I participated in the Body Works I group. The group sessions were thoughtfully planned and compassionately run. I appreciated how respectfully and kindly all group members were treated, as well as the breadth and depth of topics and activities that were included. Months later, I still look back on experiences from that group fondly. I recommend it (and the Three Birds practice) to anyone who would like to learn to practice self-care and respect their own body as-is.

The information and consultation support offered by this practice is life-saving. In every communication I have had with these providers, Im struck by their professionalism, and compassionate commitment to supporting all clients - many of whom are struggling with severe symptoms. The evidence-based and clinical knowledge each person brings are indispensable. It is truly a gift to have these professionals in our local community!

The providers in this practice provide therapy from a compassionate place for my clients whom I refer to them. They are quite skilled in serving those with eating disorders and disordered eating, as well as other mental health issues. Their professionalism and reliability has helped many of my clients and I would highly recommend this practice.

I was fairly a new client seeing Dr. Lindsey Umstead for one-on-one counseling. Recently she offered a 6 week group therapy class that I signed up for. The original email that went out to everyone stated what each session topic would be. Session 1: Introduction & Goal Setting; Session 2: Mindfulness Skills; Session 3: Distress Tolerance skills; Session 4: Emotion Regulation; Session 5: Interpersonal Effectiveness; and last Session is Putting it all together. The fee was $45 per session which is very fair. Dr Lindsey is also a very good therapists. However, only 2 of us showed up that night; therefore, I get a call from the owner Maria Parades whom I have never met before letting me know that they would not continue the class since only 2 of us showed up. (keep in mind that the original email never stated there had to be a minimum # of clients to do the classes). She said it was just not cost effective for them to do the classes with only 2 people. I explained that the other lady and myself desperately needed these classes and could some other alternative be arranged for the 2 of us to be able to do the workbook study. Maria Parades replied that 2 people do not constitute group therapy. I said I understood that but lets not get hung up on the title of the sessions and yet lets find a way that the 2 of us could continue. She said no, it wasnt possible. After realizing she was not willing to help the 2 of us who desperately wanted to learn these skills, I said, well I guess you are not going to charge us the $45 for the introduction session. She firmly replies you received therapy and I will charge your credit card which is on file at my office. I was utterly shocked and said, what therapy?? It was simply an introduction to the sessions of material that we would cover, we introduced ourselves to each other and told why we wanted to attend these classes. We also discuss what our goals were to gain after the 6 sessions. So again I explained that the first session was introduction and there was no therapy per sea. I continued to say it seems very unethical to charge clients for a series of classes that they chose to cancel. She abruptly said she had to go but she would call me back. However, she never did call me back and she charged me $45 on my credit card to sit through an introduction/getting to know you class. Clearly the owner Maria Parades is only concerned with the money as she was willing to loose a potential long term client over $45. I am an office Administrator and work with over 500 patients a month. Never would our practice care more about the money than the patient and their care. I make patient account adjustments all the time for good will sake. However, I was not sure if my response and expectations of not being charged were appropriate or not so I discussed the matter with several area small business owners in the same profession and ALL of them were surprised at Maria Parades. Not only was I fairly new to the practice, I had never met her, I offered other alternatives to help me and the other client continue in class, and she was not professional when she said she would call me back and did not. I was very very disappointed as I had hope to have a good working relationship with this office.

I follow Three Birds Counseling on a couple different social platforms and always find its content so uplifting and inspiring. Maria and the other therapists at Three Birds are always so thought provoking but in such a caring and gentle way. Their content/words have helped me live in my truth, opened many doors to acceptance, and welcomed me into a community of like-minded humans on similiar journeys. Wish I was actually able to participate live in-person in NC, but Im so happy to have this connection via Instagram and FB, Amazing work, Three Birds. THANK YOU!
