Probably the worst place I’ve ever been to, to get my nails done with shellac. I wanted shellac with white tip and it turned out horrible. The lady seemed like she didn’t know what she was doing. She even mentioned she rarely does nails. White tip lines look all crooked, I told her I wanted light pink for base and she put a glittery base, not neat at all and as soon as I got home they started to chip!! I could of done way better myself at home.

I have been going to Design 1 for years and have decided that I am done with this place. They are extremely over priced in comparison to every other place around. Which I used to be fine with paying because the quality was there, but the last 4-5 times I’ve been there, the quality hasn’t been.I got my hair done a while back and wanted some highlights and a few inches cut and the highlights I got were terrible. They were too chunky, not mixed in well and not at all how I had wanted them. I ended up spending even more money to go somewhere else and have my hair fixed. And that salon asked if I had done them myself at home because of the quality.I’ve also had my nails dipped here twice now and both times they’ve completely chipped apart or fallen off in large chunks within just a few days.Paying $70 to get my nails done, only to have them fall apart literally 2 days later is just not for me anymore.Good luck to anyone who tried this place. I hope you have money to throw away since you’ll need to pay to get anything they do fixed somewhere else.

I decided to give this location a try since I love the Gaines location and they were booked the week I needed my haircut and front balayage.Highly disappointed. The hair stylist was a veteran there and I paid over $50 for literally her telling me how my hair should look and to only use the scissors 3 times.......YES THREE TIMES...... SNIP SNIP SNIP DONE......$50 dollars for 3 snips? and my hair looks no different. I only get my hair cut every 8-10 months. Im too nice and trusted her judgement since this is her job. The front balayage looks like nothing was done to my hair as well. all the prep work was done by her assistant which in my opinion did more than the actual stylist. Paid over $240 w/tip (all services together) for my hair to look no different. NEVER coming back to this location again.

I love Design 1 in Grandville. I had another hair salon and stylist just destroy my hair. Design 1 helped me through that difficult time. They understood my situation and set me up with a great stylist. She did a great job of restoring my hair color back to my beautiful auburn color and tried to give me a cute hair style with what little hair I had left. The other salon scalped me. I love Berlin and everyone at Grandville Design 1. Great place to go.

I love Megan V. I posted a negative review a few weeks back but realized you get what you pay for. Yes it is PRICEY but the work performed is up to par and they don’t damage your hair. Will be returning soon!

Nail beds and cuticles not cleaned or trimmed. When commented on it was told they looked fine. Parts of nails not even painted. Very little attention the detail.This was to be a bridle party outing and the timing and spacing out was not conducive.Place could have been cleaner. One of the women in our party had something very inappropriate said to her by the person doing her facial.The day reminded me why I stopped using Design One about 15 years ago.

I met with Brooke today. She is amazing and made my hair exactly how I wanted it. The place is beautiful and all the stylists are super friendly. Thanks again Brooke for making my hair dreams come true!

I moved to Grandville in November and needed to find a place to get my brows done. I really like that you can make an appointment online, and there’s always availability. It’s a little loud in there but that’s to be expected. I’ve had two people do my brows and they’ve done a great job! I’ll definitely continue to come back.

My daughter and I both had cuts and foils. I had partial foil with root cover up and she had full foil. I paid $335 which included tips for both girls. After we left the assistant manager called me and said I owed another $74. I will never give them my business again!

Had SUPER high hopes for this place! Went in with grown out blonde hair left with grown out blonde hair with a red tint to it 😭 after spending 200 dollars! Called back up there to see if they would be willing to fix it because it was absolutely nothing like what I wanted (I wanted a dark brown balayage with blonde) they said they would fix it for free but then called the day before my appointment and told me I would have to pay for it all again! So disappointed

Highly recommend hair stylist Sheri! Ive seen so many hair stylists in Grand Rapids (Ive been salon hopping since 2007!) and I finally found someone who consistently does a great job! She is like a sculptor-- she really understands form and balance, as well as what looks good with my face shape. Plus, she has great style herself, so Im always excited to follow her recommendations when she has an idea for something new. Ive recommended her to all of my friends. I cant recommend her enough!!!

