Went horseback riding for my birthday. Hadnt been on a ride since I was a little girl. Im an anxious mess of a human, but the staff helped me feel comfortable and helped settle my nerves before the ride. The guide was great, and told us stories and talked with us. They were all very kind, and funny. The hometowney feeling you experience is why I love Flagstaff so much. Youd have a good time here!!
Overall, my friend and I had a great time on the two hour ride today. Chris was an excellent guide and the horses seemed well taken care of.You pretty much show up, sign liability waivers, and go ride. We actually liked this, but some people may be expecting more rules of the ride sort of talk. It was very relaxed. We only had a total of four people on our ride which was great, as it was quieter and felt more intimate. The trail we took wasnt overly technical and was perfectly manageable for anyone who hasnt ridden a horse before. My only real complaint was booking. Almost made it 4 stars because of this. It took a few calls to get through for booking, and I ended up leaving a message. I did get a call back within a couple hours, gave my credit card number, was just told to be there 30 mins early, and that was that. As some others have mentioned, some sort of confirmation email or anything would have been nice.Lastly, we were told that the company has been downsizing and will likely be under new management soon.
Awesome experience! Mary was friendly and professional. My wife and I are novice horse riders at best, but Mary took us in hand patiently. The pace was nice and easy, and allowed ample time for picture/video of the gorgeous mountains and forestry. .During the course of the tour,my wife became a little anxious, and Mary understandingly offered to lead her horse for her. Further on, my saddle loosened a bit,and once again,Mary quickly and patiently handled the issue. Would use the again in a heartbeat!
Buck was totally amazing with Zayden(our 6 year old grandson). Every precaution was taken for this trail ride to be extremely safe. We traveled to Arizona from Asheville, NC and with all the sites and things to do, this by far was our grandsons favorite. If your ever in the area, this is a must do!!! Thank you Buck for making Zaydens experience so memorable.
My teen daughter and I went riding this past weekend. First time to the Hitchin Post and we did the 1 hour as there was not room on the 2 hr. Next time we will book much earlier! We have been to lots of trail riding places and I have to say, I have never seen such healthy and well cared for horses at other places. These horses are fit and clean. The trail was nice, the guide, Mary was cool. 😎 We both got to ride Belgian Draft horses and it was so fun!
Took my daughter on a 2-hr trail ride since she loves horses and it was everything she hoped. Very friendly staff and our trail guide, Amanda, was super patient with the kids and did an awesome job guiding us. Temps in Phx were 114 but in the low 80s in Flagstaff so we enjoyed the great weather and gorgeous scenery. We look forward to making this a tradition!
Buck was awesome we had a great time riding with him he was informative shared personal stories and shared some of his life with us. My wife never rode a horse and buck was really nice to her. We would most definitely recommend this ride to any who likes to be on the woods thank you so much for a great time see you in June at the rodeo
Amazing horses, breathtaking forest trails, and accommodating staff. It is clear that this small outfit is all about quality over quantity. The Tennessee Walkers they have are so energetic and responsive! Hands down the best place to ride horses in Northern Arizona. Send an email if you cant reach them by phone! Email address is on the website. I had to call a couple times to book our ride since I kept missing the wranglers, and then I was able to confirm with them the day before via email.
Fantastic time out on the trail with Amanda and our horses, Jill and Grace! The one hour ride was a nice break from the hustle and bustle (and heat) of Phoenix area.Highly recommend.
What a great experience! The guides, the horses and especially the scenery were all amazing!
Super amazing experience! Mary was an amazing soul, super helpful informative and friendly. The horses looked healthy well mannered and well taken care of. Mary made sure me and my partner felt super comfortable with getting on the horses, which later made us feel confident to ride. We loved the companions we had Barb and Jenny super friendly horses with a lot of character❤️ Scenery was absolutely beautiful on the trail ❤️. Oh cant forget the friendly greeting from the pups right as we pulled into park from plato and Kelsi who guided us on the trail.Ps if its your first time riding highly suggest a 1hour ride.. your honey might be a little sore after the horse Ride
My wife is a novice horse rider and I am a complete beginner, city boy. Buck was our guide and was friendly and funny from the get go. He helped us mount, give us a crash course in steering. Buck asked if we wanted a narrated tour or just riding in silence. We opted for the narration. He pointed out interesting facts, conversed with us, and just had a great personality. For someone who has never riden, I felt comfortable from the get go. Thanks buck!
