
Committed to not spending money - very little attention to clean locker rooms & poor up keep. Courteous requests for clean facilities are ignored. Management posts signs everywhere, treating members like toddlers.
It was a Saturday morning and I had to go through a lot of changes to get the elevator to the entry level to leave. I am able to walk down up not up steps.
I only go for the water Zumba and it is awesome the twins with one of their husbands are amazing and they are great Kathy its also a lot of fun I didnt really think I was getting a work out until I figured out you cant move your feet like they do you just have to take smaller steps its great work out and also a lot of fun
I love the classes the instructors do an amazing job. The gym offers a lot with the equipment, pool and instruction. Would be nice if they brought the kids club back.
I just signed up a week ago, so far everything is great. Prior to signing up I read all of the reviews I could find about all of the gyms in the Harrisburg area, none of the gyms had all good reviews. after reading the reviews on this page I expected poor customer service, and rude people. But to my surprise my experience has been excellent. When I first came in Larry gave me and my wife a tour of the place and a free three day pass, and when that pass was over we signed up. The crowd is a little different than I was used to over at the Y, over here the crowd seems a bit more friendlier and much more talkative to each other and to us. As compared to the Y, we had been going there for 7 years and did not ever get to know more than 3 or 4 names. The bathrooms are clean as well, which was very important to us. And its less than half the price of our former gym.
DO NOT JOIN. Central Penn will try to gouge you for money at every corner. First off there are two memberships. The non-pool membership ($25) and the pool membership ($45). They both require a year contract. The sales manager will tell you that you should get the pool membership because you can change your membership at any time. That is a lie. You cannot. After youve joined they tell you that you can only change when your membership is up. Once your membership is up and you go to change your rate they try to hit you with a $99 penalty for modifying your contract - even though your contract is expired and you are entering into a new contract. I would highly recommend NOT joining this gym. The equipment is ok and the clients are nice but I refuse to do business and allow debit access to my account with an institution that is looking to scam any chance they get.
Great instructors who are knowledgeable, upbeat, encouraging and in shape; friendly staff; clean locker room and facility in general. CPF and Aquatics is like its own community center, focused on fitness and good health. I am glad I joined.
The club used to be nice (years ago). Now all the cardio machines are shoved right inside the front door so that youre not only on display all the time, but also get the bitter cold air every time the doors open. They did away with the steam rooms and the hot tub is never hot (when it works). The only good part of all the changes was being able to go right from the locker room into the pool (instead of trapsing through the hall like before), but with the new extremely slippery floors Id rather walk the hallway. Its such a different place (& not in a good way) that its just not worth it.
Dont Join ...management is rude and lies. I joined recently for the pool, things were going well and I was happy. Then they rented out the entire pool to two swim teams. However, when I joined I told them it was for the pool alone, no one mentioned to me that all winter long between the hours of 5:30 and 8:00 pm the pool is unusable to paying members. The manager is so arrogant he told me that I must rearrange my schedule due to it. Its the worst customer service I have ever received. So I am stuck at a old place where machines to work out on are broken and no pool.
I only go for the classes which are $5 for drop ins. The equipment is a bit outdated or overused but the classes are well worth it and typically gets a good gathering.
I went there for swimming classes for my daughter. Trainer is very nice and supportive.
Although they offer a very affordable price we found this gym to be lacking in several ways. We signed up primarily for the classes. The schedule is not varied and caters to retired people or folks who dont work till 5pm. The class schedule rarely changes. The yoga and pilates studio was next to the Zumba class and vibrated from the loud music during class - not helpful when you are trying to relax! Management never seemed to care, even after several people complained and asked for the class time to be shifted so it wouldnt conflict with the loud classes.I guess their business model is quantity of members not quality - as in offering a good experience. Also found the cardio equipment to be lacking - only about 8 treadmills with 1 or 2 usually out of order and the others often full. There are tons of elliptical machines but no one using them...so why not buy more good treadmills. The new spin bikes were really nice but once again the spin studio is tucked away in a dark, dismal little room. Not very inspiring. We cancelled our membership and have gone else where.