Went here for the first time to get a balayage on my natural brown long hair. Went home to having streaky highlights. While it didn’t look terrible, it wasn’t the style I asked or paid for. I asked if I could go back in today to get it fixed up or a partial refund but was told they wouldn’t be able to get me in for another week and now I’ll be waiting to be contacted for a refund. I just want my hair the way I want it, it was never really about the money. Now I wish I would’ve kept my natural hair color that so many people already loved. Won’t be coming back here or probably anywhere to get hair done if they can’t fix it for a long time.

I went in yesterday for my 1st ever deep tissue massage, I had terrible lower back pain along with neck and shoulder pain. Jill did massage, it was incredible!! She worked out all the knots and sore spots! I woke up today feeling like a million bucks!! It was a little pricey but totally worth it! I would highly recommend her! And will be coming back!

Moved to the area recently and was nervous about trying to find a new salon. Made my appointment with Sheri online, which was super easy. I was so pleasantly surprised. The salon was very nice and the staff was very friendly. Sheri did a great job cutting my hair and was so helpful in talking me through how to add my own loose curls at home. I’ll be back!

Massage therapist should be wearing mask over nose. Front desk should not lower mask to sneeze, thats the whole point of the mask. They need to train their employees.

We have just moved to Michigan and was given a couples massage. It was wonderful. We so need the stress relief and they did a great job.

I paid for the one hour pedicure. I was confused after the girl was done with my pedicure after only 30 minutes. When I went to pay I asked for an explanation of what the Signature package one hour pedicure was since I wasn’t even in their facility for an hour. They told me they include dry time in that which is 20 minutes. So basically you pay $60 for a 30 minute pedicure and then just to sit there. The pedicure was nice but definitely wasn’t what I was expecting. I will look elsewhere next time.

Imagine my humiliation at arriving at my 3rd stop after my visit on Friday to find I had dye stains all over my left cheek, forehead & neck. I had to buy makeup to cover it so I could complete my errands. The color was a lot lighter then I asked for. The stylist used toner 2 times to try to correct it. It helped some, but was still too light. The cut was good & the stylist was so nice. The salon is nice & the prices were reasonable, just wish my outcome had been better.

I went here to get my eyebrows waxed for the first time ever. I set up an appointment over text which was super fast and convenient! I did have to wait about a half hour once I got there (about 5 minutes before scheduled appointment) but the waxing only took about 5 minutes. The lady who waxed my eyebrows was very fast and definitely seemed experienced! Will be going back in a few weeks.

Disappointed in my first experience with Design 1. After I was asked if I had ever been there, to which I replied no, she told me to wait upstairs for my name to be called. Never offered me any beverages or stated that I could help myself. 20 minutes I waited. I walked back down to ask how much longer as its been 20 minutes & her reply was, Shes probably with another client. I walked back upstairs to wait another 10 minutes before deciding to leave. I did walk past the girl, she saw me & made no attempt to get me to stay. Its to bad, too, Im a good tipper. No stars!

Wedding: Katie is amazing - she gets 5 stars all day, my hair was beautiful and flawless. Design 1 scheduling was obnoxiously complicated and ridiculously expensive and non-accommodating.

Had a facial with Taylor. She is great! Very super relaxing. She was very good about explaining what she was doing, but knew I wanted to relax, so she didnt talk the whole time. I had the refine and rejuvenating facial, and will go again!!

Never again. Overpriced, turned my hair orange and didn’t cut it close to what I wanted. Also they jam in as many appointments as possible, so the stylist you are paying 3x for only does part of the work. Went back to discuss my color with the Manager to be told there wasn’t one available until the following week. I received an unintelligible voicemail, which I assume was the manager... No further contact since. Stay far away from this place as they only care about taking as much money with as little service as possible.