Get there while Chris is still a Wrangler! He was such a great tour guide, really made my bachelor party weekend great. Really liked how authentic it was, highly recommend this particular place to take horseback riding hikes
Mary was amazing! It was my daughters birthday and she made it so special! Definitely will be back!
Mary was the best tour guide! The horses were great and the trail was wonderful. Highly recommend!
My daughter almost got killed on one of their broken down old horses! I would never go there again. Too dangerous.
We booked our trip several weeks in advance. I gave them my card number, and the rest of my information. I never received any type of confirmation, no email or text. I could almost never reach them when I call. The day of the trip, I called several times and no answer. We show up an hour ahead of time and no one was there. We kept calling, while several other families came wondering where all the employees were. My entire surprise for my fiance was ruined. Our entire trip was planned for this specific event.I would have loved to have gone, but to not have any employee to speak to or show up to my reservation is absolutely terrible.
Jozi lead us for an hour and took especially special care of my youngest child in the front of the tour, while guiding the rest of us 1st timers😬 Shes a pro🤸🏽♀️!Excellent customer service. Friendly. Proessional. Safety remained priority. We will be back. Thanks so much for an enjoyable experience!🙏🏽🌠🤸🏽♀️
Amazing service, horses and scenery! Had the best time!!!!
My favorite place in the country to ride. Its like being on Bonanza! Unfortunately the conditions were too icey to ride safely so we had to do the sleigh ride. It was still beautiful and the staff is always friendly and fun to talk with. I was really hoping to ride in the snow but it was too dangerous. Cant wait to come back and ride again!
Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Had a blast. If you ride the horse named Barbie, male sure you baby her ❤️
Been on a few trail rides before, but this was by far the best. Trail thru the forest was beautiful and Chris our guide was great. Definitely recommend as a must do while in Flagstaff. We did the 2 hour ride.
Had an amazing ride on Saturday morning. Beautiful weather and amazing trail lead. The horses were so fun to ride. So glad we came up to Flagstaff for the weekend and really enjoyed our time here. Would highly recommend!!
Guide was great with our kids and everyone had an excellent time. Recommended!
Staff is great. Cowboy and his wife. Very friendly. The trails are slow but pretty. Unfortunately, insurance coverage in AZ doesnt let you do much in terms of real riding, and thats everywhere. Follow the leader at slow walking pace while trying to slow down the horse, who wants to go faster. I guess theres nothing they can do about that.
My family and I (including two children) stopped by to inquire about one-hour ride availability and were attacked by the dog in the office. No human was around and the dog chased us out. It was terrifying and definitely not something we should’ve been subject to. If you’re closed, please update your online info and close the office and put a sign! Don’t leave your unleashed dog to attack children!
This is for the sleigh ride and dinner. We wanted to love this...we really did. My kids went many years ago and you rode for about an hour out into the woods..dinner was in big tents with open outdoor fires and live music. Im only giving this 2 stars because, the 2 sweet guys that run this are doing everything the can with the bad situation that was handed to them. They tell good jokes and clearly love their lives. Unfortunately for us, customers, what the owners have done with this is sad. The sleigh ride has been dumbed down to a figure 8 ride along the rode that only takes a very short time. The dinner is served in a freezing very small tent that is basically plastic picnic tables. There is a little wood stove but it was ice cold in there and we just wanted to leave. We paid around $600 for 7 of us to do the ride and dinner. We had to wait about an hour for our food because, these poor guys have to give the ride, clean up their horses cook the food and run back and forth from a house up the hill with the food....also while they were checking in a large Airbnb group. Its just not worth it. Shame on the owner!. Its robbery! I would go back just to take a trail ride with these kinds souls that are running the place, but I would never want to give the owners more of our money.
