I have been coming to this gym for over a year now. The staff is SUPER friendly. From the ladies at the front to the amazing manager Carol. I definitely recommend. I have finally got my husband to join as well since the atmosphere is so nice.The equipment is very new too and the gym goers are friendly.

I found Retro this summer and never intended to join a gym, but tried it out while my boys attended performance training with Parisi. The welcoming environment and variety of the group classes made me enthusiastic to continue to return. My favorite is Body Combat on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s with Jessica! And finally jumped on a great membership deal in January and joined with my husband. Now I’m introducing him to classes and he is working the machines with me. And I can take a guest every visit! Everything is clean and comfortable with all the amenities you would expect. And top it off with hydro massage! - Margot O’Neill

Retro is an okay gym. Pros: Staff is great, never super busy, decent amount of free weights, dues comparable to PF. Cons: machines are dated and need maintenance, bathroom is never very clean, half of the equipment was replaced with turf that the majority of members do not use, the turf is blocked off for Parisi trainers half of the time. If I still worked in the area I would go here for convenience but I would not recommend the gym to friends.

Ive been a member of this gym for over a year now. The staff and facilities are top of the line. The members are friendly and approachable. The entire culture here is one of support and friendship. I fully recommend this gym to everyone.

Good for the price. Ive been a member for little under a year now and am fairly satisfied. Theres plenty of equipment, whether for weightlifting or cardio. Not as crowded compared to other gyms in the area. Machines are in good condition and usually get fixed pretty quickly. They offer a variety of classes, with Cycle Jam (spin class) being my personal favorite. You cant get that kind of intense workout with good music and a motivating instructor elsewhere. Anyone who says otherwise is probably a snobby Les Mills instructor speaking out of jealousy. Smoothie bar protein drinks are tasty and filling. I recommend the Mocha with Peanut Butter. Staff is friendly and approachable. Overall, a good bang for your buck!

I’ve been a member for over 3 years now. Definitely the best gym in Durham hands down! I for sure get the best workouts every time i come. It’s never really to crowded and also a great crowd of people with great energy! I recommend anyone who’s looking for a loving home for a gym to join here.

Retro Fitness staff were warm and welcoming when we entered, accommodating when asked and knowledgeable about fitness/training. The facility was clean, well kept and organized. There were also features that I’d never expect that were awesome (water massage chairs and movie room!!). Can’t wait to start.

I have been a member here thanks to the client you guys canceled the membership for no reason and was called the police as if he had done something bad making his reputation look bad. I’m very unhappy with how management is handling this situation of a 2 year old in child care they are not being profesional at all. I have known this couple for a while now and they are really good people and kids are kids if you are a parent you know toddlers just want to be playing around and they do not want to be sitting and that’s what the sitters suppose to be watching, as a client I’m asking for the owner to have a talk with the member because this was not the correct way to handle this situation management Karol has not been complying with the policy just decided to take a shortcut and cancel this persons membership with out looking for alternatives.Manager at this location needs more training apparently she can’t handle this...

Visiting a friend in Durham and found this place on line. Stopped in and bought a day pass and was blown away. The place looks slightly cheesy because it’s all red and yellow but it’s the best equipped gym I’ve ever been too. Had everything I was looking for. Generally clean. Newer machines. Tons of things to do. GREAT value and the two girls at front desk were very nice. I’d love for one of these to come to my hometown. I HIGHLY recommend this gymFIVE STARS ALL THE WAY

Best gym in Durham hands down! Active member for a little over a year. Gym is very well maintained and always clean. Since new management the upgrades in the gym has been right on point as far as meeting the needs of the customers. staff is great and they greet you on a first name basis coming in and always acknowledging patrons when they leave. A gym that allows you to be yourself and more than welcome your intense workouts unlike Planet Fitness. Looing forward to seeing what other great upgrades will come.

Pretty good gym! Some equipment needs better cleaning, but overall very enjoyable! Guys are bad with staring at girls tho but I find that in every gym I go to.

I come to this gym 4 or 5 times throughout the week, the staff there are outstanding especially the young lady who checks us in, in the mornings. The equipment is excellent and there is always a machine you can have access too, I love this GYM!!!

I have been a member for about 3 to 4 months and I enjoy just watching the improvements that have happened since I joined. I love the warm water message chairs. I have referred my friends and the are members too. So we can workout with the Les Mills group fitness training. Oh and they have a Live DJ on Friday nights around 6pm.One year update and this is still my favorite place to workout!