Large array of services offered, excellent massage therapy (thanks, Faith!) and nail services (thanks, Tricia!). They also have an wide selection of fantastic products and frequently run specials. I also appreciate the beverage upon my arrival. :)My only gripe is that I really think children should not be allowed in a spa - thats my time to relax and the presence of small, rowdy children erodes that relaxation and it also makes the spa seem much less nicer than it is.

Great facility and massages were good too. Only complaint would be the same as reviewer Natasha Sandoval mentioned in her review. We paid for a 1.5hrs couples massage with 80 minutes hands-on and only received 70 minutes hands-on. I did receive a message from them after I submitted a review on another site- Im sure they wanted offer a coupon for 15% off future services or something. This issue should have been corrected from others bringing this to their attention or they need to change their website to reflect the actual hands-on time.

I was in Michigan visiting family over the holiday break and decided to give the Design 1 Spas a try. I had an amazing experience at the Grandville location. I had a full body massage with sugar scrub, a facial and the signature pedicure. All 3 services were the best I have ever had. And I Spa regularly. The staff is so friendly, the atmosphere is perfect, there services and products are top notch.

Absolutely amazing place. Got a 25 min massage, hair cut, and a pedi. Well worth the price to be able to really relax. Such friendly staff too. Will be going again for sure.

My massage with Rebekah was **phenomenal** I requested a specific kind of pressure and pointed out trouble areas, and it was the by far the best experience!!! I loved the sea salt, the hot towels, and unintimidating atmosphere. She can be as social or quiet as you would like. When my appointment was finished, I felt it was worth the drive, time, and expense. Highly recommend (hearts Emojis)

I tried this place for the first time and no one I mean every where I go can never get my hair the way I like it. Do all respect she was a very nice girl loved her but wish I would of loved my hair at this point I did payed 100.00 and it does get frustrating cause u just want ur hair the way u like . I don’t like saying anything cause it was done. I wanted my hair to be blonde and it came out like a dirty brown blonde I don’t know it’s just Frustrating at times because you pay so much to get it done and no one can get it the way I like . Probably won’t go back !

Ive enjoyed several signature pedicures over the past four years with small groups of friends and family. Its a treat to spend time together as there are plenty of heated massage chairs in a large area. Or, try the private room for two--which would also be fun for a husband and wife. After the pedicure you can sit in a fireside waiting area with snacks and drinks to relax a bit. The staff is friendly and the spa is a high-class environment.

Relaxing atmosphere. If you really are looking to treat yourself, this is definitely a place to consider to do so.

Got a hot stone massage and it was amazing! With a complimentary salt back rub which was refreshing. The mani and pedis following were great. Theres nothing to complain about except for they should expand for busy Saturdays. May be time to relocate! Thanks for the relaxing day!

So at first I had left a bad review due to the fact that my first experience was not good at all. But I am returning to leave a better review because the manager Trica reached out to me and offered me something to apologize for the bad experience. I was very glad that somebody took action and made an effort to fix the wrong doings. I got a free 25min massage with any perks. Jane was the lady that did my massage and it was wonderful! It was very relaxing and I was extremely grateful to receive it. The whole experience was different with very nice receptionists and I never had a ride encounter. Ill still probably never go back for anything as far as a manicure or pedicure, but I will definitely go back for any future massages!! Thank you for helping make my experience better design one!

I used Design 1 for my entire bridal partys hair and make-up this past June and absolutely loved them! I talked to one of their managers over the phone who booked all the hair and make-up appointments for myself and my seven ladies. They even mailed me a schedule to keep track of all the appointment times. I had previews done for both hair and make-up which took a lot of stress off my shoulders for the day of! I cannot rave about Steph from Aura enough, she was amazing!!!! I would definitely recommend Design 1 to anyone who needs hair and make-up done for their wedding.