Extremely rude on the trail to through hikers who are following the law. Horses are easily spooked by well-behaved dogs on leash, yielding to horses 200 ft. away. Please share the outdoors respectfully.
Such a great time! Been two years in a row now. Beautiful horses and scenery. Its a must do if you are in town and want to do a sleigh ride.
Very friendly and easy-going staff. The stables and the route is lined with historic wagons from the civil war.Our guide Cody is a 100% pure blooded horseman. While we were riding through the forrest he told us stories of his adventures. The horses are treated kindly. They seemed to be well groomed and happy.I would definitely go again!
I’ve called multiple times throughout the week and did a online inquiry to schedule a ride for this weekend and one decided to get back to me. Called wild western horseback adventure and they booked me immediately!
My partner and I went on the sleigh ride today. Justin and Jared were our guides and they were super nice and knowledgeable about the areas history. We will definitely choose Historic Hitchin Post Stables again. 😀🐎❄🙌
Loved the horse ride definitely coming back
First time riding...I got Barbara. She was awesome and our tour guide was a hoot❤️❤️
We loved going here. Wish the pumpkin patch had been bigger but we had fun. I hope this place can be again what it used to be even I was a kid.
My husband took me horseback riding for my birthday. It was great fun. The weather was perfect and the scenery was amazing. Our guide was friendly and we had a wonderful time!
Won’t answer their phone, return messages or answer emails....I’ve reached out 6 times to schedule a ride and no one has ever had the courtesy of getting back to me. Moving on!
I was good to be out on a horse in the woods. These folks were friendly and helpful. Very relaxing.
I scheduled a one hour ride for my 8 year old daughter and myself. We were asked to arrive at 2:00 PM for a 2:30 ride. At 12:34, I received a message and voice mail saying their wrangler was sick and they had to cancel the ride. Mind you, we live about an hour and a half away from the business. As I scheduled, they informed me of a policy that if I cancel within 48 hours of the rides, I will be charged for both rides. I understood and accepted.A business can have a safe guard for themselves, but not put in place safeguards to protect the interest of their customers. It was disappointing and annoying.Take your business elsewhere, hopefully a place that protects the interests of the customer as the priority.
A friend & I own quarter horses in Arkansas and went on the 4 hour ride into Walnut Canyon with Wrangler Carissa on their Tennessee Walkers. The ride was smooth and more enjoyable than it would have been on one of my quarter horses. The Aspen, Blue Spruce, various beautiful wild flowers and caves were gorgeous. I would recommend these stables to anyone wanting a unique view of the area in charming company. They have horses for the experienced rider as well as the novice beginner. We had a packed lunch on the trail at a nostalgic camp area with a circle of old wagons reminiscent of the Old days or a western movie. They even have a horse thats been in the movie, The Gambler that Kenny Rodgers rode. He is 32 years old and is currently occasionally ridden by kids. Point being, they take very good care of their horses which was very important to us. I thank you Historic Hitching Post Stables and Carissa for a very memorable lifetime experience. I even enjoyed listening to Elvis on the trail.
Beautiful area.
Were from California Took my niece and nephew and it was an Amazing experience. Megan and AJ are phenomenal!!! The trail was well worth the price! I can see why they were so highly rated. I would definitely recommend them& next time we visit we will definitely return.
We were a group of 6 who took an hour trail ride. Very enjoyable ride and our wranglers were good with the special needs individuals in our group. We will definitely use Hitchin Post again and highly recommend.
Fantastic experience. Thank you so much for a wonderful sleigh ride!
Very accommodating with amazing horses and guides. Reasonably priced and friendly! We did the 1hr ride and hands down would return for a longer ride. The scenery is very basic but still relaxing.