After reading all the reviews, I use to be a member of this facility years ago, I want to go for use of the pool. Since I work, my time at the pool would be evenings, but I didnt like it before when they had rented most of the lanes to Swim teams. I dont like the water being frigid cold, or the air temps being cold either. So, I will not be looking to ever get a membership there and the Friendship Center will be the place to get a family membership, for my spouse & I
I didnt even had a chance to experience the facilities and instructors, as the experience at the front desk was so bad!The gentleman at the front desk, who refused to tell me his name, but after investigations, I discovered it was Larry, was so unwelcoming, and on such a power trip, made this one of the worst experiences I ever had. He requested ALL my personal information: license, insurance cards, etc. But refused to state HIS name! When I dared speak (with an accent) and question what he had explained to me as being inaccurate, he TOLD me he was going to place me on a LIST and I will NEVER be able to set foot in that Aqua Club. He refused to put me in touch with a Manager or the Owner, but being a woman of action, found him anyway. The owner, a retired physician, CALLED me, but his only goal seemed to be to not be held responsible of bait and switch, as a result of the way Larry, the mystery man, explained the fees schedule.MY concern was that I had been treated in a condescending way. Dare I say, the word bigot came to my mind. Not sure if because I have an European accent, I am an older woman, I am not 20- years old? or Larry was in a bad mood? The owners follow-up call didnt make me feel any better and regretfully I must say that as a result of this overall experience I will never use either this Club, the P.T. the OIP or anything slightly connected to this facility or which PROFITS it.I will continue to do my aqua P.T.exercise at Hetricks Chiropractic in Middletown, where I am treated as a person and there is no Larry to make me feel like a nonperson.
They had all equipment work out !
I like the gym, but all I want to do is swim and they rent too many lanes to the EPAC swim team during peak times. I was hoping this would end in March but they just keep on renting.
Friendly staff and members. Up to date equipment, great arobic classes, and hot sauna.
Small groups of people social distancing
If you want a safe gym where the staff (lifeguards and managers) enforce the rules to protect their members DO NOT join this gym.If you care about your health DO NOT go to this gym. See pics.If you do not want bait and switch marketing, hidden fees and dishonest managers do not go here. Now for the LONG explanation:Ive been a member on and off since coming to Harrisburg in 1998. I was impressed with how clean the natatorium (pool area) was along with the general design (it has a lot of glass that lets in natural light). Unfortunately the gym has slowly and steadily declined over the years. The doors to the pool area are broken. As such when someone walks in or out they will not close. The once pristine pool now has stains around the edges and I have had to pick band aids and other debris out of the pool more and more often while swimming my daily laps. In an effort to keep the place open they have resorted to renting the pool out to local high schools. It used to be just one, but now I think there are 5 or 6 different teams in there (not counting masters who only ever took up two or three lanes). The coaches are rude and open the doors to the outside. I asked them often and nicely to close the doors to no avail. Finally I just shut them myself (which lasted till I got back in the pool and they opened the doors again. During the summer I dont mind but in the middle of winter?!?!? I was trying to swim with frigid 30 degree air blowing over the lanes. Now imagine you are in front of a TEAM of teenagers and three fully dressed coaches in a swimsuit, soaking wet and freezing from the winter air blowing in trying to get them to FOLLOW THE RULES while the lifeguard sits over in the corner and DOES NOTHING TO ENFORCE THE RULES.I have heart problems, that is why I work out. Last year I sat down with the fellow who runs the pool and discussed my concerns. At his urging, I wrote a long letter (email) as he told me to do explaining how cold air and effects wet bodies and how it IS NOT SAFE OR HEALTHY (not to mention being against the rules) to have the doors to the outside open in the middle of winter AT NIGHT. Last week on a cool fall night when I was there the same guy was sitting down there acting as lifeguard and... the doors were wide open AND NOW THEY HAVE A HUGE FAN BLOWING THE AIR INTO THE NAUTITORIUM! I felt like a fool for trusting him.Their pricing is interesting... they advertise $24.99 ($45.99 I think if you want access to the pool) a month but make sure you read the fine print. They will charge you $58 a year for equipment fees to keep the rates low! I didnt even notice the charge on my card till I looked after hearing guys in the locker room discussing how shady it was that the gym charged them twice that month (once for $24.99 and again for the equipment fee). They finally fixed the roof which has been leaking for the past 5 years and gave it a new coat of paint and some new furniture; but it will take more than cosmetic changes to make this gym great again. The people running this place need to build the trust back up they have lost by failing to keep their word and make their gym a safe and pleasant place to maintain your health.Update: the roof still leaks.
My go to place for exercise and friendship.
The pool is too cold during winter time, cant take it!
Great Gym
Ive been a member for years
Its okay
Ownership is horrible.