Stopped by and spoke with Lindsay for a consultation for a short summer cut. She said it was great. Made my appointment and went in for my haircut. I spent $85 there between haircut and product suggestions. Just short of putting a bowl on my head my haircut went horribly wrong. I made another appointment to go back and speak with Lindsay about it. She showed me how to blow dry my hair. I told her it was not at all what I wanted, didnt even come close to the picture and I looked like a boy. She proceeded to take me to front counter and said give her her money back she doesnt like her haircut. And told me go back to my old salon ..... Really !!! Rude !!! Giving me my money back was not what I asked for. But yes I will go back to my old salon....Lindsay charged me $55 for a haircut that will take months and months of growing out to try and fix. Not worth the money and the attitude should be left at the front door when your in customer service. But hey, thanks for the glass of water !

Great service every time

Tonight was my first visit to this salon. I was so nervous to go-I have had so many people mess my hair up in the past. However, Stephanie was my stylist and she was AMAZING! I had a picture of what I wanted to have done & she made it happen! I will for sure return to see Stephanie again! From scheduling my appointment, getting my hair done to finish, all of the staff was so very kind. Other businesses should take notes from these wonderful lovelies at Design 1!

Had the 50 minute massage which was great as always. Thought Id try another place, but just not the same. Design 1 is upscale and you get the whole experience of being pampered in a classy place.

Ive been coming here for some time. Typically I go to see Amanda. Shes pretty awesome. Always seems to enjoy cutting my hair as her client and not as just another number, which is cool. I hate being just the next customer.

Dawn is the absolute best hair stylist there, I would definitely recommend going to see her specifically. I still wouldn’t recommend Kelsey, I would have appreciated it if she would have apologized for my hairs mishap, I feel like that’s the polite thing to do? But it’s all okay now, I have a killer hair cut and I have plans in place to do some fun color with Dawn in the near future, it’ll all work out just fine!Update since the manager called me in to have my hair fixed:I met with one of their master stylist Dawn, she is their best stylist for pixie style cuts. I was greeted with an open and warm personality. She has lots of knowledge on how to cut, color, and style hair. Which is fantastic for someone like me who doesn’t really understand how to do their own hair. I left there today looking like a million bucks and feeling like it too. I enjoyed the conversation I had while getting my hair done, it made time seem shorter than what it was. Dawn gave me a little tour of the salon, I met Skylar in the make up department and she gave me some lip color. The friendliness and professionalism I received from Dawn & Skylar made up for the other day. I definitely will say if your hair means a lot to you go see Dawn, I would not risk seeing someone else and getting a butcher job.I will definitely be back to see Dawn. I am happy I gave them another shot, it turns out this is actually a really nice high end salon to get your hair done.Thank you for reaching out to me so promptly to fix my hair. When she was styling my hair she kept yanking it and asking in a rude manor if she was hurting me, after I said yes she continued pulling my hair. Very friendly from the start, until I told her about the hair style I wanted. I would have gotten a better haircut if I would have went to Walmart...

Had an awful experiance getting my nails done here. They chipped off 2 days after getting them done. I have had good experiance with everything else.Edit: I still have not heard from anyone after I was told someone would reach out to me.

I was reluctant to visit a salon vs a barber shop. But I had a really bad haircut from another place and needed it fixed. Tessa was great. She made it look much better and Ive been going to her ever since.

Had a package with a massage, manicure and pedicure. All of it was wonderful, the massage with Lindsey was fantastic!

I bought my wife a 1 hour massage with Jill and I could not be more upset with how her visit went. Jill called her back at 1:10 (appointment was at 1:00), talked to her for about 5 minutes, started the massage around 1:15-1:20, and ended the massage at 1:50. I paid $75 for an hour and got about 35 minutes out of it. And to make it all that much more professional, Jill was asking my wife about her family and she had mentioned that she was married to another woman. Jills attitude did a complete 180 and became very rude. My wife had mentioned that the area Jill was massaging was hurting and asked her to lighten up, but Jill did not and continued to hurt her. And to sum it all up, my wife was asked to go elsewhere after the massage was over. Worst discrimination ever and we will never go to a Design 1 again.