Was a great experience, you gotta do the dinner! the steak was great, everything was freshly made and they topped it off with homemade peach cobbler. the staff was very polite and their little girl was great company and Abby the dog was nice too!
My girlfriend and I were in from Ohio for the week and we came here on our 2nd to last day in town. We were not disappointed in the slightest with our experience. Our guide, AJ, was about as friendly and personable as one could hope for, the terrain was, as expected, gorgeous and the horses were pleasant and well mannered. All in all this was a great time and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to log some time in the saddle.
Ignore any bad reviews, the service here is great. Yes the rides were at a walk but this is absolutely perfect and the terrain makes the walking exciting enough! We just had a fabulous morning ride with AJ and Megan at Hitching Post, with my two daughters ages 5 and 7. We felt in very capable hands the whole time and will be back again!
Best Horse experience of my life...the staff was excellent and made us feel VERY SAFE!
We drove from Chandler, Az to Pumpkin in the Pines and it was extremely disappointing and highly over priced. The petting zoo was filthy cages that held a pig, a goat, a turkey, and one rabbit in a hutch.. you arent allowed to enter the cages, you can only pet the animals if they come up to the fence. The food for sale was snack bags of chips and a cooler of soda. The grounds were extremely dirty, unorganized, and I cant believe I paid $24 for my husband and I to spend 30 minutes there. The only thing true about their advertising was that pumpkins are not included in the price of admission.. those are extra and not worth it.Id love a refund.
Had a great trail ride. Everybody was very nice & helpful. Horses are very well trained & taken care of. Good ride for kids, had an 8 & 11yo. Would recommend.
Cannot say enough good things about this place. We had 2 experienced riders who wanted to go out with various family members with no experience. The first was a group of 4 early morning. The second was a group of 5. Trying to plan this with family was tough but Megan was SUPER helpful and went above and beyond to be helpful to us. The wranglers were very nice and Megans husband who rode with us was super friendly and nice to spend a couple of hours with. I am a licensed Veterinary Technician and was with my sister in law who is a veterinarian and we were very happy to see the horses happy and healthy and well fed and cared for. Highley recommend a ride here if you have the time!
The staff are very friendly. The scenery was amazing, and the ride was relaxing. To be fair, the horses walk through the entire journey (i.e. no trotting or galloping), and that is explained at the beginning before you pay. Our guide offered to take our pictures (using my cell phone) during the ride, and they turned out great!
Very friendly staff and a great variety of animals. The horses were incredibly sweet. Cant wait to return for a winter sled ride!
Second time weve ridden with Hitchin Post and they are always wonderful! Great guides! Beautiful ride and comfortable terrain. Horses are well taken care of and loved! I highly recommend taking a ride with them!
Amazing people, very friendly. The trail was lots of fun. Would 100% recommend to anyone who wanted to ride in flagstaff.
An amazing experience!! Was my son and husbands first time riding and they had a blast!!!
This was a great first experience riding a horse. Buster was a great horse and Dale, the wrangler, was awesome. Made the experience unforgettable. We will definitely be back and recommend this place to everyone. Thanks Dale and Dad Clint Eastwood for the lesson and ride.
Great ride. Great people.
Great place, lovely animals and friendly people in charge. I had a great time. Highly recommend!!
Many of the comments complain about over price admission, simple snacks, and the petting zooPersonally I had a wonderful time. I took my grandkids during a weekday. We were the only ones there. We walked along the horse corrals, the horses were people friendly thriving on affection. The grandkids played for an hour or so on a mini jumper and played a few games. This is a great place to unwind, appreciate the outdoors and farm life. The kids love it and the scenery is beautiful. I would definitely reccomend the Historic Hitchin Post for some good old fashion family quality time. Also a great place to take your fall photos.