I never post reviews but I always leave Retro Fitness happy and glad I joined. The staff are awesome and friendly, but in the cool, not overbearing way. Special shout out to Cameron! I love taking advantage of my monthly package, including the hydro massage chairs and spinning classes. This gym offers all the machines I could want, is clean, and offers plenty of space for stretching and free weights, which is so important (and often lacking in other gyms). Love it, and super affordable!

Facility meets my needs. Staff is friendly and professional. Day to day maintenance is kept up with which is really appreciated. Sanitation products are always available. I feel I get good value for my monthly dues. Owner stays involved from my observation.Lots of parking. Some pothole issues and small roof leaks during heavy rain but that is more on the property owner than the gym.

This is one of the best gyms I have been to in a long time. This gym has everything you need if you to bulk up or tone up or just stay in shape. If I have an issue I can usually look towards management for help.Well I didn’t feel that way at this gym. Karol the manager signed me up for a membership and didnt share crucial information about the policy.I’ve had such a difficult time bringing my plus one and even bribed to leave money in the tip jar to let him in the gym.When I talked to Carol about it, she acted like it was all my fault for not knowing the policy. May I remind you the information she lacked to share with me. More then once my plus one had to leave and wasn’t allowed access to the gym.Finally I just decided to cancel my membership. I just feel like she isn’t an honest person and I could be wrong, but that how she made me feel.Anyways, I’m not saying don’t join this gym, I’m just leaving a review of my experience.

I love it here! I joined back in December and haven’t looked back. I mainly lift and they have all the free weights that I need! Great gym and for only $20/month, you can’t beat it!

This place is a hidden gem of gyms in Durham. I cant believe I havent found this place until now. The customer service is unreal, they actually listen and seem to care, which really compliments the upbeat & positive vibe of this gym. I have been to EVERY gym in the area as well as the surrounding area and this place is just as big, clean and has more than enough free weights and cardio equipment as compared to everywhere else. Also, all of the equipment is in like new condition. AND 4 squat racks.. seriously?! The smoothie bar was really cool, they even brought it to me while I was on one of their Hydro Beds. Lastly, I have never taken a group class before but the front desk staff convinced me to try a Less Mills - Body Pump class. I was very comfortable, had plenty of space in the Group fitness room and the instructor was AWESOME! I felt like a part of a team. Highly recommend at least coming and taking a tour of this place.

I went in as a guest and I did not like the service.They have literally the worst customer service obviously need more training including management .They have two stair masters and only one was working.I left my kid in the children’s room the adult that suppose to be supervising the little ones was on her phone she sees them when you open the door and that’s all and continues to be on her phone.

Ive been a member here for near a year and in Durham for 2 years. It is hands-down the best gym in the area. Youll always have access to equipment with little to no wait and the staff is super friendly and helpful!Added bonus - they have a GREAT smoothie bar for that after workout deliciousness!

Overall probably the best gym I’ve been a member ofin 16+ years of lifting and counting. Ample space. Always appears clean. Can’t beat $20.00 a month! My only wish is that the machines were Hammer Strength. The red and yellow color scheme leaves a lot to be desired as well.

I have never worked out in my life but wanted to get into shape and establish some healthier patterns with my 40th birthday looming. I visited a couple gyms in Durham (Planet Fitness and Millennium) before checking out Retro. I LOVED how open and and airy Retro was. The tall ceiling and the cardio movie theater are really cool! The staff was very friendly and they had a ton of free weights and machines, and cadio equipment. It is clean and not hot and stuffy - a huge fan keeps the air moving! The equipment is well taken care of and the location is convenient. I have been working out regularly (3 times a week) for the past few months and have loved it more with each passing week! It has a really accessible vibe with people from all walks of life and varying gym experience. I have not felt intimidated or out of place even though I am a tall, skinny, weak dude! :) I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS GYM!

I was a member of the Durham NC branch. The staff doesnt know about the gym policy so make sure to read the contract very carefully when you sign specially in relation to cancellations policy, when i signed in i mentioned that i will be moving out of Durham in a month time and the staff told me that all i need to do to cancel my subscription was to pay a yearly fee and provide a proof of move which i did but was not allowed to cancel without paying a three month penalty which they said is mentioned in the contract i signed and which i was not told at all when i asked originally about their cancellation policy.