Ok, bare with me. I don’t normally do this. Today I received a color from and barely a trim from this place. The stylist was at first very informative and told me that since the last salon I went to botched my hair so bad, that it was unlikely I would get the exact color I wanted. So, she tested some hair and showed me what I’d get. I agreed to go ahead with it. She was super quick, but seemed to not want to finish because she said she was going to do ombré underneath. (Not what I asked for) next thing I know I have multiple assistants coming over and checking my hair and this and that. A different gal dries my hair, then my stylist comes back. Seemingly rushed this time. I say “I probably need about and inch and a half taken off” she says “no you need a few snips and you’ll be good.” So, literally a few snips is what I got. She tells me I need a hair mask and sends me on my way. She doesn’t allow me to specifically tell her what I want, nor does she tell me how much she just charged me for those few snips. At the counter, there were a few people and reckless toddlers up there so it was a bit hectic. My bill comes to $200!!!! I’m confused, overwhelmed and just in shock, but I’m thinking that must be a really good hair mask...whatever I’ll figure it out in a minute. I pay. I leave. I go home to look at my receipt to find that those few snips of my hair was $60!!!! I wish I was exaggerating when I say “few snips of hair” so, I call and ask to speak to the manager. No big deal, they’ll make it right, I’ll go back in in 6 weeks for touch ups...no big deal. A few hours later the manager, very polite, informs me that it’s not the stylists job to tell me how much a cut is and weather I get a full blown hair cut or a few snips it is the same price. So I ask, why don’t you ask people when you’re booking them what level of stylist they want? If I had known it was $60 I wouldn’t have done it. Is that why she rushed me to the cashier so fast? More conversation was had and this manager could only offer me a gift card. I would have been happy with a $60 credit to my account for my next appointment with the information now that this is what this specific lady charges. But nope. Or even a free ACTUAL hair cut next time with like some money off or something. She did ask me to come in and get the cut I wanted, but I feel like for $200 I shouldn’t have been rushed and I should already have the cut I want AND a full foil on my head instead of a partial. The gal did pretty good on the color, it just sucks that the rest went down hill. They obviously don’t care about losing a client either, I was prepared to keep going back there if they would have just made this one interaction right. Way WAY overpriced for what you actually get. I’m pretty upset, fighting back tears at work. This is ridiculous. I just wanted them to make it right.

Ive had massages, manicures and pedicures. I have enjoyed the experience and appreciated the results. I can endorse this salon whole-heartedly. My technicians have been timely and the counter help is friendly.

This was my second time at this salon. A few years ago I had a massage done here that was good, but cut short by 5-10 minutes. My husband surprised me with a massage appt for my birthday. I wouldnt have chosen to go here again, but I figured my last visit might have been a fluke, so I decided to give it another shot, especially considering it was with a different person. It was supposed to be a 50 minute massage. I looked at my clock a few minutes before the massage began and as soon as the massage ended. Only 40 minutes had passed and that includes the time I waited for her to come into the room. I asked the manager about this and she said that it wasnt normal and apologized. She gave me 15% off and a free sugar scrub upgrade for my next massage, but I definitely wont be back or recommend this place to anyone.