Very nice
Amazing wranglers. Took the time to go over instructions carefully and clearly. Great ride and perfect for young, inexperienced riders or older, experienced riders. Highly recommended :)
Pumpkin Patch review Only: drove up from Phoenix for the pumpkin patch as they advertised “Hay Ride, games, bounce house, petting zoo, food, ect” was definitely not as expected. The entire area was about the size of an extra large back yard. They could put in the advertisement that it’s honestly meant for kids about 3/2 and younger as everything was super small tike size. My kids are 10 and 8 and could not do anything. The “petting zoo” was a pig a goat and a turkey that you could only pet if they walked up to the gate you could stand at and see them. The food was bagged chips and Cheetos and the hay ride was a circle made in the middle of a field with nothing really to see. Very overpriced for the activities as pumpkins were not included in the admission. Could go a long way just letting people in for free and having them pay al a carte as the hay ride was also additional to admission. Sorry, would not recommended.
We absolutely love the people and animals here. We come up to ride here as often as possible. If I was rich I would buy it! This is one of my happy places.
My husband and I went ridding here and had an amazing time. Our guide was awesome. Perfect weather too! Cant wait to return.
Take a ride or a quick tasty stop on way to or from home and so many beautiful places.
Great stables. Wonderful early morning ride in the Coconino National Forest, very relaxing. Gentle Horses, great instructions before ride. Highly recommend.
Took my granddaughter here and it was a wonderful 2 hour ride. Owners were so nice. Great horses.
A great place for the whole family
Had a great ride with AJ...very knowledgeable...super pleasant...2 hr rideBeautiful Forest and canyon ride...highly recommend..🤗
I shouldnt even give a one star since we drove 4 hours and 45 minutes to only get to see a few buildings and a few horses. Didnt get to ride. No one answered their phone. I called 2 weeks before and spoke with a guy that said to call back a day or two before we were going to set an appointment but they never answered their phones. So disappointed. This was my sons 12th birthday.
Nice place to get away for some peace and quiet. Staying in the cabin met all our expectations and then some. 10/10
Get your riding in! Looking for a horseback ride in the ol Walnut Canyon? ...heres your spot! Check It & Enjoy!!
I am a beginner rider who went on a 2 hr ride this weekend. All of the staff was amazing and helpful! Beautiful ride through the forest! I am looking forward to traveling back to Flaggstaff to ride again!!! Thank you again for a wonderful experience!!!
Super friendly family managing the place. I will definitely be back here for more horseback riding.
I cant speak for the stables for the rest of the year, but the pumpkin patch was very disappointing. It wasnt even a real patch, it was just a field of weeds with pumpkins placed in it. Admission was overpriced and didnt even include the price of our pumpkins! The hay ride was pretty inauthentic and very short and there werent really any good places to take photos. Overall, I mostly felt swindled out of my money by the time we left. There are MUCH better places to go if youre looking for a good pumpkin patch in the fall.
Great place, horse back ride was awesome and our guide was great!🐴
And in addition to great rides in beautiful cpuntry (especially the two hour), they now have horse-draem sleigh rides. Great fun
Lived at hitching post and worked for Roger. Good man and professional business person. Healthy horses and clean place. Would definitely work for him again.
Great place to board and ride.
Great time. Good people. Nice horses and scenery. Prices are good. Would definitely go again.
Oh we had such a beautiful ride took the 2 hour very scenic and our guide BJ and his new trainee PJ were just so wonderful, BJ is a true Cowboy, humble knowledgeable and really loves the horses he looks out for them and the riders.
Offers sleigh rides during the winter. Fun for the kids but a little on the expensive side. Awesome friendly staff. Wish the ride was a little longer and that they still served dinner out in the forest in a wall tent instead of the cabin.
Great experience for horse sleigh! Nice staff very friendly!
Just went for a one hour ride today that was great! The trails were very rugged and beautiful, and the horses were terrific.
My family of 3 took the 2 hour trail ride through the forest. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I had several concerns leading up to the ride and emailed Megan at the stables. I was vefy surprised at how professilnal she was. She replied to all of my texy messages and followed up with emails. AJ, the wrangler who lead us was extremely conscientious with safety. You are in good hands with this outfit.
