The word “Charities” should be replaced with “For Profit”. The people who work here are rude and inconsiderate. Sherri Neal-Watkins was the absolute rudest and most dishonest person I have ever had to deal with in customer service. All they care about is making money and definitely not helping people.
You let a couple adopt a child knowing that the biological father wanted his child. Now, 3 yrs later, that child is going to be taken from the only parents they know and given to the parent that should have had them from the beginning. Sickening.
What is This Place? Seems like mostly everything on their website was not for Grand Rapids.
Very poor service, they dont investigate nothing like their supposed to when you are trying to adopt your grand children from cps foster care. They go with what cps wants and thats sad. A foster home before grand parents that have a good safe home for them.
Ive seen first hand the works this organization has done in the community and in the lives of children all over West Michigan. Soups On, Lets go to bat for Kids, Holy Smokes, the food pantry, the baby pantry, Gods kitchen. No one person is at the heart of the work this organization does whether or not you view the organization as good or as bad. Take into consideration the organization as a whole and all that they do for families and communities!
Catholic charities is so full of it they are quick to take your church away for the money there not about bringing families back together
Very friendly and helpful
I am a licensed foster parent through Catholic Charities. As one reviewer also stated - the parking is terrible. It is very difficult to park when attending classes or bringing in children for visitations. The staff is kind and caring but they are stretched way to thin. Caseworkers seem to be underpaid as a few that Im aware of have second jobs. The caseworkers have a heavy load and spend their days driving kids to visitation, dentist appointments and other appointments. It would be helpful if the caseworkers had a personal aide to deal with the transportation so they could focus on other issues at hand. It appears to be a loving organization with reunification as their main goal. It would be helpful if they put some more staff in place to support the caseworkers to avoid burnout. Most of the case workers appear to be fresh out of college and turnover appears to be an issue.
My Intake lady was very nice. Very helpful.
I am writing this review so that others will have a more transparent view of this organization and how it is failing its children, and its foster and adoptive parents. It hurts me to take this step but the level of deception employed by this organization and the level of incompetence shown by its employees is staggering, particularly for an organization with a religious affiliation. One of my best friends has, for the past three months, been working through steps to adopt a child and, as those steps work towards a conclusion, the child, a young girl, has been living with her as a foster child. The only stipulation that she attached to her adoption was that the child not have a history of violence and, in short, the child that she was matched with is extraordinarily violent -- shes broken my friends ribs among other things -- and the agency knew that was her history. My friend has tried to file incident reports following the attacks and was told that she couldnt because if she did, theyd be part of the childs record and it would make her impossible to place elsewhere. She then took steps to get the child into sessions with a special therapist to help her deal with her anger and, at every step for weeks on end, was told that she could not -- it wasnt allowed. Nor, for that matter, was discipline of any kind -- nothing physical, obviously, but not so much as a cross word and if the child reported any conflict, my friend was warned about her conduct. The child has broken holes in walls, destroyed carpeting, thrown food and dishes at restaurants -- no cross words are allowed. No boundaries are acceptable. When shes tried to set boundaries, shes told that the agency will take the child away. The social workers at the field level of this agency are impossibly incompetent. The people you interact with when youre considering a foster child or adoption are completely different than those assigned to your case. Be very careful when youre deciding if this agency is a fit for you -- they have demonstrated a pattern of deceit and incompetence with my friend and its produced a sad state for everyone involved. Im sorry to post this because my own family has adopted four children and had a wonderful experience -- but partnership with the agencies weve worked with has been a key part of our success and Ive never seen any thing like what Im seeing with Catholic Charities West Michigan.
Parking is terrible. Services offered for those in need are great and varied. Everything from classes to better yourself to case management for fostering/ adoption needs.
If you dont answer your phone until 8:30 you should maybe consider changing your open time. Its kind of misleading. Shouldnt have to call 55 times over the span of a half hour when your hours indicate that you are open.
Decent people & they have a wide variety of programs
My sister and my sons mother both use this place and say that they are quite happy with the services that they get
Thier substance abuse counselor cassandra is awesome very blunt & understanding & looks at what you say in depth & is able to give you a out side the box perspective...
Im happy overall, but I wish they still had a Psychiatrist on staff.