Recently joined. I am still learning the facility but my experience with this place has been great so far. Always greeted with great energy and a smile.

Need to find a workout while on vacation. This is an excellent facility with all the equipment that I need. I waz rather impressed with the variety of machines and free weight equipment they had. Trap bars, kettle bells, free weighs and dumbells to 120lbs. The equipment was in good shape, facility very clean and the customer service saw great. In addition, the day passes were 10 dollars with is unheard off to use such a quality facility. If you ever are in Raleigh and need to workout, you need to go here.

Good luck trying to cancel to they bill you month to even after you try to cancel over the phone or in person basically you cant cancel until youve paid your balance. Its messed up but read the contract details before signing up with them.

While I didn’t use the entire faculty, I was actually intrigued with the customer service and the endless machines and rooms that members have access to. It really does feel as if the gym is keeping up with the times and is not outdated.

Best gym Ive ever worked out at. Management and employees are very friendly and helpful. They have a lot of equipment and weights available so you dont have to wait around to lift. The movie room with cardio equipment in it is great I love watching movies while I run. And last but not least the wonderful protein smoothies they make are the bomb! A must have after a workout!

I really like this gym and have used it during visits with my sister. It would be a 5 star rating; however, I was told i could not buy a second 5 day pass after my first one expired (i bought this several months ago). This policy is ridiculous; I am not going to purchase a membership to a gym I will be going to for only a week at a time. This makes me not want to come back even though I have had friendly experiences in the past.

Lots of great equipment and machines. Locker room is quite clean. I would like if they provided towels. Maybe a guide to fully/thoroughly explain what is and isnt allowed, i.e. moving weights and equipment and to where.

I signed up at the beginning of the yr when they were offering their $1 special. I was assured that theyd make the child care area as nice as the rest of the gym so I joined and waited......... a few months later it seemed the childcare area got worse so I called to cancel didnt think anything of it until I looked at my statements. I then again called come in they say weve fixed it, since Im still under contract I still get billed either way even though Ive not been in there since Feb/Mar.Its now July and still getting billed. Ugh this place sucks.

The Les mills instructors and the new owners are wonderful. The gym is extremely clean and the staff is always courteous. The group fitness environment is welcoming and positive.

Best gym in the area hands down. It’s clean, great setup of equipment, cardio that’s upstairs that overlooks the gym, and overall an easy place to get a good lift. Another bonus is the size of the place; it’s spaced out with a long turf as well for any HIIT training plus extra rooms for classes, spinning, and more. I came here everyday for my vacation and loved how accessible it was to get my workout in and the friendly staff. Karol was welcoming when I was checking in and her staff as well asked myself and my fiancé about New Jersey (which is where we’re from) and about thanksgiving. It was nice for them to greet us and make us feel welcome here. Great gym, service, and equipment, a must stop for any athlete. I will definitely be coming back next time i’m In North Carolina!

PLEASE DO NOT JOIN. If it was possibly to give negative stars I would. I went to this gym 3 times and on the fourth day I went to cancel but they told me that after three days you couldnt. I had to pay out the contract for an entire year and afterwards they were still billing me! I had to call multiple times and write multiple emails threatening to pursue legal action in order to finally terminate my membership. There is still a 30 day cancellation period afterward were they hold you responsible for bills and payments. I have been a member at multiple gyms and never have I come across such a crooked, scheming, and unprofessional company. I dont ever write reviews, but I needed to write this one in hopes of saving some innocent sole of going through the same painstaking and gruesome process that I had to endure.

Unmaintained and poor communication. Ive been a member for a little while now, but it didnt take long to identify all of the problem areas. People dont rerack their weights, the womens facilities arent maintained, and they dont have a manager on site to address issues (and staff arent trained to do basic functions like returning a locker space). Im very disappointed in this gym; luckily a different gym is opening across the street.

When Karol /Carol (not sure how her name is spelled) signed me up for my membership she told me there wasn’t any cancellation fee. I vividly asked that question coz I didn’t want to have to deal with the hassle of cancellation from my other gym since I travel a lot for work and knew I wasn’t staying there very long... only for me to be told when I wanted to cancel that I’ll be charged $150. Spoke with Ben, and all he could tell me was “Sorry you were misinformed but that’s company policy”. Of course he’d say that coz Carol is his boss. FYI Ben, there’s no difference between a lying charlatan and someone who engages in willful misinformation just to make a sale. Can’t believe she is allowed to run a business.