I am a licensed cosmetologist and have been doing my hair at home for around 6 years. recently, i decided that i would treat myself and get my hair colored at a salon. so i book an appointment and am very excited. when i get there, i have about 4 inches of my natural hair regrowth (medium brown or level 5-6) and the rest of my hair is an ashy-neutral platinum blonde (a level 9). I sat down with my stylist and explained that i wanted 1 inch of my natural hair and then I just wanted the rest to be the same color blonde i have, just blend the 2 together like a really short ombre almost. She couldnt seem to wrap her head around the fact that thats what I wanted and proceeded to try and convince me to get a balayage or full back-to-back foils. After maybe 10 minutes of me trying to explain this very simple color that I wanted, I gave up and said she could do a backcombed full foil. So we went over to the color station and she did her thing. I had a LOT of foils on my head and I know that when I do my hair at home Im able to go from my medium brown hair to platinum blonde in 1 process. She finishes the foils and puts me under a heater (something I never find necessary when I do my own hair, but go off I guess). She comes back eventually, takes me over to the shampoo bowl and washes the bleach out of my hair. She goes to the back to mix up a toner (no idea what shes about to put on my hair) and comes back and puts it on. Now, as far as hair goes, a level 1 is basically black and a level 10 is the lightest blonde, just fyi. SO, she rinses out the toner and brings over another stylist. Apparently the toner didnt take evenly so theyre discussing their options. My hair usually needs 2 rounds of toner so I didnt think anything of it. Until I hear the words 7VV and 6T. Wait.. my hair is naturally around a 6, and i asked for at LEAST a level 8 or 9. I sit, hoping theyll come up with something else. My original stylist had another client at this point so she leaves me with stylist #2 that had been consulting on my hair. Stylist 2 brings over another different stylist (#3) to look at my hair and they settle on a straight 6T toner for my hair. Not gonna lie, at this point I start crying. a little. So, stylist 2 mixes up 6T toner and puts that on the part of my hair that was just bleached. Were gonna let that marinate for a little she says. Toner is supposed to be quick - on and off - its not supposed to marinate. Essentially I was getting my hair colored at this point cuz I sat at the shampoo bowl with medium ash blonde hair color on my head for maybe 15-20 minutes. Stylist 3 came over, rinsed my hair out and gave me a complimentary hair treatment with a hot towel. Eventually I am brought back to my original stylists station where I see just my natural hair color in the mirror. No blonde. She starts blow drying my hair. My hair is WAY DARKER than it was when I came in. I start reaally crying at this point lol. Years of keeping my hair a beautiful, healthy platinum blonde literally down the drain. She finishes drying my hair and tells me I can go up to the front desk so I can speak to the manager. I feel bad for the stylist, and I like to avoid conflict as much as possible so I was just gonna pay and go home and fix my hair myself, but whatever. I talk to a lady and she tries to convince me to come back in and get my hair done by someone different so I can be happy with my hair. 3 people had hands on my hair today and it still got totally messed up, Ill stick to doing my own hair. She takes my information and says shell give it to the actual manager and theyll get a hold of me. I leave (she said I didnt have to pay) and my hair is SILVER. Like this streaky purple-grey abomination. I still have 4 inches of my natural hair - no blonde in it whatsoever - and then the rest of my hair is essentially dark silver (but not a cute silver) with purple streaks but also somehow brassy up towards the part of mt hair where my natural hair and the previously-blonde-now-purple hair meets. Im devastated.

Ive had my hair cut/colored here many times, by several different stylists, and its always been a great experience.

I love this Spa but it is a little pricey. I go here when I want to give myself a little extra special pampering.

Not a spa. A hair and nail place. No comfy seating for before treatment. My tea mug was dirty and they offered me diet coke!!?? They also had quaker oaks granola bars. Locker room small and not very clean. Not high end but they charge you high end prices.

I recently had a scheduled appointment with Irene for the Aura make-up event. I arrived 5 minutes before my scheduled time & checked in. I proceeded to wait for 30 minutes at which time I went up to the desk to tell them I was on a time limit. They said they would check where she was ( keep in mind both girls were well aware I was waiting & standing behind the desk - not busy - the entire time ). Irene then came out. She did not apologize - simply stated that we would have to do the very minimum because she had another appointment after me. She was very rushed, reminding me constantly that my time had to be cut short. I ended up purchasing exactly what I went in for and none of the additional products because she honestly didnt show me anything I didnt already do.I have had this service before & also had Irene before and been very pleased. Not sure what happened this time but very disappointed with the service.