Here’s my full story of Retro Fitness:Although it’s a lovely facility with top notch equipment in a great smoothie bar, the customer service and billing side is something you will really need to look out for before signing the contract. Upon signing, they will not tell you that you will later be assessed an annual membership fee, depending on when you sign up. It was about believe about $40 or so. Also, if you want to cancel your contract early, you will be assessed 25 percent of the remaining balance of your contract. On top of any late fees are things that come up. If your card doesn’t charge for the amount, You will be assessed a $19.50 late fee. The whole customer service and billing side has displeasure me, which is why I give the stars for this review. Ultimately, even after reading the contract, you still aren’t told about the charges that are coming. Know what you’re getting into before you sign.

I love Retro Fitness Durham, I was trained by Emmanuel and he made me feel comfortable using weights and would correct my form when I needed help. The gym is really clean and has alot to offer including great classes. I really like the smoothie bar and when I come in I grab a chocolate pb and banana protein shake.

When I opened my account with retro I told Karol the manager clearly that it was going to be under my name but the billing information was going to be with my husband card what she did was created the account under my husband name so when I went to workout they told me that I couldn’t go in without my husband so I had to change the name of the account to my name she charged me $25 for her mistake and she was yelling at me saying that it was my fault that I was the one that didn’t listen basically talking to me like I was her kid in front of every customer that was walking in. Very rude unprofessional customer service and that’s why I barely go to the gym to not have to deal with her angry dog face since unfortunately I’m stuck with this contract !! Not all employees are rude I would suggest you stay away from Laravia the girl with the braids and Karol the manager they have the worst attitudes I see why they get along so well. Laravia wanna be boss rude as idk what talks to employees really bad in front of customers which makes this place look really bad and ghetto...but yes guys think twice before joining this gym!

Absolutely love this gym!!! The equipment is readily available, their classes will get blood pumping and helps in burning fat, the tanning bed is an extra, and the smoothee bar is a feature most gyms do not have which is inclusive of customizing smoothees to an individuals liking regarding proteins, fat burners and flavors. Worth the cost as one gets what they pay for. 😉

This place is amazing. I got so strong and musculacious at retro. When ISIS stole my blind puppy, retro fitness got my pupper back safe and sound and with 10 extra pounds of muscle mass. Still blind, but very fit now.

Love this place! I have belonged to at least 5 different gyms in the Durham area over the last 20 some years. Retro Fitness is my all around fav. Clean, well equipped, well maintained, friendly staff, cardio theater (theater, with movies on a movie screen, not just a bunch of TVs!) and all this at a reasonable price.

The place is nice, I liked it. Although I am very displeased with the paperwork. I’ve been a member for 3 months, and recently had a knee injury which would put me away from the gym for some time, for which I decided to cancel my membership, because I probably wouldn’t be using it for some time. When I came in to cancel my membership, I was told at that, at that very moment, that I would have to pay a percentage of my remaining months, 25% of 8 months plus the $19.99 of the next billing month in order to cancel. This is no hassle free or anything like that, they do not tell you that when you sign up, they do not explain anything about it, until you are actually there and they’re trying to get your money. At the end, it was my mistake for not reading the small letters. I will be moving my money to a different gym once I’m ready to hit the gym again, and will never return to a retro fitness ever again.

Bad first: these people are crooks!!!!!! They keep auto billing my account and when I call to ask why, the staff is always just as confused as I am! They never give you a copy of your contact so that way they can sneak charges in your card without warnings.. Good: the mixxedfit class is awesome but they only have it late in the afternoon

Same thing happened to me as another reviewer. I asked to cancel my account back in June since I was moving out of the country. Once by going in person and leaving a note with the front desk and twice calling. I also called them twice and emailed them two days ago and no reply from the management. The front desk people are doing their best to help me, but they dont have the authority to cancel my account. Its been six months and theyre still charging me. I wouldnt join this gym unless you plan to continue to be with them until the end of time.

Goodness gracious dont ever try to cancel your membership. Ive been trying to cancel it for over a month now!! Ive contacted the gym, the number associated with the withdrawal on my statement, left a voicemail at the corporate office, and sent several requests on their website, all to no avail. Now that ive had so much trouble I Googled it and im not the only one! Beware unless you want to be auto billed forever!!!
